English/Nat
After almost a week in position at Pristina airport, Russian K-FOR troops continue to block the road to the landing strip and buildings which NATO had planned to use as a headquarters in the Kosovo capital.
Saturday saw the Russians again refusing NATO soldiers entry to the facility, despite Friday's agreement in Helsinki, in which both Moscow and the allies announced they had solved the dispute.
Russia continued to refuse other K-FOR troops access to Pristina's airport on Saturday despite the agreement brokered between NATO and the Russians on Friday.
British K-FOR troops were patrolling around the airfield making sure the area remained safe.
But the Russians would not let them past the checkpoints on the airport road which have been in place since last weekend.
The British officer in charge of the patrol played down the incident saying that contact between his men and the Russians was cordial, but even so, the road block remained in place.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"Our intentions here obviously are just to cooperate with them. We have just liaised with them as you have just seen, they are very friendly in liaison. We are now going to move our vehicles back further down looking out for protection of this area in all directions, which is our general policy in this area. Okay, there is nothing more to it than that, and we continue to cooperate. We are in the initial stages with Russian K-FOR and they now know that we are approachable in our area and we can continue this cooperation."
SUPER CAPTION: Captain Adam Fartula, British K-FOR
The agreement established that the airport will be under Russian administration but with NATO in charge of air traffic.
In Pristina itself, a NATO spokesman outlined what the Helsinki plan would mean for the airfield.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"The agreement also guarantees a K-FOR-run airfield, managed under the direct supervision of the K-FOR commander and it gives Russia a key role in administering that airfield. The overall management of the airfield and the Kosovar air space will be directed by the director of Kosovo air operations who will work directly for (British) General (Mike) Jackson."
SUPER CAPTION:Lieutenant Colonel Robin Clifford, NATO Spokesman
But it seems that Friday's agreement is taking some time to reach implementation.
NATO said that they expect the plan to be in force by midday on Sunday.

A sniper firing from an apartment block in Pristina has shot and seriously wounded a man driving a car with Serbian licence plates.
The identity of the man has not yet been confirmed.
British paratroopers of the NATO peacekeeping force sealed off the area as the wounded man was carried to an ambulance and rushed to hospital.
The incident occurred as thousands of Serbs from the southern town of Urosevac fled northwards past Pristina and out of Kosovo in the wake of the retreating Yugoslav army.
The British army has already conceded that it will be impossible to disarm everyone in the city, which is awash with guns following 15 months of ethnic warfare.

Two Albanian men have been shot by British troops in Pristina.
Thousands of revellers were on the streets of the Kosovar capital celebrating a nine- year-old declaration of independence.
British troops opened fire when a car drove toward their position and gunfire was heard.
The British soldiers were providing security for about 50 Serbs who had taken shelter in a nearby building.
The Pristina shootings happened while thousands of ethnic Albanians celebrated in the streets of Kosovo's capital, honking horns and waving Albanian and U-S flags.
A total of eight shots were fired.
One of the cars occupants was found dead at the scene, and another died later in hospital.
Two other people were seriously injured.
SOUNDBITE: (Albanian)
" I heard lots of shooting and then about 20 to 30 metres away I saw a man lying on top of a car - I think he was dead. Then I saw three others lying on the street."
SUPERCAPTION: Witness
A KFOR spokesman said an automatic weapon was found in the car.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"During the evening, some local Serb governmental ministers asked for K-FOR protection as they feared that they may be in danger. A K-FOR patrol was dispatched to the temporary Serb executive building. At about half past midnight a car with eight persons riding in and on top drove past the building and automatic gunfire was heard. The K-FOR patrol believed that their lives were in danger and fired eight shots at the vehicle. One person was killed on the spot and three persons very seriously injured. One person died later in hospital. Its good to see that the people in Kosovo now have something to celebrate after such a long period of suffering and we know that celebratory fire is normal in this part of the world. But we would caution against it in times of tension. K-FOR is here to protect the safety of all people in Kosovo, and will do so entirely evenhandedly. Any loss of life is regrettable but I would stress that if any K-FOR soldier feels that his life is in danger, he will respond quickly and robustly. "
SUPERCAPTION: Major Jan Joosten, KFOR spokesman.
The celebration marked the day nine years ago when Kosovo Albanian opposition movements declared independence in the Serbian province, a declaration not recognized by any government.
While the mood was generally celebratory, there were rumblings of unrest.
Some people burned the flags of Serbia and Yugoslavia and others dragged a statue of a Serbian scholar through the streets behind a tractor

