Adapting to climate change in Eastern and Southern Africa
In Africa, millions will suffer from climate change impacts on agriculture, water availability, ecosystem services and biodiversity. It's urgent for countries in the region to take action to reduce vulnerability and enhance local communities' capacity to adapt.
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (or IUCN) has been working with three countries to do just that.

These are just a few examples of innovative projects ass

South Africa is not only impressive due to its size but also due to its amazing variety of fascinating scenery. Its paradise-like flora and fauna plus its historic and famous landmarks are totally captivating. Johannesburg is a modern metropolis and with around a million and a half inhabitants is the capital of Gauteng Province and the largest city in South Africa. It was founded in 1886 when gold was first discovered at Witwater Beach. Although European influence is obvious in South Africa the first inhabitants of this fascinating country were of course the various indigenous people of Africa and the village of Lesedi around twenty five kilometres south of Johannesburg provides many insights into ancient Africa’s traditions and dances. Lesedi contains four tiny villages that are inhabited by Zulus, Xhosas and members of the smaller Pedi and Basotho tribes. Close to Pilgrim’s Rest is one of the most beautiful landscapes in South Africa, Blyde River Canyon, a spectacular twenty six kilometre long and eight hundred metre deep canyon where erosion caused by the confluence of the Treu and Blyde rivers has created a number of amazing rock formations. With its many craters Moon Valley is evocative of the lunar landscape. This unusual area was formed during a wet period around four hundred and sixty million years ago by the Swakop River that is one of the longest and widest rivers in Namibia. The region became famous due to a miraculous plant, the Welwitschia Mirabilis, a living fossil that was first discovered in the middle of the nineteenth century and can survive for up to six hundred years. The Etosha National Park in the north of Namibia is one of the largest nature reserves in the world. In the dry winter months hundreds of thousands of animals gather and make this park into Africa’s most populated wildlife area. Man must continue to be fully aware of his responsibility to nature and nowhere more so than in Southern Africa that is one of the last natural paradises on Earth.

My personal video of my experience at the volunteer with big cats project.
Volunteer for projects with VSA http://volunteersa.com/projects/
"This animal lovers program finds itself on a quite sanctuary-like farm, far away from any major city, deep in the very wild and beautiful African bush in the remote North West Province. Volunteers work to better the lives of a number of big cats including lions, white lions, cheetahs, and Bengal tigers, as well as other animals including elephants, zebra, and wildebeest. The amazing staff at this sanctuary works closely with the volunteers to teach about animal feeding, health, husbandry, and what it takes to run an animal reserve. As a volunteer, you will have the opportunity to do loads of incredible activities including horseback safaris, elephant walks, and playing with lion cubs. This truly is an extraordinary wildlife experience." From VSA website

Having finally developed an eye for the quality rock formations of rural Swaziland, world-renowned boulderers Jimmy Webb and Nalle Hukkataival set to work doing what they do best; climbing. Between them they establish numerous problems on the strange, bulb-like boulders that thrust upwards from the Swazi countryside. The rounded, fissured granite of which the boulders are comprised lends itself to technical, slopey climbing; a style that reminds Nalle of the French bouldering area Fontainebleau. Wanting to give the area a problem worthy of the bouldering Mecca it so resembles, Nalle sets to work on 'Project X' a thin, dynamic line that he eventually climbs at the grade of 8B/V13.

In Mozambique, Tanzania and Zambia, IUCN staff members have been collaborating with national governments, local NGOs and selected communities on a pilot project, funded by the government of Finland, called the « Climate Change and Development project », or CCDP.
The project was developed with the aim of ensuring that policies and strategies lead to activities that emphasize the role of water and forests in adapting to climate change in the region.

In Mozambique, Tanzania and Zambia, IUCN staff members have been collaborating with national governments, local NGOs and selected communities on a pilot project, funded by the government of Finland, called the « Climate Change and Development project », or CCDP.

After discovering the first major bouldering venue in Swaziland, Nalle and Jimmy go after the most striking and obvious lines in the country. They find a crag that's close to the clouds, with giant hard problems. In the process, the crew stumbles across evenmore areas and discovers the beautiful countryside around Mbabane. It's not all great climbing and pleasant vistas though - there is a tone of work to be done cleaning and cutting to turn some pretty dense scrub into serviceable bouldering areas.

What's the link between a small company producing leather bags, an entrepreneur transforming local fruit like marula into high value food products, a young female entrepreneur developing her own fashion line of clothes, a small business producing plastic bottles for table water, all in Botswana, and a chain of four star hotels in Mozambique? These are just a few examples of innovative projects assisted by the Centre for the Development of Enterprise (CDE) through the European Development Fund (EDF).
In Botswana, the companies are upgraded through the Private Sector Development Programme (PSDP), a Government of Botswana initiative supported by the Ministry of Trade and Industry, the European Union, the Centre for the Development of Enterprise (CDE) and the Botswana Confederation of Commerce Industry and Manpower (BOCCIM). PSDP Botswana is increasing the capacity of 100 SMEs in the sectors of manufacturing, agro industry, tourism, ICT and public works to deliver competitive products and services as well as guiding them to access finance and larger markets. In Mozambique, CDE partnered with the National Institute for Tourism (INATUR) to develop the grading system for the hospitality sector.
All these enterprises also have one element in common: they are managed by a new generation of entrepreneurs that share a vision: to upgrade their businesses through the development of innovative products and services in order to penetrate local, regional and international markets.

