http://philosophyoffreedom.com
Ethical Individualism was described by Rudolf Steiner in 1894, in his Philosophy of Freedom.
While Rudolf Steiner was born a clairvoyant, but he was not born an Ethical Individualist.
He had to train his thinking to become one, just like anybody else will have to do.
Steiner developed his thinking through an education in mathematics, science and philosophy.
We have plenty of knowers.
And we have plenty of doers.
But the one who matters the most is the knowing doer, the one who acts out of knowledge.
This is the Ethical Individualist.
The Ethical Individualist feels a part of each life situation he meets.
But does not allow himself to be determined by it.
He acquires knowledge of a situation by using the method of science —observational analysis— to discover the laws at work.
The Ethical Individualist knows how to think scientifically.
He also uses thinking in regard to ethics.
The Ethical Individualist sees a certain value in all ethical principles.
And always asks in each case whether this or that principle is the more important.
To select an ethical principle, he uses the method of philosophy —conceptual analysis.
The philosophical method uses universalized or generalized concepts of things rather than the specific details.
This prevents outside influences from controlling the thinking.
The philosophical method works with pure concepts.
By thinking in pure concepts, knowledge is acquired by means of pure reasoning alone.
Pure reasoning intuitively selects the ethical principle to be applied.
Developing the ability to enter into pure reasoning is the key element in becoming a free thinking Ethical Individualist.
The Ethical Individualist is capable of rising to the level of pure reasoning.
At this level the conduct of the ethical individualist is not predetermined by his own character, or by an external authority.
The action is not a stereotyped one that merely follows rules, nor is it one that is automatically performed in response to an external stimulus.
Instead, it is an action determined purely and simply by its own ideal content.
The Ethical Individualist carries out a deed that originates within himself.
It is a free deed!
But before a universal ethical principle can be realized, it first needs to be imaginatively translated into a picture of a specific action.
This requires having imagination.
By creating idealistic imaginations he envisions a goal to strive for.
People who merely preach ethical codes without being able to turn them into a plan of action are morally unproductive.
The Ethical Individualist is imaginative and innovative.
The world the Ethical Individualist wishes to transform is already living according to certain principles and laws.
Such as the laws for understanding the world and its people, found in ecology, sociology, and psychology.
Violating these existing laws that hold things together may cause unnecessary disruption.
To avoid disruption, the Ethical Individualist studies the general scientific knowledge in his field of work.
With this knowledge he arrives at the best way to skillfully implement his idealistic imaginations.
He transforms the world without violating the natural laws already in place.
The Ethical Individualist acquires the technical knowledge needed to successfully carry out his goal.
The Ethical Individualist strives for sublimely great ideals because they have become the content of his own being.
They are his intuitions and are the driving forces that empower his will against all obstacles.
He wants them, because the translation of his intuitions into reality is his highest pleasure.
He does not regard his ethical task as a matter of duty, but rather to follow his love for the deed.
The Ethical Individualist is completely self-empowered.
In "The Philosophy of Freedom" Steiner describes the three essential capabilities he calls ethical intuition, ethical imagination, and ethical technique.
--Ethical Intuition is the capacity to intuitively select an ethical principle for a particular life situation.
--Ethical Imagination is the capacity to imaginatively translate a general ethical principle into a specific picture of the action to be carried out.
--Ethical Technique is the capacity to transform the world according to one's ethical imaginations without violating the natural laws by which things are connected.
Those who aspire to become a self-empowered Ethical Individualist, find ways to train their mind in scientific thinking, pure reasoning, creative imagination, and acquire any technical skills needed in their field of work.
wn.com/Rudolf Steiner What Is Ethical Individualism
http://philosophyoffreedom.com

The Founders and Framers drew upon Enlightenment thinkers who invented “individualism” to upset the political order, but that’s not how the world really works. That’s the thesis of an anthropology professor writing in The New York Times. In a nutshell, he says Tea Party conservatives are wrong about politics and governance, because they have a phony worldview that is refuted by the sciences, and the Scriptures — which, coincidentally agree with Democrats general view. Comrades Scott Ott, Bill Whittle and Stephen Green try to collectively come to a consensus about the myth of individualism.

