Viruthan Shanku is a 1968 Malayalam comedy film directed by P. Venu, starring Adoor Bhasi and Ambika in the lead roles.
Viruthan Shanku is the story of Vikraman (Adoor Bhasi) and how he tricks people and steals their valuables in a comic way and also how he wins the heart of Kunjikkavu (Ambika).
The film starts with Vikraman (Adoor Bhasi) returning home from Madras after completing his studies. On reaching his Tharavad he understands that his elder brother (Kottarakara) moved out of their house after marrying an young woman and is now under the control of his mother-in-law. He is also controlling all the wealth of the Tharavad, leaving their sister (Aranmula Ponnamma), who is a widow, and her three daughters in poverty. .
Vikraman was asked to prove himself as a smart thief by the chief. He also directed his men to observe Vikraman. Vikraman started to trick people by using various disguises. He disguised himself as old Brahmin, washerman, cloth seller etc. He stole various items like diamond ring, expensive silk clothes, gold necklace, bicycle, horse etc. He also adopted the name "Shanku" during this time. Meanwhile the dacoits visited Vikraman's elder brother (Kottarakara) and punished him for not taking care of his siter and family and make him promise to take care of them in the future. He understood his mistake and returned to his sister and family and look after them. Shanku went to the house of a senior advocate (Thikkurissy) and tricked his wife (Sukumari) and his sister Kunjikkavu (Ambika) and stole their gold chain, silk clothes and even their house key. Shanku on seeing Kunjikkavu instantly fell in love with her. Even though fooled, Kunjikkavu developed and admiration towards Shanku and gradually fell in love. Shanku successfully completed his task and the dacoit chief let Shanku return his son back to his home. After that, Shanku returned all the items he stole to their respective owners. Then, Shanku disguised himself as a Carnatic music teacher and took up the role of Kunjikkavu's music teacher. Even Kunjikkavu didn't realise that the teacher is Shanku. Meanwhile, he tried to understand Kunjikkavu's mind and told her his life story. Hearing all that, Kunjikkavu told Shanku that she too loves him. Then an old and rich Brahmin came to marry Kunjikkavu. Her brother and sister in law agreed for the proposal even though Kunjikkavu sternly opposed it. In the meantime, the expelled dacoit shot the chief and tried to take over as the chief of the gang. But Shanku brought the injured chief to the scene and he killed the rebel dacoit. Before he dies, the chief announce Shanku as the new chief. But Shanku wants the dacoits to lead a normal life and dissolved the gang. Then Shanku with the help of fellow dacoits threatened the groom and made him flee to Kasi. Then Shanku as music teacher stepped in and offered to marry Kunjikkavu to avoid the embarrassment of having the marriage cancelled. But, Kunjikkavu opposed this proposal also and announced openly that she will only marry Shanku. Then Shanku removed the disguise of the music teacher and revealed who he is. In the end, with the consent and blessing of all their relatives, Shanku and Kunjikkavu got married.

Adoor Gopalakrishnan’s films map the history of the region from the inside, for all his films are autobiographical in a way and are about different aspects of Kerala society and life. This documentary makes an attempt to look at how the filmmaker dealt with human conditions at the most elemental level, their keen observation and intense sensibility about the ‘local’ that makes his films universal in appeal. Adoor Gopalakrishnan’s powerful narratives about dislocation, primarily on men and women who have been physically and psychically displaced from mainstream society. Their search for self, identity, home, and freedom becomes a major concern in these films.
Vipin graduated from Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute, Calcutta, and received the Charles Wallace Arts Award for research at the British Film Institute, London, and India Office Records, London. His films have won the short Tiger Award-Rotterdam, National Award-India, Golden Pearl- HIFF, Kodak Award, Kerala State Film Award, IDPA Award and the John Abraham National Awards. Apart from being widely shown in film festivals and art museums, two of his films have been acquired for permanent archiving at the US Library of Congress. He is the recipient of the prestigious Sanskriti Award for Cultural Achievement in Filmmaking.
Rajiv, an alumnus of the Universities of Oxford and Columbia, is a writer, television producer-director, documentary film maker, a close personal student of HH The Dalai Lama for whom he manages as Trustee/Secretary The Foundation for Universal Responsibility. He is best known as the former acclaimed host of one of India's longest running talk shows on public television, In Conversation.

The Film brings to light the story of a group of elderly Buddhist nuns from Ladakh, the last generation of unordained and uneducated women in robes. They lead quiet lives in isolated high mountains working as domestic helps and road construction labourers. Neglected by religious and social systems for centuries, the new Nyerma Nunnery is their last call for dignity and enhancement and purification of their religious status.

