Basically women wear Kira usually worn with a wonju (long-sleeved blouse) inside and a short jacket or toego and men wear Gho.
The Preservation of Bhutan tradition and Culture is known as Driglam Namzha. It is a manner and etiquette as what to wear, how to eat, talk and bow down before the government officials and the clergy. The Driglam Namzha was imposed on all citizens from 1990.
Previously all Bhutanese citizens were required to observe the national dress code, known as Driglam Namzha, while in public during daylight hours. The rule was enforced more rigorously in some districts (dzongkhag) than others. Men wear a heavy knee-length robe tied with a belt, called a gho, folded in such a way to form a pocket in front of the stomach. Women wear colourful blouses over which they fold and clasp a large rectangular cloth called a kira, thereby creating an ankle-length dress. A short silk jacket, or toego may be worn over the kira. Everyday gho and kira are cotton or wool, according to the season, patterned in simple checks and stripes in earth tones. For special occasions and festivals, colourfully patterned silk kira and, more rarely, gho may be worn.
Additional rules of protocol apply when visiting a dzong or a temple, or when appearing before a high-level official. Male commoners wear a white sash (kabney) from left shoulder to opposite hip. Local and regional elected officials, government ministers, cabinet members, and the King himself each wear their own colored kabney. Women wear a narrow embroidered cloth draped over the left shoulder, a rachu.
The dress code has met with some resistance from the ethnic Nepalese citizens living along the Indian border who resent having to wear a cultural dress which is not their own.
Bhutan, officially the Kingdom of Bhutan, is a landlocked country in South Asia located at the eastern end of the Himalayas. It is bordered to the north by China and to the south, east and west by India. To the west, it is separated from Nepal by the Indian state of Sikkim, while further south it is separated from Bangladesh by the Indian states of Assam and West Bengal. Bhutan's capital and largest city is Thimphu.

Traditional village life at a country fair in central Bhutan's Bumthang valley.
The festival takes place at Kurjey Temple, located at Kurjey in the Chokhor valley in Bumthang district. It is a 15 minute drive from Chamkhar town to arrive at the temple grounds.
The history of the temples at Kurjey is associated with Sindhu Raja and Guru Rimpoche. Sindhu Raja invited Guru Rimpoche from Nepal to Bhutan to subdue some evil spirits that had been plaguing the land. Upon invitation, Guru Rimpoche visited Bumthang and meditated in a cave that resembled a pile of Dorjis (stylized thunderbolt used for Buddhist rituals). After subduing the evil spirits and demons, imprints of the Guru's body remained in the rock face. Thereafter, the name came to be known as Kurjey meaning - "Imprint of the body". The Lhakhang is now a blessed site of great historical significance.
There are three main temples at Kurjey. The oldest temple was constructed on the site where Guru Rimpoche meditated by Minjur Tenpa the first Trongsa Penlop (Governor of Trongsa) in 1652.
The second temple was founded by Gongsar Ugyen Wangchuck in 1900 while serving as the 13th Trongsa Penlop. This temple is the most sacred as it was built in the place where Guru Rimpoche left his body imprint.
The third temple was built in the 1990s. It was sponsored by the Queen Mother Ashi Kezang Choden Wangchuck. It houses the images of Guru Rimpoche, King Thrisong Detsen and Pandit Santarakshita.
In front of the temples are Chortens dedicated to the first three kings of Bhutan.
The Kurjey festival is an important occasion not only for the local people of Bumthang but for all Bhutanese. The festival brings together tourists and Bhutanese from all over as it presents the perfect occasion to not only receive blessings by witnessing age-old mask dances but also to enjoy this unique culture whilst basking in the natural beauty of Bhutan's spiritual heartland.

