A "capote" or "capot" is a long coat with a hood.
From the early days of the North American fur trade, both natives and French Canadian voyageurs made wool blankets into capotes, which were perfectly suited to Canada's cold winters. They served as winter outerwear for the habitants and voyageurs of New France and the Métis of the Red River Colony.
The Hudson’s Bay Company also sold capotes, called "blanket coats" or Hudson Bay coats, made out of Hudson's Bay point blankets.
In the early 1600s French sailors traded their capotes to the Micmac in North America and by 1619 the French habitants were also wearing capotes. Fifty years later the habitants wore an altered form of the capote possibly based on the then fashionable justacorps or on the French military uniforms of soldiers stationed in New France at the time such as the Carignan-Salières Regiment. The altered knee length version had no buttons and was worn with a military sash . The habitant capot was no longer the sailors' "capot" nor the soldiers' "capote" but something distinct combining features from both.
Capot is the Quebec French word that described this unique winter jacket. From capot came the verb "encapoter" or "s'encapoter" also in Quebec French .
The Métis capote of the Red River area were made of leather or wool. Those made of leather were often decorated with beads and silk embroidery in floral designs.
The wool capotes were of different colors; blue was preferred by the Catholic Métis and white by the Protestant Métis while grey was worn by both. A sash was worn around the waist and a fire bag was either tucked in the folds of the sash or hung around the neck by a shoulder strap. A fire bag was used for carrying flints, steel and tinder to start a fire as well as tobacco, pipe, knife and other personal items as most capotes had no pockets.

"CHRISTIAN DIOR" Full Show Spring Summer 2015 Paris by Fashion Channel
In the Spring-Summer collection Raf Simons, Artistic Director of Christian Dior, insti- gates an exploration of the past combined with ideas of a near future, democratising the traditions of haute couture by taking them into the realm of the pret-a-porter.
“In the last haute couture collection and show, I was interested in the process of finding something extremely modern through something very historical; particularly through a juxtaposition of different themes,” explains Raf Simons. “For this collection I wanted to continue; I thought there was more to explore. By beginning with the ingredients and the form language of the couture, but going further, I wanted the ready-to-wear to feel more modern, more dynamic, more real – I wanted it to be made available to a wider audience.”
Eschewing strict historical accuracy and embracing an amalgamation in the imagination, the historical sprawl of the collection spans influences from the 18th Century onwards; it takes in 18th Century French royal court attire of both sexes and similarly synthesises and mixes ideas from the uniforms of pilots and astronauts, even school girls and skaters.
As the Robe a la Française – a variation on traditional dresses of the 18th Century and an amalgam of styles mostly worn with a new form of panniers and t-shirt bodices – becomes the Flight Suit a la Française, so too the Justacorps and Gilets – the masculine ‘court coats’ of the 18th Century – segue into the street aesthetic of skater’s shorts and the fluid form of godet dresses. Sinuous, long line coats with an Edwardian origin travel through time and history in heavy washed silk satins and thick calf leather. The transposing of traditional technical details is employed at the service of structural form; bodices become skirts, jackets become blouses, smocking and openwork structures, while the construc- tion of footwear is hand knitted. A repeated layering of traditional silk jacquards appears as a purposeful stratification of history, while new ‘micro jacquards’ take the form of a digital grid, resonating with the traditional Dior Cannage quilting, itself elaborated on and transformed in the leather goods.
