Tutorial: D5100 Hack - Manual Video & More
This video teaches you how to download, patch and install the
Nikon Hacker's patched firmware on your
D5100. It works perfectly and increases the video capabilities of the camera tremendously!
The Patched firmware enables you to remove time based video restrictions, liveview manual
ISO and shutter speed control, clean
HDMI &
LCD liveview output, to remove
NEF compression, to disable Nikon "star eater" (
http://www.astrosurf.com/buil/d70v10d/eval
.htm), to use third party batteries and more.
Prerequisites:
Have
Microsoft Silverlight installed on your computer (http://www.microsoft.com/getsilverlight/Get-Started/Install/
Default.aspx).
*WARNING: If you are upgrading from a past patched firmware,
DO NOT procede using a third party battery!!! For the firmware installation, use ONLY ORIGINAL Nikon batteries.
**
DO IT AT YOUR
OWN RISK! This could ruin your camera (very unlikely though).
STEP 1
Download your camera's firmware from the official Nikon website.
https://support.nikonusa.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/13783#Anchor-DSLR-3800
STEP 2
Uncompress the download file and copy the firmware file (
.bin extension) to a known location of easy access.
On mac, just open the "
.dmg" downloaded from Nikon and copy the ".bin" firmware file to your computer. It will be inside a folder with you camera model's name. (Ex: D5100/D5100_0102.bin)
On
Windows, use
7zip or WinRAR to open the downloaded file and copy the firmware file to your computer.
STEP 3
Open the
Online Nikon
Patching Tool (http://simeonpilgrim.com/nikon-patch/nikon-patch
.html).
3.1 Select the official Nikon firmware ".bin" file saved on your computer on STEP 2.
3.2 If the correct file was chosen, the camera model and firmware version will appear on the top left corner of the patching tool.
3.3
Check the boxes with the features you want to modify.
3.4
Click on "
Save Patched Firmware
File". Make sure you use the same name as the original firmware. Do not forget to add the ".bin" extension on the file name. Save it on a different location from the original firmware.
STEP 4
Insert your
SD card.
Copy the Patched file to the SD. Make sure you copy it to the "root" of the SD and not the "
DCIM" folder, for example.
STEP 5
5.1 Insert the SD back in to the camera.
Turn on the camera.
5.2 Make sure your battery level is FULL!
5.3 Click on the "
Menu" button on the top left corner of the camera (D5100).
5.4 Navigate to "SETUP
MENU" (tool icon on the left of the screen) and then "Firmware
Version".
5.5 Select "
Update" and confirm by clicking "
Yes".
Wait patiently for it to finish and then click on "
Done".
Now you have a
Hacked Nikon D5100 with lots of new features!