Pristina, also spelled Prishtina and Priština (Albanian: Prishtinë or Prishtina, Turkish: Priştine), is the capital and largest city of Kosovo. It is the administrative centre of the homonymous municipality and district.Preliminary results of the 2011 census put the population of Pristina at 198,000. The city has a majority Albanian population, alongside other smaller communities including Bosniaks, Roma and others. It is the administrative, educational, and cultural centre of Kosovo. The city is home to the University of Pristina and is served by the Pristina International Airport.
Early history
Pristina, end of the 19th centuryIn Roman times, a large town called Ulpiana existed 15 kilometers (9.3 mi) to the south of modern-day Pristina. This city was destroyed but was restored by the Emperor Justinian I. Today the town of Lipljan stands on the site of the Roman city, and remains of the old city can still be seen.
After the fall of Rome, Pristina grew from the ruins of the former Roman city. The city was located at a junction of roads leading in all directions throughout the Balkans and it soon rose to become an important trading centre on the main trade routes across south-eastern Europe.
Pristina came to great importance in the medieval Serbian state, and served as the capital of King Milutin (1282--1321) and other Serbian rulers from the Nemanjić and Branković dynasties until the Battle of Kosovo in 1389, when an invading Ottoman army decisively defeated the Balkans coalition army. In the following decades the area gradually came under Ottoman control, with an Ottoman law-court established in 1423. The whole of Serbia was subsequently conquered by the Ottoman Empire in 1459.
Kosovar Government Central Building (Formerly a bank, damaged in the 1999 war, now fully renovated)Pjetër Bogdani, an original writer of early Albanian literature, spent the last three years of his life in Kosovo and from March 1686 he promoted resistance to the armies of the Ottoman Empire. At the same time the Great Serb exodus started; tens of thousands of Kosovo Serb families withdrew from Kosovo to the Habsburg Empire, led by their patriarch Arsenije III Carnojevic and the Habsburg army. The demographic balance slowly shifted in favour of Albanians.
During the Ottoman Empire, Pristina became increasingly Ottoman in character following the conversion to Islam of many of its inhabitants, both Albanians and Slavs.
From the 1870s onwards Albanians in the region formed the League of Prizren to resist Ottoman rule, and a provisional government was formed in 1881. On the other hand Serbia tried to enlist the support of Albanians against the Ottomans but this came to nothing, as Albanian Mujahidin were encouraging a policy akin to ethnic cleansing. This increased the number of Kosovo Serbs emigrating from Kosovo, while for their part, Albanians from Albania migrated from the infertile lands of northern Albania to take advantage of the fertile lands of Kosovo.Wikipedia

Your trip to Moscow, Russia is bound to be a special one. From the multicolored spires of St. Basil’s Cathedral to the sturdy red walls of the Kremlin, there is much to see and do in this stunning city.
Named after the Moskva River—which flows through the city—Moscow has long been at the forefront of the creative world. Tour Moscow to follow in the footsteps of Tolstoy and Chekhov, among others, and join in the sense of pride Russia feels for its literary tradition. Moscow has named a number of its parks and open spaces after its poets and authors, so take a break at the fountain in Pushkin Square, or rest beneath the leafy trees in Gorky Park. When you’ve gotten your fill of literary splendor, head to the Memorial Museum of Cosmonauts, where you can learn about the Soviet Union’s efforts to reach the stars and the epic space race that lasted from 1955 to 1972.
Moscow is a city of creativity and innovation, but is also very much aware of its own history; as such, a haunting part of any Moscow sightseeing is a visit to the Fallen Monument Park. After the fall of the Soviet Union, countless statues and monuments were removed from their pedestals and moved to this park. Over the years, more modern artwork and sculptures have been added, turning the park into a strange, yet peaceful graveyard of former icons.

To see Pristina from street-level is best: start off in the Dardania neighborhood. The city is buzzing with its new found freedom and self identity. You won't find many cities in Europe with such an exciting atmosphere. Pristina really is a city where politics, recent history, ancient history and day-to-day life collide. Where stark communist blocks lie next to striking remnants of its Ottoman past. Beautiful 15th century mosques, hamams, clock towers and bazaars are all here to give you that distinctive eastern feeling. Amongst all this you'll find the hustle and bustle of the city's community life, mostly through the hum of the open-air cafes that flank the streets, particularly in Dardania. Sitting and drinking coffee is a national pastime and you'll be hard pushed to get a better macchiato anywhere in the world. And when they're not feeding their caffeine addictions the locals like nothing better than to hit the bars around Rexhep Luci and Peyton, where musical preferences range from dance and rock to hip-hop and jazz. And throughout the city you'll find fabulous eateries selling everything from local dishes to high-class cuisine, not to mention good quality kebab vendors on every corner.
It might be Europe's newest capital city, but Pristina is already proving itself in the tourism stakes. A city full of bars, restaurants, nightclubs and a café culture to rival any in Europe. If you're heading to Kosovo, Pristina is a great place to start, and the best place to get a feel for this new country's exciting vibe. And what's more, the friendly locals just love visitors, so expect a very warm welcome.

