Crimean Tatars are a Turkic ethnic group native to the Crimean peninsula. They formed the majority population in Crimea from the time of their ethnogenesis in the 15th century until their 1944 deportation under Soviet rule.Crimean Tatars were allowed to return to Crimea only in the 1980s, where they now form a 12% minority.
In ancient times, Crimea was the home of Cimmerians and Scythians, as well as the site of Greek colonies. The most important city was Chersonesos at the edge of today's Sevastopol.
Later occupiers included the Romans, Goths, Huns, Bulgars, Khazars, the state of Kievan Rus', the Byzantine Empire, the Kipchaks, and the Golden Horde. In the 13th century, portions were controlled by the Republic of Venice and by the Republic of Genoa.
In the 9th century, Byzantium established the Cherson theme to fend against incursions by the Rus' Khaganate, and the Crimean peninsula from this time was contested between Byzantium, Rus' and Khazaria. The area remained the site of overlapping interests and contact between the early medieval Slavic, Turkic and Greek spheres, and became a center of slave trade in particular, the word slave itself deriving from the ethnonym of the Slavs who were sold to the Muslim world and Byzantium during this period. In the 1230s, this status quo was swept away by the Mongol invasions, and Crimea was incorporated into the territory of the Golden Horde throughout the 14th century.
The Crimean Khanate, a vassal state of the Ottoman Empire, succeeded the Golden Horde and lasted from 1449 to 1779. Until the late 18th century, Crimean Tatars maintained a massive slave trade with the Ottoman Empire, exporting about 2 million slaves from Russia and Ukraine over the period 1500--1700. The Khanate was conquered by the Russian Empire under Catherine the Great in 1783. From 1853 to 1856, the peninsula was the site of the principal engagements of the Crimean War, a conflict fought between the Russian Empire and an alliance of France, Britain, the Ottoman Empire, and Sardinia.
During the Russian Civil War, Crimea was controlled by the White Army. After they were defeated by the Red Army, Crimea became part of the Soviet Union in 1921 as Crimean Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. In the Second World War the peninsula was occupied by Nazi Germany for several years.
In 1954, it was transferred to the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic within the Soviet Union. In 1991, it became part of independent Ukraine as the Autonomous Republic of Crimea. As a result of the 2014 Crimean crisis and the accompanying Russian military intervention, sovereignty over the peninsula is currently disputed between Ukraine and the Russian Federation. The peninsula is now de facto occupied by the Russian Federation.
Carlo Bossoli spent his youth and the beginning of his artistic career in Odessa, Ukraine.
In 1839 he conducted his first trip to Italy where he remained for a year, travelling to Rome, Naples and other principal cities of the peninsula. In 1840 he returned to the Crimea, though left for good in 1843 heading for Canton Ticino and Milan, alternating between the two until 1853 when he moved for good to Turin. During the course of the 1850s, the artist carried out the majority of his travels; perhaps why it proved to be amongst the most productive periods of his life. In 1850 Bossoli travelled to England and Scotland and the following year to Spain and Morocco. In 1853 and in 1855, he returned to London where, in 1854, he published "Views of the Crimea", in which he showed some of the works executed during his youth.
Carlo Bossoli portrayed, similar to a modern day reporter, almost every corner of Europe, gaining great success in Italy as well as abroad. His works are an important contribution both to the knowledge of historical events and the history of costume. They give an unparallel survey of the landscape and the architecture, always reproduced with great attention to detail, and enriched with little scenes of local colour that bestow a particular note on Bossoli's works.

"When Soviet archaeologists excavated Khazarian kurgans (burial mounds) near the fortress of Sarkel, dating from the tenth of the twelfth centuries, they discovered physical remains that apparently were of members of the Khazar tribe. Some of theese Khazars belonged to a Slavic type, while others were short-skulled Europeans. Only a few Mongolian types were found." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khazars
Ashkenazi Jews, also known as Ashkenazic Jews or Ashkenazim are the Jews descended from the medieval Jewish communities of the Rhineland in the west of Germany. Ashkenaz is the medieval Hebrew name for the region which in modern times encompasses the country of Germany and German-speaking borderland areas.
