Arsenic contaminated drinking water affects over 150 million people worldwide. Oxford engineer and geographer, Stephen Honan details an exciting but simple solution: a natural filter which produces clean drinking water. And the best part is that the filter is 100% recyclable.
Stephen Honan aspires to build a better Bangladesh. A social entrepreneur, engineer, and naval officer, Stephen was honored by Robert Rotberg, President of the World Peace Foundation, for designing a novel water purification system that removes arsenic from drinking water. The innovation is extremely low cost and fully recyclable; all of the waste from the filter can be converted into a chemical used to produce semiconductors and solar panels. Stephen first began designing the system when he was 15 years old and has recently piloted the filter in Bangladesh, where over 45 million people are currently consuming arsenic contaminated drinking water.
This talk was part of the "The Art and Science of Tomorrow" session at TEDxOxbridge "Timeless Ideas" in Oxford, England at the Said Business School on June 1, 2013. Find out more about TEDxOxbridge at www.tedxoxbridge.com or on Facebook or Twitter (@tedxoxbridge).

Central Anhui constituted most of the fertile and densely populated Huai He River watershed. Southern Anhui, along the Yangtze, was closer to Hubei and southern Jiangsu pr

The province of Anhui was formed in the 17th century. Before then, there was no coherent concept of "Anhui". Northern Anhui was firmly a part of the North China Plain in terms of culture, together with modern-day Henan province. Central Anhui constituted most of the fertile and densely populated Huai He River watershed. Southern Anhui, along the Yangtze, was closer to Hubei and southern Jiangsu provinces in culture. Finally, the hills of southeastern Anhui formed a unique and distinct cultural sphere of its own.

Oral English Requirement: http://www.academicsinasia.com/oral-english/
The majority of students at Sias must fulfill a 2-year Oral English requirement as part of their degree plan. Students fulfilling this requirement must take both Freshman and Sophomore Oral English.
Teaching in the Oral English Program:
Teachers in the Oral English Program are assigned to teach either Freshman or Sophomore Oral English. A standard teaching load for Oral English faculty members is 18 hours per week. This usually means that they are teaching nine different classes that meet once a week, and the standard class period is composed of two 45 minute periods with a 10 minute break in between. The average class size for Oral English classes at Sias is between 25 and 30 students. Aside from teaching, Oral English faculty members are also required to hold office hours for two hours each week; these may be held formally or informally, as long as faculty members make themselves available to their students for a minimum of two hours per week.
In order to provide faculty members with additional support and guidance in fulfilling their role as teachers, the Oral English Program faculty is divided into two teaching teams—the Freshman Oral English Team and the Sophomore Oral English Team —according to their teaching assignments.
Each team has a Team Leader who regularly supports the team with specific information to help guide lesson planning and teaching via email and a weekly team meeting. The Team Leaders also help to relay information from the School of Foreign Languages regarding any relevant administrative issues.
The Oral English Program Curriculum:
The Oral English Program Curriculum is composed of a set of global goals and a series of 8 units, each composed of specific goals and objectives intended to guide classroom instruction. Units 1-4 are covered in the freshman year, while units 5-8 are covered in the sophomore year. The focus of the 8 units is on helping the students to develop communicative competence in spoken English in order to be able to effectively and appropriately socialize on campus, interact in small group opinion-based conversations, relay information and share experiences through story-telling, and to successfully perform in job interviews.
Lesson Planning and Resources:
Teachers are provided with a unit description for each of the units they teach, specifying what should be focused on in each week’s lessons. Teachers also receive a copy of the student textbook for the course as well as a pronunciation book to use as resources for lesson planning. Finally, all Oral English faculty members are invited to join a private wiki that was developed specifically to facilitate collaboration among the faculty and to assist teachers in sharing lesson planning ideas and resources.
Training, Professional Development, and Support
Another asset to the Oral English Program at Sias is the Oral English Program Faculty Trainer, who works closely with the Team Leaders to provide more in-depth training and individualized support to the Oral English Program faculty. The Faculty Trainer provides intensive training during the fall orientation period to prepare teachers to enter the classroom, and then continues to provide additional opportunities for professional development throughout the year through various workshops. The Faculty Trainer is available throughout the academic year to answer questions regarding teaching and the Oral English Program curriculum and will also meet individually with all new teachers at least once to provide specific feedback after conducting a classroom observation.

