Earlier this month, a mass fight broke out during a football match between Serbia and Albania after a drone carrying Albania's flag flew onto the field. Albanians (Albanian: Shqiptarët) are an ethnic group native to Albania and neighbouring countries. In the context of an ethnicity, they are commonly referred to as ethnic Albanians to distinguish the group from the use of the term Albanians as referring to citizens of Albania. They speak the Albanian language. More than half of all Albanians live in Albania and Kosovo. The Albanian diaspora also exists in a number of other countries.
While the exonym Albania for the general region inhabited by the Albanians does hark back to Classical Antiquity, the name was lost within the Albanian language, the Albanian endonym being shqiptar, from the term for the Albanian language, shqip, a derivation of the verb shqiptoj "to utilize a correct Albanian pronunciation ". This theory pertains to Hahn and it holds that perhaps the word is ultimately a loan from Latin excipio. Thus, the Albanian endonym, like Slav and others, is in origin a term for "those who speak [intelligibly, the same language]". However another plausible theory has been advanced by Maximilian Lambertz to explain the endonym as derived from the Albanian noun shqype or shqiponjë (eagle), which, according to Albanian folk etymology, denoted a bird totem dating from the times of Skanderbeg, as displayed on the Albanian flag.

Up until the mid-90s if you were openly gay in Albania, you would be sent to prison. Many homosexuals stil face bigotry and violence, even in their own homes. In the last five years, Albania has seen a dynamic LGBTQ movement. Gay activist have created secret guest houses in Tirana that offer shelter to young homosexuals who have been brutally abused. VICE Greece traveled to Albania and recorded rare glimpses into the lives of people who have been victimized and neglected because of their sexual orientation in one of Europe's most homophobic countries. Wearing a Serbian Shirt in an Albanian Cafe
I spent the day in Leskovac, Serbia. I ate like a king at the big meat festival they have every year. I will upload a nice video of the entire festival tomorrow. I decided to take a trip to the city of Presevo, Serbia. It is an unstable part of Serbia that is dominated by Albanians. They are the majority in Presevo and the smaller town of Bujanovac, Serbia. I get to Bujanovac and find out the bus is gone. They don't have another till tomorrow. I am wearin this white Serbian eagle shirt t-shirt. My Facebook pals tell me to be careful and to change it. I said " jebi ga" and walked all around town in this. I walked into this bar and the 7 guys working there were all Albanian. They were friendly to me and I had no issues. I told them about my love for Serbia and how i live in Nis. They were more intersted in me bringing them to Chicago! :) Nice guys! Check it out! -

KosovaPress: Po nuk po ndodhë e njëjta gjë me kriminelët serb të cilët vranë rreth 13,000 shqiptarë, dhunuan mijëra gra dhe akoma mungojnë rreth 2,000 pengje të luftës, ata po jetojnë të lirë dhe nuk po akuzohen nga drejtësia e Kosovës. Si e shihni ju këtë veprimtari të drejtësisë së Kosovës? Albania PM eyes EU membership within 10 years

