As the last director of excavations, Prof Evgenia Egnini Schneider has completed her 10th year on the field, Polosa has been assigned to the role.
According to Polosa, after 20 years of excavations, history pullulates from beneath every rock and the ancient site illustrates a sort of open air archaeology museum, boosting not only the scientific side but also the touristic side of the historical area. In this regard, the five-km-long ancient Roman road is expected to be cleaned and opened to visitors to ease the access and attract touristic hiking tours to the region.
The works have unearthed an ancient theatre, Agora, Basilica, Temple, Byzantine Palaze, Turkish baths, Necropolls and two seaports.

New excavation works will start at the ancient city of Elaussia Sebaste in the southern province of Mersin, which houses a necropolis, ancient theater and cistern as well as several aqueducts, on Sept. 8.
A total of 45 people will take part in the new excavation on the site, said the head of the excavation, Prof. Annalisa Polosa from Rome’s La Sapienza University.
Polosa said she had taken part in excavations at the site since 2002 and she is happy to be the new head, replacing former chief Prof. Evgenia Egnini Schneider, who had occupied the post for the last 10 years.
“Excavations have been held in the ancient city for the last 20 years. With the existence of highly valuable cultural assets in the site, the whole area is like an open archeology museum. We have unearthed an ancient theater, agora, basilica, temple and Byzantine palace as well as a number of ancient bathrooms and two ports. We believe more will follow,” she said.
She noted a 5 km-long ancient Roman road, which goes through the Ayaş neighborhood to the Korykos Castle, will be opened.
Polosa noted that the new excavation will be completed on Oct. 20.

Ancient storage containers, known as “pithos,” have been unearthed during excavations in the Çavuştepe Castle in the eastern province of Van.
Cereals, butter and wine were kept in the containers, which date back to 2,800 years ago.
Located in the Gülpınar district, 20 kilometers away from the city center, the castle was built in the heyday of the Urartian Kingdom by the Urartian King Sardur II.
The walls of the castle have survived, together with its cisterns and pioneer sewer systems, temples and palace structures. It is one of the most popular places in the province for tourists.
Excavations in the castle have been headed by Yüzüncü Yıl University Archaeology Department Professor Rafet Çavuşoğlu.
Çavuşoğlu said that after a 30-year hiatus, archaeological work restarted on the castle in 2014.
Istanbul University carried out excavations on the castle between 1961 and 1964, he said, adding that most of the unearthed artifacts had received damage and melted because of wind, rain and snow. “In the first stage, we aim to protect these artifacts,” he said.
He said this year’s excavations aimed at cleaning the southern and northern corridors and storages. “We plastered the adobe walls of the Irmusini Temple in the castle and the corridor with mud. The aim of this work is to prevent the melting of the adobe walls of the conserved places. Our work for conservation will continue in the next years, too.”
Çavuşoğlu said the Urartians had progressed in all fields despite the difficulties of their era.
“The Çavuştepe Castle, built by the Urartian King Sardur II provides us important information about the past. During this year’s work, we unearthed the sections that served as storage buildings. In the storages, that are made up of two parts and were reinforced after fires, we have found 120 pithos containers, where cereals, sesame oil, wine and other food were kept. The containers had a capacity of 36 tons of products. Each pithos has a capacity of 300 kilograms. Buried underground, the pithos storages has units of measure written in cuneiform. Cereals obtained from the Gürpınar Plain were kept there. They were used as granaries and met the needs of the people living there. The Urartian kept all of their supplies there to meet the needs of officials in the palace,” he said.
Wine sinks
Çavuşoğlu said the Çavuştepe Castle was one of the most interesting artifacts reflecting the social life of the Urartians and that they had also found sinks where grapes were turned into wine.
He said the Urartians built a canal to provide water for the castle. “This information is written on inscriptions in the castle. The water was used for grapes and wine produced from these grapes was kept in pithos.”
Çavuşoğlu said four types of stones were skillfully used in the castle, adding that the travertines that were used on the castle walls were brought from stone pits in Edremit district.