When I think of the many cities in the world I've visited, Prishtina, Kosovo stands out as the most friendly.
From the moment we arrived at Prishtina International Airport, everyone seemed to personally give us their welcome. The people of Kosovo have a tremendous amount of national pride and they are eager to show off their city.
I loved the café culture of Prishtina. In the warmer months, all of the cafes have outdoor seating. People pass the time by drinking cappuccino and discussing the news of the day. It's Europe the way it's supposed to be, maybe how Paris or Rome were in the 1950's.
Prishtina is a very walkable city. When I visited, most of the roads hadn't yet gotten signs. Nevertheless, it was easy to find my way around. Anyone I asked was glad to point me in the right direction.
Although I only speak English, I still made out alright. Most of the young people in Kosovo speak very good English and the older people know enough to help you out.
Each time I visited, we stayed at the Grand Hotel Prishtina. I absolutely loved the authenticity and unique history of the GHP. While the rooms were a bit dated, the service was second to none and the breakfast was amazing.
It's clear that the economy is tough in Kosovo, yet the people are optimistic, helpful, and eternally happy. I loved taking taxi rides in the vintage Mercedes of Prishtina and buying packs of gum from merchants that would set up tables throughout the city.
The ride from the airport to Prishtina center city was always beautiful, filled with lush green fields and farms. While Kosovo has a thriving agricultural economy, investment seems to be pouring into other sectors. The suburbs are dotted with new construction, a testament to Kosovo's rapid economic development.
I can't wait to visit Kosovo again. It's a place that always left me feeling relaxed and rejuvenated. Kosovo's energy and the pride of its people serve as nourishment for the soul. Enjoy your trip to Prishtina, Kosovo!

Reporter Saranda Bujupi from a Kosovarian TV station made a short documentary about our visit to Pristina. We were performing at the "Play for All" festival, which was organized by the creative agency "Gishtat" (which means "Fingers" in Albanian) in partnership with SOS Kinderdorf and the European Commission Liaison Office to Kosovo.
We were absolutely enthralled with the energy and dynamism of the people that we met in Pristina, and have learnt once again that travel broadens the mind and can correct misconceptions one might have about a place or people. We expect to see great things coming from this young and dynamic new country.

What to See & Eat in Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina
http://davidsbeenhere.com In this episode David takes us to the capital city of Bosnia and Herzegovina to discover Sarajevo’s sights, sounds, and tastes. Sarajevo is a bustling capital with several historical, cultural and gastronomic stops to experience.
David starts off in the city center where he meets up with his local guide Raza to begin the tour. The best place to start is the Eternal Flame, located in the city center. It has burned continuously since 1946 except during the Bosnian War 1992-1995. It is on display for everyone to see.
David and Raza then take a walk along Ferhadija, Sarajevo’s main pedestrian street that links the two different parts of the city – the 19th century buildings dating back to the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Medieval district dating back to Ottoman occupation. In the mix there are also several communist-era buildings when Bosnia existed as a republic in the Social Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (Yugoslavia, for short).
At the point when Ferhadija Street meets the Ottoman quarter, there is line on the floor that shows the split. All along Ferhadija Street there are shops, restaurants, cafés, and banks. It is also where the Eternal Flame is located.
Before Raza and David head into Bascarsija (Ottoman district), they make a quick stop at the square of the Sacred Heart Cathedral. In Bascarsija they visit the Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque, which was built 1530. Afterwards, Raza shows David the different ways to drink a traditional Bosnian coffee at a local Kafana. After fueling up, David stops by Sebilj fountain to have a sip of water. Legend has it that anyone who drinks from the fountain will return to Sarajevo, so we’ll see if David makes his way back one day to experience more of what to see and eat in Sarajevo!
Now time for a little souvenir shopping down Coppersmith Street. Raza shows David the most typical gift one could buy here – a copper coffee pot used to serve Bosnian coffee. All this walking around made them work up quite an appetite, so they head to a bakery to try some delicious pies (cheese, spinach, and meat). The pies are baked over a coal oven and are the perfect fast food. They are also very inexpensive.
Next thing David tries is cevapi (pronounced che-vap-ee), which is pretty much the unofficial national dish of the country. Day 2 takes David and Raza to see the city from a magnificent lookout point, Zuta Tabija, or “yellow fortress.” David recommends driving or taking a taxi there because the climb to the top is quite steep. From here you can see the center of the city and the rolling green hills in the background (in case you didn’t know, Bosnia is one of Europe’s most lush and verdant countries).
After quickly seeing Emperor’s Mosque, Raza takes David to see the exact spot where Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife Sophie, were assassinated on June 28, 1914. At the time David visited (2014) it was the 100th year anniversary of their untimely deaths. The assassination triggered the start of the First World War. After revisiting such a pivotal point in European history, David gets curious to see where all the bread he’s been eating comes from so Raza takes him to a nearby bakery, Pekara Alifakovac. They specialize in Somun bread, which is what is served with cevapi. This family-owned bakery churns out hundreds of Somun breads each day, and they have a pick-up window for customers on the go. It’s very hot inside but the experience was well worth it, especially since they allowed David to eat a piece of freshly baked bread.
Last but not least, David heads outside of the city center to visit one of the most culturally significant places in Bosnia, the Sarajevo Tunnel or Tunnel of Hope. Visitors can now see a portion of a tunnel that allowed Bosnians to smuggle in weapons and supplies during the Siege of Sarajevo (May 1992 through November 1995).
And there you have it, a brief intro about what to see and eat in Sarajevo. We hoped you liked it!
