Len Thompson (27 August 1947 – 18 September 2007) was an Australian rules footballer, who played for most of his career at Collingwood.

He was recruited by Collingwood from North Reservoir after he had initially trained with, and had been rejected by Essendon. Combining great physical size (200 cm, 95.5 kg) with tremendous athleticism, he provided Collingwood with a formidable around the ground presence.

Thompson played a total of 272 VFL games and scored 217 goals for Collingwood between 1965 and 1978, winning the club's best and fairest award a record 5 times, as well as the 1972 Brownlow Medal.

In 1970 he and Des Tuddenham, vice captain and club captain respectively, refused to play for Collingwood, going on strike to protest at the perceived unfair salaries being paid to lure interstate players east. While this protest resulted in temporary souring the relationship between Thompson and the Collingwood football club, Thompson returned to a leadership position quickly, as vice-captain 1973-7 and captain 1978.

John Greening (born 25 December 1950 in Burnie) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Collingwood in the VFL.

Tasmanian born, Greening moved to Victoria in 1967 aged 16, and attended Northcote High School, after being recruited by Collingwood Football Club. He made his senior debut for the club the following year in a game against Hawthorn and became a regular in the side, playing as a ruck rover, half forward, centreman and wingman.

In 1972, as he was reaching his peak, he was cruelly felled behind play. He would make a brave recovery and his comeback match in 1974 was one of the most stirring and emotional events in the history of Collingwood."

He finished the 1972 season with a 7th placing in the Brownlow Medal, despite only playing 14 games - an average of one vote per game, if the last 'injury game' is included in the calculation. In the Magpie's round 14 (8 July) encounter with St Kilda he had suffered severe cerebral concussion as a result of a hit received during the game. The incident took place after Greening had taken the first mark of the game, he kicked the ball towards Peter McKenna in the goal square and was floored afterwards by St Kilda player Jim O'Dea. Greening, who was comatose for 24 hours and didn't regain full consciousness for several days, was considered lucky not to die or at least be permanently disabled.

Desmond Vincent Tuddenham (born 29 January 1943) is a former Australian rules footballer who played during the 1960s and 1970s. He was a half forward flanker.

Tuddenham was recruited from Ballarat made his VFL debut in 1962, playing for the Collingwood Magpies. His brand of football was fearless and tough, with a habit of grasping the football to his chest with his elbows sticking out dangerously.

In recognition of his superior abilities he was made captain in 1966.

In 1970 he was stood down from this leadership position after he and his vice-captain Len Thompson refused to play for the Magpies, striking to protest unfair salaries being paid to interstate players.

He stayed with the club for a further season before moving to then cellar-dwellers the Essendon Bombers as captain-coach.

He played four seasons for the Bombers before returning to Collingwood for his final two seasons.

In his 252 games career he played in three narrow grand final losses, to Melbourne in 1964, a famous one-point defeat to St Kilda in 1966, and to Carlton in 1970.

Carroll Thompson (born 1960, Letchworth, Hertfordshire, England) is an English lovers rock singer, best known for her work in the 1980s.

Thompson sang in school and church choirs as a girl, but initially studied for a career in pharmacy. In the mid-1970s, she began working as a backing singer at several recording studios after auditioning for Frank Farian's Sugar Cane group. Eventually, Thompson embarked on a solo career, with early successes in the shape of lovers rock singles "I'm So Sorry" (produced by the now London-based Leonard Chin) and "Simply In Love", which both topped the reggae chart in 1981, the same year seeing the release of her debut album. She won two GLR Reggae Awards in 1982, for Best Female Performer and Best Song (for "Hopelessly In Love"). In 1983, she won further awards, again winning Best Female Performer at the GLR awards. She also recorded duets with Sugar Minott ("Make It With You") and Trevor Walters ("Love Won't Let Us Wait"), as well as continuing with regular solo reggae chart hits.

Emma Thompson (born 15 April 1959) is a British actress, comedian and screenwriter. She first came to prominence in 1987 in two BBC TV series, Tutti Frutti and Fortunes of War. Her first major film role was in the 1989 romantic comedy The Tall Guy. In 1992, Thompson won multiple acting awards, including an Academy Award and a BAFTA Award for Best Actress, for her performance in the British drama Howards End. The following year Thompson garnered dual Academy Award nominations, as Best Actress for The Remains of the Day and as Best Supporting Actress for In the Name of the Father.

In 1995, Thompson scripted and starred in Sense and Sensibility, a film adaptation of the Jane Austen novel of the same name, which earned her an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay and a BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role among other awards. Other notable film and television credits have included the Harry Potter film series, Much Ado About Nothing (1993), Wit (2001), Love Actually (2003), Angels in America (2003), Nanny McPhee (2005), Stranger than Fiction (2006), Last Chance Harvey (2008), An Education (2009) and Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang (2010).