In reference to the Jewish peoples of Northern Europe and particularly the Rhineland, the word Ashkenazi is often found in medieval rabbinic literature. References to Ashkenaz in Yosippon and Hasdai ibn Shaprut's letter to the king of the Khazars would date the term as far back as the 10'th century, as would also Saadia Gaon's commentary on Daniel 7:8.
The word "Ashkenaz" first appears in the genealogy in the Tanakh (Genesis 10:3) as a son of Gomer and grandson of Japheth. It is thought that the name originally applied to the Scythians (Ishkuz), who were called Ashkuza in Assyrian inscriptions, and lake Ascanius and the region Ascania in Anatolia derive their names from this group. The "Ashkuza" have also been linked to the Oghuz branch of Turks including nearly all Turkic peoples today from Turkey to Turkmenistan.
The Khazars were a semi-nomadic Turkic people who dominated the Pontic steppe and the North Caucasus from the 7th to the 10th century CE. The name 'Khazar' seems to be tied to a Turkic verb form meaning "wandering".
In the 7th century CE, the Khazars founded an independent Khaganate in the Northern Caucasus along the Caspian Sea. Although the Khazars were initially Tengri shamanists, many of them converted to Christianity, Islam, and other religions. During the eighth or ninth century the state religion became Judaism. At their height, the Khazar khaganate and its tributaries controlled much of what is today southern Russia, western Kazakhstan, eastern Ukraine, Azerbaijan, large portions of the Northern Caucasus ( Circassia, Dagestan, Chechnya), parts of Georgia and the Crimea.
Between 965 and 969, their sovereignty was broken by Sviatoslav I of Kiev, and they became a subject people of Kievan Rus'. Gradually displaced by the Rus, the Kipchaks, and later the conquering Mongol Golden Horde, the Khazars largely disappeared as a culturally distinct people.

Khazars are described by the generality of early Arab sources as having a white complexion, blue eyes, and reddish hair. The Turkic affinities of the Khazars are confirmed by modern anthropological studies. (source: Wikipedia)
Only a few Mongolian types were found." Ashkenazi Jews, also known as Ashkenazic Jews or Ashkenazim are the Jews descended from the medieval Jewish communities of the Rhineland in the west of Germany.
There have been Anti-Jews and crazy Black African Americans claiming to be Israelite Jews...yeah pretty funny. What's even more funnier is that they created a fake theory that Jews are originally these "Asian looking" Mongol Turkic people from the Khazar Khaganate who are todays modern Kazakh people. Well besides the fact that Jews have no history of converting because according to Halacha it was forbidden in the 1st and 2nd century, it is impossible for Jews to be descendants of these Asian looking people because they don't share the DNA, they obviously don't look like them, Yiddish has no Turkic influence and Ashkenazi Jews have no Turkic influence in their culture.
It is recorded that only 3,000 Khazars converted to Judaism which is impossible for them to increase in such little time, Kazakh history also claims that after the Khazars converted to Judaism, they were converted to Christianity by Kievan the Rus and finally adopted Islam as it became the official religion of all Turkic States. If you go to Kazakhstan today, you can meet different Turkic tribes including the Khazars and Kipchak in West Kazakhstan.
Finally, DNA has been taken in Israel and outside Israel such as in the US, Germany, Turkey, Kazkakhstan and they have proven that Jews are Semites as they have the DNA haplogroup J1 and J2. Also long before the Khazar conversion to Judaism, Jews were living in Europe (England,Germany,Netherlands,Poland,Russia) already. However what is true is that European Jews did intermarry with Europeans for the 1,000 years they were living in Europe just like most races did anyways.

