Dozens of people have been injured in northern Kosovo, where police and NATO-led peacekeepers have clashed with ethnic Serbs - the majority in the country's north. Serbs have been trying to block ethnic Albanian officials from entering municipal buildings. The officials were appointed after last month’s local elections, which were boycotted by Serbs and had a turnout of less than 3.5 percent. Demonstrations desceneded into chaos on Monday, with US condemning protesters violence and international calls for de-escalation.
NATO says around 25 peacekeepers have been wounded in unprovoked attacks. The unrest is focused around several towns in the north, including Zveçan. Tensions have been rising since the mayors took office last week.
We talk about the deeply rooted conflict between ethnic Serbs and Kosovo Albanians with Florian Bieber, Professor of Southeast European History and Politics at the University of Graz.

The situation in northern Kosovo remained tense Tuesday as ethnic Serbs continued to gather in front of a town hall in Zvecan after violent clashes with NATO-led peacekeepers left 30 soldiers injured. The NATO-led Kosovo Force (KFOR) soldiers wearing full riot gear have put a metal barrier around the municipal building in Zvecan and are stopping several hundred Serbs from entering. At least two dozen NATO peacekeeping troops have been injured while defending three government buildings from rioting Serbian protesters in northern Kosovo. In the town of Zvecan, police and troops were forced to deploy pepper spray to control crowds after they broke through a security perimeter. Some Serbian protesters retaliated by throwing teargas and stun grenades, while others used spray paint to emblazon the letter "Z", a Russian propaganda symbol, on NATO vehicles.

How Did The Serbian Revolt Against The Ottoman Empire Start?
The Serbian Revolution refers to the national uprising active between 1804 and 1835, during which this territory evolved from an Ottoman province into a constitutional monarchy and a modern Serbia. The first part of the period, from 1804 to 1815, was marked by a violent struggle for independence from the Ottoman Empire with two armed uprisings taking place, ending with a ceasefire. The later period (1815–1835) witnessed a peaceful consolidation of political power of the increasingly autonomous Serbia, culminating in the recognition of the right to hereditary rule by Serbian princes in 1830 and 1833 and the territorial expansion of the young monarchy. The adoption of the first written Constitution in 1835 abolished feudalism and serfdom, and made the country suzerain. The term Serbian revol...

