Flagellants of Nocera Terinese - 1960's
Every seven years in the town of Nocera Terinese, Italy, a mysterious rite hundreds of years old still takes place to this day. On Good Friday, Flagellants from the surrounding villages perform the ritual of the battenti. In this tradition, the participants embed shards of glass in pieces of cork, then forcefully drive the makeshift scourges into their bare legs. Bleeding, they jog the route of the Easter procession, enduring the pain and suffering of religious sacrifice in the name of spiritual cleansing. See more films at: www.weirdovideo.com

Pampanga penitents and flagellants (part 1 of 3)
I have long wanted to witness the crucifixion being done in Pampanga. But this is the closest that I experienced - watching the locals carry their crosses along the highways and ending up in the Cathedral of San Fernando, where they whip their backs and get whipped by others as well.

Brgy. Camachiles Immaculate Conception flagellants(Magdarame) 2009 part II
ABOUT THE TRADITION The Philippines is Southeast Asia's largest Roman Catholic nation with a rich cultural heritage that is steeped in tradition. One of these Filipino practices is the observance of Lent and the Holy Week that, for Catholics, is a time for atonement and sacrifice. For Filipinos in Pampanga, the observance is characterized by the senakulo or pabasa which is the chanting of the passion of Christ as read from a book that locals call Pasyon. Other penitents called magdarame (flagellants) carry wooden crosses, crawl on rough pavements and slash their backs before whipping themselves to draw blood, to ask for forgiveness of sins committed, to fulfill religious vows (panata), or to express gratitude for favors granted. On Good Friday each year, Immaculate Conception flagellants start their penitents 3am in bamban groto to Barangay Camachiles Purok I (12pm). Contrary to the Catholic Church's teachings and the commercialization of the event, the fervor for the tradition stays, with the townsfolk sticking to their faith and spiritual practice, constantly remaining pure in their panata which continues to be a source of community solidarity and strength.

"Circle of the Flagellants" by Transiency
Doom Gothic Melodic Death Metal a-la early Paradise Lost / Amorphis. Taken from the 5 songs EP "Manqualm" (Gentle Exhuming Records 2007). In ancient times of decadence The afflicted ones Took a journey across the land Rituals of bizarre Leather whip to mortify the flesh Humans deranged by resignation Brotherhood of flagellants Ease the minds by the law of scourge Soothe the pain for sickness Master of ceremonies Awaiting the certain loss of life Instilling sickening beliefs Into a primitive mankind "Manqualm" is a concept about The Black Death. www.mortalfungus.com http

Flagellants during Holy Week 2009 in Arayat, Pampanga, Philippines
Just a few of the penitents (salibatbat in the local dialect) who participated during the Holy Week 2009 celebration in Brgy. San Juan Baño in the town of Arayat. This took part on Good Friday and thus it's considered "unofficial" activity since the Catholic Church in the Philippines has imposed a recent rule that only allows devouts to carry out their penance up to Holy Wednesday. Issued a few years ago, the edict was meant to dissuade devouts from practicing extreme physical penance. For many of the residents of San Juan Baño, however, salibatbat are part of the tradition prompting them to built makeshift chapel a few meters away from the local church when the latter closes down on Holy Wednesday.
