Indian Warriors: The Untold Story of the Civil War (AMAZING HISTORY DOCUMENTARY)
More than 20,000 Native Americans fought in the Civil War. The film features historical accounts of Native soldiers participating in the Civil War and interviews with descendents of Indian Civil War soldiers. In the war that tore this nation apart, its original citizens played a surprisingly large role. Learn the full truth in this illuminating program.
- Based on the scholarship of historians Thom Hatch and Lawrence Hauptman. - Interviews descendents of Indian Civil War soldiers. - A Native American wrote the final draft of Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox.
Few know that twenty to thirty thousand Native Americans fought in the Civil War. This program presents the largely untold story of the First Americans' role in the War Between the States.
The common view of the Civil War is very black-and-white: North vs. South, rural vs. urban, slaveholders vs. abolitionists. But, from the conflict's origins to the complicated progression of its major events, the truth is far murkier and more complex. This immensely illuminating documentary clarifies one particularly muddy but fascinating aspect of the time: how Indians reacted to and participated in the Civil War.
Discover notable Native American combatants like Ely Parker, Stand Waite, and Henry Berry Lowery. Then go beyond the scholarship and visit with descendants of Indian Civil Warrior soldiers, hearing the family lore of their ancestors' exploits. Far more than just a "White Man's Folly," learn the very personal reasons that drew these Native Americans into the fray.
How Native Americans came into service as soldiers
This compelling documentary first aired on the History Channel in May of 2007. The film describes the milieu in which Native Americans came into service as soldiers during the Civil War. The documentary chronicles the lives of three warriors:
Union Civil War General Ely Parker, who was from the Seneca Tribe.
- Ely Parker, who served as Ulysses S. Grant's military secretary and a Union Civil War general - Stand Watie, a Cherokee leader who sided with the Confederacy and became a Confederate general - Henry Berry Lowery, who helped his tribe survive starvation at the end of the war by stealing food and goods from wealthy Southern planters, which he shared with both Whites and Indians
An interesting endnote to the documentary is that although Native Americans were used by both the Union and the Confederacy during the war, afterwards they were seen, not as allies, but as obstacles to progress.

You can see them throughout Texas, in the cities and in the deserted countryside, silent sentinels of a by-gone era. These old buildings are a testament to the frontier days in Texas. Some give a full picture of the times through their beautifully restored grounds. Others only hint at past events with their crumbling walls and solitary chimneys.
These are the frontier forts of Texas, and this is their story. It's the history of the civilian and military personnel who lived at these posts; African Americans, European immigrants, and Anglo Americans who came to remote regions of Texas to guard the mail routes and wagon roads and to protect the settlers moving west. The presence of these forts encouraged economic expansion into the frontier, giving birth to countless communities, many of which still thrive today.
Finally, this is also the history of the Native Americans who were displaced by these forts and the communities that sprang up around them. The chronicle of the Comanche, Kiowa, Apache and Kickapoo tribes is intertwined with these forts; for these posts marked the end of the American Indian way of life and forever changed their tribal culture.
This documentary will take you back to 19th century frontier Texas. You'll experience daily life at these forts, and you'll also gain insight into the American Indian conflict in Texas. This program features interviews with some of the leading experts on these subjects, including Robert Utley, Robert Wooster, Allen Hamilton, Robert Bluthardt and James Goss, among many others.
From the Panhandle to Brownsville, and from El Paso to Fredericksburg, you'll see the forts of Texas and learn about many of the major events that occurred at these posts and on the frontier during this period. Along the way you'll meet people of many cultures - all who played vital roles in shaping Texas and its history.