China is a huge country in Eastern Asia (about the same size as the United States of America) with the world's largest population.
With coasts on the East China Sea, Korea Bay, Yellow Sea, and South China Sea, in total it borders 14 nations. It borders Afghanistan, Pakistan (through the disputed territory of Kashmir), India, Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, Laos and Vietnam to the south; Tajikistan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan to the west; Russia and Mongolia to the north and North Korea to the east. This number of neighbouring states is equalled only by China's vast neighbour to the north, Russia.
This article only covers mainland China. For Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, please see separate articles.
See in China
===========
China's attractions are endless and you will never run out of things to see. Especially near the coastal areas, if you run out of things to see in one city, the next one is usually just a short train ride away.
Whether you are a history buff, a nature lover or someone who just wants to relax on a nice beach, China has it all from the majestic Forbidden City in Beijing, to the breathtaking scenery of Jiuzhaigou. Even if you live in China for many years, you'll find that there's always something new to discover in another part of the country. Perhaps unsurprising due to its sheer size and long history, China has the third largest number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, after Italy and Spain.
Karst Scenery
=============
The gumdrop mountains and steeply sloping forested hills with bizarre rock formations favored by traditional Chinese artists are not creative fantasy. In fact, much of southern and southwestern China is covered in strangely eroded rock formations known as Karst. Karst is type of limestone formation named after an area in Slovenia. As limestone layers erode, the denser rock or pockets of different stone resist erosion forming peaks. Caves hollow out beneath the mountains which can collapse forming sinkholes and channels leading to underground rivers. At its most unusual Karst erodes to form mazes of pinnacles, arches and passageways. The most famous example can be found in the Stone Forest (石林 Shílín) near Kunming in Yunnan. Some of the most famous tourist areas in China feature spectacular karst landscapes — Guilin and Yangshuo in Guangxi, and much of central and western Guizhou province.
Sacred sites
==========
Several sites in China have famous Buddhist art:
Yungang Grottoes in Shanxi Province - more than 51,000 Buddhist carvings, dating back 1,500 years, in the recesses and caves of the Yangang Valley mountainsides
Mogao Caves in Gansu province - art and manuscripts dating back to the 4th century
Dazu Rock Carvings near Chongqing - dating from the 7-13th century
Longmen Grottoes near Luoyang - 5-10th century
Mountains
========
The Five Great Mountains (五岳 wǔyuè), associated with Taoism:
Mount Tai (泰山), Shandong Province (1,545 meters)
Mount Hua (华山), Shaanxi Province (2,054 meters)
Mount Heng (Hunan) (衡山), Hunan Province (1,290 meters)
Mount Heng (Shanxi) (恒山), Shanxi Province (2,017 meters)
Mount Song (嵩山), Henan Province, where the famous Shaolin Temple (少林寺) is located (1,494 meters)
The Four Sacred Mountains (四大佛教名山 sìdà fójiào míngshān), associated with Buddhism:
Mount Emei (峨嵋山), Sichuan Province (3,099 meters)
Mount Jiuhua (九华山), Anhui Province (1,342 meters)
Mount Putuo (普陀山), Zhejiang Province (297 meters, an island)
Mount Wutai (五台山), Shanxi Province (3,058 meters)
The three main sacred mountains of Tibetan Buddhism:
========
Mount Kailash, Tibet (5,656 meters), also known as Gang Rinpoche in Tibetan, also one of Hinduism's holiest mountains visited by many Hindu pilgrims
Kawa Karpo
Amnye Machen
Itineraries
=========
Some itineraries cover trips that are entirely within China:

Along the Yangtze river
Along the Yellow river
Along the Grand Canal
Yunnan tourist trail
Overland to Tibet

Caves hollow out beneath the mountains which can collapse forming sinkholes and channels leading to underground rivers. At its most unusual Karst erodes to form mazes of pinnacles, arches and passageways. The most famous example can be found in the Stone Forest (石林 Shílín) near Kunming in Yunnan. Some of the most famous tourist areas in China feature spectacular karst landscapes — Guilin and Yangshuo in Guangxi, and much of central and western Guizhou province.

===========
=============
Travel video about destination Zhou Zhuang in China.
A few kilometres from the modern, pulsating and gigantic metropolis of Shanghai there is an idyllic mediaeval village, Zhou Zhuang, that is believed to have been the first ‘water village’ in China. However, it was not until the middle of the 1980s that the picturesque village was added to the tourist map and since then its splendid old buildings and canals have been recognised as a truly magnificent treasure. The origin and founding of Zhou Zhuang dates back around nine hundred years. Due to its unique location the town has escaped war and plunder as only the local inhabitants knew their way around the labyrinth-like canals that once led into the small town. Free from battle and invasion it has managed to retain its age old Chinese charm right up until the present day. One of the most elegant monuments in Zhou Zhuang is located in the southern area of the town, the beautifully decorated and lovingly restored Quanfu Temple. A haven of peace and tranquillity that encapsulates the serene way of life of this captivating place.