The Treaty of Belgrade
The Treaty of Belgrade (Russian: Белградский мир, Turkish: Belgrad antlaşması, Serbian: Beogradski mir) was the peace treaty signed on September 18, 1739 in Belgrade, Habsburg Kingdom of Serbia (today Republic of Serbia), by the Ottoman Empire on one side and the Habsburg Monarchy on the other.
This treaty ended the hostilities of the two-year Austro-Russian–Turkish War (1735–39), in which the Habsburgs joined Imperial Russia in its fight against the Ottomans. With the Treaty of Belgrade, the Habsburgs ceded the Kingdom of Serbia with Belgrade, the southern part of the Banat of Temeswar and northern Bosnia to the Ottomans, and Oltenia, gained by the Treaty of Passarowitz in 1718, to Wallachia (an Ottoman subject), and set the demarcation line to the rivers Sava and Danube. (EN) Kalemegdan is the core and the oldest section of the urban area of Belgrade and for centuries the city population was concentrated only within the walls of the fortress, thus the history of the fortress, until most recent history, equals the retard the Celtic tribe of Scordisci. The term Serbian revolution was coined by a German academic historiographer, Leopold von Ranke, in his book Die Serbische Revolution, published in 1829. These events marked the foundation of modern Serbia.
The period is further divided as follows: First Serbian Uprising (1804–13), led by Karađorđe Petrović Hadži Prodan's revolt (1814) Second Serbian Uprising (1815) under Miloš Obrenović Official recognition of the Serbian state (1815–1833)
The Proclamation (1809) by Karađorđe in the capital Belgrade probably represented the apex of the first phase. It called for national unity, drawing on Serbian history to demand the freedom of religion and formal, written rule of law, both of which the Ottoman Empire had failed to provide. It also called on Serbs to stop paying taxes to the Porte, deemed unfair as based on religious affiliation. Apart from dispensing with poll tax on non-Muslims (jizya), the revolutionaries also abolished all feudal obligations in 1806, only 15 years after the French revolution, peasant and serf emancipation thus representing a major social break with the past. The rule of Miloš Obrenović consolidated the achievements of the Uprisings, leading to the proclamation of the first constitution in the Balkans and the establishment of the oldest Balkan institution of higher learning still in existence, the Great Academy of Belgrade (1808). In 1830 and again in 1833, Serbia was recognized as an autonomous principality, with hereditary princes paying annual tribute to the Porte. Finally, de facto independence came in 1868, with the withdrawal of Ottoman garrisons from the principality; de jure independence was formally recognized at the Congress of Berlin in 1878.
The Habsburgs occupied the Sanjak of Smederevo (modern central Serbia), ruling it as a crownland, the Kingdom of Serbia (1718–39), until they lost south of Danube (1739). There were large migrational waves from Ottoman areas into Habsburg territory. In 1788, Koča Anđelković led a rebellion against the Ottomans with the aid of Austria and placed central Serbia under the rule of the Habsburgs (see Koča's frontier). The Treaty of Sistova (1791) ended Austrian rule and promised Ottoman reforms. However, by 1799, Janissary corps had returned to the Sanjak and removed Serbian autonomy, drastically increased taxes, and enforced martial law. In 1801, Hadži Mustafa Pasha, the vizier of the Sanjak of Smederevo, was murdered by renegade janissaries (dahia), who took power in the Sanjak and defied the Sultan. The dahia feared that the Sultan would make use of the Serbs to oust them, so they decided to capture and execute Serb dukes and other notables at the main square of Valjevo, in an event known as the slaughter of the Dukes (1804). The executions outraged the Serbian people, and within days, Serb chiefs gathered in Šumadija and proclaimed the uprising, electing Karađorđe Petrović as their leader.
During almost 10 years of the First Serbian Uprising (1804–13), Serbia perceived itself as an independent state for the first time after 300 years of Ottoman and short-lasting Austrian occupations. Encouraged by the Russian Empire, the demands for self-government within Ottoman Empire in 1804 evolved into a war for independence by 1807. Combining patriarchal peasant democracy with modern national goals the Serbian revolution was attracting thousands of volunteers among the Serbs from across the Balkans and Central Europe. The Serbian
Revolution ultimately became a symbol of the nation-building process in the Balkans, provoking peasant unrests among the Christians in both Greece and Bulgaria. Following the successful siege with 25,000 men, on 8 January 1807 the charismatic leader of the revolt Karađorđe Petrović proclaimed Belgrade the capital of Serbia.

The Habsburg withdrawal forced Russia to accept peace at the Russo-Turkish War, 1735-1739 with the Treaty of Niš, whereby it was allowed to build a port at Azov, gaining a foothold on the Black Sea.
The Treaty of Belgrade effectively ended the Kingdom of Serbia which had existed since 1718. This territory would await the next Habsburg-Ottoman war to be temporarily again included into the Habsburg Monarchy in 1788 with the help of Koča Anđelković.

Serbia (Serbian: Србија / Srbija [sř̩bija]), officially the Republic of Serbia (Serbian: Република Србија / Republika Srbija [repǔblika sř̩bija]), is a country situated at the crossroads of Central and Southeast Europe in the southern Pannonian Plain and the central Balkans. The sovereign state borders Hungary to the north, Romania to the northeast, Bulgaria to the southeast, Macedonia to the south, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro to the southwest. The country claims a border with
Albania through the disputed territory of Kosovo. Serbia numbers around 7 million residents. Its capital, Belgrade, ranks among the oldest and largest cities in southeastern Europe.Inhabited since the Paleolithic Age, the Slavic migrations to the Balkans in the 6th century established several sovereign states in the early Middle Ages which at times nominally recognized Byzantine, Frankish and Hungarian overrule. The Serbian Kingdom obtained recognition by the Vatican and Constantinople in 1217, reaching its peak in 1346 as a relatively short-lived Serbian Empire. By the mid-16th century, the entire modern-day Serbia was annexed by the Ottomans, at times interrupted by the Habsburg Empire, which started expanding towards Central Serbia from the end of the 17th century, while maintaining a foothold in modern-day Vojvodina. In the early 19th century, the Serbian Revolution established the nation-state as the region's first constitutional monarchy, which subsequently expanded its territory. Following disastrous casualties in World War I, and the subsequent unification of the former Habsburg crownland of Vojvodina (and other territories) with Serbia, the country co-founded Yugoslavia with other South Slavic peoples, which would exist in various political formations until the Yugoslav Wars of the 1990s. During the breakup of Yugoslavia, Serbia formed a union with Montenegro, which was peacefully dissolved in 2006. In 2008, the parliament of the province of Kosovo unilaterally declared independence, with mixed responses from the international community.
Serbia is a member of the UN, CoE, OSCE, PfP, BSEC, CEFTA and it is acceding to the WTO. Since 2014 the country has been negotiating its EU accession with perspective of joining the European Union by 2025 and is the only country in the current enlargement agenda which is designated as "free" by Freedom House. Since 2007, Serbia formally adheres to the policy of military neutrality. An upper-middle income economy with a dominant service sector followed by the industrial sector and agriculture, the country ranks high by the Human Development Index (66th), Social Pr ...

