The criminal sexual-assault charges against Bill Cosby here will stand and will proceed to the next step before a trial, a judge ruled Wednesday, after a two-day hearing.
Montgomery County Judge Steven O'Neill rejected Cosby's motion to dismiss the charges of aggravated indecent assault stemming from a 2004 encounter with ex-Temple University employee Andrea Constand.
O'Neill ruled against Cosby's argument that he had an immunity deal with the then-district attorney not to prosecute in return for testifying fully in a deposition for a civil suit filed by Constand.
Cosby has also argued that current District Attorney Kevin Steele should be dismissed from the case on the grounds of bias and politics: Steele defeated former DA Bruce Castor in the district attorney race in November, and promised to pursue Cosby while criticizing Castor for not prosecuting him 11 years ago.
But O'Neill ruled against Cosby on that matter, too: Steele can continue prosecuting the case, as he found no professional misconduct.
A preliminary hearing in the case is scheduled for March 8, when the focus will be determining whether prosecutors have enough evidence to put Cosby on trial. Among other issues, Cosby will likely try to persuade the judge to rule his deposition testimony inadmissible.

KGW - VANCOUVER, Wash. -- They say it takes a village to raise a child, and this week, a Vancouver family found out how true that saying really is.
It all centers around a photo of Leslie Carpenter’s five year old son Asher’s shoes.
Asher is in kindergarten at Glenwood Heights Primary School in the Battleground School District. He is currently undergoing testing to find out whether he has autism, which can take more than a year.
Since he hasn’t been formally diagnosed yet, his school can’t place him in special education classes, leaving him in a sort of limbo.
“The school can't treat him as an autistic child. They can't give him the services, they can’t do all these different things that kids with that diagnosis can,” Carpenter said.
To add to the stress, Asher has been struggling lately to tie his shoe laces, which has been a big source of frustration for him.
“Every day he would come home with his laces undone, and every single day and I was at a loss with what to do,” said Carpenter.
Then last week, Asher came home from school with something new on his feet.
“I looked down at his shoes and thought, What are those? Where are his laces? I looked down and realized they are special laces,” his mom recalled.
Someone at school had replaced them with special no-tie laces that make it easier for Asher keep his shoes laced up. It was a good deed by a stranger, no strings attached.
“It blew me away, I started crying right then and there. I just broke down,” Carpenter said.
Then, she posted a photo of her son's shoes, along with the story about them, to Facebook and it quickly went viral.
Through her post, she was able to find out who was behind the mystery laces: Asher’s occupational therapist, Carolyn Torricelli.
At the time, Torricelli said getting Asher the laces was second nature and she thought nothing of it. She had no idea the impact it would have on his family.
“That's wild, I think it's great! I didn't expect it and I do appreciate the story. It really touched my heart,” said Torricelli.
For Asher’s mom, it’s bigger than just the laces. Seeing her son’s teachers and school going above and beyond to help Asher while he’s waiting for a diagnosis means the world to her.
“They don't just look at them [the students] as a nine-to-five job. They care about their wellbeing and them growing up. That means everything,” said Carpenter.
Seeing the impact on Asher and his family has been a gift to Torricelli, too. She wants to point out that it wasn’t just her behind the laces, but her colleagues at Glenwood Heights Primary School as well.
“I think it's a gift to be a part of students' journeys and I think it's a gift to be a part of students' successes,” she said.
“I'm not the only one raising Asher, there are a lot of people raising him. To have somebody care that much to go above and beyond is a beautiful thing,” said Carpenter.

Blue Angels pilots are renowned for their flying skills and physical fitness. Their bodies endure as many as 8 g's during the demonstration. "It's very hard forces on your body," Frosch said.
USA TODAY caught up with the Blue Angels at the Great Georgia Airshow in late-October. The Blue Angels agreed to mount one of USA TODAY's specialized camera rigs, designed to capture video in 360 degrees, inside the cockpit of one of their jets. The Blue Angels released the video exclusively to USA TODAY after it was reviewed by the pilots and team.
For more 360-degree videos, check out the VR Stories application for iPhone and Android.
So grab your VR headset and buckle in! You're about to take a ride with the Blue Angels that few have ever experienced!

wn.com/Experience The Blue Angels In 360 Degree Video
Climb aboard Blue Angel 4 in the "slot" position. Situated at the back corner of the Angels' signature diamond formation, you'll see the F/A-18 Hornets flying inches from each other as they execute breathtaking maneuvers. (http://usat.ly/1Yb309N)
*****************

During the second half of Arizona State's 86-68 win over Oregon State, the "Curtain of Distraction" set the bar for student sections across college basketball.
With 13:47 remaining, the "942 Crew" went absolutely wild, and for good reason. The 18-time Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps was there waiting behind the black curtain.
The curtain was pulled back, and Phelps appeared, wearing just his gold medals and a gold Speedo. He stood alongside two students dressed as Chippendales. There have been some epic stunts in the curtain over the years. We've seen a recreation of the "Jael Mary," scary clowns and horses making out -- to name a few.

A little video about the USA today set to the song The USA Today by Hank Williams Jr.
There's homeless on the streets of every city
Big city crime in every little town
There's people makin money off of Jesus
And taxes draggin everybody down
There's politicians kinda stretchin the truth
And farmers are gettin pulled up by their roots
And pushers tellin little kids, "High's the only way" (bull)
Welcome, to the U.S.A today
It's true we've got our problems
Lord knows we make mistakes
And everytime we solve one
Ten others take it's place
But you won't see those refugees headin the other way
Welcome, to the U.S.A today
But there's a million happy homes for every homeless
And opportunity still knocks on every door
Our younger generation's really shinin
Much brighter than they've ever shined before
We've got the right to vote our leaders in
Yeah, and we've got the right to vote them out again
And we're all free to speak our mind and not get locked away
Welcome, to the U.S.A today
It's true we've got our problems
Lord knows we make mistakes
And everytime we solve one

But you won't see those refugees headin the other way

Lead with the future -- rather than with background -- to inform and persuade from the start. That's the first skill in this seminar that was streamed from USA Today headquarters.
The host, Sam Meddis, then deputy managing editor, USA Today, wrote: "A big hit among USA TODAY's newsroom audience, veteran reporters and editors who can be hard to please when it comes to being told how to improve their game. Your presentation not only provided valuable writing tips but it actually made the exercise fun."

In June 2000, USA Today's TV Sports columnist and the paper's initial sports editor; Rudy Martzke was subject of a celebrity roast and charity golf tournament in Biloxi Mississippi at the Beau Rivage Casino Resort. His previous career in basketball front offices with NCAA, ABA & NBA teams in cities such as Buffalo, Miami, St. Louis and roles as a sportswriter for several newspapers provided fodder for much comedy.
Here are some highlight excerpts from the dinner including sports broadcaster Craig Sager's good natured, but none the less well prepared biting attacks. Other roasters on the dais that night included Dr. Jack Ramsay, Cris Collinsworth, Randy Cross, Lee Corso, Ken Stabler, Tom Dorsey, Brent Musburger, Billy Packer, Fred Hickman, Vince Cellini, Spencer Tillman and gracious event MC's Tim Brando and Danny Sheridan.
Sports Illustrated's John Walters' wrote a recap of the event available online here: http://www.si.com/vault/2000/07/03/283889/rump-roast-influential-usa-today-tv-critic-rudy-martzke-was-the-butt-of-jokes-at-a-dinner-in-his-honor
