'The shock of the new' - Wolverhampton was not the only town being transformed into some post modernist Utopia in the nineteen seventies. And why not? It was still an age of great optimism, so out with the old and in with the sleek, minimalist new. All shiny polished chrome and reinforced concrete with a bit of modern art work thrown in....Most of what you see on the orignal 8mm footage shot in 1976 has gone or changed almost beyond recognition apart from a few shady corners lurking around the outskirts of the town. Some of the town's fabric has been transported to the 'Black Country Museum', e.g : the Wednesfield Road Canal Bridge and possibly the water fountain.
Much of what was the site of the old GWR Low Level Railway Station seen in the 76 footage should have been frozen in time as part of the town's industrial and social heritage. But the public house, now appropriately known as 'The Great Weatern' remains as a popular Real Ale pub. Note - the old M&B; and Butlers inn sign a thing of the past. The iconic Victorian factory where the M&B; flag proudly fluttered over Butler's Brewery now sadly falling to ruin and is as they casually say 'waiting for a developer'. It looks so sad now dwafted by a huge twenty-first century monstrosity, as pictured in the last part of the video....
Yet some things remain as emblematic of this once great town St Peter's Church along side the statue of the town's Saxon founder 'Lady Wulfruna'. The stately Art Gallery remains and so does the Prince Consort, Albert mounted upon his horse in Queen Square and so much admired by Queen Victoria, the unmistakable Chubbs red brick building original home of world famous 'Chubbs Lock and Safe Company'. Then there's the renowned 'Molineux Stadium', hallowed football ground of the much celebrated Wolverhampton Wanderers.....but as it used to be with peeps of the oldest street in Wolverhampton North Street that used to be the main route out of town northwards towards Stafford....The Mander Centre featured in the 76 film still towers over the town and has become iconic or at least become acceptable over the decades.
For a taste of the old Wolverhampton wander down to the canal side and walk under the lovely old bridges and beside the 21 locks towards Compton, there you can easily think of the blood, sweat and tears shed by our ancestors.
The video ends as the unchanging, elegant and somehow reassuring spire of Holy Trinity Church surrounded in midst of a really gross urbane sprawl, can yet be seen from an almost entirely green bower on the edge of town.
Take what you can from these images most of them shot on an old 'Super 8' cine camera early one Summer Sunday morning back in 1976.
Audio track - 'The Zodiac' - 'Down to the Bone'.

The Owls were hit by a controversial first half penalty that set Wolves up for victory at Molineux.
Claude Dielna appeared unlucky to be penalised for a tackle on Nouha Dicko but the referee pointed to the spot and Bakary Sako fired home.
Former Wednesday loanee Benik Afobe extended the advantage after the break before James Henry sealed the win and continued Wanderers’ ascent towards the play-offs.
Wednesday did have their chances but could not capitalise, which proved the main difference between the two sides on the night.

Changing perceptions is a series of short documentary style videos that aim to change your perceptions of certain social issues and problems.
The first episode "No place to call home" captures the stories of five homeless people living in Wolverhampton. I decided to create this after speaking to a homeless individual, hearing their story and realising just how bad that it was.
If you would like to support local food banks, homeless shelters or local homeless people check out the following information for links and sites of organisations in Wolverhampton:

Wolverhampton's main railway station, which is due for an extensive renovation, is positioned on the West Coast Mainline, and so operates frequent and regular services to London, the North West, Scotland, the South West and Wales. Services to Birmingham New Street Station, one of the UK's largest rail interchanges, operate approximately every ten minutes. The station is just a few minutes' walk from the city centre and a matter of metres from the city's bus station.
Although Wolverhampton does have its own small airport, most scheduled flights arrive at Birmingham Airport, which can be reached in just 30 minutes by direct train.
Bus services originate from the city's bus station, near the railway station. There are regular and frequent services to all parts of the city, although it should be noted that many services stop at around 11PM. Buses from Wolverhampton also travel to the towns of the Black Country (including Dudley, Sandwell, West Bromwich and Walsall) and to Birmingham, although the journey by road can be quite long.

On this day…Diana opened Wolverhampton Police Station
On this day 23 years ago, one of the most famous women in the world came to open Wolverhampton police station - Her Royal Highness, Diana, Princess of Wales.
The day is remembered by many of the officers who were fortunate enough to meet her, including serving officer PC Lisa Hughes.
The Princess of Wales was invited to formally open Wolverhampton’s Bilston Street building on 31 July 1992. During her visit she was interested to see the special medical suite and talk to domestic abuse and child protection officers.
Forming part of a line of officers and traffic wardens invited to greet the Princess was 22-year-old PC Lisa Hughes.
Lisa remembers Diana as ‘a very lovely lady’ and recalls: “She said hello and had a general chat to a few of us. I was quite nervous so I can’t remember exactly what she said, but it was along the lines of asking people how long they had worked for the force.”
Now working as a neighbourhood officer on Dudley’s Gornal and Sedgley team, Lisa has proudly kept a 23-year-old photograph of their meeting. “It was the one and only time I met Diana,” Lisa said.
Back in 1992 no one knew that Diana was to end her life abruptly just over five years later. Following her death in a Paris car crash, staff left flowers at Wolverhampton Police Station under her portrait and the visitors’ book she signed at the opening.

If you have any information please phone West Midlands Police on 101 or call the charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

10. Barcelona - The city is a pioneer in smart city and low-carbon solutions.
9. Hong Kong - The city has also been a leader in the use and adoption of smart cards, which are already used by millions of residents for services like public transit, library access, building access, shopping, and car parks.
8. Copenhagen - The city has committed to carbon neutrality by 2025 and 40% of its citizens regularly commute via bicycle.
7. Berlin - Berlin is testing out vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technologies in the hopes of creating a virtual power plant from electric vehicles.
6. Tokyo - The city will create a smart town in the suburbs in partnership with major industry. The eco-burb will contain homes that integrate solar panels, storage ba tteries, and energy efficient appliances all connected to a smart grid.
5. London - also scored relatively high across the board. London has been well-recognized for some of its sustainability innovations (i.e. congestion tax) and its robust transit system.
4. New York - New York scored higher than most other cities in the ranking in all of the categories except of quality of life, where it ranked a poor 47th. It has teamed with innovator IBM to help the city prevent fires and protect first responders as well as identify questionable tax refund claims--a move that is expected to save the city about $100 million over a five-year period.
3. Paris - Paris already has a highly successful bike sharing program, Velib, and just last month, its mayor launched a similar model for small EVs called Autolib.
2. Toronto - smartest city in NA, scored well across the board, it is an active member of the Clinton 40 (C40) megacities, which seek to transition to the low-carbon economy. The private sector is getting in on the action too, setting up a Smart Commute Toronto initiative to increase the city's transit efficiency.
1. The smartest city in the world is Vienna - Vienna was the only city that ranked in the top 10 in every category. It is establishing bold smart-city targets and tracking their progress to reach these goals with programs like Smart Energy Vision 2050, Roadmap 2020, and Action Plan 2012-2015.
A smart city is defined as using information and communication technologies to be more intelligent and efficient in the use of resources, resulting in cost and energy savings, improved service delivery and quality of life, and reduced environmental footprint--all supporting innovation and the low-carbon economy.
The rankings were determined by the cities scores on 4 global categories: Innovation, Green ranking, Quality of life and digital city.