(EN) Kalemegdan is the core and the oldest section of the urban area of Belgrade and for centuries the city population was concentrated only within the walls of the fortress, thus the history of the fortress, until most recent history, equals the retard the Celtic tribe of Scordisci. The city-fortress was later conquered by the Romans, became known as Singidunum and became a part of "the military frontier", where the Roman Empire bordered "barbaric Central Europe". Singidunum was defended by the Roman legion IV Flaviae which built a fortified camp on a hill at the confluence of the rivers the Danube and the Sava. In the period between AD 378 and 441 the Roman camp was being repeatedly destroyed in the invasions by the Goths and the Huns. The legend says that Attila's grave lies on the confluence of the Sava and the Danube (under the Fortress). In 476 Belgrade again became the borderline between the empires: Western Roman Empire and Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantine Empire), and the Slav- Avar State in the North.
The Byzantine Emperor Justinian I rebuilt the Fortress around 535. In the following centuries a fortress suffered continuous destruction under the Avar sieges. The Slavs (Serbs) and Avars had their "state union" north of Belgrade with the Serbs and other Slavic tribes finally settling in the region of Belgrade as well as the regions west and south of Belgrade in the beginning of the 7th century. The name Belgrade (or Beograd, in Serbian), which, not just in Serbian but in most Slavic languages means a "white town" or a "white fortress", was first mentioned in AD 878. The Fortress kept changing its masters: Hungary, Bulgaria, and then again the Byzantines. The fortress remained a Byzantine stronghold until the 12th century when it fell in the hands of a newly emerging Serbian state. It became a border city of the Serbian Kingdom, later Empire, with Hungary. The Hungarian king Béla I gave the fortress to Serbia in 11th century as a wedding gift (his son married Serbian princess Jelena), but it remained effectively part of Hungary, except for the period 1282-1319. After the Serbian state collapsed after the Battle of Kosovo, Belgrade was chosen in 1404 as the capital of the principality of Despot Stefan Lazarević. Major work was done to the ramparts which were encircling a big thriving town. The lower town at the banks of the Danube was the main urban center with a new build Orthodox cathedral. The upper town with its castle was defending the city from inland. Belgrade remained in Serbian hands for almost a century. After the Despots death in 1427 it had to be returned to Hungary. An attempt of Sultan Mehmed II to conquer the fortress was prevented by Janos Hunyadi in 1456 (Siege of Belgrade). It saved Hungary from an Ottoman invasion for 70 years.
In 1521, 132 years after the Battle of Kosovo, the fortress, like most parts of the Serbian state, was conquered by the Turks and remained (with short periods of the Austrian and Serbian occupation), under the rule of the Ottoman Empire until the year 1867 when the Turks withdrew from Belgrade and Serbia. During the period of short Austrian rule (1718 -1738) the fortress was largely rebuilt and modernized. It witnessed two Serbian Uprisings in the 19th century, the Great Serbian Migration in the 17th century, the Dark Ages of the Turkish Period. The fortress suffered further damages during the First and the Second world wars. After almost two millennia of continuous sieges, battles and conquests the fortress is today known as the Kalemegdan fortress. The name Kalemegdan derives from two Turkish words, kale (fortress) and megdan (battleground) (literally, "battlefield fortress").

