It's an expendable team, but relying on paid informants, they track and kill several in Europe and Lebanon. They must constantly look over their shoulders for the CIA, KGB, PLO, and their own sources. English/Nat
Israel's Prime Minister Ehud Barak said on Tuesday that he's not closing the door to peace in the Middle East, but will do what is necessary to protect his people.
Barak spoke following Monday's airstrikes on several targets in Lebanon.
Thousands of Israelis fled the country's tense northern border after the bombing which was carried out in retaliation for recent Hezbollah attacks that killed five Israeli soldiers.
Israel's northern town of Kiryat Shemona.
Prime Minister Ehud Barak visited the area and met with local people in an underground bomb shelter.
His visit follows Israeli airstrikes on power stations and Hezbollah guerrilla bases in southern Lebanon.
The Israeli prime minister accused Hezbollah of violating the understanding brokered by the United States not to target civilians in attacks.
Israel announced on Tuesday that it may withdraw troops from Lebanon months before a self-imposed July deadline - with or without Syrian consent.
Syria, the main power broker in Lebanon, has always said publicly that it wants Israel to pull out of southern Lebanon.
A unilateral Israeli withdrawal, however, could increase international pressure on Syria to leave as well and would weaken its position in peace negotiations.
Until now, Syria has used the conflict in Lebanon as a bargaining chip in negotiations for the return of the Golan Heights - Syria's main demand in peace talks.
If the Israelis pull-out unilaterally, they could be less open to Syrian pressure.
Barak said his country's military operation early Tuesday was intended to signal to the Lebanese government and Hezbollah, and even to the Syrians, that Israel is not ready to accept unilateral violations.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"Our operation yesterday was intended to signal to the Lebanese government, the Hezbollah and indirectly even to the Syrian state, that Israel is not ready to accept a unilateral violation of the peace agreement and whatever it takes to defend our citizens, we will do, it as would do in the same situation any free world government."
SUPER CAPTION: Ehud Barak, Israeli Prime Minister
The prime minister had campaigned on a promise to withdraw Israeli troops from south Lebanon by July.
In the past he has said he would prefer to make such a move in agreement with Syria and Lebanon.
Following the airstrikes on Monday, tanks, heavy artillery, armoured personnel carriers and army trucks have massed on the Israeli side of the old border with Lebanon.
But Israeli army sources say the military build-up isn't a precursor of imminent action in the security zone, following the airstrikes.
Israeli defence sources say three electricity relay stations - near Beirut, the northern city of Tripoli and Baalbek near the Syrian border - were hit in the raids.
An alleged Hezbollah underground headquarters in Baalbek was also attacked.
The raids have made the resumption of peace talks with Syria - a major goal of Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak - appear even more remote.
Fearing retaliatory rocket attacks by Hezbollah, tens of thousands of Israelis living in towns and villages along Lebanese border clogged roads.
They headed south on Monday night or sought cover in underground bomb shelters.
The Mayor of Kiryat Shemona was at a command centre in the beleaguered northern Israeli border town on Tuesday, helping to shelter people.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"The people are in the shelters, the schools are closed and we are expecting a miracle. We are wishing that peace will come."
SUPERCAPTION: Haim Barbibay, Mayor of Kiryat Shemona
For the meantime people living on the Israel and Lebanon border say they're taking no chances.
They too are waiting for a peaceful solution .

Israel’s former minister of military affairs Ehud Barak says two ministers voted down a plan to attack Iran back in 2011.
Barak said the attack plans were drawn up and approved by him and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sometime between 2009 and 2010. But, they lost their majority in a so-called forum of eight ministers, after Yuval Steinitz and Moshe Ya'alon voted down the plan. According to Barak, Israel’s then army chief also opposed the plan. The revelations were made in a tape recording obtained by Israel’s Channel Two. Nuclear-armed Israel has been threatening Iran with military action over the past years. Iran has warned of a crushing response in case of any aggression.

