He finishes with an improvisation on the Djembe.

West African truck drivers spend days, weeks, and sometimes months dealing with corrupt border officials and illegal checkpoints on harrowing delivery trips that should take just a few hours.
--
The truck driver holds a mythic stature in American music, from the hayseed hagiographies of Slim Jacobs and Bobby Sykes to the liner notes of Big Black's Songs About Fucking. There aren't as many country songs about African truckers, but they are no less the virile champions of industry and gluteal fortitude as their US counterparts. On their backs rest the burden of an entire continent's economic development and through their bloodstreams runs a hell of a lot of the continent's HIV.
Trade in West Africa is perennially fucked, partially because the colonial powers of the 19th and early 20th centuries chopped the place up into a pizza pie of nonsensical borders, but also because most post-colonial governments in the area were so unabashedly corrupt we had to coin the term "kleptocracy" to describe them. Driving a semi full of margarine a US state's length to its delivery point often involves passing through 3-4 separate countries and navigating the byzantine customs and immigration processes at each port of entry. Then there are the internal checkpoints manned by local police and customs agents on the lookout for smugglers, or non-smugglers who can be intimidated into coughing up a bribe. Then there's just fuckers who'll pull you over and straight-up rob you. Infrastructure ain't always so hot here, either.
All of which turns shipments which would take a few hours in Europe or America into grueling, day-cum-week-cum-monthlong affairs punctuated by long and unpredictable periods of complete standstill. Which, in addition to wasting fuel and driving up the cost of goods with every unplanned stop, also fuels the sort of boredom that can only be fought by dumping money into the less savory sectors of the economy. Namely booze sales and roadside prostitution. Which is where the AIDS come in.
Intrigued by the African long-haul trucker's dual reputation as the foundational building block of West Africa's would-be robust economy and lotharious Johnny AIDS-leseed, we hitched a ride with a trailer full of soap to see just how hard it is to get from point-A to point-basically-A-and-a-half.

West African Music for Fingerstyle Guitar by Fernando Perez. (Stefan Grossman Guitar Workshop)
In this lesson Fernando Perez presents several tunes from West Africa. Directly learnt from African Jalis (Griots) these are traditional as well as original compositions specially arranged for guitar. Imitating the sound of West African instruments such as Kora, Ngoni or Balafon, Fernando demonstrates unique techniques on the guitar in order to perform the grooves and melodies in a faithful way. All the tunes can be played on nylon or acoustic steel string guitars.
In this lesson you will learn:
- Understanding the sound and techniques of African instruments in order to apply them to the guitar.
- Different techniques imitating Kora scale runs, Balafon breaks, etc.
- Several grooves from Mali, Senegal, Gambia.
- How to properly keep these grooves counting, tapping, and feeling.
- Kora picking style with thumb and index.
- Main scales used in West African music.
- How West African music connects with Blues styles.
- Combining West African styles with your own Blues licks.
- Explanations on how to further develop this music style.
- A West African repertoire full of variety.
Each tune is taught phrase by phrase and played slowly on a split-screen.
Titles include: The Mandinka Song, Massina Madou, Fatoudiob, Sanu, Mali Blues and Kulanjan.

This recipe for a healthy, refreshing, zesty ginger drink from West Africa can be enjoyed either hot or cold, and is an excellent flu remedy.
Ingredients
3 large ginger roots
6 limes
2–3 cups water
1 heaped tbsp peppercorns
1 heaped tbsp raw sugar
Cook's notes
Oven temperatures are for conventional; if using fan-forced (convection), reduce the temperature by 20˚C. | We use Australian tablespoons and cups: 1 teaspoon equals 5 ml; 1 tablespoon equals 20 ml; 1 cup equals 250 ml. | All herbs are fresh (unless specified) and cups are lightly packed. | All vegetables are medium size and peeled, unless specified. | All eggs are 55-60 g, unless specified.
Instructions
Leaving the skin on, chop the ginger into small pieces. Chop lime with rind into small chunks.
In a blender, put more ginger than lime and add enough water to be able to blend it. Taste the mixture as you go and add more lime or ginger as needed.
Strain the mixture through a sieve into a bowl and squeeze remaining juice from the pulp.
In the blender add peppercorns and sugar, then return the strained liquid to the blender and blend until smooth.
Once more strain the mixture through a sieve into a saucepan.
Heat the saucepan and bring the liquid to the boil. As soon as the liquid has reached boiling point take it off the heat and allow to cool.
Pour liquid over ice and add a little cold water and drink!

A top-flight albeit white American West Coast Jazz outfit records an album in Johannesburg in April 1958 - including an extended tribute track to the African Penny Whistle? So, my education continues.
A bunch of students at the University of Natal (The Rag Committee) were doing their annual chairty fundraising drive and somehow persuaded Shank, Claude Williams, Don Prell and Jimmy Pratt to tour South Africa. Concerts were played in Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg. Students Peter Colombine and David Gordon had succeded where professional promoters had failed.
While they were no plans to record, South African fans succesfully urged them to record. Shank called Pacific Jazz in Los Angeles to see if they would pay for an album. Pacific Jazz did not. The South Africans raised the money, and on 23rd April the quartet found themselves in what "was described as a studio".
While on tour Bud Shank was given a pennywhistle as a gift, and so it was that the record's producers pressed him for a pennywhistle number to honor African music. Bop pianist Williamson was presented with a thumb piano, Pratt a West African drum and Prell a Nigerian bamboo harp. The result was A TRIBUTE TO THE AFRICAN PENNYWHISTLE.
The cover photograph of the album - only issued in South Africa - was produced by celebrated South African photographer Peter Magubane who was working at Drum Magazine at the time.
Shank is quoted here as saying of the Pennywhistle tribute:
"I just made up something. It was a blues. The stupid pennywhistle ended up, as I remember, in the key of A-flat, by accident, because nobody down there ever played a pennywhistle with anything other than just a rhythm section, not another keyed instrument. I learned how to play the damn thing while I was making this record. When I first start playing it, I'm squeaking and very tentative and as it goes along, after about 20 choruses, I begin to figure it out."
Jazz Profiles continues: "Goofy as the assignment may have been, the performance has a good deal of charm and Shank seems to take modified pride in having subdued and adapted an instrument not remotely suitable for jazz improvisation. The band returned to their customary instruments for the other six tunes, which include three impressive Shank compositions, CHARITY RAG, MISTY EYES and WALTZIN' THE BLUES AWAY."
The album was later released on some obscure European labels, (some of them pirates). It was relased on the Flamingo Jazz series in the UK in 1961. It was re-lreleased in 1989 on CD on a German label. As far as we can see, all of these are now out of print.(ElectricJive)...