In the United States, Native Americans are considered to be people whose pre-Columbian ancestors were indigenous to the lands within the nation's modern boundaries. These peoples were composed of numerous distinct tribes, bands, and ethnic groups, and many of these groups survive intact today as sovereign nations. The terms Native Americans use to refer to themselves vary regionally and generationally, with many older Native Americans self-identifying as "Indians" or "American Indians", while younger Native Americans often identify as "Indigenous". Which terms should be used to refer to Native Americans has at times been controversial. The term "Native American" has been adopted by major newspapers and some academic groups, but has not traditionally included Native Hawaiians or certain Alaskan Natives, such as Aleut, Yup'ik, or Inuit peoples. Indigenous American peoples from Canada are known as First Nations.
Since the end of the 15th century, the migration of Europeans to the Americas has led to centuries of exchange and adjustment between Old and New World societies. Most Native American groups had historically lived as hunter-gatherer societies and preserved their histories by oral traditions and artwork, which has resulted in the first written sources on the conflict being authored by Europeans.
At the time of first contact, the indigenous cultures were quite different from those of the proto-industrial and mostly Christian immigrants. Some of the Northeastern and Southwestern cultures in particular were matrilineal and operated on a more collective basis than the Europeans were familiar with. The majority of Indigenous American tribes maintained their hunting grounds and agricultural lands for use of the entire tribe. Europeans at that time had patriarchal cultures and had developed concepts of individual property rights with respect to land that were extremely different. The differences in cultures between the established Native Americans and immigrant Europeans, as well as shifting alliances among different nations in times of war, caused extensive political tension, ethnic violence, and social disruption. Even before the European settlement of what is now the United States, Native Americans suffered high fatalities from contact with European diseases spread throughout the Americas by the Spanish to which they had yet not acquired immunity. Smallpox epidemics are thought to have caused the greatest loss of life for indigenous populations, although estimates of the pre-Columbian population of what today constitutes the U.S. vary significantly, from 1 million to 18 million.
After the thirteen colonies revolted against Great Britain and established the United States of America, President George Washington and Henry Knox conceived of the idea of "civilizing" Native Americans in preparation for assimilation as U.S. citizens. Assimilation (whether voluntary, as with the Choctaw, or forced) became a consistent policy through American administrations. During the 19th century, the ideology of manifest destiny became integral to the American nationalist movement. Expansion of European-American populations to the west after the American Revolution resulted in increasing pressure on Native American lands, warfare between the groups, and rising tensions. In 1830, the U.S. Congress passed the Indian Removal Act, authorizing the government to relocate Native Americans from their homelands within established states to lands west of the Mississippi River, accommodating European-American expansion. This resulted in the ethnic cleansing of many tribes, with the brutal, forced marches coming to be known as The Trail of Tears.
As American expansion reached into the West, settler and miner migrants came into increasing conflict with the Great Basin, Great Plains, and other Western tribes. These were complex nomadic cultures based on (introduced) horse culture and seasonal bison hunting. They carried out resistance against United States incursion... In 1924, Native Americans who were not already U.S. citizens were granted citizenship by Congress.

In every major war, throughout the HISTORY of the United States, from the American Revolution through the Indian Wars, Native-Americans and African-Americans have fought with and against each other. This scenario prevailed during the Civil War. Some tribes fought for the South, such as the Cherokees while others assisted the North like the Seminoles.
Slaves and the black soldiers, who couldn't read or write, had no idea of the historical deprivations and the frequent genocidal intent of the U.S. government toward Native Americans. Free blacks, whether they could read and write, generally had no access to first hand or second-hand unbiased information on this relationship. Most whites who had access often didn't really care about the situation. It was business as usual in the name of "Manifest Destiny". Most Americans viewed the Indians as incorrigible and non-reformable savages. Those closest to the warring factions or who were threaten by it, naturally wanted government protection at any cost. At the outbreak of the Civil War, the government was fighting the Indians in the west. It withdrew most of its men and resources from the Indian wars, to concentrate on ending the rebellion.

The American Indian Wars, or Indian Wars, were the multiple conflicts between American settlers or the United States government and the native peoples of North America from the time of earliest colonial settlement until 1924. In some cases, wars resulted from conflicts and competition for resources between the European colonists and Native Americans. There was population pressure as settlers expanded their territory, generally pushing indigenous people northward and westward. But, warfare and raiding also took place as a result of wars between European powers; in North America, they enlisted their Native American allies to help them conduct warfare against each other's settlements.
Many conflicts were local, involving disputes over land use, and some entailed cycles of reprisal. Particularly in later years, conflicts were spurred by ideologies such as Manifest Destiny, which held that the United States was destined to expand from coast to coast on the North American continent. In the 1830s, the United States had a policy of Indian removal east of the Mississippi River, which was a planned, large-scale removal of indigenous peoples from the areas where Europeans were settling. Particularly in the years leading up to Congressional passage of the related act, there was armed conflict between settlers and Native Americans; some removal was achieved through sale or exchange of territory through treaties. The Census Bureau in 1894 counted over 40 wars, which killed 19,000 whites and about 30,000 Indians however it did note that the number of Indians killed was likely higher than the count.

