The University of Sheffield has developed Project Sunshine in order to harness the power of the sun to tackle the biggest global challenge: meeting the increasing food and energy needs of the world’s population in the context of an uncertain climate and global environment change. It unites world-leading researchers from across the faculties of Science, Engineering and Social Science at the University of Sheffield. Together, they are developing new ways to use the Sun's energy more efficiently to increase food production and provide more renewable energy.
Tony Ryan is the Pro-Vice-Chancellor for the Faculty of Science at the University of Sheffield where he was previously the ICI Professor of Physical Chemistry, Head of the Chemistry Department and Director of the Polymer Centre. His research covers the synthesis, structure, processing and properties of polymers and their use in a wide range of applications including energy capture, wound healing, drug delivery as well as paint, soft-furnishings and packaging. He has co-authored more than 300 papers and has an H-index of 58. His 1998 text book, with Arthur Wilkinson, on polymer processing is used world-wide and in 2014 he published a book on sustainability, "The Solar Revolution", co-authored with Steve McKevitt, a social scientist, and it has had great reviews; it puts into context how we come to live on a planet supporting 7 billion people and what we have to do make sure in remains inhabitable (and prosperous) for the foreseeable future.
Tony presented the Royal Institution Christmas Lectures on Channel 4 in 2002 and is a regular contributor to TV, radio and newspapers. He was born in Leeds and has three degrees from UMIST. Married with two daughters, Tony is a creative cook, a keen cyclist and an occasional mountaineer and skier. He was made an OBE in 2006 for 'Services to Science'.

Professor Tony Ryan (OBE) is Pro-Vice-Chancellor - Pure Science for The University of Sheffield he got his three degrees from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology. Before being appointed Pro-Vice-Chancellor he was the ICI Professor of Physical Chemistry and Divisional Director of Research for Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Sheffield, during which time he established the world leading Polymer Centre. The co-author of over 200 papers, and author of a book on Polymer Processing, his research covers the synthesis, structure, processing and properties of polymers. A regular contributor to radio and print media, Tony was the first professor to be made an EPSRC Senior Media Fellow. He delivered the Royal Institution Christmas Lecture in 2002 and in 2006 received an OBE for 'Services to Science'.
Throughout almost all of our species' 100,000 year history, its relationship with the planet has been no different to that of any other animal. All of our energy was provided directly by the sun. Sunlight captured by photosynthesis was converted into food and fuel. 350 years ago everything changed. We began to use coal and oil, the same captured sunshine, but this time millions of years old preserved in fossilised form deep underground. The population exploded. In less than two centuries it doubled in size to one billion people We are now living through our fourth century of exponential growth, but the solutions of the past -- burning more oil, gas and coal; expanding the amount of land under cultivation -- simply won't work any more. Our stocks of fossilised sunlight are dwindling and we are running out of freshwater and places that we can appropriate for farming. Looking to the future, the key question is not simply how many people? but how are they all going to live?
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. Thomas Anthony "Tony" Ryan (2 February 1936 – 3 October 2007) was an Irish billionaire, philanthropist and businessman.
He was a founder of Guinness Peat Aviation (GPA) as well as co-founder of Ryanair with Christy Ryan and Liam Lonergan. Ryanair was believed to be the main source of his wealth in later life: the company is now one of the biggest airlines in Europe and is valued at over 10 billion dollars as of 2012.
Ryan held honorary doctorates from several universities, including Trinity College, Dublin, the National University of Ireland, Galway and the University of Limerick.
Born in Thurles, County Tipperary, Ryan worked for Aer Lingus, before going on to found their aircraft leasing arm, wet-leasing out their aircraft in the quieter winter months.
In 1975, with Aer Lingus and the Guinness Peat Group, he founded Guinness Peat Aviation (later GPA Group), an aircraft leasing company, with a $50,000 investment. GPA grew to be the world's biggest aircraft lessor, worth $4 billion at its peak. But its value dramatically collapsed in 1992 after the cancellation of its planned IPO. Ryan made €55m from the sale of AerFi (the successor to GPA) in 2000. Ryan was a tax exile who lived in Monte Carlo, but also owned a stud farm near his home in Dolla County Tipperary. He was the 7th wealthiest individual from Ireland in the Sunday Times Rich List 2007 with over €1.5bn(£1bn).

The University of Sheffield has developed Project Sunshine in order to harness the power of the sun to tackle the biggest global challenge: meeting the increasing food and energy needs of the world’s population in the context of an uncertain climate and global environment change. It unites world-leading researchers from across the faculties of Science, Engineering and Social Science at the University of Sheffield. Together, they are developing new ways to use the Sun's energy more efficiently to increase food production and provide more renewable energy.
Tony Ryan is the Pro-Vice-Chancellor for the Faculty of Science at the University of Sheffield where he was previously the ICI Professor of Physical Chemistry, Head of the Chemistry Department and Director of the Polymer Centre. His research covers the synthesis, structure, processing and properties of polymers and their use in a wide range of applications including energy capture, wound healing, drug delivery as well as paint, soft-furnishings and packaging. He has co-authored more than 300 papers and has an H-index of 58. His 1998 text book, with Arthur Wilkinson, on polymer processing is used world-wide and in 2014 he published a book on sustainability, "The Solar Revolution", co-authored with Steve McKevitt, a social scientist, and it has had great reviews; it puts into context how we come to live on a planet supporting 7 billion people and what we have to do make sure in remains inhabitable (and prosperous) for the foreseeable future.
Tony presented the Royal Institution Christmas Lectures on Channel 4 in 2002 and is a regular contributor to TV, radio and newspapers. He was born in Leeds and has three degrees from UMIST. Married with two daughters, Tony is a creative cook, a keen cyclist and an occasional mountaineer and skier. He was made an OBE in 2006 for 'Services to Science'.

Before being appointed Pro-Vice-Chancellor he was the ICI Professor of Physical Chemistry and Divisional Director of Research for Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Sheffield, during which time he established the world leading Polymer Centre. The co-author of over 200 papers, and author of a book on Polymer Processing, his research covers the synthesis, structure, processing and properties of polymers. A regular contributor to radio and print media, Tony was the first professor to be made an EPSRC Senior Media Fellow. He delivered the Royal Institution Christmas Lecture in 2002 and in 2006 received an OBE for 'Services to Science'.
Throughout almost all of our species' 100,000 year history, its relationship with the planet has been no different to that of any other animal. All of our energy was provided directly by the sun. Sunlight captured by photosynthesis was converted into food and fuel. 350 years ago everything changed. We began to use coal and oil, the same captured sunshine, but this time millions of years old preserved in fossilised form deep underground. The population exploded. In less than two centuries it doubled in size to one billion people We are now living through our fourth century of exponential growth, but the solutions of the past -- burning more oil, gas and coal; expanding the amount of land under cultivation -- simply won't work any more. Our stocks of fossilised sunlight are dwindling and we are running out of freshwater and places that we can appropriate for farming. Looking to the future, the key question is not simply how many people? but how are they all going to live?
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event.