Rama was in Brussels for two days of talks with senior EU officials. He was sworn in as premier on Sunday after winning a parliamentary election on June 23rd. A key part of Rama's campaign centred on forging deeper ties with the EU. "We made a lot of progress, but there is a lot to do. and I very much hope that within the next ten years, this ambition will be accomplished and that Albania will be a full member of the European Union," Rama said. The European Commission has laid out 12 key priorities that Tirana must focus on if it is ever to join the bloc. Steven Blockmans, the head of foreign policy unit at the Centre for European Policy Studies, said that "tangible progress has been made." "They now have a new ombudsman, which was required. They have scrapped parliamentary immunity and they've adopted an administrative courts law," Blockmans said. Other issues to address include strengthening the rule of law and property rights, as well as fighting against organised crime and corruption. Blockmans warned that even with further reform, Albania's bid to join the EU may win little support with member states. "Albania being the single most corrupt in Europe, according to Transparency International, one of the poorest countries in Europe. It will have problems in facing some of the more vaguely formulated requirements by the European Commission," he said. "Politics seems to be embroiled with organised crime. This casts a dark shadow over the ambition of Albania to join the European Union. It is certainly perceived as such in the capitals of the member states." When asked by Euronews how exactly he would clean up Albania's image, Rama provided few details. "It's very clear. Those who got in got in through a path of modernisation. So we need to modernise. We need to modernise our institutions; we need to modernise our services; we need to modernise our ways of communicating. We are ready to do it and we will do it," he said. ALBANIA: PRESIDENT REXHEP MEIDANI KOSOVO INTERVIEW
English/Nat Albanian president Rexhap Meidani has outlined the purpose of talks with U-N Secretary General Kofi Annan, who is visiting Tirana on Thursday. Meidani remains firmly convinced the conflict in neighbouring Kosovo can be resolved but only if an international protectorate is established in the region. The Albanian president spoke in Tirana on Wednesday, ahead of Kofi Annan's visit. Rexhap Meidani outlined his thoughts on how various factors in the crisis could be overseen by international organisations. SOUNDBITE: (English) "For me, I consider like a solution, not a final one, like an intermediate solution, I consider this international protectorate or this international administration composed of two elements. The military element, in this international force led by NATO, has several components. Like humanitarian aspect, institutional aspect, under the umbrella of OSCE (Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe), humanitarian aspect under umbrella of High Commissioner for Refugees. And also economic aspect under umbrella of European Union, US or the group G7." SUPER CAPTION: Rexhep Meidani, Albanian President Meidani says both the conflict and the refugee crisis on Albanian territory are international problems. SOUNDBITE: (English) "I don't consider now this problem only an Albanian problem. Now it's an international problem. It's a question to defeat this machine of crime and genocide and ethnic cleansing, so I don't consider this an Albanian problem, and Albania, having been supported by different countries, different international organisations, I think would resist." SUPER CAPTION: Rexhep Meidani, Albanian President He backed the five point plan put forward by the G8 last week but also said Milosevic's war crimes must not be overlooked. SOUNDBITE: (English) "All are agree with five conditions. The most important is these five to be fulfilled for different elements. Maybe they have to be discussed more, and at the same time they're also looking for different diplomatic and political solutions. But for me it's important to continue anyway, but at the same time to consider Milosevic like a criminal of war." Tani pas shumë vitesh ish-ushtarët e UÇK-së po burgosen siq janë Fatmir Limaj dhe shokët e tij dhe tani Grupi i Llapit në përbërje të komandant Remit dhe bashkëluftëtarëve të tij, si mendoni ju, a është ky veprim i drejtë sepse ata kanë kaluar më herët nëpër këtë situatë dhe janë shpallur të pafajshëm për të njëjtën aktakuzë?
Walker:Kur i shikon rezultatet në Hagë ku ishin proceset gjyqësore kundër komandant Ramushit dhe pastaj Fatmir Limës, ata ishin në Hagë dhe kaluan disa vite në bug dhe u shpallën të pa-fajshëm. Proceset gjyqësore që po ndodhin në Kosovë, tash po flasim për Fatmir Limën kanë të bëjnë më shumë me çështjet e brendshme në Kosovë, ngjarjet që kanë të bëjnë me periudhën epas-luftës në Kosovë, të paktën unë kështu mendoj .
Mendoj se prokurorët në Hagë u munduan të përdorin çdo gjë që te paraqesin prova për dënimin e Fatmir Limës dhe Ramush Haradinajt si kriminel dhe në këtë mënyrë prokurorët e Hagës dështuan tmerrësisht. Nëse paraqitet pyetja se pse dështuan, atëhere përgjigja është se ata nuk ishin kriminelë të luftës.
Procest gjyqësore që po ndodhin tani në Kosovë duken si aktakuza të një lloji tjetër, dhe nëse ndaj këtyre njerëzve që po dërgohen para drejtësisë do të jetë një proces i drejtë gjyqësor atëhere unë pajtohem me të.
Unë kam qenë shumë i mërzitur me atë që Haga bënte më herët, duke provuar që të bëjnë krahasime ndërmjet kriminelëve të luftës nga Serbia të cilët kane bërë vepra kaq të tmerrshme dhe në anën tjetër ata i akuzuan edhe dy-tre komandantë të UÇK-së vetëm pse dëshironin të paraqesin një lloj balancimi , e drejtësia nuk ndahet kështu.
KosovaPress: Po nuk po ndodhë e njëjta gjë me kriminelët serb të cilët vranë rreth 13,000 shqiptarë, dhunuan mijëra gra dhe akoma mungojnë rreth 2,000 pengje të luftës, ata po jetojnë të lirë dhe nuk po akuzohen nga drejtësia e Kosovës. Si e shihni ju këtë veprimtari të drejtësisë së Kosovës?
Walker:Jo, Balanca se kush ka shkaktuar krimet e luftës në Kosove dihet se është e stërngarkuar në anën e forcave ushtarake të Serbisë dhe krimet janë bërë më forcën e ofruar nga qeveria e tyre, kurse UÇK-ja ishte ne male pa asnjë forcë nga qeveria. T'i akuzosh ata se kanë shkaktuar disa incidente duke provuar që të balancojnë me krimet masive që i kanë bërë forcat e sigurimit Serb, mendoj se kjo është qesharake. Mendoj se Haga më në fund e kuptoi këtë gabim.
KosovaPress: Pra ju nuk pajtoheni me mënyrën se si po organizohen proceset e montuara gjyqësore?
Walker:Unë po pres të shoh se çfarë po bëjnë në mënyrën e paraqitjes së aktakuzave, nëse ata vërtetë i procesojnë këto raste nën rregullat e ligjit dhe nën sistemin e drejtësisë, por nëse këto procese po bëhen nën ndikimin e politikës, kjo nuk mund të quhet drejtësi.