Kha Khan or Khagan or Qagan (Mongolian: хаан, Khaan;) is a title in the Mongolian language equal to the status of emperor and used to refer to someone who rules a khaganate or empire. This title was later adopted by Turkic peoples (Old Turkic: 𐰴𐰍𐰣, kaɣan;
It may also be translated as Khan of Khans, equivalent to King of Kings. In modern Mongolian, the title became Khaan with the 'g' sound becoming almost silent or non-existent (i.e. a very light voiceless velar fricative); the ğ in modern Turkish Kağan is also silent. Since the civil war of the Mongol Empire, Emperors of the Yuan dynasty held the title of Khagan and their successors in Mongolia continued to have the title. Kağan is a common Turkish name in Turkey.
The common western rendering as Great Khan (or Grand Khan), notably in the case of the Mongol Empire, is translation of Yekhe Khagan (Great Emperor or Их Хаан).
The title was first seen in a speech between 283 and 289, when the Mongolic Xianbei chief Tuyuhun tried to escape from his younger stepbrother Murong Hui, and began his route from the Liaodong Peninsula to the areas of Ordos Desert. In the speech one of the Murong's general named Yinalou addressed him as kehan (可寒, later as 可汗), some sources suggests that Tuyuhun might also have used the title after settling at Qinghai Lake in the 3rd century.
The Rouran Khaganate (330-555) was the first people to use the titles Khagan and Khan for their emperors, replacing the Chanyu of the Xiongnu, whom Grousset and others assume to be Turkic.\ However, many scholars believe the Rouran were proto-Mongols.\
The Avar Khaganate 567–804, who may have included Rouran elements after the Göktürks crushed the Rouran ruling Mongolia, also used this title. The Avars invaded Europe, and for over a century ruled the Carpathian region. Westerners Latinized the title "Khagan" into "Gaganus" or Cagan et Iugurro principibus Hunorum.
The Secret History of the Mongols, written for that very dynasty, clearly distinguishes Khagan and Khan: only Genghis Khan and his ruling descendants are called Khagan, while other rulers are referred to as Khan. Khagan or Khaan refers to Emperor or King in the Mongolian language, however, Yekhe Khagan means Great Khagan or Grand Emperor.
The Mongol Empire began to politically split with the Toluid Civil War in 1260-1264 and the death of Kublai Khan in 1294, but the term Ikh Khagan (Great Khan, or Emperor) was still used by the emperors of the Yuan dynasty (1271–1368), who assumed the role of emperor of China, and after the fall of the Yuan in China (1368) it continued to be used in Mongolia during the Northern Yuan dynasty. Thus, the Yuan is sometimes referred to as the Empire of the Great Khan, coexisting with the independent Mongol khanates in the west, including the Chagatai Khanate and Golden Horde. Only the Ilkhanate truly recognized the Yuan's overlordship as allies (though it was effectively autonomous). Because Kublai founded the Yuan, the members of the other branches of the Borjigin could take part in the election of a new Khagan as the supporters of one or other of the contestants, but they could not enter the contest as candidates themselves. Later Yuan emperors made peace with the three western khanates of the Mongol Empire and were considered as their nominal suzerain. The nominal supremacy, while based on nothing like the same foundations as that of the earlier Khagans (such as the continued border clashes among them), did last for a few decades, until the Yuan Dynasty fell in China (1368).
After the breakdown of Mongol Empire and the fall of the Yuan Dynasty in the 14th century, the Mongols turned into a political turmoil. Dayan Khan (1464-1517/1543) once revived Emperor's authority and recovered its reputation in Mongolia, but with the distribution of his empire among his sons and relatives as fiefs it again caused decentralized rule. The last Khagan of the Chahars, Ligdan Khan, died in 1634 while fighting the Qing dynasty founded by the Manchu people. In contemporary Mongolian language the word "Khaan" and "Khan" have different meanings, while English language usually does not differentiate between them. The title is also used as a generic term for a king or emperor (as эзэн хаан, ezen khaan), as in "Испанийн хаан Хуан Карлос" (Ispaniin khaan Khuan Karlos, "king/khaan of Spain Juan Carlos").