Foreign and domestic tourists are continuing to flock to the famed “Underground City” claimed to be around 3,000 years old in the southeastern province of Bayburt. The ancient figures on the walls, in particular, draw great attention from visitors.
The underground city was brought to light in 1988 during construction work in the Aydıntepe district, 25 kilometers outside of Bayburt.
The district mayor and museum directorate decided to extend the visitor path to 850 meters after excavations in 2008.
In the first eight months of 2015, around 25,000 foreign and domestic tourists visited the city.
The work at the underground site has not involved any building materials and the city was engraved in a single section of bedrock consisting of tuff, some 2.5 meters under the ground.
The underground city consists of rooms, large areas, corridors, ventilating slits and lamp holes in conic shapes, along with a castle and galleries with vaulted covers.
The archaeological works have unearthed 4,000-year-old tombs and 3,000-year-old wall figures, showing how ancient the settlement is.
The underground city is thought to have been used by Christians, particularly for sheltering from danger, with a number of rooms, a kitchen and a pool for water.

Excavations that have been continuing in Alacahöyük, one of the centers of Hittite civilization and considered Turkey’s first “national excavation field,” have unearthed nearly 3,700-year-old hair ties and jewelry made of animal horns.
The head of the excavations, Professor Aykut Çınaroğlu, said they had found the hair ties during excavations in the chambers of the mine factory.
“The four ties we found are made of bronze, copper and tin. The motifs on the ties are interesting. We estimate that the Hittite women used these ties to tie their hair in ponytails,” he said.
Çınaroğlu said both the royal family members and the public had used the hair ties according to their estimations.
He said the ties were produced in the factory. “Hittite people were proud of their beardless and clean face, but the Assyrians had beards. In my opinion, these ties were used by women. We know that the Hittite women used to wear earrings and necklaces. They would have been used by the public.”
He said they had also found jewelry made of horns during an excavation in another field.
“It has some motifs on it like an eye. It is nice jewelry. We don’t know what kind of horn it is. It was also used by the public. Such jewelry was used in the Hittite era. We can say that these people were fond of such things,” Çınaroğlu said, adding that works would continue and that they expected to find other important artifacts during the excavations in the factory and other fields.

A movie is due to be shot at Tokat Castle, Turkey’s second-largest castle in the northern province of Tokat, where it is claimed that Wallachian Prince Vlad III “The Impaler,” also known as Dracula, was held captive in one of the the castle’s dungeons in the early 15th century.
“The historical claims that build a connection between Tokat and Count Dracula are of great importance for fueling Tokat’s touristic, cultural and artistic life,” said the movie’s Turkish producer Erol Koçan.
“In this vein, we have decided to shoot the film partly in Tokat. We’ll shoot in almost all historical sites of Tokat.
It will be a comedy movie, but the main aim is to publicize Tokat and its historical and touristic richness,” added Koçan, who is himself originally from Tokat.
Restoration work at the castle was started in 2009 by the Tokat Governor’s Office Provincial Culture and Tourism Directorate, in order to open the castle to tourism. Restoration was completed in 2010, and last September work began again to reinforce the defensive bastions of the castle that were used in the Seljuk and Ottoman periods.
Over the course of the restoration, archaeologists discovered a military shelter, two dungeons and a secret tunnel to the Pervane Bath in Tokat’s city center.