SUMMARY
=======
The Ottoman–Habsburg wars were fought from the 16th through the 18th centuries between the Ottoman Empire and the Habsburg (later Austrian) Empire, which was at times supported by the Holy Roman Empire, Kingdom of Hungary, Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, and Habsburg Spain. The wars were dominated by land campaigns in Hungary (including Transylvania (today in Romania) and Vojvodina (today in Serbia), Croatia and central Serbia.
By the 16th century, the Ottomans had become a serious threat to the European powers, with Ottoman ships sweeping away Venetian possessions in the Aegean and Ionian seas and Ottoman-supported Barbary pirates seizing Spanish possessions in the Maghreb. The Protestant Reformation, the French–Habsburg rivalry and the numerous civil conflicts of the Holy Roman Empire served as distractions to the Christians from their conflict with the Ottomans. Meanwhile, the Ottomans had to contend with the Persian Safavid Empire and to a lesser extent the Mamluk Sultanate, which was defeated and fully incorporated into the empire.
Initially, Ottoman conquests in Europe made significant gains with a decisive victory at Mohács reducing around one third (central) part of Kingdom of Hungary to the status of an Ottoman tributary. Later, the Peace of Westphalia and the Spanish War of Succession in the 17th and 18th centuries respectively left the Austrian Empire as the sole firm possession of the House of Habsburg. Following the Siege of Vienna in 1683 the Habsburgs were able to assemble a large coalition of European powers known as the Holy League, allowing them to effectively combat the Ottomans and to regain control over Hungary. The Great Turkish War ended with the decisive Holy League victory at Zenta. The wars came to an end following Austria's participation in the war of 1787-1791, which Austria fought in alliance with Russia. Intermittent tension between Austria and the Ottoman Empire continued throughout the nineteenth century, but they never again fought each other in a war and ultimately found themselves allied in World War I, in the aftermath of which both empires were dissolved.
Historians have devoted most of their attention to the second siege of Vienna of 1683, depicting it as a decisive Austrian victory that saved Western civilization and began the fall of the Ottoman Empire. However more recently historians have taken a broader perspective noting that the Habsburgs at the same time resisted internal separatist movements, and were battling Prussia and France for control of central Europe. The key advance made by the Europeans was an effective combined arms doctrine in which the infantry and artillery, supported by the cavalry, cooperated together to be triply effective. Nevertheless, the Ottomans were able to maintain military parity with the Habsburgs until the middle of the eighteenth century. Historian Gunther E. Rothenberg has emphasized the non-combat dimension of the conflict, whereby the Habsburgs built up military communities that protected their borders and produced a steady flow of well-trained, motivated soldiers.

Serbian Collaboration during World War II
Serbia in World War II. After the Axis invasion of Yugoslavia the Balkan nation was carved up. German-occupied Serbia was officially known as the Territory of the Military Commander in Serbia (or: the Serbian Residual State). The collaborationist government was led by Milan Nedić and became known as the Government of National Salvation (Nedić's government). Different pro-Axis Serbian formations saw the light of day such as: the Serbian State Guard, the Serbian Volunteer Command and the Russian Defence Corps (Russian Protective Corps).

Fears of new conflict as Bosnia-Herzegovina faces growing Serb nationalism - BBC News
The peace agreement that holds together Bosnia-Herzegovina is under threat from a rise in Serb nationalism.
More than three years of war in the 1990s devastated Bosnia after the fall of Yugoslavia. Tens of thousands of people were killed and hundreds of thousands were driven from their homes by ethnic cleansing.
The war ended in 1995 with a peace treaty that split the country into two parts: a Bosniak Muslim and Croat federation - and the other a Serb entity called Republika Srpska.
Now an ongoing political crisis and the resurgence of Serb nationalism under Bosnian Serb leader Milorad Dodic, is stirring up fears of renewed conflict.
Huw Edwards presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Jeremy Bowen.

From Wikipedia
The Crveni Krst concentration camp (lit. Red Cross concentration camp), located in Crveni Krst, Niš, was operated by the German Gestapo and used to hold captured Serbs, Jews and Romanis during the Second World War. Established in mid-1941, it was used to detain as many as 35,000 people during the war and was liberated by the Yugoslav Partisans in 1944. More than 10,000 people are thought to have been killed at the camp. After the war, a memorial to the victims of the camp was erected on Mount Bubanj, where many inmates were shot. A memorial museum was opened on the former campgrounds in 1967 and in 1979 the campgrounds were declared a Cultural Monument of Exceptional Importance and ...

