Amira Willighagen and Nijmegen Men's Choir singing See, amid the Winter's Snow (written by Edward Caswall (1814–1878), with music composed by Sir John Goss (1800–1880) ).
Amira was invited as special guest star by the Nijmegen Men's Choir to perform at their annual Christmas Concert in Amira's hometown Nijmegen. The concert was held in the Petrus Canisius Church on December 19, 2015.

Amira donates her proceeds of this concert to her charity foundation Gelukskinders.

Diyarbakır (Ottoman Turkish دیاربکر, Diyâr-ı Bekr; Armenian: Դիարբեքիր, Diarbeqir; Kurdish ئامهد, Amed; anc. Amida; Syriac: ܐܡܝܕ, Amid ) is one of the largest cities in southeastern Turkey. Situated on the banks of the River Tigris, it is the administrative capital of the Diyarbakır Province and with a population of about 843,460 it is the second largest city in Turkey's South-eastern Anatolia region, after Gaziantep. Within Turkey.
The name of the city is inscribed as Amid on the sheath of a sword from the Assyrian period, and the same name was used in other contemporary Syriac and Arabic works. The Romans and Byzantines called the city Amida. Among the Artukid and Akkoyunlu it was known as "Black Amid" (Kara Amid) for the dark color of its walls, while in the Zafername, or eulogies in praise of military victories, it is called "Black Fortress" (Kara Kale). In the Book of Dede Korkut and some other Turkish works it appears as Kara Hamid.
Following the Arab conquests in the 7th century, the Arab Bekr tribe occupied this region, which became known as became known as the Diyar-ı Bekir (landholdings of the Bekr tribe). In 1937, Atatürk had the city renamed Diyarbakır, which remains its current name.

Like many of its Asian neighbors, the Philippines has been site of rapid economic growth over the past two decades. Following a period of martial law and strict control over rural provinces, peasants and farmers began moving to the nation's capital, Manila, in the 1980s looking for better lives. However, many of these people remained on the margins of both society and the city itself. As the population boomed, slums began cropping up. Diyarbakır City Wall "This city had formerly been a very small one, till Constantius while Caesar, at the same time that he built another town called Antinopolis, surrounded Amida also with strong towers and stout walls, that the people in the neighbourhood might have a safe place of refuge. And he placed there a store of mural engines, making it formidable to the enemy, as he wished it to be called by his own name." The Constantius mentioned by Ammianus Marcellinus was a son of Emperor Constantine who was appointed Caesar by his father. Because Constantine died in 337 AD the walls of Amida (today's Diyarbakir) were built before that year. Constantius, after a long struggle with his brothers managed to become the sole ruler of the Roman Empire: he is usually referred to as Emperor Constantius II. The walls of Amida and the town itself were designed in line with Roman practices: they had four gates broadly aligned with the cardinal points. The northern one was called the Armenian Gate because it faced the mountains which separate Upper Mesopotamia from Armenia; after the events which led to the expulsion of the Armenians from Turkey, the name of the gate was changed into the current one. A second historical name for this gate was "Harput Gate" because the road leading to that town started from this gate. Dag Kapisi was open to cars until the 1980s. The western gate is named after Urfa because the road leading to that town starts from this gate. The gate has three entrances; the central one has been modified to allow the passage of large vehicles; that on the left side was decorated in 1183 with an inscription and a relief showing an eagle standing on the horns of the skull of an ox: this relief has become the symbol of today's Diyarbakir. Mardin Kapisi is the southern gate from which the road leading to Mardin started; it had three entrances of which only one remains because the other two were walled up many centuries ago. The existence of three entrances supports the idea that ancient Amida was crossed by two large roads from Dag Kapisi to Mardin Kapisi and from Urfa Kapisi to Yeni Kapi (the eastern gate). Considering the number of columns and pieces of columns which have been employed in Ulu Cami and in strengthening the walls most likely these roads were colonnaded: the central track was reserved to chariots and pack animals and the lateral ones were used by pedestrians. The fourth gate of ancient Amida was most likely a posterula, a small opening in the walls through which the peasants living along the river could enter the town. The Arabs changed the name of the town in the VIIth century; it was then called Diarbekr (the Seat of Bekr) after the name of the tribesmen who conquered it. In the 1920s the name was slightly modified to make it sound more Turkish. "Amida is watered by the Tigris, which passes close to it, making a kind of elbow: (..) but in the very centre of Amida, under the citadel, there rises a rich spring of water, drinkable indeed, but often tainted with hot vapours." Starting from the earliest period, the city had been successively ruled by the Hurri-Mithani, Hittites, and the Assyrians. It was also once the capital city of the Aramean Bit-Zamani kingdom. From 189 BCE to 384 CE, the region to the east and south of present Diyarbakır remained under the rule of the Kurdish kingdom of Corduene. Later, the Romans colonized the city and named it Amida. During the Roman rule, the first city walls were constructed (297 AD) and later, the greater walls were built as per the command of the Roman emperor Caonstantanius-2. After the Romans, the Persians came to power and were succeeded by the Muslim Arabs. It was the leader of the Arab Bekr tribe, Bekr Bin Vail, who named the city Diyar Bakr, meaning "the country of Bakr", i.e. Arabs. Much later, in the Republican era, the city got its current name Diyarbakır, which was derived from the abundance of copper ore that exists here. After a few centuries, Diyarbakır came under the Ottoman Empire and earned the status of the capital of a large province. The city became the base of army troops who guarded the region against Persian invasion. Diyarbakır faced turbulence in the 20th century, particularly with the onset of World War I. The majority of the city's Syriac and Armenian population was moved out from the city. In 1925, the Kurdish population rose in a rebellion against the newly established government of the Republic of Turkey, which was crushed by Turkish forces. http://www.TravelsWithSheila.com After all the "watch your belongings" warnings by guide Oz on the bus because Diyarbakir is not considered "the safest" of cities, the entire Explore group was a little skittish. We would also have to stick together on the walking tour which I detest. The bus pulled up in front of the Grand Guler Hotel, and sure enough, someone tried to snatch a necklace off one of our group. Not an auspicious beginning. But it was followed by a wonderful lunch at Aslan Yemek Salono, just a few doors away. Could have sat there and eaten my way through each and everyone of their displayed offerings. Perhaps, I'm naive. One of my sons is always warning that he's see me with a bag over my head on television one day being executed. However, it was time to begin speed walking through Diyarbakir, the unofficial Kurdish capital of Turkey. -

