A sarong or sarung (pronounced [ˈsarʊŋ] in Malay; English: /səˈrɒŋ/) is a large tube or length of fabric, often wrapped around the waist and worn by men and women throughout much of South Asia, Southeast Asia, the Arabian Peninsula, the Horn of Africa, and on many Pacific islands. The fabric most often has woven plaid or checkered patterns, or may be brightly colored by means of batik or ikat dyeing. Many modern sarongs also have printed designs, often depicting animals or plants.
In strict usage, sarong or "sarung" (Malay, Indonesian, "sheath") denotes the lower garment worn by the Malay (and other Maritime Southeast Asian) people, both men and women. This consists of length of fabric about a yard (0.91 m) wide and two-and-a-half yards (2.3 m) long. In the center of this sheet, across the narrower width, a panel of contrasting color or pattern about one foot wide is woven or dyed into the fabric, which is known as the kepala or "head" of the sarong. This sheet is stitched at the narrower edges to form a tube. One steps into this tube, brings the upper edge above the level of the navel (the hem should be level with the ankles), positions the kepala at the center of the back, and folds in the excess fabric from both sides to the front center, where they overlap and secures the sarong by rolling the upper hem down over itself. Malay men wear sarongs woven in a check pattern; women wear sarongs dyed in the batik method, with, for example, flower motifs, and in brighter colors.

DIY Dip Dye Sarong/Pareo, Turquoise and Rust! Here's a quick and easy way to make your own no-sew sheer sarong, using cotton gauze/cheesecloth. Get creative with your colors, you can mix the dyes to create custom hues that fit your personal taste and style. Turquoise and rust is a favorite color combination of mine.
Dylon Dyes I used:
Dye Bath 1:
Dark Brown
Dye Bath 2:

Tulip Red
Sunflower Yellow
Dye Bath 3:
Bahama Blue
Tropical Green
Ocean Blue
Make the gradience any way you want, I loved the look of horizontal stripes for this sarong but you can do vertical, angled or even a random tie-dye effect.
Choosing your size! This is one of the best parts about making your own sarong. You get to choose the proper size that fits you best, so you'll be able to tie it and wear it all kinds of fancy ways.
Choosing fabric. You are the designer, feel free to choose whatever type of fabric you prefer, but make sure to choose one that works well with the dye you'll be using. The gauze/cheesecloth fabric is usually available in natural and white. Either will work, but I recommend using white, it takes the dye more evenly. If you prefer more coverage, try a lightweight or semi sheer cotton, instead of the cotton gauze.

Give your sarong a polished look by hiding the knot.
Step 1: Hold sarong
Hold the sarong behind your back horizontally, an end in each hand, just under your armpits.
Step 2: Grasp sarong
Grasp the sarong several inches above the edge in each hand, forming two bunches of material.
Step 3: Tie bunches
Tie these two bunches together in an unfinished knot, pulling tightly so the fabric is wrapped just above your bust line, close to your chest.
Tip
You can also tie the sarong around your waist as a skirt.
Step 4: Pull corner over knot
Take one of the short, free-flowing corners and pull it beneath, up and over the unfinished knot. Smooth out the material that is now dangling over.
Step 5: Tuck free end
Take the other free end and tuck it into the top of the sarong underneath your armpit.
Step 6: Let sarong flow
Let the rest of the sarong flow.