In order to survive the animal is driven by natural instincts for food, water, and shelter. Social learning gives an evolutionary advantage to those who join and conform to the group.
Yet, if society is to continue evolving it needs something more than social conformity, it needs the innovation and creativity of free individuals.
The social order is only formed so it can react in favor of the individual, but society cannot produce even one free individual. Only the individual himself can complete the final stage of evolution and realize freedom.
The pursuit of individuality is the modern struggle for survival. To be true to yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something less, requires great effort.
There is a natural conflict between individualism and authority. When challenged by authority, typically individualism cannot be sustained without paying a harsh price.
No matter what anyone else asserts, an individualist will think for himself. Nothing is accepted as valid until he fits it into his own context of knowledge.
Knowing that human perfection cannot be found by following in the footsteps of another, the individualist finds his own way in the difficult ascent to freedom.
Why adoringly serve leaders who will turn out to be just as weak as yourself?
No ideals will be forced upon him. He will select his own ideals and strive for their realization, which is his highest pleasure.
We no longer believe that there is a norm of human life to which we must all strive to conform.
We are convinced that in each of us, if only we probe deep enough into the very heart of our being, there dwells something noble, something worthy of development.
We regard the perfection of the whole as depending on the unique perfection of each single individual.
We do not want to do what anyone else can do equally well. No, our contribution to the development of the world, however trifling, must be something which, by reason of the uniqueness of our nature, we alone can offer.
Never have artists been less concerned about rules and norms in art than today. Each of them asserts his right to express what is unique in him.
The structure of a language can affect how we conceptualize the world, our world-view, so there are writers who do not conform to the standard selection of words and arrangement that grammar demands.
We do not want to be dependent in any respect, and where dependence must be, we tolerate it only on condition that it coincides with a vital interest of our individuality.
Individuality is one of the fundamental characteristics of our age. There is no better expression of this phenomena than striving towards freedom with the greatest intensity.

Cultural Differences : Individualism and Collectivism
The many cultures of the world differ in a great variety of ways. One of the most
interesting ways in which cultures vary is in the extent to which they are "individualistic"
or "collectivistic." An individualist society and a collectivist society are different in many
ways.
In an individualistic culture, each person tends to think of himself or herself in terms of
his or her own characteristics and preferences-the things that make the person unique or
different from others. In a collectivistic culture, each person tends to think of himself or
herself in terms of his or her social relationships and roles-the things that make the
person a part of a larger group, such as an extended family or an ethnic group.
Another difference between individualist and collectivist cultures involves the tendency
to help others. In an individualist society, people feel some obligation to help persons
who share some group identity-such as their distant relatives, or persons from the same
town-but this obligation is not nearly as strong as in collectivist cultures. On the other
hand, people in collectivist cultures tend to feel very little inclination to help other people
who do not belong to their groups, whereas people in individualist cultures are more
often willing to help others even if they do not belong to the same group.
Another difference between individualist and collectivist cultures involves the
relationship between people and the groups to which they belong. In an individualist
culture, people usually join or leave groups when it is in their personal interest to do so.
In a collectivist culture, people usually stay with one group for a long time. For example,
people in individualist societies are more willing to quit their job, and take a new job at
another company. People in collectivist societies usually prefer to stay with one company
throughout their career. Similarly, people in individualist countries usually get married
for reasons of personal choice, and are more likely to get divorced. However, people in
collectivist societies usually get married according to the wishes of their relatives, and
are less likely to get divorced.
Western countries, such as those of western Europe and North America, are usually
considered to be very individualist. However, not all individualist countries are similar in
every way. For example, the individualism of the United States is viewed as more
"competitive" than that of socialist countries, such as Sweden. In contrast to Western
countries, the countries of most parts of Asia and Africa are usually considered to be
very collectivist. Collectivist countries also differ from each other in many ways.
The idea of individualism versus collectivism is an interesting way to understand some
of the differences between cultures. By learning about ideas like this, one can better
appreciate the customs of other peoples.