(6 Feb 1996) English/Nat
The Bosnian government has arrested at least seven Serbian army officials for alleged war crimes.
The arrested men reportedly include a close associate of Serb military commander General Ratko Mladic.
The Bosnian government says it will abide by any decision the International War Crimes Tribunal makes on whether the Serb military men should be released or not.
The arrests of the men from the Serbian army occurred in Dobrinje, part of Sarajevo, in Bosnia.
This used to be a frontline area during the war and tensions still exist although there is now meant to be freedom of movement.
One of those arrested is General Djrdje Djukic, rumoured to be a close associate of Serb military commander General Ratko Mladic.
The men were thought to have been t...

BOSNIA: CAPTURED SOLDIERS PARADED BY SERB PARAMILITARY LEADER
(30 Sep 1995) Serbian/Nat
The notorious Serb paramilitary leader, Zeljko Raznatovic, known as Arkan, paraded Bosnian government soldiers captured by his men during recent fighting on Friday.
As Arkan humiliated the cowering captives, some of his 'Tiger' militiamen claimed to have taken back territory from government troops 40 kilometres south of the Serb stronghold of Banja Luka.
Bullying was the name of Arkan's game.
UPSOUND:
Arkan: "Tell them who captured you."
POWs: "Arkan's men"
Arkan: "Sure, where do you think you are? How many killed?"
POWs: "More than 100."
Arkan was obviously proud of the capture of these Bosnian government soldiers and milked them for every bit of grim amusement he could.
UPSOUND:
Arkan: "Smile for the cameras. I promise to take you for ...

A Serb Commander has met with U-S General Nash of I-FOR in the controversial Posavina corridor to discuss the NATO-led mission's role in the area.

Crisis, conflict and war - How NATO is preparing to resist | DW Documentary
NATO members are viewing Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine with grave concern, especially those on the alliance’s eastern flank. They’re joining forces with German troops right on the Russian border.
Germany is the leading or "framework nation” in what is called the NATO Battle Group Lithuania. With its alliance partners, German forces are serving "on the front line” - right on the Russian border. They’re guarding NATO’s northeast flank against any possible incursion and ensuring the Baltic states are supported during times of crisis and, if necessary, conflict.
In the spring of 2023, Germany’s military is in Rukla and Pabrade, among other places, for maneuvers. There it is practicing with NATO partners from Croatia, the Czechia and the Netherlands to handle a Russian attack on...

History of Serbia
The history of Serbia covers the historical development of Serbia and of its predecessor states, from the Early Stone Age to the present state, as well as that of the Serbian people and of the areas they ruled historically. The scope of Serbian habitation and rule has varied much through the ages, and, as a result, the history of Serbia is similarly elastic in what it includes.
Slavs settled the Balkans in the 6th and 7th centuries, out of which settlement the First Serbian Principality of the Vlastimirovići emerged. It evolved into a Grand Principality by the 11th century, and in 1217 the Kingdom and national church were established, under the Nemanjići. In 1345 the Serbian Empire was established: it spanned a large part of the Balkans. In 1540 the Ottoman Empire annexed Serbia.

2. SOUNDBITE: (English) Condoleezza Rice, US Secretary of State:
"And we look forward to that continuing transformation that allows Serbia and the Balkans to find complete peace and stability. We are going to sign now a "Status of Forces" agreement. It is only fitting because Serbia and the United States have enjoyed good cooperation, and I look forward to the deepening of our defence relationship and indeed, the deepening of our friendship."
3. SOUNDBITE: (English) Boris Tadic, President, Republic of Serbia:
"Without cooperation in the defence sector, we're not going to have cooperation in the economy on the high level, and for that reason I'm expecting that in the future we'll have more investment from the United States, United States companies in Serbia than today."