A 45-minute ferry ride across a small lake created by Ataturk Dam as part of the 3-1/2 hour ride from Hotel Euphrat. Amusing watching the sheer amount of people crammed into a van get in and out. Reminded me of the "clown cars" in the circus with its never-ending stream of clowns appearing. A brief stop at a gas station for tea and toilets that was loaded with huge semis being washed while drivers snarfed down a fast lunch. Three Kurdish men made a fashion statement wearing this year's favorite purple, gauzy scarf. Travels With Sheila doesn't think she'll ever look at purple again without thinking of Southeast Turkey! -

The name of Erbil city has been found in the Somarian transcripts. The city was the main station for The God Ashtar which was the main goddess which was worshiped at that era. The city is a key element for eastern part and Kurdistan Region defining. Geographical Data: Erbil city is located east to Sulaymanyah Governorate and it is only 350 km from Baghdad. The city is surrounded by Nineveh from west and Kirkuk city from east and Iran and Turkey from North. There are two Museum, Erbil citadel museum, which is located in the citadel. It contains about 40 antique parts and anc-ient heritages. The second one is Erbil museum which includes about 5000 ancient parts, which deep-rooted in the history. "This city had formerly been a very small one, till Constantius while Caesar, at the same time that he built another town called Antinopolis, surrounded Amida also with strong towers and stout walls, that the people in the neighbourhood might have a safe place of refuge. And he placed there a store of mural engines, making it formidable to the enemy, as he wished it to be called by his own name."
The Constantius mentioned by Ammianus Marcellinus was a son of Emperor Constantine who was appointed Caesar by his father. Because Constantine died in 337 AD the walls of Amida (today's Diyarbakir) were built before that year. Constantius, after a long struggle with his brothers managed to become the sole ruler of the Roman Empire: he is usually referred to as Emperor Constantius II.
The walls of Amida and the town itself were designed in line with Roman practices: they had four gates broadly aligned with the cardinal points. The northern one was called the Armenian Gate because it faced the mountains which separate Upper Mesopotamia from Armenia; after the events which led to the expulsion of the Armenians from Turkey, the name of the gate was changed into the current one. A second historical name for this gate was "Harput Gate" because the road leading to that town started from this gate.
Dag Kapisi was open to cars until the 1980s.
The western gate is named after Urfa because the road leading to that town starts from this gate. The gate has three entrances; the central one has been modified to allow the passage of large vehicles; that on the left side was decorated in 1183 with an inscription and a relief showing an eagle standing on the horns of the skull of an ox: this relief has become the symbol of today's Diyarbakir.
Mardin Kapisi is the southern gate from which the road leading to Mardin started; it had three entrances of which only one remains because the other two were walled up many centuries ago. The existence of three entrances supports the idea that ancient Amida was crossed by two large roads from Dag Kapisi to Mardin Kapisi and from Urfa Kapisi to Yeni Kapi (the eastern gate). Considering the number of columns and pieces of columns which have been employed in Ulu Cami and in strengthening the walls most likely these roads were colonnaded: the central track was reserved to chariots and pack animals and the lateral ones were used by pedestrians.
The fourth gate of ancient Amida was most likely a posterula, a small opening in the walls through which the peasants living along the river could enter the town.
The Arabs changed the name of the town in the VIIth century; it was then called Diarbekr (the Seat of Bekr) after the name of the tribesmen who conquered it. In the 1920s the name was slightly modified to make it sound more Turkish.

