Six girls from different countries talk about their experiences of sexual violence in and around school. Produced, and at times filmed by other young people* this film is an honest and intimate look at school related gender based violence.
The film focuses on girls born in the year 2000 as part of series "Millennium Children" that looks at how the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) have benefited or failed them.
As we reach the end date of the MDGs and set out new targets, young people from across the globe conclude that school-related gender-based violence (SRGBV) is destroying girls' education and that the issue needs to be addressed - fast.
SRGBV limits enrolment, undermines participation, and increases dropout rates due to fear of violence and underage pregnancy. Girls should not have to live in fear. Let them learn and achieve their dreams.

* Plan youth from the engagement project 'Global Voice for Change' played a key part in the Millennium Children video, trained by Plan staff to be interviewers and camera operatives. This unique project seeks to give 15-year-olds a voice, and at the same time train other young people to report, produce and film their stories.

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Susana Pavlou's TEDx UniversityofNicosia talk challenges us to look deeper at rape culture and forces us to deconstruct preconceptions and prejudices in relation to sexual violence. Her talk uncovers settling truths, but in her own words, “it is necessary to challenge the normalization of sexual violence against women in our society”.
Susana is Director at the Mediterranean Institute of Gender Studies (MIGS). She has extensive experience in the coordination and management of projects, in gender equality training and education, and in gender research and analysis, with particular expertise on issues of gender and social policy, and violence against women. Susana is a Member of the Advisory Committee for the Prevention and Combating of Family Violence, National Expert for the European Network of Experts in Gender Equality, and Expert at the EWL Observatory on Violence against Women. She is serving a third term as Board Member of the European Women’s Lobby and is a member of the Executive Committee.
Susana Elisa Pavlou holds a BA in Political Science from the State University of New York at Stony Brook and an MSc in International Politics with an area concentration in the Middle East from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), London University.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. After 20 years of democracy, South Africa remains in the shadows of rates of rape, abuse, and violence so high that they're threatening to suffocate the voice of girls throughout the rainbow nation.
The SEED community mentoring program, GirlZtalk, offers support, education and advice to women from the rural communities of Limpopo. Matsupishu is a student member with experience of sexual abuse, before she decided to take action. "These guys took away my power, but only for a moment. Because I decided, I made a conscious decision: I am going to take my power back". In a climate where a tiny percentage of sexual crimes are followed by successful prosecutions, grass roots feminism often offers the only way for women to come together, share their experiences and give each other support. And members of organisations like GirlZtalk are optimistic about facing up to the challenge. "If we start standing up and start talking about it enough, then it will eventually come to an end".

In episode 5, Ben tackles the growing problem of male rape. While the vast majority of sexual violence is committed against girls and women, it is wrong to assume that rape is a purely a male-perpetrator, female victim crime.
Ben suggests that male rape needs to be added to debates on sexual violence. He argues that it's virtually invisible at present and if it is ever discussed, it is with hushed tones as if it is a taboo.

wn.com/Episode 5 Men The Forgotten Victims Of Sexual Violence
In episode 5, Ben tackles the growing problem of male rape. While the vast majority of sexual violence is committed against girls and women, it is wrong to assume that rape is a purely a male-perpetrator, female victim crime.
Ben suggests that male rape needs to be added to debates on sexual violence. He argues that it's virtually invisible at present and if it is ever discussed, it is with hushed tones as if it is a taboo.

Speaking out on Kenya's common but silent epidemic that is sexual gender based violence
Sexual gender based violence is one of the most widespread and socially tolerated forms of human rights violations, which cuts across borders, race, class, ethnicity and religion.
Sadly, in Kenya this reality seems to be silenced by the fear of stigmatization and societal pressure.
Gladys Gachanja takes a deeper look at what is now being referred to as the 'silent epidemic'.

ADWAS logo appears, a large blue hand with smaller white hands reaching inside. Text: abused Deaf women’s advocacy services
ASADV logo appears, a red circle with white text saying Advocacy Services for Abused Deaf Victims. In the middle of the circle is an abstract image representing justice.