Introduction | Individualism: A Reader
Introduction by George H. Smith.
Individualism is one of most criticized and least understood ideas in social and political thought. Is individualism the ability to act independently amidst a web of social forces? A vital element of personal liberty and a shield against conformity? Does it lead to or away from unifying individuals with communities?

"...individualism is a disturbing and disintegrating force. There lies its immense value. For what it seeks is to disturb monotony of type, slavery of custom, tyranny of habit, and the reduction of man to the level of a machine" Oscar Wilde, The Soul of Man under Socialism
Everything from social fragmentation to the economic crisis, and the riots that broke out across English cities in the summer, has been blamed on a modern 'cult of individualism', epitomised by Margaret Thatcher's insistence that 'there is no such thing as society'. Labour leader Ed Miliband denounces 'a "take what you can" culture' that began in the 1980s, which he concedes New Labour did little to challenge. But Tory Prime Minister David Cameron also seeks to distance himself from his infamous predecessor, championing the 'Big Society'. It has become routine to despair of individuals' greed for consumer goods. More broadly, strong-willed individuals who know their own minds are accused of arrogance, egotism, even bullying. But isn't there something to be said for individualism? After all, the individual has historically been asssociated with independence of mind, self-determination and self-reliance. Strong individuals have been admired for their courage and imagination, even valued for the unique contributions they can make to society rather than regarded as necessarily undermining social solidarity. So are we wrong to focus on the negatives, or is it time we recognised the damaging effects of individualism? Critics remind us that the individual smoker's choice can imperil public health; one person's free speech can cause offence and sow discord for countless others; motorists who insist on their individual freedom to drive petrol-guzzling SUVs clutter the roads and pollute the air.
Meanwhile, developments in neuroscience, evolutionary psychology and genetics cast doubt on the very idea of individual autonomy: some suggest free will is an illusion. Individuals are seen as hapless and hopeless if left to their own devices, too easily influenced by the malign advertisers or populist demagogues. Paternalist policy-makers and 'choice architects' regard the idea of moral autonomy as little more than an inconvenience, preferring to nudge individuals into making the right choices. But don't diminished views of the individual also undermine the possibility of a strong society? If the 'we' in any collective comprises such feeble individuals, what is the content of society or solidarity?
Arguably, even seemingly self-sacrificing acts of public service - from volunteering to help others to laying down one's life for a greater cause - require a strong sense of personal autonomy. By contrast, if we value conformity to social norms above individuality, is our 'free will' reduced to what JS Mill called 'ape-like imitation'? And anyway, does self-interest necessarily preclude generosity, empathy and solidarity? Was selfish individualism really to blame for the summer's riots? Or was it a breakdown of any sense of individual responsibility that caused so many to join the frenzy of looting? Can 'individualism' be good for society?

Why are mysticism and individualism two words that seem to be demonized in modern day society when they were actually venerated in ancient times? They are keys to freedom from the empire. In nature, there is no equality, yet, nature survives in harmony without it. These are all tools of the empire to keep you subjugated and under collectivization. These are not new concepts. We know what happened in the past. And if we have the knowledge, why are we taking the same path if the destination will be the same? And much more.

Introduction by George H. Smith.
Individualism is one of most criticized and least understood ideas in social and political thought. Is individualism the ability to act independently amidst a web of social forces? A vital element of personal liberty and a shield against conformity? Does it lead to or away from unifying individuals with communities?
The Libertarianism.org Readers series provides an introduction to the major ideas and thinkers in the libertarian tradition.

