What is Libertarian Populism?
What is "libertarian populism" and why is it so controversial?
The concept has been discussed widely in the pages of The New York Times, RealClearPolitics, Reason, and elsewhere, but its specifics - and political potential - remain elusive to many in the "Free Minds and Free Markets" movement.
On Tuesday, July 30, Reason's Nick Gillespie moderated a fast-paced discussion with two of the archite

Bernie Sanders' Populism Is Catching the Political World On Fire
Bernie Sanders now has a fairly strong lead in New Hampshire. He’s competitive in Iowa. He’s drawing out major crowds in red states. He is electrifying crowds. And the reason for all of this is because he is speaking to people about issues that they genuinely care about. His message of populism doesn’t rely on basic Democratic talking points. His message truly matters and is resonating dramaticall

In which John Green teaches you about the Gilded Age and its politics. What, you may ask, is the Gilded Age? The term comes from a book by Mark Twain and Charles Dudley Warner titled, "The Gilded Age." You may see a pattern emerging here. It started in the 1870s and continued on until the turn of the 20th century. The era is called Gilded because of the massive inequality that existed in the United States. Gilded Age politics were marked by a number of phenomenons, most of them having to do with corruption. On the local and state level, political machines wielded enormous power. John gets into details about the most famous political machine, Tammany Hall. Tammany Hall ran New York City for a long, long time, notably under Boss Tweed. Graft, kickbacks, and voter fraud were rampant, but not just at the local level. Ulysses S. Grant ran one of the most scandalous presidential administrations in U.S. history, and John will tell you about two of the best known scandals, the Credit Mobilier scandal and the Whiskey Ring. There were a few attempts at reform during this time, notably the Civil Service Act of 1883 and the Sherman Anti-trust act of 1890. John will also get into the Grange Movement of the western farmers, and the Populist Party that arose from that movement. The Populists, who threw in their lot with William Jennings Bryan, never managed to get it together and win a presidency, and they faded after 1896. Which brings us to the Progressive Era, which we'll get into next week!

The far-right Front National emerged from last weekend’s regional elections as the strongest political force in France. Many are now asking: could party leader Marine Le Pen be the country’s next president?
But France isn’t the only country in Europe where right-wing populists are gaining ground. And everywhere, fear is top of the populist agenda: fear of migrants, fear of Islamist terror. The simple answer to complex challenges is: nationalism, more nationalism.
It’s a message that clearly resonates with more and more voters. So how much of a threat do these populist parties pose to Europe?

"En la Brisa" Music by Dan-O at http://DanoSongs.com
Farmers, late 1800s, taken for a ride,
Going broke, with middlemen and railroads on all sides,
Crop prices fall, oh, and the loans took out are harder to repay, (to repay)
The Farmers Alliance would preceed, though they,
Would never quite achieve, they did
Lead to the People's Party needed for that time,
If you want direct election of Senators,
And government ownership of railroads instead of these jerks,
And ending the national bank system is high on your list,
You would be a Populist, you would be a Populist,
If you want a eight hour work day with time to relax,
And think that we need a graduated income tax,
And think the free coinage of silver is a can't miss,
You would be a Populist, you would be a Populist,
What's wrong with gold? There was so much less, the truth be told,
Silver though, would allow more money in the fold,
Through inflation, oh, debtors could finally pay back what they owed,
Creditors won't concede, and Republicans agreed,
Blamed the Sherman (Silver Purchase)Act for the depression at that time
If you think taxes should go up as you earn,
And Senators should not be picked by state legislatures,
If you want these future Amendments before they hit,
You would be a Populist, you would be a Populist,
If you think Williams Jennings Bryan fights for your cause,
And can't help seeing meaning in the Wizard of Oz,
If ending the Gold Standard is what you insist,
You would be a Populist, you would be a Populist,
No "Cross of Gold!"

What is "libertarian populism" and why is it so controversial?
The concept has been discussed widely in the pages of The New York Times, RealClearPolitics, Reason, and elsewhere, but its specifics - and political potential - remain elusive to many in the "Free Minds and Free Markets" movement.
On Tuesday, July 30, Reason's Nick Gillespie moderated a fast-paced discussion with two of the architects of libertarian populism: Ben Domenech of The Transom and Real Clear Politics, and Tim Carney of the Washington Examiner, as well as Jesse Walker of Reason (and author of the forthcoming The United States of Paranoia).
About 1 hour.

His message truly matters and is resonating dramatically.
Ring of Fire’s Sam Seder and Farron Cousins discuss this.

Slavoj Zizek -- Masterclass -- day 4 -- Notes Towards a Definition of Communist Culture -- Populism and Democracy
The master class analyses phenomena of modern thought and culture with the intention to discern elements of possible Communist culture. It moves at two levels: first, it interprets some cultural phenomena (from today's architecture to classic literary works like Rousseau's La Nouvelle Heloise) as failures to imagine or enact a Communist culture; second, it explores attempts at imagining how a Communist culture could look, from Wagner's Ring to Kafka's and Beckett's short stories and contemporary science fiction novels.

On News Point, we analyse the highly populist announcements made by both the RJD as well as the BJP for Bihar in the run up to the assembly elections. We ask whether it is not possible to fight elections in Bihar without populist measures such as announcements of freebies or without playing the caste card.

