The Belize dollar is the official currency in Belize, formerly known as British Honduras; (currency code BZD) is normally abbreviated with the dollar sign $, or alternatively BZ$ to distinguish it from other dollar-denominated currencies. It is divided into 100 cents. The official value is pegged at 2 BZ$ = 1 US$ since 1978.
The first dollars to circulate in British Honduras were Spanish dollars, some of which were counterstamped with the monogram of a crowned –G-R– (Latin: Georgius Rex, King George.) They circulated between 1765 and 1825 at a value of 6 shillings or 8 pence.
In 1825, an imperial order-in-council was passed for the purpose of introducing the British sterling coinage into all the British colonies. This order-in-council made sterling coinage legal tender, and it set the exchange rate between sterling and the Spanish dollar at $1 = 4s 4d. This exchange rate was supposed to be based on the value of the silver in the Spanish dollars as compared to the value of the gold in the British sovereigns. The realistic exchange rate would have been $4.80 = £1 (equivalent to $1 = 4s 2d), and so the unrealistic exchange rate that was contained in the 1825 order-in-council led to the initiative being largely a failure. Remedial legislation came about in 1838 with a new order-in-council, which did not apply to the British North American colonies due to minor rebellions in Upper and Lower Canada. The 1838 legislation introduced the correct rating of $1 = 4s 2d.

Belize 
i/bəˈliːz/ (formerly British Honduras) is a country located on the north eastern coast of Central America and it is the only country in the area where English is the official language, although Kriol and Spanish are more commonly spoken. Belize is bordered to the north by Mexico, south and west by Guatemala, and to the east by the Caribbean Sea. Its mainland is about 290 kilometres (180 mi) long and 110 kilometres (68 mi) wide.
With 22,960 square kilometres (8,860 sq mi) of land and a population of only 333,200 inhabitants (2010 est.), Belize possesses the lowest population density in Central America. The country's population growth rate of 2.21% (2008 est.), however, is the highest in the region and one of the highest in the western hemisphere. Belize's abundance of terrestrial and marine species, and its diversity of ecosystems give it a key place within the globally significant Mesoamerican Biological Corridor.
Belize has a diverse society, comprising many cultures and languages and it is the only nation in the region with a British colonial heritage but as a part of the Western Caribbean Zone, it also shares a common heritage with the Caribbean portions of other Central American countries. In general, Belize is considered to be a Central American nation with strong ties to both the Caribbean and Latin America. Belize is a member of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), and Sistema de la Integración Centroamericana (SICA).

Wwinning the BEST COMEDY Feature film at the Jamaican Reggae film festival announced for the movie STRANDED N DANGRIGA. This was a big surprise to Producer/Director Ross Jordan considering the film was only intended for the viewing pleasure of a small town in Belize called Dangriga and the local cable television companies in Belize.
STRANDED N DANGRIGA was presented at the Belize International Film Festival in June, 2013 and a Judge, Erika Alexander, also an American actress best known for her roles as Pam Tucker on the NBC sitcom the Cosby show, and as Maxine Shaw on the FOX sitcom Living Single called this Belizean movie “The Hangover Comedy for Belize”, referring to the box office hit “The Hangover” a $35 million dollar budget film. It’s obvious the budget for STRANDED N DANGRIGA was nowhere near The Hangover but it helped Executive Producer Martin A. Gordon and Producer/Director Ross Jordan decide to include subtitles to the Belizean movie STRANDED N DANGRIGA and take it international beyond the boarders of Belize and the Belizean community.
STRANDED N DANGRIGA has been getting great reviews locally and abroad from the general public, movie critics and news outlets. Channel 7 News Belize called it “Thoroughly Entertaining”, Critic: Angie Quidim of That’s My Entertainment called it “a Beautiful Romantic Comedy in a tropical paradise” and “comparable to the Kevin Hart movies with an independent Caribbean twist” the critic: Pamela Stitch called it “an Entertaining Story that will keep you laughing”. Meet Ceratitis capitata This beautiful insect can be a real pest! Its better known as the Mediterranean fruit fly or Medfly.
This insect is one of the worlds most destructive agricultural pests, able to turn a beautiful and nutritious fruit crop into a rotten mess in days.
Around the world, millions of farmers have a fight on their hands to deal with the Medfly and its cousins.
And no one wants to import these pests. If theres any hint that there are fruit flies around, trade stops, as countries protect the health of their plants and consumers.
Some farmers are winning the battle. Belize is the only country in Central America to be officially declared free of Medfly.
Farmers all over Belize can grow and export papayas, peppers and many other crops to major markets like the United States.
In 2001, the US recognized Belize as free of this pest.
The first Medfly infestation in Belize occurred in 1987 in the Stan Creek District in the south of the country. Elsewhere, the Central and Northern districts also paid the price because there was no way to prove their products were safe.

