A solar cell (also called photovoltaic cell or photoelectric cell) is a solid state electrical device that converts the energy of light directly into electricity by the photovoltaic effect.
Assemblies of solar cells are used to make solar modules which are used to capture energy from sunlight. When multiple modules are assembled together (such as prior to installation on a pole-mounted tracker system), the resulting integrated group of modules all oriented in one plane is referred to in the solar industry as a solar panel. The electrical energy generated from solar modules, referred to as solar power, is an example of solar energy.
Photovoltaics is the field of technology and research related to the practical application of photovoltaic cells in producing electricity from light, though it is often used specifically to refer to the generation of electricity from sunlight.
Cells are described as photovoltaic cells when the light source is not necessarily sunlight (lamplight, artificial light, etc.). These are used for detecting light or other electromagnetic radiation near the visible range, for example infrared detectors, or measurement of light intensity.

The firm was recently granted a US patent for solar panel technology hidden beneath touch-sensitive surfaces, like those used in a Macbook trackpad, iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch display.
According to the patent filing, the hidden solar panel would recharge the device throughout the day.
Unfortunately, the Apple patent is very vague about the technology – which could provide a welcome battery boost to the firm's slew of power-hungry devices.
Solar cells could also be used in Apple's range of desktop peripherals, including the battery-reliant wireless Magic Mouse, Magic Trackpad and keyboard, the patent reveals.

A new scientific principle has produced record-breaking solar cells. The 28.8 percent single-junction solar efficiency record, by Alta Devices, was achieved by recognizing the importance of extracting luminescent emission. This is exemplified by the mantra: “A great solar cell also needs to be a great LED”. It was essential to remove the original semiconductor substrate, which absorbed luminescence, and to replace it with a high reflectivity mirror. The solar efficiency record crept up as the rear reflectivity behind the photovoltaic film was increased, 96% reflectivity, 97% to 98% luminescent reflectivity; each produced a new world efficiency record.
In thermo-photovoltaics, high energy photons from a thermal source are converted to electricity. The question is what to do about the majority of low energy infrared photons? It was recognized that the semiconductor band-edge itself can provide excellent spectral filtering for thermophotovoltaics, efficiently reflecting the unused infrared radiation back to the heat source. Exactly those low energy photons that fail to produce an electron-hole pair, are the photons that need to be recycled.
Thus the effort to reflect band-edge luminescence in solar cells has serendipitously created the technology to reflect all infrared wavelengths, which can revolutionize thermo-photovoltaics. We have never before had such high rear reflectivity for sub-bandgap radiation, permitting step-function spectral control of the unused infrared photons for the first time. This enables conversion from heat to electricity with greater than 50% efficiency. Such a lightweight "engine" can provide power to electric cars, aerial vehicles, spacecraft, homes, and stationary power plants.

The breakthrough may have far reaching applications, including for public lighting, outdoor signage and mobile power generation.
The scientists are part of a collaboration between research and industry called the Victorian Organic Solar Cell Consortium (VICOSC).
Australian solar power experts making up the Victorian Organic Solar Cell Consortium have developed and begun to market solar cells that are created with a 3D printer.
“The group, consisting of scientists from the CSIRO, the University of Melbourne and Monash University have been working on the technology for over seven years and have figured out a way to cheaply print the panels onto plastic, including smart-phones and laptops, enabling self charging electronics. They are also able to print
directly on to walls and windows using an opaque solar film and claim that they can line a skyscraper with panels, making it totally electrically self sufficient.” said sciencealert.com
“We print them onto plastic in more or less the same way we print our plastic banknotes,” said Fiona Scholes, senior research scientist at CSIRO. “Connecting our solar panels is as simple as connecting a battery. It’s very cheap. The way in which it looks and works is quite different to conventional silicon rooftop solar.”
The next step is to create a solar spray coating to enhance the power of the panel. “We would like to improve the efficiency of solar panels – we need to develop solar inks to generate more energy from sunlight,” said Scholes. “We are confident we can push the technology further in the years to come.”

Cuts in a flexible backing for solar cells allow a flat solar panel to separate into many small cells that can track the sun across the sky. Tracking provides a 20 to 40 percent improvement in the amount of energy captured by the cells.
Unlike conventional, motorized sun-tracking solar panels, these could be lightweight and aerodynamic enough for residential roofs, which make up 80 percent of solar panel installations in the U.S.

ABSTRACT
A new scientific principle has produced record-breaking solar cells. The 28.8 percent single-junction solar efficiency record, by Alta Devices, was achieved by recognizing the importance of extracting luminescent emission. This is exemplified by the mantra: “A great solar cell also needs to be a great LED”. It was essential to remove the original semiconductor substrate, which absorbed luminescence, and to replace it with a high reflectivity mirror. The solar efficiency record crept up as the rear reflectivity behind the photovoltaic film was increased, 96% reflectivity, 97% to 98% luminescent reflectivity; each produced a new world efficiency record.
In thermo-photovoltaics, high energy photons from a thermal source are converted to electricity. The question is what to do about the majority of low energy infrared photons? It was recognized that the semiconductor band-edge itself can provide excellent spectral filtering for thermophotovoltaics, efficiently reflecting the unused infrared radiation back to the heat source. Exactly those low energy photons that fail to produce an electron-hole pair, are the photons that need to be recycled.
Thus the effort to reflect band-edge luminescence in solar cells has serendipitously created the technology to reflect all infrared wavelengths, which can revolutionize thermo-photovoltaics. We have never before had such high rear reflectivity for sub-bandgap radiation, permitting step-function spectral control of the unused infrared photons for the first time. This enables conversion from heat to electricity with greater than 50% efficiency. Such a lightweight "engine" can provide power to electric cars, aerial vehicles, spacecraft, homes, and stationary power plants.

What is Solyndra?
A documentary report all about Solyndra for the blind and visually impaired or for homework/assignment.
Solyndra was a manufacturer of cylindrical panels of copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS) thin film solar cells based in Fremont, California. Although the company was once touted for its unusual technology, plummeting silicon prices led to the company's being unable to compete with conventional solar panels made of crystalline silicon. The company filed for bankruptcy on September 1, 2011.

Margot Krasojevic's new solar-powered sand turbine hotel in the Gobi Desert utilizes desert winds and sun to produce energy and slow down deforestation. Krasojevic's proposal involves building a sort of underground seed vault which would aid germination and harness wind power to produce clean energy. The futuristic structure, which would also provide housing accommodations, would include a rotating cluster of photovoltaic solar cells and holographic filters to reflect light underground to support plant growth and protect against the harsh climate.
Desertification and dust storm has been the topic of research for many years, prompting designers and scientist across the world to try and find a sustainable solution.
