Canada is the fifth-largest producer of oil in the world. But when the price of oil plummeted in late 2014, the country’s oil-rich western province of Alberta began hurtling toward a recession, with widespread layoffs and historic reductions in drilling activity.
The impact was felt across Canada, too. Crude oil is the country’s number one export, and 99 percent of it is sold to the United States. But in recent years, the US has emerged as a major oil producer in its own right, following a revolution in controversial fracking technology that has increased US oil production and contributed to a global oversupply of oil. Now, Canada's energy sector faces the difficult question of how to meet new markets in a changing global energy landscape.
VICE News visited Alberta, known as Canada’s “Texas of the North," in what is normally high season for drilling — just before the frozen ground thaws — to explore how the bitter sting of low oil prices is affecting the region’s the economy.
In this excerpt, VICE News speaks with the Canadian Association of Oil Drilling Contractors to hear how oil and gas exploration is slowing down, and meets the CEO of a small oil and gas company who is keeping drills in operation on his site, despite the declining oil prices.

Ezra Levant of TheRebel.media reports: The giant oil company Shell announced they’re cancelling an oilsands megaproject in Alberta, called Carmon Creek.
It’s a disaster for Shell — they’re writing off $2 billion dollars. More importantly, 1,450 Canadian families are out jobs.
And of course the 80,000 barrels of oil per day that Carmon Creek was going to produce is gone too. Even at forty dollars a barrel, that’s $3 million a day.
Obviously low world oil prices are part of the problem. But Shell is still investing billions in other parts of the world.
So why did they announce they were killing the project yesterday, at 3:46 p.m. Alberta time?
Well it’s obvious. Because they were waiting to see what Alberta’s first NDP Budget looked like. It confirmed their worst fears. So they pulled the plug.

I always loved these Hitler 'Downfall' parodies, so got inspired by tonight's amazing NDP victory in Alberta...Enjoy!
On May 5, 2015, the Alberta New Democratic Party, or NDP, won a surprise majority victory in the Alberta election. The result ended almost 44 years of Progressive Conservative rule as sitting premier Jim Prentice led his party to defeat.
This followed a tumultuous year in Alberta politics which saw Prentice replace disgraced former premier Alison Redford as leader of the PC Party and premier. Prentice tried to revive the fortunes of his party, recruited members of the Wildrose Party opposition over to the government, and introduced a provincial budget that was supposed to be "transformational", but proved unpopular.
Then Prentice arrogantly called a provincial election, one year early, expecting to sweep back to power. Instead, he faced a strong challenge from Rachel Notley and the NDP, who spoke to Albertans' need for change in government.
I wanted to spoof the many typical attacks on the NDP from the governing PCs and decided to create this parody video using the popular scene from "Downfall" oft parodied.
Please enjoy!

A glimpse of the city of Calgary Alberta during October of 2012. It's a great place to call home. Travel to Calgary now!
Calgary is the largest city in Alberta, with a metro population of 1.3 million people. It's Located around 80 km (50 mi) east of the front ranges of the Canadian Rockies.
Calgary has the most sunny days year round of Canada's 100 largest cities, with just over 332 days of sun. Calgary has a dry climate similar to other cities in the western Great Plains and Canadian Prairies.
Calgary has the warmest winters of all the major prairie cities in Canada. The climate is greatly influenced by the city's elevation and proximity to the Rocky Mountains. Calgary's winters are broken up by warm, dry Chinook winds that routinely blow into the city from over the mountains during the winter months. These winds are known to raise the winter temperature by 20 °C (36 °F), and as much as 30 °C (54 °F) in just a few hours, and may last several days.
The economy of Calgary includes activity in the energy, financial services, film and TV, transportation and logistics, technology, manufacturing, aerospace, health and wellness, retail, and tourism sectors. Calgary is home to the second-highest number of corporate head offices in Canada among the country's 800 largest corporations.
In 1988, Calgary became the first Canadian city to host the Olympic Winter Games.