Excavations in the historic Zerzevan Castle in the eastern province of Diyarbakır’s Çınar district have unearthed the first church of Roman Christians beneath the fortress.
“We have determined that it was an underground church or underground sanctuary,” said Dicle University Archaeology Department Professor Aytaç Coşkun. “The church may be the first sanctuary that was discovered after the transition from the polytheistic religions to Christianity. The early Romans prayed here after they became Christian.”
The castle served as a military base during the Roman era and works that started last year there have been continuing with a team of 60 people.
The castle in the Demirölçek neighborhood, 13 kilometers from the city center, boasts the remnants of 12-meter-high and 1,200-meter-long city walls, a 22-meter-high observation tower, church, palace, residence, rock tombs, baths, granaries and armories, as well as 54 water cisterns.
Coşkun said the Zerzevan Castle was considered the “Roman Headquarters” as it had been a military base in the Roman era.
Soldiers used to live in the facility with their families, Coşkun said, adding that they had found jewelry belonging to family members and other traces of civil life.
“The castle is positioned on a strategic spot between the ancient Dara and Amida [Diyarbakır]. This is why it met the army before the city did. It is known that big battles occurred here,” he said.
He said they estimated that the castle was home to 1,000 people including civilians and soldiers, and that its field had been used until the arrival of Islamic armies in 639 A.D.
Underground church or underground sanctuary
Coşkun said they had discovered Aramaic writing on the walls of the sanctuary and had invited a specialist to decipherer the writing.
There are also crosses inscribed into some sections of the sanctuary, the professor said. “They built the baptismal font in the main rock. It is pretty big. As the number of Christians increased, they built this church. The bigger church, where soldiers and civilians prayed, was built some 150 years after this sanctuary.”
The excavations, carried out in collaboration with the Culture and Tourism Ministry, Diyarbakır Governor’s Office and Dicle University, are expected to last 30 years.

Excavation work at Ovaören village in Central Anatolian Nevşehir province has brought to light a settlement in ancient Yassıhöyük dating back to 1,700 B.C.
The ancient site could, however, even date back to 6,000 B.C., said the head of the excavation team and the director of the Gazi University Archaeology Department, Yücel Şenyurt.
A team of 23 archaeologists along with 26 people from Ovaören have been carrying out the excavation works, which were launched in 2007 by a decision of the Council of Ministers.
Yassıhöyük along with Topakhöyük and its booms constitute the largest excavation fields in Turkey at some 350,000 square meters.
The works revealed the oldest settlement, formed in Topakhöyük around 2,500 B.C., has been a rich settlement regarding the archaeological findings, build-up plan and tombs.
“The printing of the seals [found during the excavation] shows that a trade colony had lived in the area. In Yassıhöyük, we have been trying to document the settlement of Hittites lying under these architectural layers dating back to the Iron Age. We have also revealed that this urban-looking settlement of Yassıhöyük was surrounded by defense systems in the Middle Iron Age, as in the Hittite Age. The ruins of seven-meter-long walls and the portals of the town in Ovaören-Yassıhöyük will become important tourism destinations in the near future, I believe,” said Şenyurt.

Once a hub for pirate activity, the ancient city of Antiocheia Ad Cragnum in Antalya’s Gazipaşa district is now undergoing renewed excavations that is shedding new light on the history of the area.
“In the excavations, we have uncovered a 600-meter-long mosaic, some remains of a bath and a parliament building so far,” said Dr. Birol Can, the excavation crew coordinator for the site and a lecturer at Uşak University’s Science and Literature Department Archaeology Department.
“Aside from these, we also unearthed a small temple with a mosaic floor covering … and discovered the head of a mythological figure, Medusa, near the temple. This is a figure directly on a triangular-shaped pediment based on four columns. Medusa is the mortal one of the Gorgon siblings, a fantastic figure emerging from the imagination of the ancient people. Described as snake-headed, bronze-handed, and golden winged, Medusa emerges as a figure that terrifies everyone,” he said.
“Some sources have shown that the entire Cilician coastline was used as shelter by the pirates. Its geographical location and connection to the sea also contributes to this idea. The structure of the area is one where the mountains are parallel to the sea. Though the rocky areas are close to the sea, the city nevertheless is 350 meters high. The pirates took advantage of the means provided by nature. Before the Roman period, the pirates sometimes raided the cities on the land and sometimes the trade ships. Roman commander Pompeius Magnus eliminated the threat of piracy from this ‘pirate city,’ after which we see a Roman presence in the area,” Can said.
After the Roman Empire developed a strong presence in the area, the town was ceded to the Cappadocia Kingdom, added Can.
“In this period, Cappadocian King Antiochos IV made investments here and built towns. One of these towns was Antiochos in Antiocheia ad Cragnum.”
The professor also said they had discovered 2,000 to 2,500-year-old anchors during underwater expeditions that are set to enlighten the town’s history.
Excavations in the ancient city have been conducted by 60 people since 2005, Can said, adding that the dig is being conducted under the chairmanship fo Nebraska University Professor Michael Hoff.