STORYLINE:
Serbian President Boris Tadic held talks with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in Washington on Thursday, and afterwards signed a mutual defence Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA).
"I look forward to the deepening of our defence relationship and indeed, the deepening of our friendship," Rice said.
"Without cooperation in the defence sector, we're not going to have cooperation in the economy on the high level," Tadic said.
SOFA defines the legal status of U.S. army personnel and property while on Serbian territory.
The U.S. has some 100 such agreements with various nations, and Serbia and Belarus have been the only European countries without
them.
Tadic said he expected more investment in Serbia by US companies as a result in increased defence cooperation between the two nations.
As the U.N.-mediated talks on Kosovo's future status enter a crucial phase, Tadic has said he would urge U.S. officials to support Belgrade's position that the province should have broad autonomy but remain within Serb territory.
The U.S. is part of a six-nation group helping to negotiate a resolution on Kosovo's status by the end of the year.
Tadic has said Serbia was striving to build closer ties with the "most powerful country" and to purge the "destructive image" left by late autocratic ruler Slobodan Milosevic.
Earlier this year, the EU suspended pre-membership talks with Serbia because it failed to meet a deadline for capturing Ratko Mladic, one of the
court's most wanted suspects.
Mladic, who was the Bosnian Serb military commander during the 1992-95 war in Bosnia, is charged with genocide for the slaughter of as many as 8,000 Muslims in Srebrenica.
The former general is believed to be hiding in Serbia under the protection of hardliners in the military.
Tadic's visit is also to include a stop in the U.S. state of Ohio to discuss Serbia's military cooperation with the U.S. National Guard.

Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic has announced his army will launch a counter-offensive which he claimed would finally defeat the Muslim side.
Karadzic also warned the international community to stop supporting the Muslims, or the war would continue indefinitely.
The Bosnian Serb leader was speaking while visiting troops on the frontline with his military commander, General Ratko Mladic.
Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic Monday visited his army on the Vlasic frontline in central Bosnia along with General Ratko Mladic.
General Mormirtalic Talic, commander of the 1st Krajina Corps, saluted him on his arrival and gave him a report on the Vlasic region.
Karadzic had just come from a session of the self-proclaimed Bosnian Serb parliament, which was held behind closed doors and ended after 26 hours at dawn on Monday.
In a show of unity, Karadzic inspected the troops with the Bosnian Serb army commander.
Photographs were on display in a tribute to soldiers killed in the war.
The Bosnian Serb leadership has been in disarray after recent Bosnian government military successes.
But Karadzic said the military campaign was going well and announced the army would launch a counter-offensive to finally defeat the Muslim enemies.
SOUNDBITE:
"Well more or less okay. The Muslims had some initial successes, very small successes. We had too many casualties, but we are handling the situation and it is going to be very, very good"

The Bosnian Serb army commander said his troops would make a comeback.
SOUNDBITE: (In Serbo-Croat)
"The Muslims have violated the agreement on the cessation of hostilities, they have some minor successes in this area, but we will take back the lost territories."
SUPER CAPTION: General Ratko Mladic - Bosnian Serb military commander
Karadzic warned the international community to stop continuing to support the Muslim side.
SOUNDBITE:
"Yes we are handling the.. situation also. What I would like to say is if Muslims want a military outcome then it's going to be military outcome, and there will not be any concession concerning territory. If they wanted political outcome then we have been ready to negotiate, but if they want to fight to the end then it's going to be fight to the end of the Muslim army. We warn the international community to stop supporting Muslim side because this is the way to prolong this war"

As the fighting continues around Mount Vlasic, France Tuesday demanded an urgent meeting of the U-N Security Council and other steps to improve security for peacekeepers in the former Yugoslavia.
The move follows the killing of two more French peacekeepers in Sarajevo last week.

A memorial museum was opened on the former campgrounds in 1967 and in 1979 the campgrounds were declared a Cultural Monument of Exceptional Importance and came under the protection of the Socialist Republic of Serbia.
On 6 April 1941, Axis forces invaded the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. By October 1941, this policy had resulted in the deaths of 25,000 Serbs.[8] The Germans also targeted Jews, who were subjected to forced labour, punitive taxing, and restrictive decrees.[9] Jews were also registered with German authorities and forced to wear identifying armbands while Jewish property was confiscated.[10] They, and to a lesser degree Romanis, were targeted on racial grounds, although most were not killed outright. Following the start of the anti-German uprising, German propaganda began associating Jews with Communism and anti-German ideology. Executions and arrests of Serbian Jews followed.[9]
When the Germans occupied southeastern Serbian city of Niš in April 1941, they prohibited Romanis from leaving their homes without an identifying yellow armband bearing the word Zigeuner (Gypsy). German soldiers then went through the Romani quarter and forcibly shaved the heads of all Romanis in Niš under the pretext that they had lice.[11]
The Crveni Krst (Red Cross) concentration camp was established by the German Gestapo in Niš in mid-1941.[12] It was named after a Red Cross facility located near the campgrounds.[13] Originally intended as a transit camp (German: Durchgangslager), by September of that year it was transformed into a concentration camp.[14]
There were four categories of prisoners. First categories were hostages. They served for retaliation execution. For one killed occupying soldier 100, and for one wounded 50 hostages were killed. Second category were Jews. Third category of prisoners were persons arrested on suspicion of belonging or cooperating with the communist National Liberation Movement and their military units under Josip Broz Tito. The fourth category of prisoners consisted of those arrested on charge of belonging or cooperating with the Yugoslav Army in the Homeland, under the command of War Minister, Colonel Dragoljub Draže Mihailović.[15]
Romani men, women and children were imprisoned at Crveni Krst shortly after its creation.[16] In October 1941, 200–300 local and foreign Jews living in Niš were brought to the camp. More arrived later from towns in the Serbian interior.[12] Laws passed by the Germans that September ensured that they would be detained separately from other inmates.[14] The Germans began executing adult male inmates in early November.[12] In January, a group of Serbian Partisans attacked the camp, freeing a small number of Jewish prisoners.