Thousands of Kurds were killed in this attempt.

After all the "watch your belongings" warnings by guide Oz on the bus because Diyarbakir is not considered "the safest" of cities, the entire Explore group was a little skittish. We would also have to stick together on the walking tour which I detest.
The bus pulled up in front of the Grand Guler Hotel, and sure enough, someone tried to snatch a necklace off one of our group. Not an auspicious beginning. But it was followed by a wonderful lunch at Aslan Yemek Salono, just a few doors away. Could have sat there and eaten my way through each and everyone of their displayed offerings.
Perhaps, I'm naive. One of my sons is always warning that he's see me with a bag over my head on television one day being executed. However, it was time to begin speed walking through Diyarbakir, the unofficial Kurdish capital of Turkey.

A brief stop at a gas station for tea and toilets that was loaded with huge semis being washed while drivers snarfed down a fast lunch. Three Kurdish men made a fashion statement wearing this year's favorite purple, gauzy scarf. Travels With Sheila doesn't think she'll ever look at purple again without thinking of Southeast Turkey!

Getting There: Iraqi Kurdistan has two international airports, Erbil and Sulaimany. Currently there are direct international flights from Kurdistan to Dubai, Amman, Beirut and Frankfort.
There is the option to reach to Kurdistan by flying to Turkey: - Purchase a ticket to Diyarbakir (the nearest large city to the Turkish / Iraqi Kurdistan border). Upon arrival to the Diyarbakir airport, you will need to take a taxi to the border (Ibrahim Khalil / Habur). Once you have crossed the Turkish border into Iraqi Kurdistan (Ibrahim Khalil/Habur), you will be greeted by the Kurdish customs officials who will issue you a visa and further information on your destination.
Getting Around Iraqi Kurdistan: Taxi, Bus, and Private Car Hire. If you are mainly interested in staying in a city, taxi is reliable and good value for money. An average charge within a city drive is 2 dollers, as for the Bus it is definitely cheaper. To hire a car with or without driver could be the option for you. You can have your own chauffeur at your disposal throughout your stay. This will offer you the choice to travel short or long distances. A local driver has the knowledge and will advise you throughout your visit.
Where to Visit
Erbil city is the capital of Kurdistan Region Government, the oldest city with continuous residentially. This city is regarded as one of the most deep-rooted Governorate in the area, its history begins before A.D. The city was established 6000 prior to A.D. The name of Erbil city has been found in the Somarian transcripts. The city was the main station for The God Ashtar which was the main goddess which was worshiped at that era. The city is a key element for eastern part and Kurdistan Region defining. Geographical Data: Erbil city is located east to Sulaymanyah Governorate and it is only 350 km from Baghdad. The city is surrounded by Nineveh from west and Kirkuk city from east and Iran and Turkey from North. There are two Museum, Erbil citadel museum, which is located in the citadel. It contains about 40 antique parts and anc-ient heritages. The second one is Erbil museum which includes about 5000 ancient parts, which deep-rooted in the history.
Sulaimani City, One of the major cities in both Kurdistan region and Iraq, situated 385 Km north Baghdad and 198 Km north east Erbil the capital of Iraqi Kurdistan Region. The city sits between two chains of mountains (Goyzha & Glazarda), The city was founded by Ibrahim Pasha in the year 1784. Today Sulaimani has developed in most modern life aspects, hotels, motels, supermarkets & Malls, theatres, restaurants & Parks. From the cultural perspective, Sulaimani is considered to be the capital of Kurdish culture, the famous old Saray situates at the center of the city, while many museums are distributed. Sulaimani Embrace several universities & Educational Institutions both Public & Private, in addition to the American University.
Duhok City is the center of Duhok prefecture (governorate) one of main cities in Kurdistan Region. It situates north Iraq, close to both Syrian & Turkish borders. Duhok city is on plane ground between 2 mountain chains, Shandukha from the south and Spi from the north, while mountain Seen stands on the east. On the west side a plane area could be seen with a tourism environment. The majority of citizens are Kurds; they live peacefully with Chaldean, Assyrian, Armenian and Yazidi minorities. Duhok city is famous with historical sites in which sculptures could be seen on the rocks. Yazidic cultural museum, playground for kids, small zoo. The city embraces Duhok University and many cultural centers. Some most important tourist sites inside the city include Masjed Haj Ahmad considered to be the the biggest Masjed of Duhok and Mart Alaha Church the oldest church in Duhok
Kalar, is the administrative center of Garmyan district. It lies 140 Km southeast of Sulaimani prefecture and 30 Km from the Iranian border. Kalar consists of 27 quarters of a population of about 250,000 residents. Kalar is located on a large plain area embracing many historical sites related to different periods; BC, AD, and Islamic periods. Shirwana Citadel, Pasha Citadel and Christian Canal are examples of AD historical sites. In winter, temperatures may reach 2˚C.

