The Teesta River (Pron:ti:ˈstə) or Tista (Nepali: टिष्टा, Hindi टीस्ता, Bengali তিস্তা) is said to be the lifeline of the Indian state of Sikkim, flowing for almost the entire length of the state and carving out verdant Himalayan temperate and tropical river valleys. The river then forms the border between Sikkim and West Bengal before joining the Jamuna (Brahmaputra) as a tributary in Bangladesh. The total length of the river is 309 kilometres (192 mi). It drains an area of 12,540 square kilometres (4,840 sq mi).
The Teesta River originates from the Pahunri (or Teesta Kangse) glacier above 7,068 metres (23,189 ft), and flows southward through gorges and rapids in the Sikkim Himalaya. It is fed by rivulets arising in the Thangu, Yumthang and Donkha mountain ranges. The river then flows past the town of Rangpo where the Rangpo River joins, and where it forms the border between Sikkim and West Bengal up to Teesta Bazaar. Just before the Teesta Bridge, where the roads from Kalimpong and Darjeeling join, the river is met by its main tributary, the Rangeet River. At this point, it changes course southwards flowing into West Bengal. The river hits the plains at Sevoke, 22 kilometres (14 mi) north of Siliguri, where it is spanned by the Coronation Bridge linking the northeast states to the rest of India. The river then courses its way to Jalpaiguri and then touches a very small part of Cooch Behar and then enters into the Rangpur District of Bangladesh, before finally merging with the Brahmaputra River at Fulchori.
This video shows how the course of an international River 'Teesta' is guided by building dams and barrages on it. Five dams and two barrages have been built on this River on its 414 km journey to the Brahmaputra-Jamuna from its source in Sikkim to Bangladesh. The dams and barrages already constructed in the river Teesta have caused a negative impact on free flow of its water. Due to the obstruction on its water flow, the Teesta is heavily silted up and changed its courses at many places, especially in the lower catchment, and erodes its both banks engulfing thousands of hectares of land every year.

River Teesta originates from the base of Mt. Kanchenjunga, flowing through deep gorges and narrow valleys amidst abundant flora and fauna along its path. The lush greenery with varied wild flowers and orchids with the fresh water gushing below is a much sought after haven for nature lovers and anglers. Varied Carps are a common species here but the golden Masheer is a rare one and is the dream catch for all anglers. It is not for the flesh or the taste but the tug-o-war that involves in the process to catch it brings the charm or satisfaction to every angler. This satisfaction leads to happiness and ultimately joy whereby an angler soon forgets about his hardship trolling around the river banks in the scorching sun. In the end, Masheers are just catch and release. These days with much of th...
The Teesta River flows through the length of Sikkim, India and is considered to be the lifeline of the state. The proposed 520 MW Teesta IV Dam is planned for the last free-flowing stretch of the Teesta River between the Teesta III Dam -- currently under construction -- and the Teesta V Dam, already completed. The proposed Teesta IV Dam and its construction, especially the intake tunnel, would destroy a sacred lake that is believed to be the heart of where a Lepcha clan (the original inhabitants of Sikkim) originated. The indigenous people of Sikkim continue to oppose the Teesta IV Dam, along with other hydropower development in the region, but they need our help. Please help spread the word about the threat to the Teesta River. For more information visit: http://www.internationalrivers.o...
The Tista is now a virtually drab dry river with little flow after a series of politically motivated dams built by avaracious business houses have sprouted along its lower Himalayan course. The river now has algal blooms and the flow has been heavily disrupted. Kalimpong (Bengali: কালিম্পং, Nepali: कालेबुङ) is a hill station in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is located at an average elevation of 1,250 metres (4,101 ft).[2] The town is set to be the headquarters of the announced[3] district of Kalimpong. The Indian Army's 27 Mountain Division is located on the outskirts of the town.[4] The Kalimpong is known for its educational institutions, many of which were established during the British colonial period.[5] It used to be a gateway in the trade between Tibet and India before China's annexation of Tibet and the Sino-Indian War. Kalimpong and neighbouring Darjeeling were major centres calling for a separate Gorkhaland state in the 1980s, and more recently in 2010. The municipality sits on a ridge overlooking the Teesta River and is a touris...