The most important day in the Zoroastrian calendar falls on the Spring Equinox, and is celebrated as New Year’s day or ‘Navroz’. The film ‘Navroz: The New Day’ explores how the three thousand year old spring festival of Navroz is celebrated in India by the Parsi and Irani communities. While this festival is celebrated the world over, this film aims to bring to the world the uniqueness of the Parsi/Irani community in India and how they celebrate and give thanks. The festivities are an ode to spring, newness and righteousness. Structurally, the film takes the form of the single day of Navroz, taking the viewer on a journey, through various spaces, of what a typical New Years day is like in a Parsi household - from quiet piety at dawn to a gregarious feast at dusk.
Divya has been working in the field of documentary film making and photography for the last five years. Trained at the School of Media and Cultural Studies (TISS), her body of work engages with issues of gender, public space and documenting oral histories of minority communities in India. In addition to independent films Inside Out (2010), Dere tun Dilli (2012) and Qissa-e Parsi (2014) she has collaborated with NGOs and institutions across the country, generating archival, training and research material which has been showcased as films, audio visual exhibits and online archives. Currently she lives and works between Mumbai, Delhi and Mhow.

We were staying at our family friend home -Suriyanalli. Booked a jeep to visit this lovely place called Kolukkumalai and region's oldest tea factory.
Started off at 10 am from Upper suriya nalli . After a short
bumpy ride of 10 min's we reached the Harrisons estate. We had to buy an entrance ticket for using RPG's private, ill maintained road. After a km of tar road, the mud track gives way for boulder track. The mud track or road is fit only for the local jeeps and local trained drivers. Pregnant women and people with back ache - never make the mistake of going on this trip.
After another 10 min's drive - the discomfort disappears as the breath taking views unfolds along the side as we see the sprawling tea estates of Harrisons. We had to negotiate 9 hair pin bends; at the 4th H/P bend, jeep had to go on reverse and turn to the road we had to go. It was a scary experience as one slip or mistake will result in a straight ticket to hell. However, the scenery sourrounding was so breath takingly beuatifull that we got totally engrossed in its beauty. We stopped at several places to savour the beauty of nature and to see the cropping of fresh tea leaves It was just awsome sight to see the tea gardens as long as your eyes can see.
After an hours journey we reached a spot from which we can see the beautifull view of Kodaikanal peak. It was a very beautifull sight to see the majestic 2nd highest peak of the south India. There was a small Christian shrine at the corner.. I am sure many would have prayed / thanked there for a safe journey. A little walk of 10 mins brought us to another landmark of the area called the 'Echo point' or 'Echo spot'. stand at this spot and shout to hear its echoing sound. View is very beautifull. Here, one can take a picture with the backdrop of Kolukkumali hill. The jeep driver acting as our guide was explaining that one can trek to Kodaikanal from the Echo spot, in 4 hours. While, I am pessimistic about the estimated time of 4 hours which involved crossing of a huge valley and then a mountain - my visual estimation estimated that it is a do able job, perhaps on a full day trekking trip.
Soon we were on our way to see the oldest tea factory of the region. After a drive of 15 min's we reached the Kolukkumalai Tea factory. Built by the British in the year 1935, the factory still produces excellent tea. The factory tour cost INR 75/- per head. As you complete the formalities, you are treated to nice tasty cup of tea. Kids too can enjoy a cup of iced tea with lemon. Normal tea with milk & sugar and Iced lemon tea was too good. There was a pleasant auroma and flavour in the tea.
Factory tour started off at the Whithering section, where the fresh tea leaves, hand plucked from the tea gardens are dried by blowing natural air.
Return journey from the KTF was another memorable trip as the downward journey in the jeep was no less than a roller coaster ride. Breath taking views, jaw dropping near misses of shooting off the roads at several locations was a life-time excitement. As we reached the hospitable road - I wished that these roads on which I had a roller coaster ride - let them be the way they are. At least, this will disuade faster detoriaration brought by easy accessibility to disconcerned people who care a damn for environment. I was happy to see very less amount of garbage in and around Kolakkumali hill. It is so appropriate to read Munnar's pitch on safe environment - ' take all your memories and do not leave your impressions'.
After an hour's drive we reached back to Suriyanalli at 3.00 PM for a well deserved lunch.

View from the lookout tower in Thenmala. What you can see from the lookout tower here is the Kallada river and an aerial view of the forest around. This place is named Ottakkal and is one of the major point of Kallada Irrigation Project (KIP). From here the irrigation canal branches of KIP starts. Mainly two canal wings the right bank main canal system and left bank main canal system starts from this weir dam.
Thenmala lookout point is one of the major stopping points on the way to Thenmala dam and other attractions. The view form this site is not supposed to be like this with a a dry river course. As thenmala hydro project is an irrigation project and the season now it's rainy season, maintainance works are done now closing the water flow into the irrigation canals from the Dam reservoir. Usually you can see water gushing out through the water level regulation bridge-spillway and splashing onto the rocks in the river course. It will appear like a white stream of river flowing between the forested land. Technically these type of points in the rivers are termed as whitewater points as the river flow appears white and the current is random, mostly danger zone of rivers.