Oleg of Novgorod (Russian: Олег, Old Norse: Helgi) was a Varangian prince (or konung) who ruled all or part of the Rus' people during the early 10th century.
He is credited by with moving the capital of Rus' from Novgorod the Great to Kiev and, in doing so, he laid the foundation of the powerful state of Kievan Rus'. Although, according to archeology, Novgorod did not exist during claimed by chronicle period of time of his appearance in Kiev. He also launched at least one attack on Constantinople, capital of the Byzantine Empire. According to East Slavic chronicles, Oleg was supreme ruler of the Rus' from 882 to 912.
This traditional dating has been challenged by some historians, who point out that it is inconsistent with such other sources as the Schechter Letter, which mentions the activities of certain khagan HLGW of Rus' as late the 940s, during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Romanus I. The nature of Oleg's relationship with the Rurikid ruling family of the Rus', and specifically with his successor Igor of Kiev, is a matter of much controversy among historians.
According to the Primary Chronicle, Oleg was a relative (likely brother-in-law) of the first ruler, Rurik, and was entrusted by Rurik to take care of both his kingdom and his young son Igor. Oleg gradually took control of the Dnieper cities, captured Kiev (previously held by the Varangian warlords, Askold and Dir) and finally moved his capital from Novgorod there. The new capital was a convenient place to launch a raid against Tsargrad (Constantinople) in 911.
According to the chronicle, the Byzantines attempted to poison Oleg, but the Rus' leader demonstrated his oracular powers by refusing to drink the cup of poisoned wine. Having fixed his shield to the gate of the imperial capital, Oleg won a favourable trade treaty, which eventually was of great benefit to both nations. Although Byzantine sources did not record these hostilities, the text of the treaty survives in the Primary Chronicle.
The Primary Chronicle's brief account of Oleg's life contrasts with other early sources, specifically the Novgorod First Chronicle, which states that Oleg was not related to Rurik, and was rather a Scandinavian client-prince who served as Igor's army commander. The Novgorod First Chronicle does not give the date of the commencement of Oleg's reign, but dates his death to 922 rather than 912.
Scholars have contrasted this dating scheme with the "epic" reigns of roughly thirty-three years for both Oleg and Igor in the Primary Chronicle. The Primary Chronicle and other Kievan sources place Oleg's grave in Kiev, while Novgorodian sources identify a funerary barrow in Ladoga as Oleg's final resting place.
In the Primary Chronicle, Oleg is known as the Prophet (вещий), an epithet alluding to the sacred meaning of his Norse name ("priest"). According to the legend, romanticised by Alexander Pushkin in his ballad "The Song of the Wise Oleg," it was prophesied by the pagan priests (volkhvs) that Oleg would take death from his stallion.
To defy the prophecies, he sent the horse away. Many years later he asked where his horse was, and was told it had died. He asked to see the remains and was taken to the place where the bones lay. When he touched the horse's skull with his boot a snake slithered from the skull and bit him. Oleg died, thus fulfilling the prophecy. In Scandinavian traditions, this legend lived on in the saga of Orvar-Odd.

Mongol Empire - Another great video clip from the Drive Thru History series and my friends at http://www.ColdWaterMedia.com
The Mongol Empire was founded by Genghis Khan, a Mongol political and military leader who sometimes brutally conquered and united the Mongol tribes. Between AD 1206, when Temujin received his title as Genghis Khan ("Ruler"), and AD 1370, when the last emperor in China's Yuan Dynasty died in exile, the Mongol "Khagan" ("Great Khans" or "Emperors") established the largest contiguous empire in world history.
At its height, the Mongol Empire covered large parts of modern-day China, Mongolia, Russia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia, Iraq, Iran, Turkey, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, Moldova, South Korea, North Korea, and Kuwait. After the death of Genghis Khan in 1227, the Mongol Empire grew even larger under his son, Tushi, and grandson, Kublai Khan, who established the Yuan Dynasty in China through at least 22 legitimate sons. This family legacy made the Khan's the most successful empire builders ever.