The city is a key element for eastern part and Kurdistan Region defining. Geographical Data: Erbil city is located east to Sulaymanyah Governorate and it is only 350 km from Baghdad. On the west side a plane area could be seen with a tourism environment. The majority of citizens are Kurds; they live peacefully with Chaldean, Assyrian, Armenian and Yazidi minorities. Kalar, is the administrative center of Garmyan district. It lies 140 Km southeast of Sulaimani prefecture and 30 Km from the Iranian border. Kalar consists of 27 quarters of a population of about 250,000 residents. Kalar is located on a large plain area embracing many historical sites related to different periods; BC, AD, and Islamic periods. Shirwana Citadel, Pasha Citadel and Christian Canal are examples of AD historical sites. In winter, temperatures may reach 2˚C.

Buffett annual letter comes amid 'conspicuous' performance lag
Warren Buffett will release his annual letter to Berkshire Hathaway Inc shareholders after a year when its stock price lagged the broader market by the most since 2009, adding to years of underperformance. The letter, due Saturday, is a must-read on Wall Street, filled with his thoughts on investing, life and the Omaha, Nebraska company he has run for five decades. For some, navigating the present is of primary concern, as his shares have lagged the S&P; 500 for the last several years. "His underperformance is getting conspicuous. He must address it," said Doug Kass, who runs Seabreeze Investment Partners in Palm Beach, Florida, and is selling Berkshire shares short. The price of a Berkshire Class A share fell 12.5 percent in 2015, compared with a 1.4 percent gain in the Standard & Poor's 500 including dividends, Reuters data show. That was the worst underperformance since 2009, and between 2009 and 2015, the S&P; gained about 163 percent; Berkshire, just 105 percent. Berkshire looks better when measured by book value, which looks to have gained 7.2 percent in 2015, according to Keefe, Bruyette & Woods analyst Meyer Shields. But since the financial crisis, it, too, has lagged the S&P; 500, based on Shields' book value estimate. Investors will look to see if there is any change in how Buffett views partnerships with investors such as Brazil's 3G Capital, a cost-cutting specialist he teamed with on mergers creating Kraft Heinz Co and Burger King parent Restaurant Brands International Inc. Buffett faced questions at 2015's meeting about 3G's tendency to cut jobs aggressively. Berkshire now owns some 90 businesses, employing roughly 360,000 employees, including the Geico auto insurer, the BNSF railroad, Dairy Queen ice cream, and soon, Procter & Gamble Co's Duracell battery business. Berkshire also owns dozens of stocks. But there, two big Buffett holdings, American Express Co and International Business Machines Corp have recently been dogs. Bill Smead, who invests $2.1 billion at Smead Capital Management in Seattle, said Berkshire's stock price looks "incredibly attractive" at close to 1.2 times book value. Buffett has said Berkshire would buy back stock at that level. One lingering question: Who will take over in coming years, given Buffett is 85, and second-in-command Charlie Munger is 92. Analysts expect full-year operating profit of $17.3 billion, including profit of $2,814 per share in the fourth quarter. -