This video shows two local Bhutanese women having a chit-chat in the middle of the road along with their children. The laid-back setting and the happy faces show the reason why Bhutan is called Land of Happiness.
Bhutan (Dzongkha: འབྲུག་ཡུལ་; Wylie transliteration: ʼbrug-yul "Druk Yul"), officially the Kingdom of Bhutan, is a landlocked state in South Asia located at the eastern end of the Himalayas. It is bordered to the north by China and to the south, east and west by the Republic of India. Further west, it is separated from Nepal by the Indian state of Sikkim, while further south it is separated from Bangladesh by the Indian states of Assam and West Bengal. Bhutan's capital and largest city is Thimphu.
Bhutan has a rich and unique cultural heritage that has largely remained intact because of its isolation from the rest of the world until the early 1960s. One of the main attractions for tourists is the country's culture and traditions. Bhutanese tradition is deeply steeped in its Buddhist heritage. Hinduism is the second dominant religion in Bhutan, being most prevalent in the southern regions. The government is increasingly making efforts to preserve and sustain the current culture and traditions of the country. Because of its largely unspoiled natural environment and cultural heritage, Bhutan has been referred to as The Last Shangri-la.
The national dress for Bhutanese men is the gho, a knee-length robe tied at the waist by a cloth belt known as the kera. Women wear an ankle-length dress, the kira, which is clipped at the shoulders with two identical broaches called the koma and tied at the waist with kera. An accompaniment to the kira is a long-sleeved blouse, the wonju which is worn underneath the kira. A long-sleeved jacket-like garment, the toego is worn over the kira. The sleeves of the wonju and the tego are folded together at the cuffs, inside out.

The Preservation of Bhutan tradition and Culture is known as Driglamnamza. It is a manner and etiquette as what to wear, how to eat, talk and bow down before the government officials and the clergy. The Driglamnamza was imposed on all citizens from 1990. The people of different ethnic heritage for example the Lhotsampas (Bhutanese citizens of ethnic Nepali origin - they were not Bhutanese citizens and they were not Lhotsampas) resented this and revolted against this imposition, thereby getting kicked out of the country to the refugee camps. About 20% of the country's population currently live in exile because of this Bhutanization policies of the Royal Government followed by land expropriation and persecution.
Driglam Namzhag is the official manual on Bhutanese etiquette.
To preserve the indigenous Buddha's Teachings as their long-guarded culture and tradition, Menjong Chöthün Tshogpa, a charitable organization was established in 2002 by The Supreme Dharma King or Trulku Jigme Chöda Rinpoche 70th Je Khenpo of Bhutan. The chairman at present is Trizin Tsering Rimpoche who also happens to be the founder of Buddha Dordenma Image Foundation, another charitable organization in Bhutan.

Yangchenphug Higher Secondary School is a Government co-educational school in Thimphu, Bhutan for classes IX-XII. It was founded in 1965 by the third King, His Majesty Jigme Dorji Wangchuck.
Yangchenphug Higher Secondary School is considered the premiere school in Bhutan, leading in the nation in giving quality and wholesome education to its students. The school was started in 1965 by His Majesty the third king, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck. Speaking at the inauguration, the third kind prophesied the future success of the school "I think our new beloved school is going to be one of the jewels of the future of Bhutan or at least we should make it one of the real jewels of the Thimphu valley"Yangchenphug holds the record for being among the best schools in the country for producing top results every year during the Standardised BSCE and BHSEC tests. The school focuses a lot on the academics of the students and therefore hold a collection of awards for Academic Toppers. The awards are meant to encourage the students to take more interest in studies. Although much attention is given to Academics, the school places heavy resources in building the other facets of wholesome education. The school has a reputation being the best school, sports-wise the Western Region of the country, winning the Inter-school sports competitions almost every year. The number of the trophies have declined over the years but the number is quite large all the same with the school winning close to 20 major trophies in the year of 2013.
The school has over 1500 students divided over a range of 4 grades from 9 to 12. The students are represented to the school administration by their class prefects who look after their class and report to the board of Principals.

