The burning test is a simple way to identify fibers. With this test, you can easily distinguish natural fibers from artifical, cellulosic (plant - cotton, flax, hemp etc.) from protein (animal - wool, cashmere, silk) fibers.

In Senegal, cotton fields stretch as far as the eye can see. Yet this natural wealth is increasingly overlooked in favour of used foreign imports as the country experiences a boom in second-hand trading from France.
"The French throw these clothes away? Really? They throw them away?" Fatou Dia, an employee at one of Senegal's second-hand sorting centres, is surprised to learn the origin of their stock. The country is experiencing a boom in second-hand trading, and separating unwanted garments enables Fatou to equip her daughter with school supplies. "I'm buying it little by little. I buy one thing, and then the next thing the next month. In this way, I manage". What is a lifeline to some is a business opportunity to others. "As far as wealth is concerned, human beings are never sated. Because he who does not have his own house is nothing". For Aliou Diallo, this cheap European clothing was a route to a better life. But in a country whose textile industry is rapidly disappearing from view, are these new imports doing more harm than good?

A textile or cloth is a flexible woven material consisting of a network of natural or artificial fibres often referred to as thread or yarn. Textile refers to any material made of interlacing fibres. Fabric refers to any material made through weaving, knitting, spreading, crocheting, or bonding that may be used in production of further goods (garments, etc.). Cloth may be used synonymously with fabric but often refers to a finished piece of fabric used for a specific purpose (e.g., table cloth).
The word textile is from Latin, from neuter of textilis, woven, from textus, past participle of texere, to weave; see text.

Recorded at Sagnlandet Lejre, Historical Archaeological Research and Communication Center, Denmark, August 2012 Land of Legends (Sagnlandet Lejre) The Land of Legends, Centre for Historical-Archaeological Research and Communication (in Danish "Sagnlandet Lejre" and formerly known as Lejre Experimental Centre) is a 106-acre (43 hectare) archaeological open-air museum situated in the Lejre Municipality, few kilometres west of Roskilde (Denmark). Land of Legends was founded in 1964 by ethnologist Hans-Ole Hansen and comprise reconstructions of an Iron Age village and sacrificial bog (200 BC to 200 AD), a Viking market place (900 AD), a Stone Age campsite (5000 BC), an 18th-century farmstead and various grave monuments. The historical artisan workshops (the pottery, the weaver's workshop, the smithy) work to reproduce (pre-)historical handicraft. Gardens, pastures and fields are the natural scenario of activities and reconstructions. At the Land of Legends Lejre, the activities for the public utilizes previous techniques, known from historical documents, archaeological evidence or experimental archaeology. Each summer many families spend a week of their holidays in the Iron Age village, the farm cottages and the Stone Age campsite. They dress in period costume and take on the role of peopling the reconstructed areas, while trying to live using the techniques of the past. Many archaeologists from all over the world come to the Land of Legends to perform their experiments, dealing with a broad variety of subjects and artifacts. For example, the Land of Legends has several times supported the experimental work of Errett Callahan, one of the world's most recognised flintknappers. Recorded at Sagnlandet Lejre, Historical Archaeological Research and Communication Center, Denmark, August 2012 Land of Legends (Sagnlandet Lejre) The Land of Legends, Centre for Historical-Archaeological Research and Communication (in Danish "Sagnlandet Lejre" and formerly known as Lejre Experimental Centre) is a 106-acre (43 hectare) archaeological open-air museum situated in the Lejre Municipality, few kilometres west of Roskilde (Denmark). Land of Legends was founded in 1964 by ethnologist Hans-Ole Hansen and comprise reconstructions of an Iron Age village and sacrificial bog (200 BC to 200 AD), a Viking market place (900 AD), a Stone Age campsite (5000 BC), an 18th-century farmstead and various grave monuments. The historical artisan workshops (the pottery, the weaver's workshop, the smithy) work to reproduce (pre-)historical handicraft. Gardens, pastures and fields are the natural scenario of activities and reconstructions. At the Land of Legends Lejre, the activities for the public utilizes previous techniques, known from historical documents, archaeological evidence or experimental archaeology. Each summer many families spend a week of their holidays in the Iron Age village, the farm cottages and the Stone Age campsite. They dress in period costume and take on the role of peopling the reconstructed areas, while trying to live using the techniques of the past. Many archaeologists from all over the world come to the Land of Legends to perform their experiments, dealing with a broad variety of subjects and artifacts. Land of Legends (Sagnlandet Lejre)
The Land of Legends, Centre for Historical-Archaeological Research and Communication (in Danish "Sagnlandet Lejre" and formerly known as Lejre Experimental Centre) is a 106-acre (43 hectare) archaeological open-air museum situated in the Lejre Municipality, few kilometres west of Roskilde (Denmark).
Land of Legends was founded in 1964 by ethnologist Hans-Ole Hansen and comprise reconstructions of an Iron Age village and sacrificial bog (200 BC to 200 AD), a Viking market place (900 AD), a Stone Age campsite (5000 BC), an 18th-century farmstead and various grave monuments. The historical artisan workshops (the pottery, the weaver's workshop, the smithy) work to reproduce (pre-)historical handicraft. Gardens, pastures and fields are the natural scenario of activities and reconstructions. At the Land of Legends Lejre, the activities for the public utilizes previous techniques, known from historical documents, archaeological evidence or experimental archaeology.