The Middle East has seen much turmoil in its fragmented history, and with the Israeli-Palestinian process now back to square one, peace remains elusive. What's needed to make all sides settle for peace? Does the region hold a lesson for the developing conflict in Ukraine, if not an example of what to avoid? Israeli Deputy Prime Minister Ehud Barak has urged the international community to step up sanctions against Iran before they establish nuclear weapon capabilities.
Speaking at a news conference in Tokyo on Saturday, Barak also said he didn't expect Syrian President Bashar Assad to still be in power by 2013.
His comments were made amid growing tension over Iran's nuclear programme after the nation announced it had made significant progress in it's nuclear capabilities.
"I should tell you my feeling is that if this regime, which are extremely radical regime will get nuclear weapons, it will become somehow immune against toppling it down because it will get the same kind of immunity that Kim Jong Il had here in your region," Barak said.
The Israeli Deputy Prime Minister was speaking to reporters on the fifth and final day of his stay in Japan. During his visit, he met with the Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda who urged Barak not to resort to military action against Iran.
During the news conference, Barak reiterated that "no option should be removed off the table" but maintained that there is still time to move forward with tougher steps that would include sanctions against Iran's central bank.

A de facto Zionist Jew world order already exists: Jewish control of government, banking, education and media is near total.
If - before the next 9/11 - you oppose it and a conscious critical mass of humanity is formed, it can be overthrown. If not, picture a Zionist future for your children... a boot stamping on a human face - forever.
Picture also a world without pathocratic Zionism, and the misanthropic, anti-Human, supremacist, parasitic, criminal Jewish cult of hate that bore it - a cult into which unfortunate children are from birth indoctrinated through terror.

English/Nat
Just days after returning from their summit in Oslo, Ehud Barak and Yasser Arafat are returning to Europe for some speechmaking and an expected flurry of
Mideast diplomacy.
For the past month everything appears to have gone smoothly between Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.
Israel has released 199 Palestinian security prisoners and transferred 7 percent of the West Bank to Yasser Arafat's control, meeting its first obligations under the land-for-security deal.
But bigger hurdles are ahead and many commentators and analysts in the region feel these could ultimately cripple the peace process.
Ahead of schedule and showing the world that the days of broken promises and delays are over, Israeli's and the Palestinians have made much progress in recent months.
On Monday, the two sides will begin tackling issues so daunting that already there's talk about the possibility that they may not reach a final peace accord by September 2000, their self-imposed new deadline.
By then, they will have to agree on the status of Jerusalem, the future of Jewish settlements, the fate of more than 3 million Palestinian refugees and the borders of the Palestinian entity in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"They are the cornerstones of the peace process. I don't see any final settlement without solving the problem of Jewish settlements inside Palestinian territory, without solving the refugee problems, without reaching a compromise over Jerusalem. But if this government continues to say that it will not compromise over Jerusalem, and all these 'Nos' from Barak then these talks will not lead us anywhere."
SUPER CAPTION: Palestinian Minister Ziad Abu Zayyad
Ahead of the September deadline, there remains another target date introduced at Israel's insistence in the latest interim accord signed last week.
By February 15 negotiators will have to reach a number of possible solutions.
The opening positions remain as far apart as on September the 13th 1993, when Israel and the P-L-O recognised each other, making negotiations possible for the first time.
The Palestinians want to establish a state of all of the West Bank and Gaza, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
They demand the repatriation of all refugees and the dismantling of settlements unwilling to remain under Palestinian sovereignty.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"We both agreed, the Israeli side and the Palestinian side that the end result of the negotiations will be the establishment of an Palestinian state - whether they call it Palestinian entity or whether they call it the implementation of a idea of Palestinian self-determination."
SUPER CAPTION: Akiva Eldar, Israeli political Analyst
Israel wants to annex parts of the West Bank and Gaza to bring a majority of settlers under Israeli rule.
Israel says it will never relinquish parts of Jerusalem and will not permit the return of refugees to areas under its sovereignty.
Jerusalem is home to Islam's third holiest site, the Al Aqsa Mosque, which is revered by millions of Muslims who would be outraged by Palestinian concessions in the traditionally Arab eastern part of the city.

