No doubt the Pakistanis are worried that wary American taxpayers and their congressional representatives may close the checkbook for good when the last U.S. soldier departs from Afghanistan. In the spirit of "perpetual rent-seeking", Pakistani defense officials have recently alighted upon Washington to offer the same tired and hackneyed narratives that are tailored to guilt the Americans into keeping the gravy train chugging along.
Pakistan’s military has complained that it has seen only a portion of this amount as the Pakistan government took a share first. The army grounds that it has become an “army for rent” in the eyes of Pakistanis and has suffered considerable losses while being deprived its economic dues.

How is a competition to find dinosaur bones like lobbying the government?
Back in the 19th century, Edward Cope and Othniel Marsh competed to find dinosaur bones. What started as a healthy competition that drove them to better themselves eventually drove the two scientists to actively work against each other, even to the point of destroying dinosaur bones so that their competitor couldn’t get to them.
This type of competition, taking away opportunities from your competitors or seeking special privileges, is called “rent seeking” by economists. It’s when special interests try to get special treatment for themselves, or harder rules for their competitors, by lobbying the government. Some recent examples include government bailouts for companies like GM and CitiGroup, or direct subsidies for big agribusiness.
Professor Matt Mitchell of the Mercatus Center explains how this rent seeking behavior destroys wealth, much like how unhealthy competition and dynamite destroyed priceless dinosaur bones.

Rent-seeking is about buying influence, which can range from lobbying to corruption. The concepts of rents and rent-seeking are central to any discussion of the processes of economic development. Yet conventional models of rent-seeking are unable to explain how it can drive decades of rapid growth in some countries, and at other times be associated with spectacular economic crises. This book argues that the rent-seeking framework has to be radically extended if it is to explain the anomalous role played by rent-seeking in Asian countries.

The Three Most Important Rules For Investing In The New Normal | Jason Burack
Jason Burack has come up with his three most important rules for investing in The New Normal or as we like to call it The New Economy. Unless you've been holed up in a cave in a state of suspended animation like a hibernating monk, you know that things have changed, both in the US and around the world. The rule of law has eroded and we're living in an era of increasing lawlessness. That's why Jaso

WATCH Michael Hudson, a professor of Economics at the University of Missouri, Kansas City, is a sharp critic of what he considers the "rent seeking" behavior which has come to dominate the world of global finance. Once upon a time, governments regularly expunged debts to prevent the crises and turmoil that overindebtedness caused. But then came the Romans. For the Romans, "a debt was a debt was a debt". And since then, it has become standard fare to enforce debt contracts even when they are unpayable. Hudson now sees a parasitic financial industry that looks only to determine how much wealth it can extract via fees, interest income, and tax breaks, rather than providing capital to increase.
Gonzalo Lira believes that ultra-easy monetary policy will be the demise of the US dollar. In part two of our conversation with Gonzalo, he also explained that his pessimism about the US dollar emanates from his view that the United States has become a "kleptocratic oligarchy" in which investment in capital has become passé and the financialization of the economy benefits a select few.

That's why Jason's rules are so important. Here they are.
1. Politicians and governments can and will change the rules anytime they want perhaps on a daily basis
2. Because of rule #1 people should not go "all in" on investing in any one asset class or investing in only one country or company. At least some real diversification is important to protect against known unknowns or unknown unknowns.
3. People should focus on creating as many possible income streams as they can from owning different investments and businesses to protect themselves to survive and thrive whatever is coming in the future thanks to the myopic stupidity and rent seeking behavior of parasitical central planners, politicians, bankers, government bureaucrats, etc

Mike Enoch and Seventh Son are behind the websites The Right Stuff and Ovenworthy – both political and cultural blogs that are aimed at “reinvigorating dialogue among a disparate and edgy right-wing and inflaming anuses among the childish and regressive left-wing.” Their weekly podcast, The Daily Shoah, infuses edgy humor to touch on current events. Mike and Seventh Son join us to discuss the Cultural Marxist infiltration of libertarianism that has infected and possessed Western civilization. They speak about their separate journeys of becoming fed up with progressivism, and their decision to create a platform, stripped of the politically correct muzzle, to discuss the vast array of issues plaguing the political spectrum. We touch on the economics of fascism, the contradictions of corporatism and the free market, and the competition of rent seeking ethnicities. We look at the tangled web of the social services bureaucracy inviting parasitic intrusion across all Western borders, and the wide chasm of hate speech that makes is all but impossible to rationally discuss the problems tied to mass immigration. In the members’ hour, Mike and Seventh Son illustrate of some the heated "Ovenworthy" topics they have presented in order to instigate the tipping of sacred cows across the mainstream and alternative board. We consider conundrums surrounding voting, multiculturalism, racism, reproductive rates, White guilt, and other predicaments faced by Europe and the US. To round things off, we connect the dots from the forgotten history of Northern Europe to the madness in the Middle East and the collectivist behavior of White western culture that is allowing our motherland to be swallowed up by hostiles.

G. William Domhoff is a research professor in psychology and sociology at the University of California, Santa Cruz. He is the author of Who Rules America? (1967), Bohemian Grove and Other Retreats: A Study in Ruling-Class Cohesiveness (1974), and other books.
A prolific author and Austrian economist, Murray Rothbard promoted a form of free market anarchism he called "anarcho-capitalism."
Bill Evers was a resident scholar at Stanford University's Hoover Institution (and is currently a research fellow there) and also served as Assistant Secretary for the Office of Planning, Evaluation and Policy Development in the U.S. Department of Education from 2007-09.
In this lecture Domhoff, Rothbard, and Evers talk about the "interlocking overlappers" that get together to influence the government, in California and in the country generally. They each spend some time describing what it is that draws businesspeople to market-capturing and rent-seeking behaviors, and take questions from the audience.