Porcupine : Southern Africa's Largest Rodent | AFRICA'S LITTLE 5
The cape porcupine is a nocturnal species. During the day, the cape porcupine will either build a den, or take shelter in caves, crevices or other holes.
A territorial species, the cape porcupine usually forages solitarily although it can be seen feeding in groups of 2 to 3.
The spines and quills of the porcupine are soft at birth, but then harden.

Scientist and researcher Michael Tellinger discussed archaeological and genetic evidence in support of Zecharia Sitchin's work showing that the Anunnaki created humans through genetic experimentation to serve as slaves for gold mining. Tellinger spoke of a "vast vanished civilization" in Africa-- there are ancient circular structures that cover large parts of the southern half of Africa. These stone ruins, which number in the millions, are associated with the Annunaki, and gold mining operations, he contended. Further, the structures are linked by mysterious channels and roads-- not a single stone structure is unconnected, and they have no doors or entrances, so they were not used as dwellings, he said, adding that he believes an advanced technology using sound frequency was involved with the structures.
One of the structures in South Africa, which bears some similarity to Stonehenge, he dubbed 'Adam's Calendar,' and suggested that it's one of the oldest human sites (at least 75,000 years), and linked to humanity's creation. Interestingly, Tellinger said the African shaman Credo Mutwa was familiar with the site, and referred to it by a name that translates as "Birthplace of the Son," a place where humanity was created by the gods.

Zebra Exodus is a tale of loyalty and sacrifice, of home and exile, of death and new life, in southern Africa's largest zebra population.
From PBS - Each year, far from human eyes, a remote expanse of Botswana's Makgadikgadi salt pans hosts one of Africa's last great spectacles when thousands of striped nomads wander the breathtakingly beautiful but barren landscape. It is only by the grace of isolated summer rains that the zebras can survive here at all. Family groups gather together to follow the rains, driven by a constant search for better grazing on islands of grass that dot the pans. Meerkat families watch the zebras come and go, and families of lions wait for them along their grueling trek, hoping for a chance to bring one down. Their journey is one that is sometimes limited by the fragility of new life, but always made possible by the strong family ties that help animals survive in one of Africa's most surreal landscapes.

The Great Zebra Exodus - Incredible Nature Documentary (HD)
Great Zebra Exodus explores parenthood and the fragility of young life—from zebras to lapwings to meerkats. It#39;s a tale of loyalty and sacrifice, of home and exile, of death and new life, set against the backdrop of one of Africa#39;s most surreal landscapes.
Botswana#39;s Makgadikgadi Pans are home to the largest zebra population in southern Africa, but it#39;s not an easy life. There is no permanent water in the arid saltpans, so thousands of zebras are dependent on isolated summer rains for their survival. Fleeting thundershowers produce islands of grass scattered across the otherwise barren landscape.
When the seasonal storms end, and the dry season begins, the striped nomads start their long trek west to the Boteti River for fresh drinking water. There, water is plentiful, but the zebras must travel further and further from the river to reach adequate grazing before trudging miles back to quench their thirst. It#39;s a grueling routine that will continue until the storm clouds return, the dry season ends, and the zebras can return home where they will welcome newborn foals into their families.

This episode we were joined by Piero Gleijeses, author of Visions of Freedom Havana, Washington, Pretoria, and the Struggle for Southern Africa, 1976-1991 (New Cold War History), to discuss the contents of his new book. Piero Gleijeses is a professor of American foreign policy at the School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University. During the final fifteen years of the Cold War, southern Africa underwent a period of upheaval, with dramatic twists and turns in relations between the superpowers. Americans, Cubans, Soviets, and Africans fought over the future of Angola, where tens of thousands of Cuban soldiers were stationed, and over the decolonization of Namibia, Africa's last colony. Beyond lay the great prize: South Africa. Piero Gleijeses uses archival sources, particularly from the United States, South Africa, and the closed Cuban archives, to provide an unprecedented international history of this important theater of the late Cold War.