The chairman of China's National People's Congress, Li Peng, met Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak on Sunday.
Israel is looking to expand trade - particularly in the weapons industry - with China, which has occupied Tibet since 1950.
Li came to Israel just after a visit by the Dalai Lama, the Tibetan independence leader.
Li cancelled a dinner with Avraham Burg, the speaker of Israel's parliament, to protest Burg's meeting with the Dalai Lama, but said he would meet Burg later.
Israel recently announced a deal to sell China a 250 (m) million U-S dollar radar system, although China has denied the deal took place.
As part of his five-day trip to the region, which ends Tuesday, Li has met Israeli President, Ezer Weizman, and toured an Israeli communal farm.

STORYLINE:
Israel's defence minister indicated on Sunday that his country was behind the airstrike on Syria last week, in the first public comments from his government on the attack that US officials said targeted a convoy carrying anti-aircraft weapons bound for the militant group Hezbollah in neighbouring Lebanon.
Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak brought the issue up at a gathering of the world's top diplomats and defence officials in Germany
"I cannot add anything to what you have read in the newspapers about what happened in Syria several days ago but they keep telling frankly that we said and that's one another proof that when we say something we mean it. We say that we don't think it should be allowed to bring advanced weapons systems into Lebanon," he said in Munich.
Israel had not previously commented on the strike, but in the days ahead of the attack, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other top officials repeatedly warned of the dangers of Syrian weapons falling into the hands of Hezbollah and other hostile elements in the region.
The Syrian military, meanwhile, said the target of Israeli jets was a scientific research centre.
The facility is in the area of Jamraya, northwest of Damascus.
Purported images of the targeted site, aired by Syrian state television on Saturday, show destroyed cars, trucks and military vehicles.
A building has broken widows and damaged interiors, but no major structural damage.

Construction work on settlements in the West Bank continues as an American drafted deal is considered in a bid to get Israelis and Palestinians back into peace talks.
The resumption of building work of Israeli homes on disputed land after a ten-month moratorium sparked the breakdown of recent talks.

Palestinian negotiator sah-EEB' EHR'-ih-kaht says the freeze is necessary before talks can continue.

The halting of settlement building in East Jerusalem is important for the Palestinians as it's the place they want as their capital in a future state.
Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak wants the deal to work.
SOT "We have to put this whole issue of construction in the West Bank behind us and move into direct negotiations where we will have to make tough decisions as well as the Palestinians in order to put an end to our conflict and move toward peace."
The exact details of a future settlement freeze are not known but any plan would be highly contentious and require painful concessions for both sides.

Ariel Sharon has been confirmed as the leader of Israel's opposition right-wing
Likud party after easily seeing off two challengers in a vote by party members.
The legendary and controversial ex-general decisively won the party's leadership election on Thursday.
He is expected to lead the Likud out of the abyss created by Ehud Barak's crushing defeat of former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in May elections.
Ariel Sharon is still being congratulated by supporters after winning the Likud Party's leadership on Thursday.
The 71-year-old won 52 percent of the votes, more than enough to make him the outright victor without a second round run-off.
His opponents, Jerusalem mayor Ehud Olmert and former finance minister Meir Sheetrit, each took 24 percent and 22 percent of the votes respectively.
Sharon became acting head of Likud after Ehud Barak, who heads the Labour Party, trounced Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in May elections.
Netanyahu then quit as party leader after his defeat.
A new vote will be held in two years to determine who will be the Likud candidate in the next general election and analysts are speculating that the interval could give Netanyahu time to mount a comeback.
The hard-line Likud opposes most compromise with the Palestinians for peace.
Under Netanyahu, peace talks were largely stalled.
New Prime Minister Ehud Barak has pledged to move forward quickly towards making peace with the Palestinians, Syria and Lebanon.
However Sharon claims that Barak is making irresponsible and dangerous concessions to the Palestinians in his negotiations to implement a land-for-security agreement.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"Prime Minister Barak made many concessions without getting anything in return and I think that he was ready to give up all achievements in the Wye agreement. The Wye agreement altogether was a way to reduce the dangers of the Oslo agreement which was very complicated and dangerous. In the Wye agreement there were some achievement and I was sorry to see that Mr. Barak gave up without getting anything in return the achievements of the Wye agreement".
SUPER CAPTION: Ariel Sharon, Likud Party Leader
Ariel Sharon's first act as opposition leader will be to meet U-S Secretary of State Madeleine Albright on Friday.
She is in the region mediating the land-for-security deal between Barak's government and the Palestinians.