Lowell Massachusetts was founded in the 1820s as a planned manufacturing center for textiles and is located along the rapids of the Merrimack River, 25 miles northwest of Boston. By the 1850s Lowell had the largest industrial complex in the United States. The textile industry wove cotton produced in the South. In 1860, there were more cotton spindles in Lowell than in all eleven states combined that would form the Confederacy. Mind Amongst the Spindles is a selection of works from the Lowell Offering, a monthly periodical collecting contributed works of poetry and fiction by the female workers of the textile mills. The Lowell Mill Girls, as the workers were known, were young women aged 15-35. The Offering began in 1840 and lasted until 1845. As its popularity grew, workers contributed poems, ballads, essays and fiction. The authors often used their characters to report on conditions and situations in their lives and their works alternated between serious and farcical. Lowell Massachusetts was founded in the 1820s as a planned manufacturing center for textiles and is located along the rapids of the Merrimack River, 25 miles northwest of Boston. By the 1850s Lowell had the largest industrial complex in the United States. The textile industry wove cotton produced in the South. In 1860, there were more cotton spindles in Lowell than in all eleven states combined that would form the Confederacy. Mind Amongst the Spindles is a selection of works from the Lowell Offering, a monthly periodical collecting contributed works of poetry and fiction by the female workers of the textile mills. The Lowell Mill Girls, as the workers were known, were young women aged 15-35. The Offering began in 1840 and lasted until 1845. As its popularity grew, workers contributed poems, ballads, essays and fiction. Good fit. I have a 33 inch waist. Has the zipper to to my Dianese jacket. Not sure how the flow will be through the smallish knee vents. I like that they have a zippered closing flap to block the when it is cloud in the morning then can be opened it warms up. My old have a lot more with no flaps to close. I plan to use them on shorter rides that start it is already hot the ones on longer that in the it is cooler here in the pacific northwest up in the afternoon. Should be for trips over the cascades hi-way (20) to eastern washington that out cold (40's) get into the 90's.

Let’s build our own personalized open textile production line The talk is about our project to develop software and hardware tools for a fair and environment friendly garment and textile production and how we break down the locks that exists on every level in the industry from design, to software, machines and distribution. The talk is about our project to develop software and hardware tools for a fair and environment friendly garment and textile production and how we break down the locks that exists on every level in the industry from design, to software, machines and distribution. We want to set up our own personalized open textile production line and offer an alternative to the unethical ways most of our clothes are produced today. At the talk we will present the first successes of this endeavor in our community - Open Source pattern making software, sewing robots, next generation knitting machine upgrades - and challenges that are ahead. Democratizing digital textile production and offers the chance for a fair and environment friendly production of garments and textiles at home and in the industry. Just as 3D printers enable more and more people to become makers we want to enable digital garment makers to create their own clothes, share them online and produce it where-ever they are. Members of our projects include software developers, fashion designers, pattern creators, knitters, textile manipulators, hardware hackers, and even industry experts. We started a FashionTec Working Group about two years ago after the annual Libre Graphics meeting in Madrid. The traditional industry is in a state of complete lock on all levels: * digital fashion design locked to competing proprietary formats and software * production locked to machines of producers accepting formats * distribution lock - locked to existing large distribution channels in order to be a viable business The Free and Open Source community has taught us that it is possible to overcome a complete proprietary lock down. Let’s repeat this success in the textile and garment industry. We need Free and Open Source software, Open Formats and Open machines. With todays development tools successes are just a short step away. A wage you can live on - Textile workers in Cambodia Af film by Helle Løvstø Severinsen. Produced by Clean Clothes Campaign Denmark 2012 for the "No more Excuses" campaign. Conditions for the garment workers in Cambodia are appalling. Low salaries in the industry force workers to live in small shared rooms, work to much overtime and even make the workers suffer from malnutrition. The multiple cases of mass fainting at various factories and the continuous wage strikes is a testimony to this. Also the Cambodia Living Wage Tribunal in February 2012 documented the many problems caused by the low salaries. Read more on http://livingwage.cleanclothes.org Take note: The minimum wage in Cambodia is 61 US$ plus a 'Cost of living' allowance of 5 US$. On July 11th 2012 the Cambodian Labour Advisory Committe agreed to a transportation and renting house allowance of 7 US$ and an attendant bonus of 10 US$. All in all making it possible for the Cambodian workers to earn 83 US$. Far below the modest 131 US$ wage target from the Cambodian Ministry of Labour and even further from the 275 US$ living wage calculation of the Asia Floow Wage Campaign. -