At that time investors were planting papayas in the Cayo district. This was a new commodity that had been admissible into the US. However because there wasnt a comprehensive national surveillance program the entire country was placed under quarantine and we were not able to export to the US.

That affected our economy tremendously in terms of foreign exchange earnings and also in terms of employment for our people.
The Belizean authorities decided to act, with help from international partners.
Monitoring is the first step, the government has to know where Medfly is a problem.

We have Medfly technicians in the field checking on a daily basis, 52 weeks in the year, to ensure that no Medfly is in Belize.
Next comes eradication,

Whenever a Medfly is detected we have an emergency action plan that we immediately implement. The task force convenes a meeting and we decide on a course of actions to be taken.
Then, countries buying from Belize have to know that the fruit are safe.

With this program in place it meant that any commodity that were outside of an infested area could still be exported into the US.

The Right Honorable George Cadle Price, P.C. (15 January 1919 – 19 September 2011), was a Belizean statesman who served twice as the head of government of Belize from 1961–84 and 1989–93. He served as First Minister and Premier under British rule until independence in 1981 and was the nation's first prime minister after independence that year. He is considered to have been one of the principal architects of Belizean independence. Today he is referred to by many as the "Father of the Nation." Price effectively dominated Belizean politics from the early 1960s until his 1996 retirement from party leadership, serving as the nation's head of government under various titles for most of that period.
Born in Belize City in what was then British Honduras, to William and Irene (née Escalante) Price, he entered politics in 1947 with his election to the Belize City Council. In 1949, with the devaluation of the British Honduran dollar he, together with a group of citizens formed the People's Committee. It was the start of the "peaceful, constructive Belizean revolution". On 29 September 1950, he co-founded the People's United Party, which he led for four decades and which was devoted to the political and economic independence of the British colony, then known as British Honduras.

Just before being the second Million Dollar Winner ever in the history of Wheel of Fortune, Autumn became the winner of our popular 'Best of Both Worlds' jungle and adventure package!
With the win last May, Erhard had to land on the one million dollar grand prize wedge during the show, solve that puzzle, make it to the Bonus Round without hitting bankrupt, spin the wheel and land on the million-dollar card and then solve the final puzzle in the Bonus Round.
But Autumn did all of that, making it to the final round. Even here, though, Autumn would have had a 1-in-24 chance at spinning the million dollar prize in the bonus round and would still have to solve the final puzzle, a feat that seemed nearly impossible when only 4 letters out of 12 were showing on the board. The theme was "Thing," and before most viewers could even think of a guess, Autumn was instantly solving the puzzle, which was "Tough Workout."
The first person to win the big prize on Wheel was Michelle Lowenstein in 2008, during the first season the million dollars was introduced. This win seems like beautiful serendipity, though. Autumn is 30, was on Wheel on May 30 during the "Celebrating 30" week of the 30th season. Was it fate?

The animal was found hanging from a tree, with its feet just out of reach of the ground, on Department of Natural Resources land. A mountain biker came across the macabre scene while cycling through the property.