The Global Center for Advanced Studies is proud to announce a new public series on Resistance, Protest and Social Struggles. This series brings critical theorists, philosophers, sociologists and poets to the GCAS online community for stimulating lectures and discussion on their latest research into contemporary social struggles.
Description:
This lecture is conceptually grounded in Ernesto Laclau's work. I would like to briefly revisit his remarkable trajectory with an eye toward the last decade or so, until his recent and untimely death. The primary focal point is accordingly Laclau's work on populism, but it will require revisiting his earlier works from the 1970s-80's on the Gramscian notion of hegemony. The rise of populist movements - at least conceived as such in everyday common parlance - indeed requires us to pay close attention to Laclau's writings, but this lecture aims to tease out as much his political timeliness as his philosophical contribution.
The earlier work of Laclau - particularly his Hegemony and Socialist Strategy, co-authored with Chantal Mouffe - was rightly but reductively seen as a political "application" of contemporary philosophy and especially Derridean deconstruction. Similarly, his later work is often considered Lacanian. Such philosophical-genealogies, however, undermine Laclau's innovative contributions. His notion of populism, in particular, is irreducible to either deconstruction or psychoanalysis. Better yet, it attends to some of the shortcomings of Lacan and Derrida., which I will tentatively call "critical political narcissism." Without renouncing the now widely shared premise of decentered agency, Laclau's political thought does not stop with a critical denunciation of illusionary mastery. He in fact accounts for the political logic through which the "other" gains a voice.
As much as I will rely on contemporary examples - ranging from the Arab Spring, Occupy, Tea-Party and the rise of the far-right in Europe - to demonstrate that Laclau's insights are second to none, I will also raise a number of critical questions regarding his sophisticated apparatus. Although Laclau is all too careful not to conflate the categories of people and nation, the tie between the two is worth examining. That far-right movements are often associated with populism is no mere coincidence. That this under theorized tie may prevent the emancipatory goals championed by Laclau makes this critical inquiry all the more necessary.
Instructor: Farhang Erfani
Farhang Erfani is Associate Professor of Philosophy at the American University in Washington, D.C., Research Associate at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in South Africa, and Faculty at the Global Center for Advanced Studies. He has previously published Aesthetics of Autonomy: Ricœur and Sartre on Emancipation, Authenticity, and Selfhood (2011), an anthology on Paul Ricœur, Shooting Truth: Philosophy and Iranian Cinema (2012), and scholarly articles on continental political philosophy. His current research is on Derrida and new forms of Eurocentrism as well as the Arab Spring and the Iranian Green Movement.

A documentary Produced and Directed by Hanna Ladoul, Matthieu Cabanes and Marco La Via with the support of the CNC (Centre national du cinéma et de l'image animée)
Airing on La Chaine Parlementaire and TV5 MONDE.
This documentary reveals the existence of a "stereotype" of the populist woman in Europe and the new face of an ideology that's flourishing during this time of crisis. The European dimension of this film is not unrelated to the age of its three directors, born at the beginning of the 90s: it is a scale of measurement that's practically intuitive for their generation. Observation takes on another meaning and raises other questions. But this new perimeter doesn't stop old demons embodied by new icons from the far right from rising up again to threaten the values of democracy.

On News Point, we analyse the highly populist announcements made by both the RJD as well as the BJP for Bihar in the run up to the assembly elections. We ask whether it is not possible to fight elections in Bihar without populist measures such as announcements of freebies or without playing the caste card.

Begun in 2009, the Tea Party movement is generally recognized as fiscally conservative, antigovernment, and a strict interpreter of the U.S. Constitution. The platform is resonating with many Americans. Hear a stellar lineup of panelists discuss how the Tea Party fits into the history of populist movements in American politics, how it may evolve and the long-term impact, and how we can promote civil discourse amid ideological differences.

Debates about contemporary European politics increasingly focus on the putative threat of a resurgent populism. Worried observers sometimes point to the rise of far-right, xenophobic parties, especially in eastern Europe, but ordinary people's backlash against the European Union, throughout the continent, is also often described as taking a populist form. The term populism is generally understood to refer to any ideology that pits a virtuous and homogeneous people against a set of elites and dangerous outsiders who, wrapped together, are seen as depriving the sovereign people of their rights, values, prosperity, identity and voice. Populism is considered the opposite of paternalism, whereby bureaucratic elites know best when it comes to making important decisions and forming social policy. Superficially at least, there appears to be striking evidence of a new populism. In the Nordic countries, populist anti-immigration rhetoric is challenging and unravelling traditional politics. The success of the True Finns party in April this year follows the electoral success of the right-wing Swedish Democrats last September. In Denmark, the Danish People's Party is considered influential and respectable enough to set the agenda on immigration, while Hungarian far-right organisation Jobbik achieved surprising success in the 2009 European Elections and is now the third largest party in Hungary. Elsewhere, support for newly emerging right-wing outfits in Holland, Austria and Italy all suggest the populist moment has arrived. Popular anxieties about Muslim immigration in particular, leading to bans on burqas or minarets in some parts of Europe, appear to fit the same pattern.
Europeans certainly have a lot to be disgruntled about. The economic crisis shows no sign of abating and European leaders appear rudderless and remote to the concerns of ordinary people. Indeed, it's this officious contempt for the masses that some believe is fuelling the current wave of anti-elitism. Rather than forcing Brussels to democratise European politics, however, such developments only confirm elite suspicions that democracy goes hand-in-hand with demagogy and the 'unpredictability' of the masses. Some suggest the threat of populism is exaggerated, and that scaremongering stories about the rise of the far right are a panic response by elites fearful for their dwindling legitimacy, but might anti-democratic measures to contain the perceived problem make the populist backlash a self-fulfilling prophecy?
Should we be concerned about xenophobic parties and charismatic individuals gaining support? Or should we see the new anti-elitism as a positive response to the exhaustion and discrediting of the old political arrangements ? Have left and right been replaced by populists and paternalists? Is populism the revenge of politics or the triumph of reaction? Is populism the new spectre haunting Europe?