Paj Ntaub: Textile Techniques of the Hmong | 1991 The Hmong, a nomadic group originating in China, migrated through the centuries into Southeast Asian countries including Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar. During the war in Vietnam, Hmong men from Laos were used as a secret army for the United States troops. With the withdrawal of United States troops from Vietnam in the mid-seventies, the Hmong were facing genocide and were forced to migrate into refugee camps in Thailand. From these camps many Hmong families came to America. This video was made in Providence, Rhode Island, were many Hmong families emigrated from refugee camps in Thailand. The first section asks, "Who Are the Hmong". This is shown by maps, sections of story clothes showing recent events in Laos and Thailand, and video images of Hmong in Thailand. Local governance of the Hmong is shown which presents members of the Hmong-Lao Unity Association. The next section asks "What is Paj Ntaub". This is answered by showing examples of Paj Ntaub and giving a general explanation. The final section shows four different Hmong women, demonstrating detailed production of the techniques of embroidery, batik, reverse appliqué, and "Story Cloth" stitchery. In 1909, Penney moved his company headquarters to Salt Lake City, Utah to be closer to banks and railroads. By 1912, Penney had 34 stores in the Rocky Mountain States. The talk is about our project to develop software and hardware tools for a fair and environment friendly garment and textile production and how we break down the locks that exists on every level in the industry from design, to software, machines and distribution.
We want to set up our own personalized open textile production line and offer an alternative to the unethical ways most of our clothes are produced today. At the talk we will present the first successes of this endeavor in our community - Open Source pattern making software, sewing robots, next generation knitting machine upgrades - and challenges that are ahead.
Democratizing digital textile production and offers the chance for a fair and environment friendly production of garments and textiles at home and in the industry. Just as 3D printers enable more and more people to become makers we want to enable digital garment makers to create their own clothes, share them online and produce it where-ever they are.
Members of our projects include software developers, fashion designers, pattern creators, knitters, textile manipulators, hardware hackers, and even industry experts. We started a FashionTec Working Group about two years ago after the annual Libre Graphics meeting in Madrid.
The traditional industry is in a state of complete lock on all levels:
* digital fashion design locked to competing proprietary formats and software
* production locked to machines of producers accepting formats
* distribution lock - locked to existing large distribution channels in order to be a viable business
The Free and Open Source community has taught us that it is possible to overcome a complete proprietary lock down. Let’s repeat this success in the textile and garment industry. We need Free and Open Source software, Open Formats and Open machines. With todays development tools successes are just a short step away. Our talk will give you insights and hopes to inspire more people.

Conditions for the garment workers in Cambodia are appalling. Low salaries in the industry force workers to live in small shared rooms, work to much overtime and even make the workers suffer from malnutrition.
The multiple cases of mass fainting at various factories and the continuous wage strikes is a testimony to this. Also the Cambodia Living Wage Tribunal in February 2012 documented the many problems caused by the low salaries.

Take note: The minimum wage in Cambodia is 61 US$ plus a 'Cost of living' allowance of 5 US$. On July 11th 2012 the Cambodian Labour Advisory Committe agreed to a transportation and renting house allowance of 7 US$ and an attendant bonus of 10 US$. All in all making it possible for the Cambodian workers to earn 83 US$. Far below the modest 131 US$ wage target from the Cambodian Ministry of Labour and even further from the 275 US$ living wage calculation of the Asia Floow Wage Campaign.

The Hmong, a nomadic group originating in China, migrated through the centuries into Southeast Asian countries including Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar. During the war in Vietnam, Hmong men from Laos were used as a secret army for the United States troops. With the withdrawal of United States troops from Vietnam in the mid-seventies, the Hmong were facing genocide and were forced to migrate into refugee camps in Thailand. From these camps many Hmong families came to America.
This video was made in Providence, Rhode Island, were many Hmong families emigrated from refugee camps in Thailand.
The first section asks, "Who Are the Hmong". This is shown by maps, sections of story clothes showing recent events in Laos and Thailand, and video images of Hmong in Thailand. Local governance of the Hmong is shown which presents members of the Hmong-Lao Unity Association.
The next section asks "What is Paj Ntaub". This is answered by showing examples of Paj Ntaub and giving a general explanation.
The final section shows four different Hmong women, demonstrating detailed production of the techniques of embroidery, batik, reverse appliqué, and "Story Cloth" stitchery.