Nëse paraqitet pyetja se pse dështuan, atëhere përgjigja është se ata nuk ishin kriminelë të luftës.
Procest gjyqësore që po ndodhin tani në Kosovë duken si aktakuza të një lloji tjetër, dhe nëse ndaj këtyre njerëzve që po dërgohen para drejtësisë do të jetë një proces i drejtë gjyqësor atëhere unë pajtohem me të.
Unë kam qenë shumë i mërzitur me atë që Haga bënte më herët, duke provuar që të bëjnë krahasime ndërmjet kriminelëve të luftës nga Serbia të cilët kane bërë vepra kaq të tmerrshme dhe në anën tjetër ata i akuzuan edhe dy-tre komandantë të UÇK-së vetëm pse dëshironin të paraqesin një lloj balancimi , e drejtësia nuk ndahet kështu.
KosovaPress: Po nuk po ndodhë e njëjta gjë me kriminelët serb të cilët vranë rreth 13,000 shqiptarë, dhunuan mijëra gra dhe akoma mungojnë rreth 2,000 pengje të luftës, ata po jetojnë të lirë dhe nuk po akuzohen nga drejtësia e Kosovës. Si e shihni ju këtë veprimtari të drejtësisë së Kosovës?
Walker:Jo, Balanca se kush ka shkaktuar krimet e luftës në Kosove dihet se është e stërngarkuar në anën e forcave ushtarake të Serbisë dhe krimet janë bërë më forcën e ofruar nga qeveria e tyre, kurse UÇK-ja ishte ne male pa asnjë forcë nga qeveria. T'i akuzosh ata se kanë shkaktuar disa incidente duke provuar që të balancojnë me krimet masive që i kanë bërë forcat e sigurimit Serb, mendoj se kjo është qesharake. Mendoj se Haga më në fund e kuptoi këtë gabim.
KosovaPress: Pra ju nuk pajtoheni me mënyrën se si po organizohen proceset e montuara gjyqësore?
Walker:Unë po pres të shoh se çfarë po bëjnë në mënyrën e paraqitjes së aktakuzave, nëse ata vërtetë i procesojnë këto raste nën rregullat e ligjit dhe nën sistemin e drejtësisë, por nëse këto procese po bëhen nën ndikimin e politikës, kjo nuk mund të quhet drejtësi.

Albania should join the European Union "within the next ten years", PM Edi Rama said in an interview broadcast on euronews on Wednesday.
Rama was in Brussels for two days of talks with senior EU officials. He was sworn in as premier on Sunday after winning a parliamentary election on June 23rd.
A key part of Rama's campaign centred on forging deeper ties with the EU.
"We made a lot of progress, but there is a lot to do. and I very much hope that within the next ten years, this ambition will be accomplished and that Albania will be a full member of the European Union," Rama said.
The European Commission has laid out 12 key priorities that Tirana must focus on if it is ever to join the bloc.
Steven Blockmans, the head of foreign policy unit at the Centre for European Policy Studies, said that "tangible progress has been made."
"They now have a new ombudsman, which was required. They have scrapped parliamentary immunity and they've adopted an administrative courts law," Blockmans said.
Other issues to address include strengthening the rule of law and property rights, as well as fighting against organised crime and corruption.
Blockmans warned that even with further reform, Albania's bid to join the EU may win little support with member states.
"Albania being the single most corrupt in Europe, according to Transparency International, one of the poorest countries in Europe. It will have problems in facing some of the more vaguely formulated requirements by the European Commission," he said.
"Politics seems to be embroiled with organised crime. This casts a dark shadow over the ambition of Albania to join the European Union. It is certainly perceived as such in the capitals of the member states."
When asked by Euronews how exactly he would clean up Albania's image, Rama provided few details.
"It's very clear. Those who got in got in through a path of modernisation. So we need to modernise. We need to modernise our institutions; we need to modernise our services; we need to modernise our ways of communicating. We are ready to do it and we will do it," he said.
In October, the European Commission will deliver its next assessment on aspiring candidate countries such as Albania.

The Albanian president spoke in Tirana on Wednesday, ahead of Kofi Annan's visit.
Rexhap Meidani outlined his thoughts on how various factors in the crisis could be overseen by international organisations.

"For me, I consider like a solution, not a final one, like an intermediate solution, I consider this international protectorate or this international administration composed of two elements. The military element, in this international force led by NATO, has several components. Like humanitarian aspect, institutional aspect, under the umbrella of OSCE (Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe), humanitarian aspect under umbrella of High Commissioner for Refugees. And also economic aspect under umbrella of European Union, US or the group G7."

Meidani says both the conflict and the refugee crisis on Albanian territory are international problems.

He backed the five point plan put forward by the G8 last week but also said Milosevic's war crimes must not be overlooked.

The U-N Secretary-General is also set to visit Kukes, and will make a brief visit to the refugee camps.