Tibor Richard Machan (/ˈtiːbɔr məˈkæn/; born 18 March 1939) is a Hungarian-American philosopher. A professor emeritus in the department of philosophy at Auburn University, Machan holds the R. C. Hoiles Chair of Business Ethics and Free Enterprise at the Argyros School of Business & Economics at Chapman University in Orange, California.
Though he can be broadly classified as a libertarian on many important issues, Machan rejects any division of libertarianism into left wing and right wing. He holds that, by its nature, libertarianism is about political liberty for all individuals to do whatever is peaceful and non-aggressive. Machan is a minarchist.
Machan was born in Hungary. Machan's father hired a smuggler to get him out of Hungary when he was 14 years of age and he came to the United States three years later.[2] By 1965, Machan graduated Claremont McKenna College (then Claremont Men's College).[3] He took his Masters of Arts in Philosophy at New York University from 1965 to 1966, and his Ph.D in Philosophy at University of California, Santa Barbara, 1966–1971.[4]
In 1970, with Robert W. Poole and Manuel Klausner, he purchased Reason magazine, which has since become the leading libertarian periodical in America. Machan edited Reason for two years and was the editor of Reason Papers, an annual journal of interdisciplinary normative studies, for 25 years.
He was a visiting professor at the United States Military Academy (West Point) in 1992–1993 and has taught at universities in California, New York, Switzerland, and Alabama. He lectures in Europe, South Africa, New Zealand, Budapest, Hungary, Prague, Czech Republic, Azerbaijan, Republic of Georgia, Armenia, and Latin America on business ethics and political philosophy.
He sits on the advisory boards for several foundations and "think tanks," and served on the founding Board of the Jacob J. Javits Graduate Fellowship Program of the U. S. Department of Education. Machan was selected as the 2003 President of the American Society for Value Inquiry, and delivered the presidential address on December 29, 2002, in Philadelphia, at the Eastern Division meetings of the American Philosophical Association, titled "Aristotle & Business." He was on the board of the Association for Private Enterprise Education for several terms.
Machan lives in Silverado Canyon, Orange County, California. Machan is an adviser to Freedom Communications on libertarian issues.[5]
He was previously married to Marty Zupan.[6]
Machan has written a memoir, The Man Without a Hobby: Adventures of a Gregarious Egoist (Hamilton Books, 2004; 2nd edition 2012). He wrote Rebellion in Print: Political Ideas Against the Current (Addleton Academic Publishers) in 2011.
Machan's work usually focuses on ethics and political philosophy, specifically natural rights theory, as in works such as Individuals and Their Rights (Open Court, 1989) and Libertarianism Defended (Ashgate, 2006). He has defended the arguments of Ayn Rand for ethical egoism, and also writes frequently on business ethics, a field in which he deploys a neo-Aristotelian ethical stance whereby commercial and business conduct gain their moral standing by constituting extensions of the virtues of productivity and prudence. He argues that the field presupposes the institution of the right to private property (one cannot trade what one does not own or hasn't been authorized to trade by the owner) in the works, The Business of Commerce, Examining an Honorable Profession, and A Primer on Business Ethics, both with James Chesher, and The Morality of Business, A Profession of Human Wealth Care (Springer, 2007).
His full ethical position is developed in his book Classical Individualism: The Supreme Importance of Each Human Being (Routledge, 1998), and it is applied in, among other books, Generosity: Virtue in Civil Society (Cato Institute, 1998).
Machan also writes in the field of epistemology. His main focus has been to challenge the conception of human knowledge whereby to know that P amounts to having reached a final, perfect, timeless, and finished understanding of P. Instead, Machan develops Ayn Rand's contextual conception of human knowledge (from Rand's Introduction to Objectivist Epistemology), but also draws on the insights of J. L. Austin, from his paper "Other Minds", and Gilbert Harman, from his book Thought, in works such as Objectivity (Ashgate, 2004). Machan has worked on the problem of free will and has defended a secular, naturalist (but not materialist) notion of human initiative in his books The Pseudo-Science of B. F. Skinner (1974; 2007) and Initiative: Human Agency and Society (2000).
