Researchers estimate there are 10,000 Marshallese in Springdale, and the flow of immigration will only increase as the effects of global warming cause more flooding on the islands, which are on average 3 feet above sea level, UA researcher Donna Davis said.
Many Marshallese were evacuated from the islands while the U.S. tested Nuclear Bombs during World War II. The Marshallese were promised that they would be able to return to their homes after the testing, but haven’t been able to because of the fallout, Davis said.
The government granted the Marshallese resident status, which gives them the right to work in, live in and freely travel between the islands and the U.S., but they are not considered citizens, said JociAnna Chong-Gum, a UA Marshallese student.
Excluding Hawaii, Springdale is home to the largest Marshallese population in the United States, Davis said.
The first Marshallese that moved to Springdale found “a community with plenty of work for people who didn’t necessarily need to speak English well or have a high level of education,” Davis said.
“We are here for better healthcare, schooling, job opportunities,” Gum said.
Eventually, family ties brought a large population to northwest Arkansas.
Despite the large population, there are only three Marshallese students at the UofA, Davis said.
The Marshallese and American lifestyles differ greatly, and that makes it difficult to branch out and go to college, Gum said.
“It’s very different compared to the Marshallese culture,” Gum said.
“I would say a little scary to some Marshallese who come here. It was for me.”
Gum hopes to become a doctor and return to the Marshall Islands and help with the healthcare system, she said.
People in northwest Arkansas are doing a good job accepting Marshallese culture, and any negative notions are brought on by a lack of understanding of cultural differences, Davis said.
“Simple things, like ‘why would you wear flip flops in the winter?’” Davis said.
“Our history is very rich and our culture is very rich, but not a lot of people know about it,” Gum said.

Felt like putting a video together to rep oceania (mainly polynesia & some micronesia) cuz im Palauan raised in Hawaii so I've grown to love all these cultures.
For those of you not familiar with the Oceanic cultures, we are not all Hawaiian. This video consists of (in order of appearance) Tahitian, Hawaiian, Yapese, Maori, Samoan, Cook Islander, Palauan, Tongan, Kiribati, Marshallese (first canoe shown), and a repeat of some of the cultures I have shown, and also, these are just some of the many cultures of Oceania. In the long line, all of our cultures are related in some way, which is what makes us the family and people of the Pacific.
Incase some of you were curious, I understand that the motions probably don't match the song, so ma bad.
Also, I did rip these vids from youtube. If you see any footage that came from your vid, and you wanna be recognized for that, just message me and let me know. Marshallese culture
The Marshallese culture is marked by pre-Western contact and the impact of that contact on its people afterward. The Marshall Islands were relatively isolated. Inhabitants developed skilled navigators, able to navigate by the currents to other atolls. Prior to close contact with Westerners, children went naked and men and women were topless, wearing only skirts made of mats of native materials.
Land was and remains the most important measure of a family's wealth. Land is inherited through the maternal line.
Since the arrival of Christian missionaries, the culture has shifted from a subsistence-based economy towards a more traditional western economy and modesty standards have shifted to include women covering their bare thighs.
The people are friendly and peaceful. Strangers are received warmly. Consideration for others is important to the Marshallese people. Family and community are important. Concern for others is an outgrowth of their dependence on one another. They have lived for centuries on isolated coral atolls and islands. Relatives including grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and far-flung relatives are all considered close family. The strong family ties contribute to close-knit communities rooted in the values of caring, kindness and respect. One of the most significant family events is a child's first birthday.

Researchers estimate there are 10,000 Marshallese in Springdale, and the flow of immigration will only increase as the effects of global warming cause more flooding on the islands, which are on average 3 feet above sea level, UA researcher Donna Davis said.
Many Marshallese were evacuated from the islands while the U.S. tested Nuclear Bombs during World War II. The Marshallese were promised that they would be able to return to their homes after the testing, but haven’t been able to because of the fallout, Davis said.
The government granted the Marshallese resident status, which gives them the right to work in, live in and freely travel between the islands and the U.S., but they are not considered citizens, said JociAnna Chong-Gum, a UA Marshallese student.
Excluding Hawaii, Springdale is home to the largest Marshallese population in the United States, Davis said.
The first Marshallese that moved to Springdale found “a community with plenty of work for people who didn’t necessarily need to speak English well or have a high level of education,” Davis said.
“We are here for better healthcare, schooling, job opportunities,” Gum said.
Eventually, family ties brought a large population to northwest Arkansas.
Despite the large population, there are only three Marshallese students at the UofA, Davis said.
The Marshallese and American lifestyles differ greatly, and that makes it difficult to branch out and go to college, Gum said.
“It’s very different compared to the Marshallese culture,” Gum said.
“I would say a little scary to some Marshallese who come here. It was for me.”
Gum hopes to become a doctor and return to the Marshall Islands and help with the healthcare system, she said.
People in northwest Arkansas are doing a good job accepting Marshallese culture, and any negative notions are brought on by a lack of understanding of cultural differences, Davis said.
“Simple things, like ‘why would you wear flip flops in the winter?’” Davis said.

For those of you not familiar with the Oceanic cultures, we are not all Hawaiian. Mike Campbell spent nine years as an active-duty Navy print and broadcast journalist and 21 years as a Navy civilian writer and Air Force public affairs officer. He is the author of With Our Own Eyes: Eyewitnesses to the Final Days of Amelia Earhart, and his second book on the Earhart case, Amelia Earhart: The Truth at Last, greatly expands upon the important eyewitness accounts of former American GIs who participated in the 1944 Battle of Saipan. Mike begins by explaining how he was assigned to write an article on America’s “First Lady of Flight” in 1988 and subsequently met author Thomas E. Devine during his research, who proclaimed the presence and death of Amelia Earhart and her copilot Fred Noonan on the island of Saipan after their disappearance in July 1937. Mike gives us the two versions of the story behind the vanishing of the most famous woman in the world at this time in history and highlights the sheer magnitude of the lie that has been perpetuated into present day. He talks about Earhart’s bizarre radio behavior on the day of her world famous attempt to circumnavigate the globe, the accounts of a controlled crash-landing of Earhart’s Electra NR16020 in the water off the coast of Mili Atoll seen and corroborated by many natives, and reports of an execution by the Japanese military officials. We look at the climate of the relationship between the US and Japan during this timeframe, and consider the suggestions that Earhart and Noonan were acting as spies. Castle Bravo, was the largest nuclear test ever conducted by the United States. We are endeavoring to designate March 1st, the sixty year anniversary of the hydrogen bomb, as Illumination Day. This will be an annual day to reflect and honor the Marshallese people, their culture and the islands they call home.
In mid-February, we will be publishing an international press release about "Illumination day" which will go out to 30,000 media partners in online, print, TV and radio venues.
This action-packed, fictional YA story surrounds the island of Kwajalein in the Marshall Atoll and is set in 1969. Much more than just a coming-of-age story, "Nine Degrees North" exposes the real-life history behind the nuclear testing and how it affected the Marshallese. Few know the horrors that took place out there and "Nine Degrees North" brings this to light. Our endeavor is to get the film made and bring this to the masses as a commercial vehicle.