STORYLINE
The Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak abruptly announced on Monday that he is leaving the iconic Labor Party and forming a new parliamentary faction, dramatically completing a split in his party over the handling of peace talks with the Palestinians.
The unexpected move did not threaten the stability of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's parliamentary majority, and on the other hand, the rift in Labor could strengthen Netanyahu's hardline coalition by making it more monolithic.
But it would rob the coalition of its most moderate members if remaining Labor Party lawmakers quit a government they have criticised as undermining peace efforts.
Barak, a former Israeli prime minister and one of the most powerful members of the government, will stay in the ruling coalition with four followers.
Labor's eight remaining members, political doves pushing for Israel to get peace talks back on track, are expected to quit the government.
The departures would leave Netanyahu with 66 seats in the 120-seat parliament, a smaller majority but rid of dissenting voices unhappy with the state of peace talks.
Announcing his decision, Barak said he was tired of the infighting within Labor. He accused his former partners of moving too far to the dovish end of the political spectrum.
Barak told a news conference at Israel's parliament, "we want to wake up without having to compromise, apologise and explain."
"We are forming today a faction, a movement and in the future a party that will be centrist, Zionist and democratic," he said.
The new party is called Independence.
Labor has been the sole moderate party in Netanyahu's coalition, which is otherwise dominated by religious and nationalist parties that oppose major concessions to the Palestinians.
Barak and Netanyahu have had a mutually beneficial relationship.
Netanyahu, meanwhile, has given Barak extra influence in decision making.

12. Wide pan of room
STORYLINE:
Israel's defence minister said on Tuesday that despite the upheaval in the Arab world from pro-democracy uprisings, Israel should push forward with negotiations with the Palestinians.
Ehud Barak was in Paris on Tuesday for talks with the French foreign and defence ministers.
In an interview with The Associated Press he emphasised the importance of restarting the long-stalled peace talks, despite some misgivings by other members of his own government.
"We are looking at an area which is under a political earthquake, something we have not witnessed for maybe 90 years since the collapse of the Ottoman empire," he said.
"I cannot say that their (others in the government) doubts don't have a certain foundation but I still believe despite all uncertainty Israel should make a real attempt to enter negotiations," he said on Tuesday.
Since the beginning of the year, the Arab world has been wracked by pro-democracy demonstrations, which brought down the governments in Tunisia and Israel's neighbour Egypt.
There has been some worry in Israel that the new governments that emerge in the region might be more hostile to the Jewish state than their predecessors. Israeli sceptics note that elections in the Middle East have brought groups like Hamas and Hezbollah to power.
"It's clear to us that (with) these events of the Arab spring that under certain situation we might find ourselves having to defend ourselves alone," Barak said.
The latest round of peace talks broke down in September, just three weeks after their launch, with the expiration of an Israeli moratorium on settlement building in the West Bank.
The Palestinians have threatened to bypass the negotiations altogether and declare their statehood directly to the United Nations General Assembly, where they have a great deal of international support.
