Lachit Borphukan (Assamese: লাচিত বৰফুকন ) was a commander and Borphukan in the Ahom kingdom known for his leadership in the 1671 Battle of Saraighat that thwarted a drawn-out attempt by Mughal forces under the command of Ramsingh I to take back Kamrup. He died about a year later due to illness.
Lachit Borphukan, was the son of Momai Tamuli Borbarua, the first Borbarua (Governor of upper Assam and Commander-in-Chief of the Ahom army) under Prataap Singha. Lachit Borphukan was educated in humanities, scriptures and military skills. He was given positions of responsibility of the Soladhara Barua (scarf-bearer) of the Ahom Swargadeo, a position equivalent to a Private Secretaryship, which was regarded as the first step in career of an ambitious diplomat and politician. Other offices held by Lachit before his appointment as Borphukan included Superintendent of the Stable of Royal Horses (Ghora Barua), Commander of the strategic Simulgarh Fort and Superintendent of the Royal Household Guards or (Dolakaxaria Barua) to the Ahom king Chakradhwaj Singha.

Produced for www.factmuseum.com. The year was 1665 AD and Aurangzeb's Mughal army lead by rajput commander Ram Singh had invaded Assam. The then 400 year old Ahom dynasty that resisted all Islamic invasions so far is about to collapse. The losses started 8 years ago with Mir Jumla's naval invasion. After a long series of indecisive skirmishes Ram Singh decided to put a final nail in the Ahom coffin by launching a major naval attack on the Brahmaputra. Thus ensues the battle of Saraighat fought in 1671 AD where the Mughals expected an easy victory. But there was one person who would save the day for Assam - Lachit Borpukan - the Ahom general. This video is a tribute to that forgotten part of Indian history and to the brave son of Assam. Jai Aai Axom - Jay Hind

If you don’t happen to be an Assamese, you are probably entirely ignorant about the fact that the Mughal Empire at its height was defeated by the Assamese in a place very close to Guwahati called Saraighat by an Ahom general called Lachit Borpukhan. He is one of the greatest generals of Indian history. He managed somehow to coax the Mughals who were basically cavalry and artillery guys in to fight the battle on Brahmaputra, where the Assamese had huge advantage because they were locals. And he essentially sank the entire Mughal fleet in the Brahmaputra. It was a completely devastating defeat! It was the first really big defeat that the Mughals have faced in India since Humayun came back to rule Delhi and it was absolutely devastating. After that essentially the Mughal Empire began to fall...
