A man is in custody and a woman is in the hospital after a high-speed chase that crossed three counties in the Upstate. Sheila Cole with Anderson Co. Sheriff's office says they got a "Be On The Look Out" from Oconee Co. Monday morning for a white truck in connection with an armed robbery. Deputies spotted the truck around 2:35 p.m. this afternoon and deputies starting attempting to stop the vehicle. Anderson Co. Sheriff Skipper says the chase suspect, Adam Martin was shooting during the chase. The sheriff believes Martin was shooting at the tires of an 18 wheeler to cause it to crash. At one point the truck was ran into the median. It briefly was running in reverse on the interstate. The truck finally stopped at the Clinton Exit in Laurens Co. after being hit multiple times. Sheriff Skipper says once the crash happened, the driver held a gun to his head as he was in a standoff with police. Laurens Co. Sheriff Ricky Chastain says one non-law enforcement vehicle was hit at the off ramp at Exit 2. That person was airlifted to the hospital. According to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, Martin was charged with second degree burglary in April of 2011 and charged with grand larceny in May of 2011. Anderson County Sheriff John Skipper said that the chase began as the result of an armed robbery at a home in West Union Monday morning. Jimmy Watt, with the Oconee County Sheriff's Office said Adam Martin was wanted in connection with the armed robbery. Deputies said Martin had gone to the home of a couple on Murphree Drive in West Union in Oconee County at about 11:15 a.m. to do some yard work. The couple told deputies that Martin asked to speak with them in their living room. They said Martin told them that they were good people and that he was not stable. He then pulled out a handgun and asked for their valuables, according to the couple. The couple said Martin then took about $500 in cash, a box of jewelry. They said he also took all their cellphones and vehicle keys, but he left those items at the bottom of their driveway at their request. Warrants were signed against Martin, who is from Clemson, for two counts of armed robbery, two counts of kidnapping and one count of possession of a weapon during commission of a violent crime. Skipper confirmed that Martin was driving the truck that officers pursued into Laurens County. Skipper said an Anderson County deputy spotted a white Nissan pickup truck matching the description of the one Oconee County was searching for in connection to the robbery. The deputy said as he pursued the truck, the driver fired shots out of the truck. Skipper is asking anyone who may have damage from the shots that were fired to call the Sheriff's Office.