A memorial museum was opened on the former campgrounds in 1967 and in 1979 the campgrounds were declared a Cultural Monument of Exceptional Importance and came under the protection of the Socialist Republic of Serbia.

The men were thought to have been travelling to Ilidza, a suburb of Sarajevo for a meeting late at night.
But details of their arrest have only emerged over the last 24 hours.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"Lieutenant General Sir Michael Walker the commander of the ARRC (Allied Rapid Reaction Corps) held a joint military commission with the leaders of the three armies yesterday afternoon at which it was reported to him that various members of the VRS, the Serb army, had been detained by the Muslim government authorities."
"He was told that indeed General Djukic, his chief of staff driver and five others had all been detained during the last few days and were being held as war criminals. We understand that the International Tribunal will look into it this morning. We further understand that if the charges are unfounded that they will release the men but is now a matter for the International Tribunal to take forward."
SUPER CAPTION: Lt Col Mark Rayner, ARRC Spokesman
All the men are thought to be held in a Sarajevo prison although the Bosnian government have not confirmed this.
But the government has promised total co-operation with the tribunal who are leading the investigation into those accused of committing war crimes.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"I understand there is evidence against these two individuals of being involved in war crimes activities on the territory of Bosnia-Herzegovina but that is to be determined by a representative of the Hague court. What we can say is we will give all the evidence we have and we will respect any decision made by a representative of the court on the war crimes in former Yugoslavia."
SUPER CAPTION: Mirza Hajric, Bosnian Spokesman
These arrests could mean more tension in Sarajevo, which is already jittery over the preparations to reunify the capital under Bosnian government rule next month.

I promise to take you for a drink in hotel 'Bosnia' in Banja Luka. Smile, don't be sad. We'll act according to Geneva convention. Tell us your names."
1.POW: Zaim Smaic from Kljuc, 17.brigade from Central Bosnia.
2.POW: Ismet Svraka from Prijedor, 17. brigade.
3.POW: Esad Agicic from Banja Luka, 17. brigade.
4.POW: Dzemal Uzairovic from Bosanski Novi, 17. brigade."
The Serb nationalist paramilitary warlord gained a grim reputation earlier in the Bosnian war for cruelty to his Moslem captives.
These Serb soldiers are on Mount Manjaca, a key line of defence for the Serb stronghold of Banja Luka , 40 kilometres to the north.
On Friday a special contingent of Bosnian Serb troops claimed to be taking territory back from the mainly Moslem government troops.
With the soldiers were special police troops, and paramilitary units from Serbia - Arkan's 'Tigers' militia.
Together they launched 120 millimeter mortar grenades into the sky - hoping to send the Muslims on the run again.

