It started raining again on December 1, and continued into December 2. By December 1 afternoon, the water in Chembarambakkam had swollen to 3,396 million cubic feet — almost its full capacity. Engineers started to increase the outflow.
By around 10 pm, the water was being released at 29,400 cusec into the Adyar river, which was already in spate, as engineers feared a breach of Chembarambakkam’s boundary. It took three to four hours for the water to reach the city from the reservoir 25 km away, but by midnight of December 2, land in more than a 4-km radius around Adyar, which flows through the heart of Chennai, had gone completely under.

Anakaputhur is a town in Kancheepuram district in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. Though situated in Kancheepuram district, the town is actually a neighbourhood of Chennai. Anakaputhur was once famous for its traditional weaving business, which has declined due to modern competition. The village was featured in "The Tyranny of Control" video of Milton Friedman's "Free to choose". Balaji Nagar is the largest area in the Anakaputhur town. Anakaputhur is developing rapidly with lots of shops, schools, and apartments.
As of 2001[update] India census, Anakaputhur had a population of 31,733. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%.
Anakaputhur is located at 12°35′N 80°42′E / 12.58°N 80.7°E / 12.58; 80.7Wikimapia.

It started raining again on December 1, and continued into December 2. By December 1 afternoon, the water in Chembarambakkam had swollen to 3,396 million cubic feet — almost its full capacity. Engineers started to increase the outflow.
By around 10 pm, the water was being released at 29,400 cusec into the Adyar river, which was already in spate, as engineers feared a breach of Chembarambakkam’s boundary. It took three to four hours for the water to reach the city from the reservoir 25 km away, but by midnight of December 2, land in more than a 4-km radius around Adyar, which flows through the heart of Chennai, had gone completely under.

As several water bodies breached their banks, hundreds of families living along Adyar River and other low lying areas are being evacuated to safer places. With roads and rail tracks submerged in water, the place that houses city’s largest bus stand, have been sealed off by authorities. Traffic is being diverted creating blocks that stretch up to several kilometers from city’s southern gateway.