California travel expert Veronica Hill of http://www.CaliforniaTravelExpert.com tours Chinatown Los Angeles in this episode of "California Travel Tips."
When you think of Chinatown, colorful paper lanterns, delightful dim sum and fierce Chinese dragons may come to mind. The truth is, Chinatown Los Angeles has all of that and more.
Established in 1938, LA's New Chinatown along Broadway and Hill streets, makes a fun and exotic day trip.
Chinatown history dates back to 1852, when the Chinese arrived in Los Angeles. Located on the site of Union Station, Old Chinatown fell into disrepair during the mid 1910s, and it was demolished.
Today, Chinatown LA is home to more than 15,000 Asian residents, who live, play and worship here every day.
The Taoist temple on Yale Street is one of the largest and the most beautiful in Southern California. Here, worshippers pray to the goddess of the seas, lighting incense and offering up fruit and vegetables, which are used to feed the poor.
During Chinese New Year, oranges are offered at this temple's altar for good luck and fortune. The celebration continues with crackling fireworks and a festive Chinese New Year parade with colorful dragons, flags and dancers along North Broadway. The event draws more than 50,000 spectators a year.
One of the best things about Chinatown in LA is the performances by the Shaolin monks from the Henan province of China. These incredibly talented kung fu masters perform the first and third Sunday of each month in Central Plaza.
At 628 W. College St., you can check out the former Bruce Lee martial arts studio. This was his third (and final) kung fu training academy in the United States.
Central Plaza's Gin Ling Way, named for the street of Golden Treasures in Old Peking, is colorful mix of Chinese restaurants, fortune tellers, art galleries and amusements. You may even see a Chinese contortionist act.
While you're in Central Plaza, don't miss the colorful Chinese dragon mural painted by Tyrus Wong, then throw a coin for luck at the Seven Star Sacred Caverns wishing pool. The five-tiered Hop Louie Pagoda was built in 1941.
Chinatown shopping choices are endless. Check out Realm, one of Chinatown's hip new home stores, then pick up some Chinese art or jade jewelry at the K.G. Louie Company, a gift shop dating back to 1935. At Sincere Imports, you'll discover Chinese lanterns, masks and other fun souvenirs.
Did you know the fortune cookie was invented right here in Los Angeles in 1916? Created by George Jung of the Hong Kong Noodle Company, these sweet treats are still made fresh daily in Chinatown's Wonder Bakery, where you'll also find some great Boba tea.
You can't leave Chinatown without indulging in some good Chinese food. Just be sure the restaurant you go to has an A in the window. Anything less won't do!
My picks for the best Chinatown restaurants are Yang Chow, known for its slippery shrimp, and, for the best dim sum in Chinatown, the Empress Pavilion. Follow this up with a slice of strawberry whipped cream cake at Phoenix Bakery, and your meal is complete.
Everything old is new again, and Chinatown is quickly becoming an LA hot spot. In fact, Brad Pitt was recently seen at Central Plaza's Mountain Bar, and director Quentin Tarantino now owns the historic King Hing Theater. Word has it that Tarantino plans to catalog, restore and showcase vintage Chinese and kung fu movies in the 425-seat theater, but the building still sits empty.
If you're looking for a fun alternative to California's standard tourist attractions, Chinatown won't disappoint.
IF YOU GO...
Los Angeles Chinatown directions: Take the 101 freeway and exit at Alameda Street near Union Station. Drive north to Broadway and park in the many lots (average $3-$5 per day) or Chinatown parking meters about town. Central Plaza is located on Gin Ling Way between Broadway and Hill streets near College St.

The greater Luoyang area has been sacred ground since the late Neolithic period. This area at the intersection of the Luo and Yi rivers was considered to be the geographical center of China. Because of this sacred aspect, several cities – all of which are generally referred to as "Luoyang" – have been built in this area. In 2070 BC, the Xia Dynasty king Tai Kang moved the Xia capital to the intersection of Luo river and Yi River and named the city Zhenxun . In 1600 BC, King Tang of Shang defeated Jie, the final Xia Dynasty king, and built Western Bo, a new capital on the Luo River. The ruins of Western Bo are located in Luoyang Prefecture.
