Opposition lawmakers in Kosovo disrupted a parliamentary session, using tear gas and whistles to protest over the government's recent EU-sponsored deal with Serbia, which gave the country's Serb-majority areas greater powers.
The opposition wants the government to backtrack from the deal, saying it endangers Kosovo's territorial integrity. The governing coalition says the opposition wants to come to power through unconstitutional means.
A statement from the government deplored "the violence of a group of the opposition ... from which some lawmakers were injured and asked for medical assistance".

Opposition leader Albin Kurti detonates device before kicking it around chamber amid rift over deal to strenghten ties with Serbia.
An opposition politician in Kosovo has set off what appeared to be a smoke bomb in parliament, amid a deepening standoff over an EU-brokered deal to improve ties between Serbia and its former southern province.
Albin Kurti, leader of the Self-Determination party, triggered the device before kicking it around the chamber to spread the smoke. There was no immediate confirmation from police of what device was used. Self-Determination described it as a gas canister.
Kurti, a former student protest leader against Serbian rule in the 1990s, is leading opposition to a slow-moving rapprochement between Pristina and Belgrade, mediated by the EU as a way to cement stability in the former Yugoslavia.
Nato went to war with 78 days of airstrikes in 1999 to halt the killing and expulsion of ethnic Albanian civilians in Kosovo by Serbian forces trying to crush a two-year guerrilla insurgency.
In 2008, Kosovo declared independence and has been recognised by more than 100 countries. Serbia and its powerful ally Russia are blocking its accession to the UN.
Kurti and his followers are angry at the Kosovo government’s acquiescence to a deal creating an “association” of municipalities where minority Serbs live, saying this represents a creeping return to rule from Belgrade.
“No one has the mandate nor the right to bring Serbia back into Kosovo,” an opposition bloc which Kurti is part of said in a statement. “We will not let this happen.”

MPs launch tear gas canisters and blow whistles in chaotic scenes in Kosovo parliament amid backlash over deal giving Serbs greater powers
Several politicians were injured when opposition MPs launched tear gas
Protesting politicians are trying to stonewall a new deal with Serbia
The EU-sponsored deal would give Serb-majority regions greater powers
Ruling coalition denounced the 'violence' and pleaded for civilised debate
Chaotic scenes erupted in the Kosovo parliament today when opposition MPs used tear gas and whistles to disrupt the government's latest deal with Serbia.
Several politicians were injured in the violence, sparked by an EU-sponsored deal which will give the country's Serb-majority areas greater powers.
The opposition wants the government to backtrack from the deal, saying it endangers Kosovo's territorial integrity.
The ruling coalition condemned the act of protest, claiming several politicians were injured and needed medical assistance
The governing coalition accuses the opposition of trying to rise to power through unconstitutional means.
A statement from the government deplored 'the violence of a group of the opposition... from which some lawmakers were injured and asked for medical assistance.'
Kosovo's President Atifete Jahjaga denounced the 'nasty actions of the opposition's lawmakers'.
She said: 'Conceptual and political disagreements should be debated with the power of argument and parliamentary culture.'
Despite the tear gas, Parliament Speaker Kadri Veseli continued the session, inviting the opposition to take part in the debate on the deals with Serbia to 'together express our reservations, or displeasure, or support for the Brussels agreement.'
He added: 'What is happening is not patriotism and it is not helping Kosovo.'
Opposition lawmaker Glauk Konjufca of the Vetevendosje (Self-Determination) Party said the protests at the weekly sessions on Thursdays would continue. This was the third straight disturbance.
'[We are] blocking parliamentary life in Kosovo to reject what the government signed and we ask the government to withdraw its signature from the recent agreements with Serbia, especially this about the establishment of the Serbian association of municipalities,' he said.
Opposition MPs vowed to continue the disruptions every Thursday after today's event marks the third disturbance in the past three weeks
The U.S. Embassy said some of its staff members in Pristina were among those injured in the disturbance, which it said made 'a mockery of one of Kosovo's most important democratic institutions.'
Prime Minister Isa Mustafa escaped untouched when eggs were thrown on a street earlier this week.
He was the target of more eggs hurled by opposition lawmakers last month when he was escorted out of Parliament, assisted by bodyguards protecting him with an umbrella.
Serbia rejects Kosovo's 2008 secession, already recognized by more than 100 countries.
Mustafa's Democratic Party and his deputy and Foreign Minister Hashim Thaci's Democratic League of Kosovo hold 68 of the 120 parliamentary seats.