The weir dam at Ottakkal, part of Kallada Irrigation Project constructed about 5 Kilometres down the main dam[across Kallada river at Parappar, the Parappar Dam]. Weir dams are usually constructed to increase the waterlevel of the river inorder to make the river more navigable, to prevent sea water from entering the river if near to sea etc.
Here in Thenmala this weir dam maintains the waterlevel inorder to feed the two main canal branches of Kallada Irrigation Project. This place is termed as the waterpickup point of the KIP canals.Waterflow into the irrigation canals are regulated from here using water gates or shutters. The weir dam catchment is dry coz the Main Dam built upstream is closed for maintainance. You can see the right bank canal starting after the weir bridge and the left bank canal is starting on the other side from the dam's catchment area itself and advances through the forest. Its not much visible for covered by the vegetation there.

The Irrigatin potential of Kallada Irrigation Project is 61630 Hector Acre. Within this 39530ha, ie about 65% is under right Bank main canal and 22100 ha under left bank main canal.
The right bank main canal is of 68 Kms length with 4 branches and distributory system. Left bank main canal is about 56 Kms long with three branches and distributory system.
Right bank canal along with its branches irrigates areas in taluks of Kunnathur, Pathanapuram, Kozhencherry, Adoor, Mavelikkara, Karunagapally and Karthikapally. Left bank canal with the branches serves places in kottarakkara, Pathanapuram and Kollam taluks.
You can walk down to the river base and weir bridge from the lookout point. The lookout point tower is one storied with spiral staircase. You will get an aerial view of the weir bridge, river and a distant view of the western Ghat mountain ranges from here. Driving into the weir bridge may need permission of authorities. As said by a man in one of the shops by the time we arrived here there was the threat of a leapord that came out of the deep forests. He said the wild cat had already tasted some of the domestic animals and the forest guards are trying to trap it for days. Leaving the thoughts of the leapord we continued our drive towards Thenmala Parappar main dam and eco tourism point.

The Trac-Bug is a compact friction drive cutting machine that will ride on any standard 6" (152 mm) V-grooved track. A solid-state variable speed control allows the Trac-Bug to travel and carry a torch at precise speeds producing a machined quality cut or bevel. Plate cutting and welding preparation can now be done quickly and with a high degree of precision. Quality bevels produced with the Trac-Bug reduce fit-up and grinding time and lay a foundation for a stronger weld.
The Trac-Bug is available in two standard configurations, for Oxy-Fuel cutting TRB-1000 and for Plasma Cutting TRB-1500. Each version is equipped with a 22-7/8" (581 mm) geared rack with 1-3/8" (47.6 mm) diameter machine torch holder that will accommodate a 32 pitch rack.

Collector Inspects Courtallam palace
Inspection:Kollam Collector Pranab Jyothinath, along with officials, inspecting the properties of the palace at Courtallam in Tamil Nadu on Monday.
District Collector Pranab Jyothinath has initiated some swift action as part of the moves announced by the State government to maintain possession and protect the palace and 56 acres of land that belong to the Kerala government at Courtallam in Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu.
The Collector inspected the palace and its properties on Monday along with Revenue and Public Works Department officials. District Law Officer Shaji Mon has been asked to prepare a detailed list of all the assets within the property and Mr. Jyothinath will submit a comprehensive report to the State on Wednesday.
The palace and its estates were part of the erstwhile Travancore and the palace was constructed in 1882 by the then Maharaja Vishakham Tirunal Rama Varma. The land, which belonged to the Travancore government before the formation of Kerala, was transferred to the Kerala government in 1957.
Though, in the records of the government, the PWD division office at Punalur is in charge of the palace, it was a Courtallam-based 'mafia' which was in actual control of the properties.
Huge income was being derived by the mafia from these properties by renting it out for tourists during the season and the palace for wedding receptions. After the inspection, the Collector said that all records pertaining to the property showed that the Kerala government was its rightful owner and as per the resurvey it was found to be 55.60 acres.
All revenue and expenditure accounts related to the palace for the past five years will be audited, he said.
The Collector formally marked the boundaries of the estates as per the records of the Survey Department. Boards displaying that the property is legally owned by the Kerala government in English, Tamil and Malayalam will be put up on all sides of the property.
The team accompanying the Collector included the Deputy Collector (Land Revenue) Sheeba George; the PWD executive engineer Jayachandra Babu, and the DTPC secretary K.T. Jayakrishnan..
