In which John Green teaches you about one of the least funny subjects in history: slavery. John investigates when and where slavery originated, how it changed over the centuries, and how Europeans and colonists in the Americas arrived at the idea that people could own other people based on skin color.
Slavery has existed as long as humans have had civilization, but the Atlantic Slave Trade was the height, or depth, of dehumanizing, brutal, chattel slavery. American slavery ended less than 150 years ago. In some parts of the world, it is still going on. So how do we reconcile that with modern life? In a desperate attempt at comic relief, Boba Fett makes an appearance.

Lord Judge enlightens us on the thrilling historical context of Magna Carta's signing: http://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/magna-carta-the-medieval-context-and-the-part-played-by-william-marshal
Modern understanding of Magna Carta has begun to mythologise the creation and signing of the charter. Lord Igor Judge, Former Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales places Magna Carter in its historical context as simply another Charter in an age when charters "created like confetti". As well as the byzantine politics and open warfare that lead to the creation of Magna Carta, Lord Judge highlights the real hero of 1215, William Marshal, who's tireless campaigning and statecraft lead to the adoption of Magna Carta, ejected the French from British soil and secured the Plantaganet dynasty's hold on the throne
The transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website: http://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/magna-carta-the-medieval-context-and-the-part-played-by-william-marshal
Gresham College has been giving free public lectures since 1597. This tradition continues today with all of our five or so public lectures a week being made available for free download from our website. There are currently over 1,700 lectures free to access or download from the website.

In the medieval and modern periods no European power ever reached the size or dominance the Roman Empire enjoyed in antiquity. In East Asia, by contrast, the periodic reconstitution of universal empire remained the norm. Dr. Scheidel, explains this striking difference and argues that the lack of comparable developments in Europe was a crucial precondition for its unique path of social evolution and economic growth.
Dr. Walter Scheidel is a Dickason Professor in Humanities at Standford University (2008), he received his Ph.D. in Ancient History form the University of Vienna 1993). Dr. Scheidel was born in Vienna, Austria and moved to the United States in 1999. Currently, Dr. Scheidel teaches Ancient History at Stanford University, California. Scheidel's main research interests are ancient social and economic history, pre-modern historical demography, and comparative and transdisciplinary approaches to world history. Scheidel has published three academic monographs and over 180 papers and reviews, and has edited or co-edited twelve other books. He is co-editor of a monograph series for Oxford University Press and was co-founder of the Princeton/Stanford Working Papers in Classics, the world's first online repository for working papers in that field.

The Ashkenazi Jews and the Khazarian Bloodline - The Truth Behind the Bloodline

In “The Missing Link of Jewish European Ancestry: Contrasting the Rhineland and the Khazarian Hypotheses,” published in December in the online journal Genome Biology and Evolution, Elhaik says he has proved that Ashkenazi Jews’ roots lie in the Caucasus — a region at the border of Europe and Asia that lies between the Black and Caspian seas — not in the Middle East. They are descendants, he argues, of the Khazars, a Turkic people who lived in one of the largest medieval states in Eurasia and then migrated to Eastern Europe in the 12th and 13th centuries. Ashkenazi genes, Elhaik added, are far more heterogeneous than Ostrer and other proponents of the Rhineland Hypothesis believe. Elhaik did find a Middle Eastern genetic marker in DNA from Jews, but, he says, it could be from Iran, not ancient Judea.
Elhaik writes that the Khazars converted to Judaism in the eighth century, although many historians believe that only royalty and some members of the aristocracy converted. But widespread conversion by the Khazars is the only way to explain the ballooning of the European Jewish population to 8 million at the beginning of the 20th century from its tiny base in the Middle Ages, Elhaik says.
Elhaik bases his conclusion on an analysis of genetic data published by a team of researchers led by Doron Behar, a population geneticist and senior physician at Israel’s Rambam Medical Center, in Haifa. Using the same data, Behar’s team published in 2010 a paper concluding that most contemporary Jews around the world and some non-Jewish populations from the Levant, or Eastern Mediterranean, are closely related.
Elhaik used some of the same statistical tests as Behar and others, but he chose different comparisons. Elhaik compared “genetic signatures” found in Jewish populations with those of modern-day Armenians and Georgians, which he uses as a stand-in for the long-extinct Khazarians because they live in the same area as the medieval state."
-----------------------------------------------------
It is common opinion that the House of Rothschild rules the world invisibly today, and has done so for two centuries, by creating (i.e. paying off) its own puppets to work on its behalf in the visible world...on many fronts but especially in politics, commerce, technology, education and media outlets. The first Rothschild originated in a part of Germany where rulers were "illuminated" with the so-called "Age of Enlightenment" brought on by Rosicrucians...and by "first" I mean that "Rothschild" was not the true family name; internet websites say that it was "Bauer," meaning "farmer." The Enlightenment has given the world modern democratic politics, the industrial revolution, highly-advanced science and technology, overwhelming knowledge, awesome communication possibilities, but all topped off with grief, plagues, horrors, evil and certain self-destruction because the Creator has either been eradicated from mainstream life, or pushed into corners of society and there degraded into a variety of persons or "somethings" that He is not.
Mayer Bauer changed the name to "Rothschild" (meaning "red shield") for a reason not generally known. Yes, he had hung a red-shield sign/symbol above the door of his shop while still a poor/common family man, but what did it mean? Apparently, the protection and/or advancement of something red...and I don't think it had anything to do with red potatoes. Probably a red people. It just so happens that he was an Ashkenazi Jew, and that Ashkenaz was a region in Magog where the so-called "red Jews" of Khazaria had ruled an empire on the north shores of the Black and Caspian seas. Several voices are now proclaiming that the Rothschilds, and most other Ashkenazi Jews, are descended from the Khazars.
While the Jews of Khazaria had been the small minority among both Christian and Muslim citizens, they ruled the empire absolutely; it had been the law of the land that only Jews could rule! There were two kings, an invisible one called a "khagan," and a visible one called a "beg." Interesting, isn't it, that the invisible Rothschilds are now a few Jews ruling the world.--

Global Problems of Population Growth (MCDB 150)
Throughout prehistoric, written, and recent history, human warfare has been commonplace. Nearly all societies engage in regular or periodic war. In many examples, human warfare has characteristics similar to chimpanzee war: an in-group fights with and kills members of the out-group. This information is not to be misinterpreted as either justifying human violence or considering it inevitable. When it comes to births and fecundity, though, humans are very different from the other great apes. Chimpanzees reproduce once every five to eight years; humans can give birth again within 18 months. It is likely that an increase in male contribution to child rearing allowed this greater fecundity.