Mongol Empire -- The Silk Road
Once established, the Mongol Empire became a peaceful political environment that allowed increased communication and trade between the West, Middle East, and Asia. This openness meant that these previously separate worlds could begin to trade with each other.

Orkhon Valley sprawls along the banks of the Orkhon River in Central Mongolia, some 360 km west from the capital Ulaanbaatar.
For many centuries, the Orkhon Valley was viewed as the seat of the imperial power of the steppes. The first evidence comes from a stone stele with runic inscriptions, which was erected in the valley by Bilge Khan, an 8th-century ruler of the Göktürk Empire. Some 25 miles to the north of the stele, in the shadow of the sacred forest-mountain Ötüken, was his Ördü, or nomadic capital. During the Qidan domination of the valley, the stele was reinscribed in three languages, so as to record the deeds of a Qidan potentate.
Mountains were considered sacred in Tengriism as an axis mundi, but Ötüken was especially sacred because the ancestor spirits of the khagans and beys resided here. Moreover, a force called qut was believed to emanate from this mountain, granting the khagan the divine right to rule the Turkic tribes.[1] Whoever controlled this valley was considered heavenly appointed leader of the Turks and could rally the tribes. Thus control of the Orkhon Valley was of the utmost strategic importance for every Turkic state. Historically every Turkic capital (Ördü) was located here for this exact reason.

Don't forget to hit the Like and Subscribe videos to make sure you receive notifications about upcoming Literature, Grammar, Reading, Writing, and World History lessons from MrBrayman.Info.
This lesson covers the Mongol Empires and the rise of the Ottoman Empire in Period 3 of World History.
Below is the outline of the slides used in the lesson:
The Mongols and the Ottoman Empire
Shifts along the Silk Roads
The Eastern Empires
Effects on Europe
Europe's Westward Expansions
The Mongol Civilization before Ghengis Khan
Descendents of the Xiongnu, Huns, and other "Horse People of the Steppe"
Nomads—following weather and pasturage
Very tough warriors
Loosely organized tribes sometimes joined into larger confederacies
Raiding, banditry, theft, rape
Ghengis Khan
Born in the 1170s
Grandfather and father had been great leaders but had fallen from power (father was poisoned)
Taken prisoner in 1182 by a rival tribe and kept in a wooden collar, enslaved, humiliated
Freed and rose as a warrior and leader
United the Mongol tribes into a confederacy and became Khagan in 1206
Mongol Expansion under Ghengis Khan
The Great Khan once said that his greatest pleasure was making war and riding his enemies horses and sleeping with their wives and daughters.
Mongol Expansion under Ghengis Khan
Offer surrender; if refused, kill everyone in the town or city
Often spared people with literacy or scientific technical skills
Learned to make siege weapons from Chinese captives
Expansion downwards into Northern Persia
Collapse of Abbassid Caliphate
The Mongol Empire
Northen China to Russia and Hungary
Parts of the Middle East
Eventually divided into four "Khanates" (kingdoms)
Later Khans created a very peaceful empire (as long as you didn't mess with the Khans!)
It was said that a girl could walk the Silk Roads with a golden pitcher on her head and not be molested
Founders of the Yuan Dynasty of China, under Kubilai Khan
The Effects of the Mongol Empire on European History
Controlled Russia, Eastern Poland, Hungary, Romania
Siege warfare changed European warfare and defensive architecture
Controlled the Silk Road trades
Transmission of the Black Death
Often, fear based on legend
The Seljuk Turks and the Origins of the Ottoman Empire
Seljuks were another North Central Asian tribe (see a pattern?)