Vera’s logo appears, VERA in white letters with purple background, with purple letters below it, “Institute of Justice.”
Black background with white text: INTRODUCING… DEAF ACTION TO END DOMESTIC + SEXUAL VIOLENCE
Erin Esposito from ASADV appears. “Hi everyone! Our agencies, ADWAS, ASADV, and DeafHope, have come together, along with the Vera Institute of Justice, an allied organization committed to supporting the Deaf communities’ efforts to end domestic and sexual violence, to start a new project that we are excited to tell you about today. Our four agencies have received a 3 year grant from the US Dept of Justice, Office on Violence Against Women—the first grant of its kind---to support our communities efforts to address domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and/or stalking in Deaf communities.”
Tara Holcomb from DeafHope appears. “This is an exciting time in our community because these issues—domestic and sexual violence-- are getting more attention and there are more people than ever addressing this issue. There are a number of Deaf-run agencies including our agencies that are working hard to address this violence, and people are coming together and wanting to start more Deaf programs. Our project has 3 goals: 1. Strengthen the Deaf run movement to end domestic and sexual violence by advancing the needs of Deaf survivors in national mainstream efforts. 2. Bring Deaf programs together to share their successes and resources, problem solve any challenges, and network. 3. Help programs grow (including ours) and new programs emerge by providing free training, and practical guidance from experts in our field.”
Libby Stanley from ADWAS appears. “To help us plan the project in a way that meets the needs of existing and emerging Deaf programs we will be reaching out to Deaf programs to schedule one-on-one meetings. The purpose of these meetings are to understand your strengths, your needs, and the type of guidance that will support your program. We are so excited to facilitate these resources being available to all of us. We will share more information with you about the specific conferences, webinars, and other resources that will be available after we learn from Deaf programs about what they need. In the meantime, please reach out to us if you have any questions. You can reach us at DeafTA@vera.org.”
White text on black background appears: We look forward to working with you!
Each member of this partnership appears on video to introduce themselves:

Erin Esposito with ASADV, Advocacy Services for Abused Deaf Victims.
Nancy Smith with Vera Institute of Justice.
Amber Hodson, Aracelia Aguilar, and Tara Holcomb with DeafHope.
Charity Hope with Vera Institute of Justice.

Sexual violence on college campuses is a serious national problem, and universities and colleges around the country have been working to address the issue. Campuses are in the unique position to be leaders in developing coordinated awareness-raising, prevention and response efforts. So what are higher education institutions doing to communicate their efforts to address sexual assault and violence? How are they dealing with issues such as Title IX, the Clery Act and ongoing Department of Education investigations?
During this live broadcast, Kent Cassella, associate vice president for communications for Michigan State University, and Rick Fitzgerald, director of public affairs and internal communications for the University of Michigan, will discuss these topics and explain their communications efforts. This episode is produced in partnership with the Public Relations Society of America Counselors to Higher Education. PRSA-CHE members are encouraged to participate to share their experiences.

Dr Nayanika Mookherjee's Ph D thesis, published-recently by Duke University Press, The Spectral Wound- Sexual Violence, Public Memories and the Bangladesh War of 1971, was launched at Drik on Sunday January 3, 2016.
At Drik's Book Launch, titled "Imaging the Birangona," Dr Mookherjee presented photographs of birangonas, and reflected on dominant representations of women subjected to war rape in 1971.
Following the 1971 Bangladesh War, the Bangladesh government publicly designated the thousands of women raped by the Pakistani military and their local collaborators as birangonas, ("brave women”). Nayanika Mookherjee demonstrates that while this celebration of birangonas as heroes keeps them in the public memory, they exist in the public consciousness as what Mookherjee calls a spectral wound. Dominant representations of birangonas as dehumanized victims with disheveled hair, a vacant look, and rejected by their communities create this wound, the effects of which flatten the diversity of their experiences through which birangonas have lived with the violence of wartime rape. In critically examining the pervasiveness of the birangona construction, Mookherjee opens the possibility for a more politico-economic, ethical, and nuanced inquiry into the sexuality of war.
Award-winning photographer Taslima Akhter, who teaches at Pathshala, was a discussant. The programme was chaired by photographer and curator Dr. Shahidul Alam.
The video should be of particular interest to those keen on photography, feminism, nationalism, and the war of liberation.