Clouds of tear gas filled Kosovo's parliament in Pristina during a protest by opposition deputies who smuggled gas canisters past security guards and into the chamber. It was the second time in two weeks that opposition lawmakers released tear gas to disrupt a parliamentary session. Outside the parliament building on October 15, protesters rallied to support the opposition leaders. The repeated protests are a response to a landmark deal, brokered by the European Union, to normalize relations between Kosovo and Serbia. Opposition supporters believe the move will increase Serbia's power in Kosovo and deepen ethnic divides.

When voting down a bill isn′t seen as an option, lawmakers have been known to fight and resort to other tactics.
And in the case of the opposition in Kosovo′s parliament, teargas was the choice today to disrupt discussion of a bill.
This was the second time the opposition has gassed the chamber in a week in protest of a European Union-brokered deal with Serbia.
The accord would grant ethnic Serb areas of Kosovo greater local powers and possible funding from Serbia′s capital, Belgrade.
Opposition lawmakers say the proposal threatens Kosovo′s independence, which it gained from Serbia in 2008 with the support of the West.
A bloc of opposition parties say they′ll continue to disrupt parliament′s work until the proposal is dropped from the agenda.
And that′s a glimpse of the world today. Have a great night.

Kosovo Travel Video - Everyone loves a newborn, and since 2008, when Kosovo declared independence, large letters spelling NEWBORN have graced a section of pavement in Pristina. The location, between the secure offices of the UN and a shopping mall featuring ubiquitous European clothing stores and a skyclawing crumbling concrete monument, tells it all. Kosovo is finding its feet. Staff from international organisations glam up Pristinas restaurants, cafes and bars, as do talented Kosovars who are taking their seats for the ride forward.
Barbs of its past are impossible to miss: roads are dotted with memorials featuring etchings of those killed in 1999. Kosovos modern architectural standouts may stand out for all the wrong reasons, but what the rebuilt country lacks in style, it makes up for with its mountain-backed towns, hiking opportunities and 13th-century Serbian monasteries, all no more than a couple of hours drive from its capital.

The Republic of Kosovo is situated in southeastern Europe. It is a self-declared independent state and has de facto control over most of the territory, while North Kosovo, the largest Kosovo Serb enclave, is under the control of institutions of the Republic of Serbia. The long-term severe ethnic tensions between Kosovo's ethnic Albanian and Serb populations are still the number one issue in the region and who knows when will be settled?

Kosovo has signed a trade and investment pact with the EU, which is the first step on Pristina’s long road to possible full membership of the bloc.
The agreement aims to boost competition and make it easier for companies there to export to the EU.
Kosovo hopes economic growth will tempt back those who left the country to seek new lives elsewhere.
“Up to January this year, there was a significant number of Kosovars who migrated to the EU, especially to Germany. But we manage to stop this flux of migrants abroad and we have reintegrated about 20.000. We have also committed ourselves to reintegrate all those who come back,” said Isa Mustafa, Kosovo’s prime minister.
However, some are angry with the government over a recent agreement with Serbia to give more powers to Serb-dominated areas in Kosovo.
Protesters clashed with police on Saturday, one day after opposition lawmakers fired tear gas inside the parliament in protest at the deal.
Kosovo announced independence from Serbia in 2008.
Belgrade refuses to recognise it as a sovereign state.

Ten years later, the former Serbian province remains impoverished, ethnically fractured, and dependent on the international community. What does it mean to live in perpetual frozen conflict, a purgatory forgotten by the rest of the world?
This documentary profiles the lives of five Kosovo Serbs and six Kosovo Albanians before and after the declaration of independence in 2007, exploring the segregated education systems, entrenched political corruption, the country's refugee centres and ethnic enclaves, and finally, the folly of the United Nations and international community's "nation building" efforts.

