In 2007 I collaborated with media artist John Oswald to create Qui, a sound installation for 29 voices singing in 29 languages, for the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto. In 2010 I made XXIX, a video counterpart for this sound work, featuring 21 of the original 29 Qui singers, each singing in the language of his or her personal heritage. XXIX premiered as a site-specific video installation, with sound over 21 speakers, at the Royal Ontario Museum in October 2010 as part of Scotiabank Nuit Blanche festival, where it received the People's Choice Award in the Open Call category.

Jim Luce Interviews Famed Indian Film Director Mani Ratnam
Raavanan, the new Indian film produced in both Hindi and Tamil, premiered at the Tenth Annual Mahindra Indo-American Arts Council (MIAAC) Film Festival in New York City this week and I was on the red carpet meeting the biggest names in Bollywood - and beyond - for the occasion.
This morning I had the honor of interviewing India's Steven Spielberg - Mani Ratnam, producer of 22 films and married to mega-star and co-writer Suhasini Maniratnam. Time magazine included Mani's 1987 film Nayagan in its All-Time 100 Best Films. We chatted for 30 minutes in the heart of Manhattan about his latest epic film set in the heart of South India's jungle.

Based loosely on the incredible Sanskrit two thousand-year old legend of Ramayana - "Rama's Journey" - the film is a metaphor for Modern India, set in the Tamil South. His last film was more low-brow: the low brow hit comedy Guru which many of us saw in-flight in 2007.

24 Hours In LAPA
Twenty-four hours in Lapa is a new work based on the true story of a young man who was gunned down in the Crucifix pose after an argument with police on his 30th birthday in Lapa, Rio de Janeiro, May 2007. The piece reflects the rising energy and heightening mood of Lapa over the course of a day and a night and tell the ultimately tragic tale.
Musically this is translated with a fusion of western orchestral writing, Brazilian rhythms and modern production techniques/self-sampling. The work is a Brazilian electro-orchestral suite but plays out like a DJ set, with a gradual increase in tempo and energy over time, reflecting both the accelerating pace of events leading to the young man's death and the heightening mood and palpable rise of energy as day turns to night during a typical evening in Lapa.

ABOUT THE COMPOSER
Tamil Rogeon is a composer, violinist and producer who graduated from the Victorian College of the Arts with a Bachelor of Music Performance in 1997. He trained and performed extensively in New York City’s jazz and club scene and since then, has composed, recorded, performed and toured with the hip-hop ensemble True Live and with the 17-piece electro/big-band ensemble, The Raah Project.
Tamil has recorded with Orchestra Victoria and collaborated with individual artists from across the musical spectrum including Aloe Blacc, The Bamboos and the Mercury prize winning Speech Debelle.
Tamil’s expertise in orchestral and electronic cross-over music has resulted in large- scale commissions from Red Bull and collaborations with the Australian Youth Orchestra.
In May 2012 he composed and conducted Red Bull Beat Suite at Melbourne Recital Centre, an original work performed by a dynamic a string orchestra, two turntabilists and 3 live beatmakers, as part of Red Bull’s cultural program.
As a performer, Tamil has toured extensively. With True Live he has performed at Meredith Music Festival, Big Day Out, Adelaide International Arts Festival, Melbourne Festival, Sydney Festival as well as tours in Europe and Asia. With The Raah Project, he has performed at MONAFOMA, Adelaide International Arts Festival and the Melbourne International Jazz Festival. He has also toured Australia, France and Ireland with the contemporary dance show Sunstruck, choreographed by Helen Herbertson.
In 2010, Rogeon composed the score for the Australian feature film Blame, directed by Michael Henry. Blame was screened as part of the Toronto International Film Festival, the Chicago International Film Festival and in the Cinema des Antipodes section of the Cannes Film Festival.
