Assam (English pronunciation: /əˈsæm/ listen ; Assamese: অসম , Ôxôm [ɔ'xɔm] listen ) is a state in Northeast India. Located south of the eastern Himalayas, Assam comprises the Brahmaputra Valley and the Barak Valley along with the Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao districts with an area of 30,285 square miles (78,440 km2). Assam, along with Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, and Meghalaya, is one of the Seven Sister States. Geographically Assam and these states are connected to the rest of India via a 22 kilometres (14 mi) strip of land in West Bengal called the Siliguri Corridor or "Chicken's Neck". Assam shares an international border with Bhutan and Bangladesh; and its culture, people and climate are similar to those of South-East Asia – comprising the elements in India’s Look East policy. Assam became a part of British India after the British East India Company occupied the region following the First Anglo-Burmese War of 1824–1826.
Assam is known for Assam tea and Assam silk. The first oil well in Asia was drilled here. The state has conserved the one-horned Indian rhinoceros from near extinction, along with the pygmy hog, tiger and various species of Asiatic birds. It provides one of the last wild habitats for the Asian elephant. The Assamese economy is aided by wildlife tourism, centred around Kaziranga National Park and Manas National Park which are World Heritage Sites. Sal tree forests are found in the state, which as a result of rainfall looks green all year round. Assam receive more rainfall compared to most part of India. This rain feeds the Brahmaputra River, whose tributaries and oxbow lakes provide the region with a hydro-geomorphic and aesthetic environment.
Upper Assam is an administrative division of the state of Assam comprising the undivided Lakhimpur and Sibsagar districts, of the upper reaches of the Brahmaputra valley. The other divisions are: Lower Assam, North Assam and Hills and Barak Valley. The division is under the jurisdiction of a Commissioner, stationed at Jorhat.
The districts which come under Upper Assam are Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Lakhimpur, Golaghat, Jorhat, Sibsagar and Tinsukia. An extended list of the region also includes the districts of Sonitpur, Karbi Anglong & Nagaon. The Upper Assam region is the most productive region in the state, which is rich in natural resources like coal, oil and natural gas as well as tea plantations.
Dhubri, Kokrajhar, Bongaigaon, Goalpara, Darrang, Morigaon, Baksa, Udalguri, Chirang, Kamrup, Barpeta & Nalbari come under Lower Assam.
The Ahom Kingdom was a kingdom in the Brahmaputra valley in Assam, India that maintained its sovereignty for nearly 600 years and successfully resisted Mughal expansion in North-East India. Established by Sukaphaa, a Tai prince from Mong Mao, it began as a Mong in the upper reaches of the Brahmaputra river. It expanded suddenly under Suhungmung in the 16th century and became multi-ethnic in character. The kingdom became weaker with the rise of the Moamoria rebellion, and subsequently fell to a succession of Burmese invasions. With the defeat of the Burmese after the First Anglo-Burmese War and the Treaty of Yandabo in 1826, control of the kingdom passed into British (East India Company) hands.

Majuli is the world's largest river island situated in Upper Assam. I and Abhishek Saha went there with the aim of filming a documentary in 2013. This place is the centre of Vaishnavism and is naturally rich in cultural heritage. We though that this would be a perfect place to film a documentary. When we got there, we rented a 100cc motorcycle from a local guy and started exploring this place. I was personally moved by the friendly nature of the people of Majuli. Despite being rich on so many levels, there is a constant fear of soil erosion, this island faces every year. At this pace, Majuli might die in a few years. We knew about this issue before going in there but seeing it with our own eyes and talking to people who have faced hardships, made us realise how fragile things are. This...

It's truly a gorgeous area of the country and there is some amazing scenery. Sikkim has a majority Nepali population, so when you're there you'll feel more like you are in Nepal than in India. The easiest way to get to Gangtok is by taking the Indian train to NJP (which stands for New Jalpaiguri) and then catching a jeep from NJP or Siliguri straight to Gangtok. The journey normally takes about 4 hours and you'll drive along a winding mountain road. The views are spectacular when you're on your way to Gangtok, rising into the Himalaya mountains. Though I thought just being ...