Neatly attired Bhutanese women wearing their national dress - the kira, cirumambulate the Chimi Lhakhang monastery in Bhutan's Punakha district, with their children and alone. A group of lamas do so, as well. A young school-girl follows suit, spinning the prayer wheels as they walk by.
Chimi Lhakhang, also known as Chime Lhakhang or Monastery or temple, is a Buddhist monastery in Punakha District, Bhutan. Located near Lobesa, it stands on a round hillock and was built in 1499 by the 14th Drukpa hierarch, Ngawang Choegyel, after the site was blessed by the "Divine Madman" the maverick saint Drukpa Kinley (1455--1529) who built a chorten on the site.
In founding the site it is said that Lama Kunley subdued a demon of Dochu La with his "magic thunderbolt of wisdom" and trapped it in a rock at the location close to where the chorten now stands. He was known as the "Mad Saint" or "Divine Madman" for his unorthodox ways of teaching Buddhism by singing, humour and outrageous behaviour, which amounted to being bizarre, shocking and with sexual overtones. He is also the saint who advocated the use of phallus symbols as paintings on walls and as flying carved wooden phalluses on house tops at four corners of the eves. The monastery is the repository of the original wooden symbol of phallus that Kunley brought from Tibet. This wooden phallus is decorated with a silver handle and is used to bless people who visit the monastery on pilgrimage, particularly women seeking blessings to beget children.[3][4] The tradition at the monastery is to strike pilgrims on the head with a 10 inch (25 cm) wooden phallus (erect penis).Traditionally symbols of an erect penis in Bhutan have been intended to drive away the evil eye and malicious gossip.

Travel video about destination Bhutan.
The independent kingdom of Bhutan is located in Southeast Asia, most of it being two thousand metres above sea level and is situated between India in the south and Tibet in the north. Until the 1960’s Bhutan was protected from intruders due to its geographical location and was totally cut off from the outside world. Thimphu is the capital of Bhutan. On the northern edge of the city on the banks of the Wang River is the Pangri Zampa Temple, two impressive white buildings in the centre of a monastery. A school of astrology is located behind an unusually long prayer wall of carved stones surrounded by a forest of cypress trees. The road to Punakha travels across the Dochula Pass from the top of which more than a hundred chortens appear in the mist. A chorten is a container for religious offerings that symbolize Buddha’s consciousness in the Himalayan countries, and are therefore sacred. As quickly as it arrives, the fog vanishes, and the Druk Wangyal Ihakhang Temple suddenly appears out of nowhere. At the end of a valley, about fifteen kilometres from Paro, and located on a hill, is the once proud Drukgyal Dzong Fortress. At its foot, the beautiful village of Tsento nestling against protective rocks and surrounded by fertile fields which are brown or green according to the season of the year. Bhutan is an amazing country has retained its ancient traditions, religious secrets and cultural identity.

There are many treasured sights amidst the green of western Bhutan's mountains.
Among the most awe inspiring, is the Tiger's Nest monastery.
A cultural symbol of Bhutan, This Buddhist temple has a 1200 year history.
The monastery is built around a cave where an ancient guru once meditated.
Today the monastery thrives in the remote mysterious cliff side.
A picturesque center for art, religion and culture.
Rare and unforgettable.

Check out my website for more food http://migrationology.com/ | Have Facebook? https://www.facebook.com/migrationology
Gangtok, located in the Sikkim province of India, is slotted in between Nepal, Bhutan, and Tibet. It's truly a gorgeous area of the country and there is some amazing scenery. Sikkim has a majority Nepali population, so when you're there you'll feel more like you are in Nepal than in India.
The easiest way to get to Gangtok is by taking the Indian train to NJP (which stands for New Jalpaiguri) and then catching a jeep from NJP or Siliguri straight to Gangtok. The journey normally takes about 4 hours and you'll drive along a winding mountain road. The views are spectacular when you're on your way to Gangtok, rising into the Himalaya mountains.
Though I thought just being there and breathing the fresh air was one of the best reasons to visit Gangtok, there are a few things to do in and around town. The MG Marg walking street is the central area of town where you can walk around, go shopping for nearly anything you'd like and eat at a variety of restaurants. Taste of Tibet is an excellent restaurant that's located right along MG Marg and in this Gangtok travel guide, I would highly recommend you eat there when you visit. The Tibetan food dishes are wonderful especially their momos and shapale meat pies. You can also take the Gangtok Ropeway, a cable car that runs from the top of the hill to the bottom of the hill covering a distance of a kilometer. The ride is honestly a little on the scary side, suspended high above buildings and along the side of the mountain.
Once you get to the bottom of the hill you can then visit the Do-Drul Chorten, a Buddhist Tibetan temple where you can walk around. After visiting the temple it's then just a 10 minute walk back to the bottom of the Gangtok Ropeway where you'll be able to catch a ride back up to the center of the town.
There's actually not all that many specific attractions right in Gangtok, but there are many other things to do around the area of Sikkim. When I was there I didn't have a chance to visit the Ranka Monastery, a Buddhist Temple that's located about a 45 minute jeep drive away from Gangtok. It was a pleasant day trip and they served some seriously delicious local Sikkimese Tibetan food. If you visit northern India, Gangtok is a worthwhile stop, you'll surely enjoy it!