In this episode of the Philippe Matthews Show LIVE, we are going to uncover yet another dark secret of slavery in African American and Anglo Saxon histrory as it relates to women being able to heal the epigenetic, systemic injury of Slave Breeding: Sex, Violence and Memory in African American History (http://amzn.to/1LPTtRA) with Professor Gregory Smithers.
For over two centuries, the topic of slave breeding has occupied a controversial place in the master narrative of American history. From nineteenth-century abolitionists to twentieth-century filmmakers and artists, Americans have debated whether slave owners deliberately and coercively manipulated the sexual practices and marital status of enslaved African Americans to reproduce new generations of slaves for profit.
In this bold and provocative book, historian Gregory Smithers investigates how African Americans have narrated, remembered, and represented slave-breeding practices. He argues that while social and economic historians have downplayed the significance of slave breeding, African Americans have refused to forget the violence and sexual coercion associated with the plantation South. By placing African American histories and memories of slave breeding within the larger context of America’s history of racial and gender discrimination, Smithers sheds much-needed light on African American collective memory, racialized perceptions of fragile black families, and the long history of racially motivated violence against men, women, and children of color.

Praise for Slave Breeding:
“As engaging as it is compelling, bold, and captivating, Smithers’s Slave Breeding pulls the reader through its pages with heart-wrenching exposition of the dark and ugly chapter of what could rightly be characterized as the sexual zeitgeist of American national history.”--TUNDE ADELEKE
"Underscores the broad meaning of the continuing debates over sexual violence during and after slavery, the centrality of the African American family, and white hypocrisy." CHOICE
"A thought-provoking piece of scholarship that sheds light on the complex history of slave breeding in America. Smithers's book will be hotly debated in the profession." MICHAEL L. ONDAATJE
"Slave Breeding makes a powerful case not just to reexamine sexual exploitation under slavery and the power of memory as an historical tool but also to interrogate accepted historical narratives." Journal of American History Vol. 100, no. 3 (2013)
“Boldly and persuasively challenges received wisdom about the American narrative during the last two centuries.” Journal of Interdisciplinary History Vol. 44, no. 2 (2013)

The global campaigns to treat sexual violence during conflict as war crimes and to include women in peace processes have made notable strides over the past decade. Yet, sexual violence in conflict continues on a horrific scale. This is true in Syria, where the brutal conflict continues after more than three years with no resolution in sight. Sexual violence, including rape and other forms of sexual assault, is being perpetrated by all sides. Sex trafficking is taking place in the border areas and in refugee camps, and women and girls are being forced into "one-hour" marriages against their will. In 2013 alone, over 38,000 people sought help from the United Nations after surviving sexual or other gender-based violence in Syria, a number that is likely vastly underreported. IDN, The Carter Center, and CARE invited a panel of distinguished experts to talk about the role of sexual violence in the Syrian conflict and the surrounding region, what is being done to address it and what it will take to address the needs of survivors. The panel included Lauren Wolfe, Christopher McNaboe, Liz McLaughlin, and Pamela Scully.

February 12, 2015 | Sexual violence is an issue affecting different genders, countries, and socio-economic classes; all faith communities have survivors and perpetrators. Faith leaders, communities, and organizations can help to provide support for survivors as well as work on prevention in the United States and globally. This round-table discussion will bring together practitioners and scholars with different perspectives on this complex issue to initiate dialogue with participants, discuss engaging faith actors, and consider the underappreciated implications of sexual violence, domestic violence, and intimate partner violence for society.
This event is co-sponsored by the Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs, the World Faiths Development Dialogue, Sexual Assault Response and Prevention Services at Georgetown, and the Georgetown University Women's Center.