We present the first 10 minutes of this CRTN production
Production Date: 2014
“Crypto-Catholicism manifested itself in more or less an outward formula, not of the essence, but just to allay the pressures of sectarian levies, disturbances, violence, etc. Those who switched to Crypto-Catholicism, they still subscribed to Church stipulations, they attended liturgy, but out of sight. They couldn’t show it publicly.” Prof. Jahja Drancoli, Pristina University, Kosovo
The majority of people from the mountainous parts of Kosovo belong to an underground community known as Crypto-Catholics. The Kosovan Albanians call them “ljaramani” or chameleonic. This phenomenon in the Balkans dates back to the 15th century, when this area fell to the Ottoman Empire. Unable to resist the pressure and terror imposed by the Turks, the majority of Kosovan Albanians publicly converted to Islam. However, some of them in the remote mountain villages, in the privacy of their homes, continued to practice the Catholic faith. They never lost hope that one day they would be able to once again publicly cross the Church threshold without fear of reprisals. This is their story.

Najnoviji film produkcije ARHITEL premijerno prikazan
17. oktobra 2014. u Medija centru u Beogradu.
Autori filma su Ivana Lalić Majdak i Miloš Teodorović;

Jeremy Scahill is an Investigative Journalist, Producer and Co-Writer of the Film Dirty Wars: The World Is a Battlefield. Dirty Wars had its world premiere at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival and received rave reviews by the industry press, including this one by Variety, "This jaw-dropping, persuasively researched pic has the power to pry open government lockboxes." Hollywood Reporter wrote, "Its ugly truths may have seen plenty of sunshine (and even admiration) since the killing of Osama bin Laden, but the film's narrative drive offers a compelling package for viewers numbed by one news report after another about civilian deaths and secret hit lists. Its tough investigative tone and surprisingly stylish photography enhance cinematic appeal for a documentary that merits theatrical exposure."Jeremy Scahill is the National Security Correspondent for The Nation magazine and author of the international bestseller Blackwater: The Rise of the World's Most Powerful Mercenary Army, which won the George Polk Book Award. Scahill learned the journalism trade and got his start as a journalist on the independently syndicated daily news show Democracy Now! He has decided "time would be better spent by entering the struggle for justice in this country." In 1998, Scahill traveled to Iraq for Democracy Now! and Pacifica Radio, he reported on the impact of the economic sanctions on Iraq and the "No-Fly Zone" bombings in Northern and Southern Iraq. In 1999, he covered the 78-day NATO bombing of Serbia, reporting live from Belgrade and Kosovo. In 2000, Scahill reported from the Serbian parliament as the government of Slobodan Milosevic was brought down and was outside Milosevic's home the night the former president was arrested. Between 2001-2003, Scahill reported frequently from Baghdad for Democracy Now! and other media outlets, as the Iraq invasion began. Scahill has reported from Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia, Yemen, the former Yugoslavia, post-Katrina Louisiana, and elsewhere across the globe. Scahill is a frequent guest on a wide array of programs, appearing regularly on The Rachel Maddow Show, Real Time with Bill Maher, and Democracy Now! He has also appeared on ABC World News, CBS Evening News, NBC Nightly News, The Daily Show, CNN, The NewsHour, MSNBC, Bill Moyers Journal, and NPR. In addition, Scahill has written for The Times, the Sunday Telegraph, the BBC, The Indypendent, The Los Angeles Times, Z Magazine, Socialist Worker, International Socialist Review, The Progressive, In These Times, and The Guardian. In addition, Scahill has posted material to the websites Alternet and CounterPunch. He has been a vocal critic of private military contractors, particularly Blackwater Worldwide, which is the subject of his book, Blackwater: The Rise of the World's Most Powerful Mercenary Army. The book received numerous accolades, including the Alternet Best Book of the Year Award, a spot on both the Barnes & Noble and Amazon lists of the Best Nonfiction Books of 2007, and notable mention in the New York Times. Scahill's work has sparked several Congressional investigations. In 2010, Scahill testified before the U.S. House Judiciary Committee on the US's shadow wars in Pakistan, Yemen, and elsewhere, in which he stated: As the war rages on in Afghanistan and--despite spin to the contrary--in Iraq as well, US Special Operations Forces and the Central Intelligence Agency are engaged in parallel, covert, shadow wars that are waged in near total darkness and largely away from effective or meaningful Congressional oversight or journalistic scrutiny. The actions and consequences of these wars is seldom discussed in public or investigated by the Congress. The current US strategy can be summed up as follows: We are trying to kill our way to peace. And the killing fields are growing in number.