Travel video about destination Tibet.
Tibet is a relatively little known and mysterious land of snow high up in the Himalayas that borders Nepal, Bhutan ad India. It is protected by the highest mountains in the world and is a region that has developed a unique society whose philosophy, art and religious faith have earned much interest and respect.Lhasa is the capital of Tibet and also its largest city. The Barkhor Road extends for eight hundred metres around the Jokhang Temple and nearby Tsuklakhang Square. For the faithful a visit to the Jokhang Temple is the highlight of a long and arduous pilgrimage and the Dalai Lama once sat in its inner courtyard during the monks’ annual final examination, which was also a splendid festive event. On the other side of the Chakpori, a small mountain opposite Potala, is the seldom visited Sang Gya Thong Ku Temple that is somewhat hidden away and therefore off the tourist trail. This ‘temple of a thousand images of god’ is nevertheless very popular among devout Buddhists and is a place of silent prayer. The Yarlung Valley is full of history such as possessing the oldest field in Tibet, as well as the oldest village that is located at the foot of the country’s oldest fortress, Yom Bu La Khang, the rock palace of the country’s first mystic king. One of the largest monuments in Tibetan architecture is the unique Kumbum Chörten, a three-dimensional mandala that can be entered. Eyes decorate the upper part of the Stupa. The ritual walkabout begins on the lowest level with simple deities then follows the entire Pantheon of Tibet, immortalised in both sculptures and wall paintings. Despite Chinese influence, Tibet is still a religiously devout country with a fascinating monastery culture and amazing natural scenery. Tashi Delek! Happiness and Blessings! On the “roof of the world” one is always close to the gods…!...

Video with images of a religious ceremony during the tsechu festival at Trashigang dzong in the east of Bhutan. The annual festival lasts for several days and starts each morning with the unfolding of a thondrol or huge thangka. On the first morning a committee prepares the unfolding of an old version of the thondrol. It depicts an image of guru Rinpoche a reference to Padmasambhava. He is regarded as the second Buddha who brought tantric Buddhism to Bhutan in the eighth century AD.
The ceremony starts with a committee of men who get the thondrol from its depository. They make preparations for unfolding the thondrol accompanied by a chorus of women singing religious chants and the sound of conch shell trumpets, metal horns up to three meters long, large standing drums and cymbals, hand bells, temple bells, gongs, and wooden sticks. Monks and devotees who gather to witness this occasion offer obeisance in front of the thondrol seeking blessings. Before sunrise, the painting is rolled up and kept in the dzong before it is displayed again one year later.
The devotees wear traditional dress. The men wear a kho which is a coat down to the knees. It is asymmetrically closed with a kera or belt. The coat hangs wide over the belt and serves as pouch for all sorts of things like a purse and a dozum or knife. Under the kho the men wear long or short pants which depends on the temperature of the season. Traditional footwear is knee-high embroidered leather booths. A kabney or scarf over the left shoulder identifies a person's rank. White for example is for citizens and blue is for members of the Royal Advisory Council.
The women wear a kira or jumper with two koma or round buckles at the neck to hold their dress together. The kira is fastened at the waist with a belt that may be of either silver or cloth. At the waist The jumper is usually a long rectangular piece of dress down to the ankles with geometric motives or Buddhist symbols. Under the kira they wear a wonju or silk blouse. On top of their dress they wear a toego which is a short jacket without buttons. They have a rachu or cloth sash over their left shoulder.

