A countdown of the top 10 longest NBA Shots of all time (all that were televised and/or had footage available. There are a couple that got left out. They are listed below. Also below is an excerpt for how I ranked them by distance.) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Shots that had no footage available. 11. Norm Van Lier - 84 ft. shot (1977) 12. Herb Williams - 81 ft. shot (1986) 13. Bill Sharman - 80+ ft. shot (1957) HOW I RANKED: I didn't calculate the whole hypotenuse of where the player was in relation to the baseline, sideline, etc. instead I simply made an accurate educated guess for each players release point. Knowing the court is 94 feet and that the free throw line is 20 feet from the baseline, is just one of the things I kept in mind to ensure accurate ranking. If the shots were close, I took the shot that was closer to the sideline because that one would technically be farther. I strive to create a a fair and unbiased list of plays but at the same time, everyone has their own opinion on lists and no opinion is right or wrong. I judge plays based on the context of the situation, the overall difficulty, and how aesthetically pleasing the play is. Performances are not counted as 'plays'. This means that Kobe Bryant's 81 point game, Wilt Chamberlains 100 point game would not be listed on the top 10 career plays list. It is worth mentioning that there is no single definition of a 'play'. For example, if someone made a nice block on defense then immediately drove down the court and posterized someone, would that be a single play? Or would the block and the dunk be two seperate plays? I try to not throw in things that are more performance related rather than plays, but sometimes the 'play' is the overall moment of something.