Sheila Gunn Reid of TheRebel.Media reports:
There is a high social cost to bad economic policy.
Families and communities across the province are struggling through some of the worst times Alberta has seen in a generation. There has been a doubling in EI claims and estimates say there are 100,000 people out of work.
Food bank usage has spiked all across the province. Some places like Fort McMurray are especially hard hit, seeing a 75% uptick in food bank demand.
Homeless shelters, like Inn from the Cold in Calgary have seen a 130% increase in need for their services since the same time last year.
Property crime is up by 18% in Edmonton and violent crime is up 12% since last year.
And now there's a sudden surge in suicides in Alberta, jumping more than 30% in just the first half of the year. Statistics say that those suicide numbers often increase around the Holidays.
It's gotten so bad that the Wildrose Party called for an emergency debate in the legislature on the societal cost of the economy.
Let's see what the Notley government is doing to mitigate these horrible problems in Alberta.
They're making everything that we grow or move cost more with a carbon tax - basically a PST on everything struggling Albertans buy. They're making food cost more by piling union style labor costs onto farming operations with Bill 6, they're scaring off oil and gas investment with a risky and unnecessary royalty review. They're making it harder for businesses to create jobs through a raise in the minimum wage. They're stifling business growth with a raise in corporate income tax.
The NDP are doing nothing to mitigate what's happening in Alberta. In fact, it looks like they're doing everything they can to make the societal problems in Alberta worse. But that’s really what they want. Isn't it?
If the NDP have to collapse it all just to build it back up their way, well that’s just the cost of building their socialist utopia.
Alberta families are just collateral damage, a sacrifice on the altar of Al Gore and government control.

On my way home I told you I would stay for you. It’s getting late now. I told you I
would wait for you. You left the door wide open. Risk taken, ties broken. I laughed.
We’re on our way now. I told you I would stay for you. Lately they say I’m trying too
hard but maybe that’s what I needed to get this far. Time escaping and it’s
something I should learn. ‘Cause time’s escaping and erasing my chance with her.
From the car to the hotel bed. Through the dark, all the things you said. And still
the only thing on my mind... Lately they say I’m trying too hard but maybe that’s
what I needed to get this far. Lately they say I’m trying too hard and all you had to
say was don’t go far.

On September 22, 2015 - I was on a road 100 KM from Grande Prairie. Scary night!!! Going for a 10k run down a nice trail I found a couple weeks ago. Well, coming back I saw two cougars cross the path in front of me. Got out a bear banger, bear spray and most important my video camera. Wouldn't you know it, as I walked by not seeing them, one came at me. Bear spray to his eyes, hollering like I've never done before and away went the cat and his brother (well his brother looked like he might come at me too so I shot a little at him for good measure). And yes, most importantly you can see it on video.
Super excited to see the cats as it was always a dream of mine to see one as most of my friends have heard me say lots before. Only fitting that it was like this. Super happy to have my bear spray as I don't think the bear banger would have done anything from 8 feet and I would have had to resort to my knife. The things running has brought into my life!
On a side note. Please if you run in the woods like I do pack bear spray and have it ready. I packed it tonight but didn't have the safety off until I saw them cross in front of me. Had I not seen them and they attacked as I went by I wouldn't have had time to get the safety off. It was an eye opener and I'm grateful it didn't turn out worse.

Banff is a town within Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada. It is located in Alberta's Rockies along the Trans-Canada Highway, approximately 126 km (78 mi) west of Calgary and 58 km (36 mi) east of Lake Louise. At an elevation of 1,400 m (4,600 ft) to 1,630 m (5,350 ft), Banff is the community with the second highest elevation in Alberta after Lake Louise.
The Town of Banff was the first municipality to incorporate within a Canadian national park. The town is a member of the Calgary Regional Partnership.
Banff is a resort town and one of Canada's most popular tourist destinations, known for its mountainous surroundings and hot springs. It is a destination for outdoor sports and features extensive hiking, biking, scrambling and skiing areas within the area. Sunshine Village, Ski Norquay and Lake Louise Mountain Resort are the three nearby ski resorts located within the national park.
Attractions in Banff, Alberta
============================
There are a number of popular mountains located immediately adjacent to the townsite which include Mount Rundle (2,949 m or 9,675 ft); Cascade Mountain (2,998 m or 9,836 ft); and Mount Norquay (2,134 m or 7,001 ft). Mount Norquay has a ski slope as well as mountain biking trails on the Stoney Squaw portion. A popular tourist attraction, the Banff Gondola, is available to ascend Sulphur Mountain (2,281 m or 7,484 ft) where a boardwalk (Banff Skywalk) beginning from the upper terminal takes visitors to Sanson Peak. Sulphur Mountain is also the location of one of Banff's most popular attractions, the Banff Upper Hot Springs.
Lake Minnewanka located 6 minutes north of the townsite is a very popular day use area with a variety of activities. Mountain biking, hiking and fishing are all activities allowed in this part of the park. There is a very popular Lake Cruise and motor boat rentals and a small food concession available at the marina.
Tunnel Mountain (formerly known as Sleeping Buffalo Mountain) (1,690 m or 5,545 ft) is situated within the townsite and is very popular for quick hikes; one can reach the summit in less than half an hour. It was named Tunnel Mountain because surveyors initially wanted to make a tunnel for the Canadian Pacific Railway right through the mountain, instead of following the Bow River Valley.
Banff is home to the well-known Banff World Television Festival, Banff Mountain Film Festival, Rocky Mountain Music Festival and Bike Fest. The city is also the starting point of the 4,417 km (2,745 mi) Great Divide Mountain Bike Route, which terminates at Antelope Wells, New Mexico in the United States.