Bhutan limits the number of tourists in the country and thus, it has a small handicraft industry too. You can buy handicrafts such as carpets, colorful masks, jewellery, silver, bronzes, hand-woven bamboo items and Bhutanese wooden products at Thimphu as souvenirs and gifts for your family and friends though. Hand made wooden bowls or dappa are ethnic and practical souvenirs. The two halves of these bowls fit together so tightly that they can be used to carry cooked food and you can use them as salad or cookie bowls at home. Dappa can be purchased anywhere in Bhutan but is considered a speciality of the Trashi Yangtse region. Similarly, bamboo reeds are woven into small baskets and are used just like dappas. They are the specialty of the south of Bhutan and come in beautiful designs.
Unique Himalayan beads that are oblong in shape and available in brown and cream colors are known as Dzi beads. Jewellery made of Dzi beads can be ver expensive and is considered precious, ever since wealthy Taiwanese people took a liking to them. There are cheaper fake versions of these beads and their jewellery is available in the market too. Bhutan is famous for its stamps and has a worldwide reputation as the 'philatelist's paradise'. Bhutanese stamps have detailed images and bright and vibrant colors. Recently, collectors have been attracted to the series of Bhutanese stamps that pay tribute to Walt Disney characters. Other famous stamps that have been rated high by the philatelists include the commemorative stamp for the 1994 World Cup and the stamp that marked German Unification.
You can visit the Central Post Office at Thimphu and look at the collections and 'First-Day Issues' on sale there. Even if you are not into stamp collecting, the beautiful stamp collections in Stamp Collector's books can make unique presents for someone back home. You can also buy rich fabric; silk, handmade paper products, Buddhist paintings and thangkas or religious paintings at Thimphu. You can find cheaper carpets at Tongsa, which is the best place to buy yatras too. Yatras or Yethras are colorful strips of woolen cloth, dyed with natural colors, that is used to make different fabric items ranging from blankets to jackets, bags and rugs. It is considered to be the specialty of the Jakar area. Bhutanese woven cloth is famous all over the world and can be used to make apparels, wall hangings, tablemats and rugs.
Bhumthang honey, jams and comfitures are loved by connoisseurs and make original presents. You may want to buy traditional clothes as souvenirs such as Gho and Kira. Bhutan has a thriving liquor industry and Bhutan Mist is something, alcohol-lovers would like to taste. You may find print film at Thimphu but slide film is difficult to find in Bhutan. You can grab some good deals at the picturesque and colorful weekend markets held close to river on Saturday and Sunday. Besides traditional Bhutanese handicrafts, you may also find Indian jewellery here. Do not purchase antiques in Bhutan, as you are not allowed to take them outside the country.

Students in Bhutan wear traditional clothing. Clothing for boys consists of a gho, which is a garment that wraps around the body like a coat that reaches the knee and is worn with a belt. The kira is the what girls wear. It is a dress that is made from a piece of cloth (in the shape of a rectangle) that reaches the ankles. It is secured at the shoulders with a clip, while a woven belt holds the dress closed and in place.
Western-style education was introduced to Bhutan during the reign of Ugyen Wangchuck (1907--26). Until the 1950s, the only formal education available to Bhutanese students, except for private schools in Ha and Bumthang, was through Buddhist monasteries. In the 1950s, several private secular schools were established without government support, and several others were established in major district towns with government backing. By the late 1950s, there were twenty-nine government and thirty private primary schools, but only about 2,500 children were enrolled. Secondary education was available only in India. Eventually, the private schools were taken under government supervision to raise the quality of education provided. Although some primary schools in remote areas had to be closed because of low attendance, the most significant modern developments in education came during the period of the First Development Plan (1961--66), when some 108 schools were operating and 15,000 students were enrolled.
The First Five Year Plan provided for a central education authority—in the form of a director of education appointed in 1961—and an organized, modern school system with free and universal primary education. Since that time, following one year of preschool begun at age four, children attended school in the primary grades—one through five. Education continued with the equivalent of grades six through eight at the junior high level and grades nine through eleven at the high school level. The Department of Education administered the All-Bhutan Examinations nationwide to determine promotion from one level of schooling to the next. Examinations at the tenth-grade level were conducted by the Indian School Certificate Council. The Department of Education also was responsible for producing textbooks; preparing course syllabi and in-service training for teachers; arranging training and study abroad; organizing interschool tournaments; procuring foreign assistance for education programs; and recruiting, testing, and promoting teachers, among other duties.