Worked for the Abbasids and Persian rulers
Established a kingdom that stretched to the borders of the Byzantine Empire
Collapse of the Seljuk kingdom of Rum caused disorder among the Seljuks
The Ottoman Empire
One of the splinter groups among the Seljuks were the Ottomans
Gained territory throughout the crumbling Byzantine Empire in modern-day Romania, Southern Hungary, Serbia, Croatia
Became a big world empire with the capture of Constantinople in 1453
Ottoman Politics and Warfare
Ruled by a Sultan
Strong in Egypt, Southeastern Europe, Northern Arabia, and Persia
Early use of guns and canons by the Janissaries
Problems with succession but still a long-lasting dynasty
Ottoman Achievements
Architecture
Calligraphy
Stability in the Middle East (maybe not what the Europeans wanted...)
Advancements in guns and canons
The Effects of the Ottoman Empire on European History
Ended the Roman Empire (for real this time) in 1453
Battles with Spain, Venice, and other kingdoms, especially in the Eastern Mediterranean
Control over access to the traditional trade routes
Threats to Southeastern Europe—Austrian Empire, etc.
Lesson Completed—Good Job
Use this knowledge to help you with the "Chain Reactions" DBQ
The position of the Mongols and Ottomans had a big effect on Spanish and Portuguese Exploration into The Americas and Africa

What do you need to become a champion? Fast reaction and perfection of skills!
Setting extremely difficult targets, taking the desired height and uplifting the level again - these are the common features of InstaForex and Oleg Taktarov - a sportsman, the world champion of mixed martial arts, an actor and a TV-presenter, a film producer and a writer. A person who achieved everything by himself is a face of the international broker InstaForex.
Speaking about Oleg Taktarov, sport gave him the experience of vital importance, he learned discipline, fast reaction and strong will. These traits of character were most essential for his becoming the winner of the World Ju-Jitsu Championship, as well as of numerous mixed fighting contests in the USA, Japan and Brazil. The attainments in sports and the reputation of the \"Russian Bear\" were a pass for Taktarov to Hollywood. Oleg is sure that everything you do is either to be done perfectly and fully, or not to be started at all.
That is why between training and working the fighter studied in one of the most famous actor academies in the USA \"Playhouse West\", where he learned the basis of acting. This is the way his career of an actor has begun, which now includes over 40 movies shot in the USA as well as in Russia.
Nowadays Oleg Taktarov acts in movies, is a TV shows presenter, heads a producer company, works as a Sports Advisor in the Administration of Nizhni Novgorod (Russia), gives master classes on self-defense to children, and also writes books.
The moral values of the sportsman, his active position in life and readiness to defend his honor triggered InstaForex Company to offer Oleg Taktarov to be the face of the brand, as well as the client of the broker. Thus recently the sportsman has got wise to the currency market, but he has already become an active trader of the company, being confident of scoring another victory in his life on Forex market.

STORYLINE
Russian (b) billionaire Oleg Deripaska, who was publicly scolded this month for failing to pay thousands of his workers, has called on the Russian government to do more to help the crisis-hit economy.
Deripaska said it was up to the government to spur demand if it wanted businesses to survive Russia's worst economic downturn in a decade.
"I would love to see my government fix the economy," he said on Tuesday during a tour of his GAZ car plant in Nizhny Novgorod.
"If the government fix the economy, we will do our job, I'm sure," he added.
Deripaska, Russia's richest man until last year, is estimated by Forbes magazine to have shed some 24 (b) billion US dollars of his fortune during the global financial crisis, when the extent of his debt was revealed.
Tumbling stock markets forced him to cede stakes to creditors in several overseas companies, while at home his business empire - which ranges from cars to metals to construction - struggles under the huge debt burden.
Prime Minister Vladimir Putin took Deripaska to task early this month for failing to pay workers at a shuttered cement factory in the small northwestern town of Pikalyovo.
In a nationally televised meeting, Putin forced Deripaska to sign a supply contract that would allow the factory to resume production.
A few days later, a Siberian pulp and paper mill part-owned by Deripaska agreed to compensate about 2,000 workers who had lost their jobs when the mill was forced to close in October.
Russia's economy has been hit hard by the global financial crisis.
Gross domestic product declined nearly 10 percent in the first quarter and industrial production is down more than 15 percent from a year ago.
