Renata Flores' version of Michael Jackson's 'The way you make me feel' has become a YouTube hit in South America. Something neither she nor her mother expected when they first made the video in Quechua, the language of the Incas .
'Younger people don't speak Quechua because it's seen as an old language spoken by 'uneducated' people' Renata's mother, Patricia, told BBC Trending.
But is their hit song changing this perception? And can a pop song really revive an ancient language by making it cool? We spoke to Renata and her mother about their mission to bring Quechua back to life.

Rick and Melanie Floyd worked for numerous years with the Wanca Quechua translation team in Peru. As they worked, they discovered many fascinating elements of the Quechua language that are not present in the English language. They also gained insight and knowledge of the Bible and their own faith through working with the Quechuas in the translation process. Watch as Rick breaks down the individual pieces of one particular Quechua word for the audience and see if you can guess –– before Rick reveals the actual meaning –– what the English translation of this word is.

It's in the Quechua language - once spoken by the Incas. Millions of people across the Andes speak the language, but there are signs its image is declining among younger people. Can Renata's YouTube hit change that?

Demetrio Roca Wallparimachi offers a traditional prayer in his native language, Quechua. Before he recited the prayer, he explained:
“In 1925, when I was eight years old, my mother took me from my native land of Anta to Cusco . . . .
“During my journey, my mother showed me the sacred spring used for purification before entering Cusco. My mother asked me to remove my shoes, wash my feet, hands, and face, say a prayer . . . . Cusco is a sacred city, still powerful today.”

The presentation will give a short history of the languages, how each connects to native culture and how the languages have survived western influence. A demonstration of songs and dance will explore how languages and cultures interact with each other.
The colonization of the indigenous people was not only political and economic but also weakened their culture and languages to the verge of extinction. The colonizers in their efforts to gain access to land and resources needed to lessen resistance and an efficient way was to prohibit the use of their language. However, the indigenous people managed to continue living their culture through their main manifestations such as music, dances and songs.
The indigenous languages are on the verge of extinction. The statistics show that each day one indigenous language disappears. Ojibway and Runasimi people will demonstrate how they continue maintaining their language and culture. Both presenters are actively involved in the preservation and survival of their respective indigenous languages

On this edition of Independent Sources hosted by Garry Pierre-Pierre, we speak to Haiti expert Jocelyn Macalla about what lies ahead for this impoverished and politically troubled Caribbean nation five years since the devastating earthquake. We’ll visit Elva Ambía, a Brooklyn resident and native Quechua speaker who established the NY Quechua Initiative. It’s a local cultural organization that aims to raise awareness of, and revitalize this fading native tongue. And Sarah Pizon speaks to Charlie Uruchima, a master’s student at NYU’s Quechua program. He co-founded “Kichwa Hatari” in 2014, a radio show in the Bronx that addresses all-things Kichwan, a variant of Quechua.
Taped: 01-12-2014
Independent Sources is where viewers meet the ethnic press. IS engages journalists from New York's ethnic and mainstream media in an insightful discussion of stories covered by ethnic newspapers, TV and radio stations and websites. Each show features an in-depth profile of a news organization or a reporter, along with a news roundup. Independent Sources IS an informative, innovative half hour about New York's fastest growing news sector.
