Jayanta Hazarika (Assamese: জয়ন্ত হাজৰিকা) (20 September 1943 – 15 October 1977) was an Assamese Indian singer and composer. He wrote lyrics for a few songs and composed music for several movies. In his short 34 years life span he created many legendary songs that are still widely popular today in Assam.
Popularly known as Rana-da, Jayanta Hazarika was the youngest brother of Bhupen Hazarika. He started his musical career accompanying his brother and later made his name as singer and composer on his own right. Jayanta was the first Assamese composer to fuse western musical forms such as rock and roll, jazz and Western Classical with traditional Assamese melodies and created a new sound. He was a pioneer in introducing several western instruments in his compositions.
Jayanta Hazarika was born in a famous musical family of Assam. He was the youngest among the 10 children of father Nilakanta Hazarika and mother Shantipriya Hazarika. Bhupen Hazarika was his eldest brother. On 20-th September 1943 Jayanta was born at Mangaldai. Jayanta grew up in an environment full of music since his early childhood. All his brothers and sisters were deeply involved with music. At the age of nine Jayanta composed the melody for a song written by his elder brother Nripen Hazarika. Jayanta Hazarika studied high-school in Sonaram High School of Guwahati. He failed in his matriculation examination in 1962 and went to Calcutta where he recorded two songs with HMV.
Hazarika is a surname from Assam, India.
Originally the title was conferred by the Ahom kingdom of medieval Assam. The Assamese community has a naming system which is loosely based on their ancestors' profession during Ahom kings' reign. During Ahom reign, Hazarika was commander over 1000 soldiers (Hazar=1000). The surname is common to Hindu and Muslim in Assam. The surname belongs to Bagh Hazarika whose wealthy descendants historically had extensive land holdings in Assam. The surname mostly belongs to the Kalita, Ahom, Sutiya, Sonowal Kacharis and Koch communities.
A music director may be the director of an orchestra or concert band, the director of music for a film, the director of music at a radio station, the head of the music department in a school, the coordinator of the musical ensembles in a university, college, or institution (but not usually the head of the academic music department), the head bandmaster of a military band, the head organist and choirmaster of a church, or an Organist and Master of the Choristers (a title given to a Director of Music at a cathedral, particularly in England).
The title of "music director" or "musical director" is used by many symphony orchestras to designate the primary conductor and artistic leader of the orchestra. The term "music director" is most common for orchestras in the United States. With European orchestras, the titles of "principal conductor" or "chief conductor" are more common, which designate the conductor who directs the majority of a given orchestra's concerts in a season. In musical theatre and opera, the music director is in charge of the overall musical performance, including ensuring that the cast knows the music thoroughly, supervising the musical interpretation of the performers and pit orchestra, and conducting the orchestra.
Bhupen Hazarika (Assamese: ভূপেন হাজৰিকা) (1926–2011) was an Indian lyricist, musician, singer, poet and film-maker from Assam. His songs, written and sung mainly in the Assamese language by himself, are marked by humanity and universal brotherhood and have been translated and sung in many languages, most notably in Bengali and Hindi. His songs, based on the themes of communal amity, universal justice and empathy, have become popular among the people of Assam, besides West Bengal and Bangladesh. He is also acknowledged to have introduced the culture and folk music of Assam and Northeast India to Hindi cinema at the national level. He received the National Film Award for Best Music Direction in 1975. Recipient of Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1987), Padmashri (1997), and Padmabhushan (2001), Hazarika was awarded with Dada Saheb Phalke Award (1992), India's highest award in cinema, by the Government of India and Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship (2008), the highest award of the Sangeet Natak Akademi, India's The National Academy for Music, Dance and Drama. He was posthumously awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India's second-highest civilian award, in 2012. Hazarika also held the position of the Chairman of the Sangeet Natak Akademi from December 1998 to December 2003.