West African cuisine encompasses a diverse range of foods that are split between its 16 countries. In West Africa, many families grow and raise their own food, and within each there is a division of labor. Indigenous foods consist of a number of plant species and animals, and are important to those whose lifestyle depends on farming and hunting.
The history of West Africa also plays a large role in their cuisine and recipes, as interactions with different cultures over the centuries have introduced many ingredients that would go on to become key components of the various national cuisines today.

In 2012 he nabbed a lucrative United Nations contract to transport equipment from South Africa to South Sudan, a country on many countries' embargo list. The other problem: the journey north entails passing through countless checkpoints and dealing with bribe-happy officials and their nonsensical paperwork and regulations.
Photographer and filmmaker Tim Freccia followed around Ian and the guys he hired for this job. "Cowboy Capitalists" documents their attempts to navigate the continent's dangerous roads and bureaucratic chaos.

KanKouran West African Dance Company was founded for the purpose of contributing to the extension of the arts by introducing the essence of traditional African dancing and drumming to audiences; enriching American cultural heritage through the integration of authentic West African performing arts; and promoting intercultural understanding through education and the performing arts.
KanKouran was formed in 1983, in Washington, DC, by Artistic Director Assane Konte and former Director of Music, Abdou Kounta, who grew up together in Dakar, Senegal. After many months of recruiting, training and performing at local venues, the Company presented its first full-length concert, "A Visit to Africa" in 1985. And with that performance, an institution was born. Although many dancers and drummers have come and gone over the years, KanKouran continues under the leadership of its co-founder and Artistic Director, Assane Konte. The Company's success is perhaps best judged by its longevity and by the large number of company and community members who are involved in diverse academic, professional, and entrepreneurial pursuits, and who credit KanKouran with instilling within them the discipline, pride, and commitment to self and community which have made their life pursuits meaningful as well as successful.
This performance took place on January 20, 2013 as part of the Out of Many multicultural festival of music, dance, and story.

Tribes in Africa: African tribes secret and isolated Namibia
African Tribe List
African Tribe List
On this page is a list of a few of the estimated three thousand African tribes. On this African tribe list we have included some of the largest, most interesting, and best known tribal groups. There is a brief description of each tribe. If a name is highlighted you may click on it for more detailed information. We will periodically be adding more information about the people of Africa.
Afar
This tribe can be found on the horn of Africa in Ethiopia, Djibouti, Eritrea, and Somalia. They traditionally have been organized into separate kingdoms, each ruled by its own Sultan. They are pastoralists.
Amhara
The Amahara are Ethiopia's dominant ethnic group. They are mainly found in the central highland plateau of Ethiopia.
Anlo-Ewe
These people can be found in the Republic of Ghana. Before Europeans began their colonization of Africa the Ashanti developed an influential empire in West Africa.
Ashanti
These people of Africa also go by the name Asante. They are found mostly in Ghana and the Ivory Coast. Before the colonization of Africa by the Europeans the Ashanti people created a large empire in West Africa.
Berber
The Berber are the indigenous inhabitants of North Africa (west of the Nile) and have existed in Africa since at least 3000 BC. They are scattered across Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Libya, and Egypt.
Dogon Tribe
These people live in the cliffs of Southeastern Mali south of the Niger near the city of Bandiagara. The Dogon are a major tourist attraction for Mali. This tribe is known for their mask dances, architecture, and wooden sculptures.
Dinka
These people who refer to themselves as Muonyjang are the largest ethnic tribe in South Sudan. They live in the Bahr el Ghazal region in the Nile basin, Jonglei, southern Kordufan and the Upper Nile region.
Fang
The Fang people live in forest clearings in the humid rainforests of Gabon. They are perhaps best known for the guardian figures which they attached to wooden boxes holding their ancestor’s bones.
Maasai
This ethnic group once occupied large areas of East Africa. They are known as great warriors and herders.
Pygmies
These people, known for their small size, live in central and western Africa. There are many pygmy tribes including the Bambuti, Bayaka, Batwa, and the Bagyeli.
San
An African tribe list would not be complete without including the San who are also referred to as Bushmen, Barwa, Sho, Kung, or Khwe. They live in the Kalahari desert and are the oldest inhabitants of South Africa. This group of people were traditionally hunters and gathers but in modern day have become farmers.
Tutsi
This tribe is also referred to as the Watutsi or Watutsi. In Rwanda and Burundi they are the 2nd largest caste. The largest caste is the Hutu and the smallest is the Twa.
Zulu
They are the largest ethnic group in South Africa, numbering about 10 million. Most of the Zulu live in the province of KwaZulu-Natal.
We hope you found this African tribe list interesting. Check back periodically for more information about the people of Africa that we will be adding to this page.