------
Description: Dimitrije Ljotić was a Serbian far-right politician and ideologue who established the Yugoslav National Movement in 1935 and collaborated with German occupational authorities in the Territory of the Military Commander in Serbia during World War II. He joined the Serbian Army with the outbreak of the Balkan Wars, fought on the Serbian side during World War I and remained in active service until 1920, when he decided to pursue a career in politics. He joined the People's Radical Party that year and became regional deputy for the Smederevo District in 1930. In 1931, he was appointed to the position of Yugoslav Minister of Justice by King Alexander I but resigned following a disagreement between him and the king over the layout of the Yugoslav political system. Ljotić founded Zbor in 1935. The party received little support from the largely anti-German Serbian public and never won more than 1 percent of the vote in the 1935 and 1938 Yugoslav parliamentary elections. Ljotić was arrested in the run-up to the latter elections and briefly sent to an insane asylum after the authorities accused him of having a "religious mania". He voiced his opposition to the Cvetković–Maček Agreement in 1939 and his supporters reacted to it violently. Zbor was soon outlawed by the Yugoslav government, forcing Ljotić into hiding. He remained in hiding until April 1941, when the Axis powers invaded Yugoslavia. Ljotić was later invited by the Germans to join the Serbian puppet government of Milan Aćimović and was offered the position of economic commissioner. He never took office, partly because he disliked the idea of playing a secondary role in the administration and partly because of his unpopularity. He resorted to indirectly exerting his influence over the Serbian puppet government through two of his closest associates whom the Germans had selected as commissioners. In September 1941, the Germans gave Ljotić permission to form the Serbian Volunteer Detachments, which were later renamed the Serbian Volunteer Corps . Ljotić was publicly denounced as a traitor by the Yugoslav government-in-exile and Chetnik leader Draža Mihailović in July 1942. He and other Serbian collaborationist officials left Belgrade in October 1944 and made their way to Slovenia, from where they intended to launch an assault against the Independent State of Croatia . Between March and April, Ljotić and Mihailović agreed to a last-ditch alliance against the Communist-led Yugoslav Partisans and their forces came together under the command of Chetnik General Miodrag Damjanović on 27 March. Ljotić was killed in an automobile accident on 23 April and was buried in Šempeter pri Gorici. His funeral service was jointly conducted by Bishop Nikolaj Velimirović and Serbian Orthodox Patriarch Gavrilo Dožić, whose release from the Dachau concentration camp Ljotić had secured the previous December. In early May, Damjanović led the SDK–Chetnik formations under his command into northwestern Italy, where they surrendered to the British and were placed in detainment camps. Many were later extradited to Yugoslavia, where several thousand were executed by the Partisans and buried in mass graves in the Kočevski Rog plateau. Others immigrated to the west, where they established émigré organizations intended to promote Zbor's political agenda. The antagonism between these groups and those affiliated with the Chetniks continued in exile.

There it is practicing with NATO partners from Croatia, the Czechia and the Netherlands to handle a Russian attack on the Baltic states. In full agreement with the NATO motto "train as you fight,” practice and training are closely-oriented to a genuine threat. The leader of the German contingent, Colonel Wolfgang Schmidt, points out the special historic significance and perceived peril in the Baltic. He says, "From historical experience, of course the perception of possible aggression - be it Russian or Belarusian - is far more intense here than in the Federal Republic of Germany.” He adds that not everyone has grasped the defense of "all that we stand for - modernity, freedom of opinion and speech and everything we describe as Western values begins here.” For a year, Schmidt says, the Ukraine has been fighting far more than their Russian attackers - they’re defending "our freedom,” too.
This report follows a major exercise called "Griffin Lightning.” A platoon commander with the Dutch Armed Forces emphasizes the importance of maneuvers and cooperation among the multinational forces. First Lieutenant Bent S. says, "We’re taking part in different exercises. Last week we were with the Norwegians. In a few weeks, the whole Battle Group will come together and we’ll train again with the Norwegians, Germans, Czechs and Croats.
Nobody wants war, but if it really comes to it, we’ll be ready.”
This documentary provides an exclusive look at NATO maneuvers in Lithuania, which are unfolding closer than ever before to a genuine military threat.

The Serbian realms disappeared by the mid-16th century, torn by domestic feuds and overcome by Ottoman conquest. The success of the Serbian revolution against Ottoman rule in 1817 marked the birth of the Principality of Serbia, which achieved de facto independence in 1867 and finally gained recognition by the Great Powers in the Berlin Congress of 1878. As a victor in the Balkan Wars of 1912–1913, Serbia regained Vardar Macedonia, Kosovo and Raška . In late 1918 the region of Vojvodina proclaimed its secession from Austria-Hungary to unite with the pan-Slavic State of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs; the Kingdom of Serbia joined the union on 1 December 1918, and the country was named the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes.
