Not Exactly My Sentiments

People call me a feminist if I express sentiments that differentiate me from a doormat or a prostitute. – Rebecca West, 1913

Oh really? And what exactly are prostitutes supposed to say? What are they supposed to be like? Something like “Oh sir, I’ll do anything you want as long as you pay me enough”? Is that it? Or is it “Anyone can have me as long as they pay”? Or how about “I can’t control my nympho urges so I decided to profit from it”?

I understand doormat. I don’t understand how prostitute and doormat belong in the same sentence; nor how prostitutes are unrelated to feminists. If the women who enjoy senselessly repeating this quote said it in front of a prostitute, I imagine they’d get an education in feminism.