We were lucky enough to see a bunch of wildlife, including four moose (and I had never seen one in my life before this!). It was my first time visiting Edmonton and although we were only there very briefly, it was a really good time.
Thanks for watching! ♥

"Walking on oil - Alberta's oil sands" identifies 10 major energy companies, all involved in oil sands projects in Alberta: Syncrude, Suncor, Shell, Western, Chevron, Albian Sands, Terasen Pipelines, EnCana, Imperial Oil - Esso, and Patrol-Canada. Fifty-eight companies are involved in 120 oil sands projects in Northern Alberta, Canada.
Watch "Walking on oil - Alberta's oil sands". Discover the real truth about the biggest oil deposits in the world and the stunning environmental impact of oil exploration in the spectacular scenery of Alberta's oil country. Concerns about the future supplies of conventional oil have attracted new attention to the potential yield from "oil sands." Walking on oil - Alberta's Oil Sands" focuses on the Province's crude bitumen oil sands - estimated to be the World's largest Hydrocarbon deposits. According to the World Energy Council, Alberta's reserves are estimated to contain 2,500 billion barrels. Certain experts claim that Alberta's oil sands contain more petroleum than Saudi Arabia's oil fields, and enough resources to supply Canada's energy for more than 475 years, or total World's energy needs for up to 15 years.
But does the World need this oil resource?
Alberta's Oil Sands - The Problem And The Conflict: The fuel from the tar sands is thick and heavy and is bound to water and sand. Extraction of the oil and refining it destroys countless miles of forestland and requires enormous amounts of energy and water. Tar sands oil production creates 2 to 3 times as much greenhouse gas as production of conventional oil hence the contribution to global warming. Enormous machinery is used to remove trees, rocks, soil and sand from the earth and once the tar sands are removed, the resulting huge holes in the ground remain along with the toxic water-borne tailings. As a world together, we have to make the right decisions about the extraction and use of Alberta's immense oil resource.

From Edmonton to Jasper to Lake Louise
00:32 In Edmonton, the capital of Alberta, the journey begins. The program includes the Art Gallery of Edmonton and a walk through the West Edmonton Mall, which has long been the largest mall in the world.
03:02 The next day we drive in the Elk Island National Parc, "wild nature with wild animals" where you can them walking around freely. Here in Elk Island National Parc is the recovery herd for Canada. They are sent to recovery projects in canada, in the US and to Russia. Approximately 800 wood bisons and 700 plain bisons live here.
06:43 We enjoy a relaxing train trip with the comfortable Via Rail Canada to Jasper, a typical Canadian small town. In the evening we organize a night tour is through an Ice Canyon in Jasper National Park. Incredible icefalls where you often find iceclimbers. An amazing dream landscape. In summer, you cannot go down to the bottom, however, since then there are big raging rivers.
We also try ice-skating in the dark, which is quite normal in Canada. And our hockey, the Canadians can only smile about our efforts...
16:14 On the way to Lake Louise, the Canadian Mecca for skiers, we experience Canada: on the Columbia Icefielf the Columbia Icefield we take a break, the next stop is more enforced: the mile-long freight train that makes us wait almost an hour at the railroad crossing. Then we we are caught in a real blizzard; Mountain goat standing in the middle of the road.
17:56 Visit to the Deer Lodge, one of the oldest hotels in the city. Lake Louise is the venue for the Ski World Cup downhill and giant slalom, the season starts in the beginning of November and ends in the middle of May, because then people go playing golf.
21:07 In a sleigh we visit the famous Fairmont Chateau by the Victoria glacier. Here they are holding the international ice sculpture festival at the moment - the Ice Magic Festival.