Transcript - One of the things that's very important to understand about South Africa is that it is like so many other African countries an artificial entity created by the Brits. The South Africa that we know in its present borders is only 104 years old. And in 1990 when we went through our transition it was only 80 years old. It was the creation of the British Empire. Britain acquired possession of most of the territories of Southern Africa in the nineteenth century in what one historian referred to as a fit of absentmindedness. At the beginning of the century it found itself in possession with a rag bag of territories which were difficult to manage and very expensive. The whole of the nineteenth century had been about the British conquest of Southern Africa. First of the Xhosa people in nine wars of the axe that finally led to in 1856 to a national suicide by the Xhosa people where they decided that they would kill their cattle and destroy their crops on the advice of a prophetess who said that if they did this the British would be driven into the sea. But of course they weren't.
And tens of thousands of Xhosa people died. The second major people who were conquered in the nineteenth century by the Brits were the Zulus. The Zulus had been the dominant tribe in Southeastern Africa after the foundation of their nation by their great King Shaka. The British settled what is now the Natal Province of South Africa and they brought in white settlers and Indians to work on sugar farms. But they were very nervous about this powerful Zulu kingdom to the north of them the Tugela River. And so they found a reason to declare war against the Zulus. And to their enormous surprise at the Battle of Isandlwana in 1878 a whole British army was wiped out, 1500 men. This was just a few years after the Little Bighorn but it's five times as big. And the Zulus wiped out a whole British army. Of course the Brits sent more troops and they were -- they defeated the King Cetshwayo by the next year in 1879. The third people that the Brits conquered were the Afrikaners or the Boers who had been settled in South Africa since 1652. They didn't like British rule so in the nineteenth century they trekked into the interior. They founded two republics, the Republic of the Orange Free State and the Republic of The Transvaal.
But then the people in the Free State made the big mistake of discovering the biggest diamond load in history at Kimberley. So the Brits annexed that. And then in the 1880s the Transvaal Republic made the huge mistake of discovering the biggest gold bearing body in the world, the famous Johannesburg reef. And the result of this was that the British again sought a pretext for war with these two republics. And that led to the Anglo-Boer War in 1899. Now the Anglo-Boer War was the biggest war that the British fought between the Napoleonic Wars and the First World War. They deployed over 438,000 imperial troops in South Africa. They conquered the two territories and then having taken them over at the beginning of the twentieth century they didn't know what to do with them. So they looked around the empire and said oh well look, in Canada we had this dominion. We had a federation there and that's worked very well. We did it in Australia and in different states. We created a federation there. Why don't we do that in Southern Africa. So they did.
But they decided to keep some territories in and some territories out. They included the Zulus and the Xhosas of the new society but they gave control of the new country, the Union of South Africa which was established in 1910 to the whites. Because at that time black people in Africa throughout the world didn't really have political rights. So for most of the twentieth century the big question in South Africa was not the relationship between whites and blacks but the relationship between English speaking whites and Afrikaans speaking whites. And the Afrikaans speaking whites wanted to reestablish their republics. That was the driving force behind the National Party which came to power in 1948. Now they then instituted or they -- not racial segregation. They gave it a new name -- apartheid. And it was straightforward racial domination. But before we become too morally self-righteous, that is what was happening in the rest of Africa, unacceptable indefensible. It was what was happening in the South in the United States at the time. 6 December 2011, the European Union (EU) signed an agreement with the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) for a grant of 470 000 euros (approximately 19 million Mauritian rupees) to assist Small Island Developing States of the Eastern and Southern Africa-Indian Ocean region (ESA-IO) in implementing the Mauritius Strategy for sustainable development. The countries covered are Comoros, Mauritius, Seychelles, Madagascar, and Zanzibar. Small Island States of the ESA-IO region, as in many other regions, are economically and environmentally vulnerable. Therefore, they need the appropriate institutional coordination mechanism to implement a sustainable development strategy.
"The SIDS Unit of UN DESA has a mandate to coordinate and monitor work related to the implementation of the Mauritius Strategy for all SIDS of the world, and is the logical partner of the EU and Indian Ocean Commission (IOC) for the design and implementation of a Monitoring & Evaluation system. The EU grant will reinforce the EU-UN-IOC partnership and enable us to continue joining forces for the sustainable development of the SIDS of the region", said Mr. Alessandro Mariani, Ambassador, Head of the EU Delegation to Mauritius, for the Seychelles and for the Union of Comoros.
The EU grant amounts to 470 000 euros (approximately 19 million Mauritian rupees) and covers the development of a Monitoring and Evaluation system for the implementation of the Mauritius Strategy for SIDS and its implementation at national, regional and international levels. The Mauritius Strategy, which was adopted in 2005, identified twenty priority areas for Small Island Developing States development ranging from environment, climate change, and disaster preparedness to transport and energy.
The Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E;) system to be designed and implemented with the support of UN DESA will benefit the ESA-IO region and SIDS worldwide, and will therefore represent a central element for the monitoring of the implementation of the Mauritius Strategy. The EU grant will help in tracking progress of SIDS of the region towards sustainable development and assess the impact of policies. The SIDS Unit of the UN DESA, which is based in New York, will mobilise international experts and local experts to the region for activities, including pilot projects, which will span over 2 years.