HOUSTON — Halliburton Co., which provides well-drilling services for oil companies, is cutting 5,000 more jobs as the industry continues to struggle with slumping oil prices. A company spokeswoman said Thursday that the latest cuts will amount to about 8 percent of the Houston-based company’s global workforce. Oil prices have tumbled about 70 percent since peaking above $100 a barrel in mid-2014. That has led to less drilling activity and to widespread layoffs in the oil fields. Halliburton rival Schlumberger cut 10,000 jobs in the fourth quarter. Benchmark U.S. crude settled at $33.07 a barrel on Thursday, up 92 cents or nearly 3 percent. Halliburton spokeswoman Emily Mir said the company was reducing its workforce “due to ongoing market conditions.” Mir said the company regretted the decision, “but unfortunately we are faced with the difficult reality that reductions are necessary to work through this challenging market environment.” When the layoffs are completed, Halliburton will have reduced its workforce by between 26,000 and 27,000 employees since the peak in 2014, she said. Halliburton grew from 58,000 employees in 2010 to more than 80,000 during 2014. It slashed that number to 65,000 by the end of 2015, according to regulatory filings. Halliburton declined to say where the layoffs would fall, saying that such details were competitive information. The company’s operations stretch from the U.S. through Africa and the Middle East to Asia. Last month, CEO David Lesar said that when the company began looking to cut costs, “it started with where we work.” Halliburton consolidated facilities in more than 20 countries and closed operations in two, he said. Lesar said that “2016 is shaping up to be one tough slog through the mud.” He said Halliburton was trying to work with the financially strongest oil companies that will do best when the industry recovers. In November 2014, Halliburton announced that it would buy U.S. rival Baker Hughes Inc. for $34.6 billion. The companies are divesting assets as they seek approval from antitrust regulators, and Baker Hughes also has cut thousands of jobs. Halliburton shares rose 4 cents to close at $32.50 on Thursday. Warren Buffett will release his annual letter to Berkshire Hathaway Inc shareholders after a year when its stock price lagged the broader market by the most since 2009, adding to years of underperformance.
The letter, due Saturday, is a must-read on Wall Street, filled with his thoughts on investing, life and the Omaha, Nebraska company he has run for five decades.
For some, navigating the present is of primary concern, as his shares have lagged the S&P; 500 for the last several years.
"His underperformance is getting conspicuous. He must address it," said Doug Kass, who runs Seabreeze Investment Partners in Palm Beach, Florida, and is selling Berkshire shares short.
The price of a Berkshire Class A share fell 12.5 percent in 2015, compared with a 1.4 percent gain in the Standard & Poor's 500 including dividends, Reuters data show. Halliburton to cut another 5,000 jobs amid oil slump.
HOUSTON — Halliburton Co., which provides well-drilling services for oil companies, is cutting 5,000 more jobs as the industry continues to struggle with slumping oil prices. A company spokeswoman said Thursday that the latest cuts will amount to about 8 percent of the Houston-based company’s global workforce. Oil prices have tumbled about 70 percent since peaking above $100 a barrel in mid-2014. That has led to less drilling activity and to widespread layoffs in the oil fields. Halliburton rival Schlumberger cut 10,000 jobs in the fourth quarter. Benchmark U.S. crude settled at $33.07 a barrel on Thursday, up 92 cents or nearly 3 percent. Halliburton spokeswoman Emily Mir said the company was reducing its workforce “due to ongoing market conditions.” Mir said the company regretted the decision, “but unfortunately we are faced with the difficult reality that reductions are necessary to work through this challenging market environment.” When the layoffs are completed, Halliburton will have reduced its workforce by between 26,000 and 27,000 employees since the peak in 2014, she said. Halliburton grew from 58,000 employees in 2010 to more than 80,000 during 2014. It slashed that number to 65,000 by the end of 2015, according to regulatory filings. Halliburton declined to say where the layoffs would fall, saying that such details were competitive information. The company’s operations stretch from the U.S. through Africa and the Middle East to Asia. Last month, CEO David Lesar said that when the company began looking to cut costs, “it started with where we work.” Halliburton consolidated facilities in more than 20 countries and closed operations in two, he said. Lesar said that “2016 is shaping up to be one tough slog through the mud.” He said Halliburton was trying to work with the financially strongest oil companies that will do best when the industry recovers. In November 2014, Halliburton announced that it would buy U.S. rival Baker Hughes Inc. for $34.6 billion. The companies are divesting assets as they seek approval from antitrust regulators, and Baker Hughes also has cut thousands of jobs. Halliburton shares rose 4 cents to close at $32.50 on Thursday.