Dzongkha. Kira. Gho. For those living outside of Bhutan, these words seem as foreign as the Black-necked Cranes that dot the glacial rivers flowing throughout its lands. For the roughly 800,000 residents of this tiny Himalayan country, however, these words are intricate parts of Bhutan's cultural heritage and national identity. As Bhutan develops, its government considers maintaining this strong sense of self crucial to its Gross National Happiness (GNH). By combining interviews with various members of Bhutanese society with lectures from Global Studies teacher Nick Martino, the blue team sought to identify how these concepts of cultural heritage and national identity support Bhutan's quest for happiness. This film was edited by A'ntonia B. with help from her assistant editor, Willem B.

The culture of Bhutan teaches us how to develop compassion in ourselves, others, and all forms of life. Through traditional art and meditation practices, we learn equanimity in all situations. We learn to view all living beings, humans, animals, insects, and plants as sacred and inherently the same as ourselves. We also develop calmness in our minds so that peace, compassion, joy, tolerance and forbearance can be inwardly experienced by ourselves and outwardly experienced to others.
Compassion has no judgment, competition, jealousy, anger, fear, sadness, pride or attachment. Compassion places nothing above or below anything else. Compassion with wisdom sees everything with clarity, just as it is existing in the present moment.

Sustainability for the Choki Traditional Art School:
CTAS is full with ever smiling students from all ages. Most of them are orphans and CTAS provides everything for them, a warm home and education. The students learn art techniques that have been passed down through generations and each piece of artwork they do is a reflection of a tradition that has been untouched by outer influences. Every brush stroke and etching is made by the students for all to receive merit or dharma who view the artwork.

Classroom Construction at Nalanda Monastery:
Originally constructed in India in the 5th century, Nalanda was a center for sacred learning throughout Asia. A vast amount of what came to compromise Buddhism stems from 9th century teachings. Unfortunately, around 1200 AD, the center was destroyed by the muslim army. However, in 1754, the temple was rebuilt in Bhutan after recognizing a number of auspicious signs correlating to the history of the original Nalanda.
Today, Nalanda is on top of the Himalayan mountains, carrying on ancient tradition through 140 orphaned students learning buddhist philosophy, ritual instruments, scriptures, prayer ceremonies, english, and buddhist logic. Every child has a story to tell and from a very early age, they already understand what most of us won’t realize until the end of our lives, that we must respect all forms of life to live in harmony and that happiness come within ourselves and not from material things.

Druk Nyamrup Tshogpa, a people-centric aspiring political party in Bhutan, believes in building HOPE together and moving the nation forward together in the early stages of our nascent democracy. We believe no Bhutanese should be left behind because our's is a small society of just 700,000 people.
We believe one of the greatest gifts our Kings gave to Bhutan is democracy. No leaders have ever inspired such high standards for public service. Our values originated from our Kings and their inspiration will forever be the foundation of Druk Nyamrup Tshogpa. We share the great privilege and responsibility of carrying their legacy into the future.
We are creating inclusive and democratic political platform that our people love and dreaming up new opportunities for our people that will delight them down the road.
In 2013 election, the Druk Nyamrup Tshogpa offers a vision for every citizen.
In Nyamrup spirit, let's build HOPE together and move our precious nation forward.

Travellers and Magicians (Dzongkha: ཆང་ཧུབ་ཐེངས་གཅིག་གི་འཁྲུལ་སྣང) is a 2003 Bhutanese Dzongkha language film written and directed by Khyentse Norbu, a reincarnate lama of Tibetan Buddhism, who is also known as Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse Rinpoche. The movie is the first feature film shot entirely in the Kingdom of Bhutan. The majority of the cast are not professional actors; Dendup, a well-known Bhutanese radio actor and producer, is the exception. This movie is among the first to take a Himalayan Buddhist perspective.