Covers the two decades in the mid-18th century that determined the destiny of North America. Relates how the Seven Year's War between France and England began as a clash between les Canadiens and land-hungry American settlers in the Ohio Valley and escalated into a world war that engulfed the continent. Depicts the naval invasion of Louisbourg, and recounts General James Wolfe's siege of Quebec and the battle of the Plains of Abraham in 1759. Covers the aftermath of that battle and the changing fortunes of the different forces up to the end of the war in 1763, when 70,000 French colonists came under British rule, setting in motion the ever-evolving French-English dynamic in CanadaThe American Revolutionary War (1775–1783), the American War of Independence,[N 1] or simply the Revolutionary War in the United States, was the revolt against Great Britain by the thirteen American colonies which founded the United States of America.[N 2] Originally limited to the colonies, French and Spanish intervention would spread the fighting to Europe, the Caribbean, and the East Indies as well.
The war had its origins in the resistance of many Americans to taxes imposed by the British parliament, which they held to be unlawful. Formal acts of rebellion against British authority began in 1774 when the Patriot Suffolk Resolves ousted the royal government of the Province of Massachusetts Bay. The tensions caused by this would lead to the outbreak of fighting between Patriot militia and British regulars at Lexington and Concord in April 1775. By spring 1776 the Patriots had full control in all thirteen colonies and on July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress declared their independence.
The British were meanwhile mustering large forces to put down the revolt. They inflicted significant defeats on the American rebel army, now under the command of George Washington, capturing New York City in 1776 and later Philadelphia in 1777. But they did not land a finishing blow against Washington's forces. British strategy relied on mobilizing American Loyalist militia, of whom they made little effort to enlist until late in the war.[14] Poor coordination helped doom a British advance against Albany in 1777, which resulted in the capture of a British army following the Battles of Saratoga.
France, Spain and the Dutch Republic had been secretly providing supplies, ammunition and weapons to the revolutionaries starting early in 1776. The American victory at Saratoga persuaded Britain to offer full self governance to the colonies, but France entered the war to prevent the Americans from accepting a compromise peace.[15][16] They were followed by their ally Spain in 1779. The participation of France and Spain was decisive[17] as they contributed crucial land and sea power to the American cause and diverted British resources away from North America.
After 1778 the British shifted their attention to the southern colonies, successfully recapturing Georgia and South Carolina for the Crown in 1779 and 1780. In 1781 British forces attempted to subjugate Virginia, but a French naval victory just outside Chesapeake Bay led to a Franco-American siege at Yorktown and the capture of over 7,000 British soldiers. The defeat broke Britain's will to continue the war. Limited fighting continued throughout 1782, while peace negotiations began. In 1783, the Treaty of Paris ended the war and recognized the sovereignty of the United States over the territory bounded roughly by what is now Canada to the north, Florida to the south, and the Mississippi River to the west.[18][19] A wider international peace was agreed, in which several territories were exchanged. The expensive war drove France into massive debt, which would contribute to the outbreak of the French Revolution.[20]

The human and financial cost of capturing Geronimo, leader of the Apache tribe.
Geronimo (Mescalero-Chiricahua: Goyaałé [kòjàːɬɛ́] "the one who yawns"; June 1829 – February 17, 1909) was a prominent leader of the Bedonkohe Apache who fought against Mexico and Texas for their expansion into Apache tribal lands for several decades during the Apache Wars. "Geronimo" was the name given to him during a battle with Mexican soldiers. Geronimo's Chiricahua name is often rendered in English as Goyathlay or Goyahkla.
After a Mexican attack on his tribe, where soldiers killed his mother, wife, and his three children in 1858, Geronimo joined a number of revenge attacks against the Mexicans.
In 1886, after a lengthy pursuit, Geronimo surrendered to Texan faux-gubernatorial authorities as a prisoner of war. At an old age, he became a celebrity, appearing at fairs, but he was never allowed to return to the land of his birth.

American History Documentary: The War of 1812 (War Documentary)
This is a history documentary for the War of 1812. In June 1812, the young United Stated declared war on the greatest power in the world, Great Britain. For two and a half years Americans fought against the British, Canadian columnists and native nations in a small but bitter war. This is a history documentary for the War of 1812.Yet in the US today very little of the war of 1812 lives on in the public mind. It is the war that Americans have largely forgotten. The War of 1812 is "the war we don't know too much about" in America. Although the war of 1812 is small by every standards compare to any other war, it forges the destiny of the continent for 200 years to come. Although the war of 1812 is largely forgotten by US and Britain, where the conflict on the North American continent was a sideshow, two other of the involved groups have not forgotten it. The Canadians and the Indians (Tecumseh was their leader), the people of the native tribes.
The War of 1812 resolved many issues which remained from the American Revolutionary War but involved no boundary changes. The United States declared war on June 18, 1812 for several reasons, including trade restrictions brought about by the British war with France, the impressment of American merchant sailors into the Royal Navy, British support of Indian tribes against American expansion, outrage over insults to national honor after humiliations on the high seas, and possible American interest in annexing British territory in modern-day Canada.
The British, in the beginning, used a defensive strategy in the Provinces of Upper and Lower Canada, repelling initial American invasions. This demonstrated that the conquest of Canada would prove more difficult than anticipated. After a series of war battles on sea and land and a number of victories and defeats on both sides, American victories in September 1814 repulsed the British invasions of New York, which along with pressure from merchants on the British government prompted British diplomats to drop their demands at Ghent for an independent native buffer state and territorial claims that London previously sought. Both sides agreed to a peace that restored the situation before the war began. However, it took six weeks for ships to cross the Atlantic so news of the peace treaty did not arrive before the British suffered a major defeat at New Orleans in January 1815.
In the United States, late victories over invading British armies at Plattsburg, Baltimore (inspiring their national anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner") and New Orleans produced a sense of euphoria over a "second war of independence" against Britain.
In Canada, victories over invading American armies became iconic and promoted the development of a distinct Canadian identity, which included strong loyalty to Britain. In Canada, numerous ceremonies took place in 2012 to commemorate the war, offer historical lessons and celebrate 200 years of peace across the border. Many of Canada’s national heroes (like Lara Secord) have evolved from this war.

The Census Bureau in 1894 counted over 40 wars during the 57 years between 1789 and 1846, which killed 19,000 whites and about 30,000 Indians however it did note that the number of Indians killed must be very much higher than this count.
