Director Evgeny Afineevsky discusses his film WINTER ON FIRE: UKRAINE'S FIGHT FOR FREEDOM, which screened during the STF 2015 Fall season. With Thom Powers.

"No one was expecting to have kids beaten at 4 o'clock in the morning, no one was expecting people to be kidnapped or killed. It was just unfolding," explains Evgeny Afineevsky, director of the film Winter on Fire: Ukraine's Fight for Freedom which documents the 93 day uprising that led to the downfall of president Viktor Yanukovych. The film recently won the People's Choice documentary award at the Toronto International Film Festival and will be debuting on Netflix on Oct. 9th. "We were just trying to capture every moment and document everything. All of a sudden I was in the middle of this uprising and I was capturing the history."
Afineevsky's film, which he calls "a cinematic monument" to the heroes of the Ukrainian revolution, is an sympathetic portrait of the conditions and actions of the protesters fighting for closer ties to the European Union. While some reviews have criticized the single viewpoint, Afineevsky defended his vision during a recent interview with Reason TV's Nick Gillespie.
"The other side of the story is politicians and police. Police were not allowed to talk to the camera....And the politicians, every time you point a camera to the politician his story is promoting himself, and promoting his party, and his agenda. It is not the human story that I was trying to capture. For me this movie was the human story... not the politicians' agendas."

Evgeny Afineevsky is a Russian film director and producer. He is best known for directing Winter on Fire: Ukraine's Fight for Freedom. He is the member of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, Directors Guild of America, Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television, Israeli Film and Television Academy, Los Angeles Film Teachers Association and a Russian Union of Cinematography.

We feel that we have been able to combine multicultural elements and offer a fresh, unique perspective on an otherwise sensitive subject matter. Our movie using the language of comedy to address a difficult and sensitive subject with empathy by creating light and funny characters that are nearly caricatures of themselves. This humor then emulates from the characters, even when a given situation may not demand humor.
They often say that in a movie "the title says it all," but that is not exactly true -- this movie is about love, tolerance and acceptance in the family. Where old traditions meets modern romance. It doesn't matter whom your son is dating: a girl with different color skin or mentality, a boy with a different ethnicity or religion, maybe someone with Cancer or HIV; we are all human beings and we are all equal! Behind the million of jokes in our movie and through the midst of the stereotypes that are still among us today, the true premise of love and acceptance is revealed in Oy Vey! My Son is Gay!

'Winter on Fire: Ukraine's Fight for Freedom' Comes to Netflix
"No one was expecting to have kids beaten at 4 o'clock in the morning, no one was expecting people to be kidnapped or killed. It was just unfolding," explains Evgeny Afineevsky, director of the film Winter on Fire: Ukraine's Fight for Freedom which documents the 93 day uprising that led to the downfall of president Viktor Yanukovych. The film recently won the People's Choice documentary award at the Toronto International Film Festival and will be debuting on Netflix on Oct. 9th. WINTER ON FIRE: UKRAINE’S FIGHT FOR FREEDOM is the Oscar nominated documentary exploring the three months of protest that united people in Ukraine for a revolution calling for the resignation of President Viktor Yanukovych. Centered in Kiev’s Maidan Square, director Evgeny Afineevsky reflects on returning to Kiev to make the film, how he acquired all of the footage and what it was like to document the unity of the Ukrainian people. Afineevsky also discusses the media coverage of the protests as well as the role of leaders in this episode of BYOD hosted by Ondi Timoner.

WINTER ON FIRE: UKRAINE'S FIGHT FOR FREEDOM: During three months in 2013 and 2014, student demonstrations in Kiev's Maidan Square developed into a revolution by diverse groups of people calling for the resignation of President Viktor Yanukovych. Hoping for stronger ties to the European Union, protesters fought against government military forces to oppose Yanukovych's efforts to ally with Russia.
Evgeny Afineevsky is a Russian film director and producer. He is best known for directing Winter on Fire: Ukraine's Fight for Freedom. He is the member of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, Directors Guild of America, Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television, Israeli Film and Television Academy, Los Angeles Film Teachers Association and a Russian Union of Cinematography.

Our movie using the language of comedy to address a difficult and sensitive subject with empathy by creating light and funny characters that are nearly caricatures of themselves.
