When the Protestant Reformation began, Henry VIII opposed Martin Luther and sided with the Catholic Church. This changed when his first wife, Catherine of Aragon, did not provide him with a live son to inherit his kingdom. Henry VIII asked the Pope for an annulment (since the Catholic Church does not recognize divorce, per se) and decided to leave the Catholic Church when his request was rejected. Parliament passed the Act of Supremacy in 1534, which declared Henry to be the "Supreme Head" of the Church of England.
As Supreme Head of the Church of England, Henry dissolved the monasteries and sold Church lands to generate revenue. He also divorced Catherine and married Ann Boleyn. As far as doctrine, however, Henry did very little, making his Reformation the most conservative of the Reformation movements.
I will be posting Part 2 of this lecture soon, in which I will address the progress of the Reformation during reigns of Henry's children.

First Female Church of England Bishop Libby Lane Consecrated In York Reverend Libby Lane becomes first woman bishop in the Church of England
The consecration of the Church of England's first woman bishop was met with a lone voice of protest at York Minister. The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, asked the congregation of nearly 2,000 whether it was "now your will that she should be ordained?" Most shouted: "It is". But one man stood and called out: "No, it's not in the bible. With respect, Your Grace, I ask to speak on this absolute impediment, please," he continued.
Despite the interruption, the consecration of the Reverend Libby Lane as the eighth Bishop of Stockport continued. A Church of England spokesman named the protester as Rev Paul Williamson and described him as a "serial protester".
The spokesman said they were expecting him to attend, adding: "He's got the right to protest but the contrast was between a lone voice protesting and a sea of voices affirming." Rev Williamson previously protested the marriage of the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall.
Rev Lane was named as the new bishop last month in a move ending centuries of all-male leadership in the Church. The announcement came after the General Synod formally adopted legislation allowing women bishops. During the service she spoke to affirm and declare her belief in the faith and swore oaths of allegiance and canonical obedience.

November 8, 2010. Five Anglican bishops have announced their resignation from the Church of England with the intention to set up an English Ordinariate in communion with the Pope. Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, regretfully accepted their decision and wished them well.
The bishops include Andrew Burnham, Bishop of Ebbsfleet, Keith Newton, Bishop of Richborough, John Broadhurt, Bishop of Fulham, Edwin Barnes, ermeritus Bishop of Richborough, and David Silk, an emeritus assistant bishop of Exeter.
In a statement released by the bishops their reason for leaving the Church was over "developments they believed to be incompatible with the historic vocation of Anglicanism in faith and order".
This comes after a change in the Anglican church to allow the ordination of female bishops and other liberal innovations.
Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, regretfully accepted their decision and wished them well.
While Catholic liaison officer, Bishop Alan Hopes, welcomed the bishops to the Ordinariate for England, which will be soon be established.

The Church of England consecrated its first female bishop on Monday.
The Reverend Libby Lane became the eighth Bishop of Stockport in a service at York Minster.
Her consecration comes after the church ended a long and divisive dispute by voting last year to allow women to serve as bishops.
The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, led the service to consecrate Lane, which was briefly interrupted by a man shouting, "No, not in the bible."
Sentamu simply moved on.
Dozens of bishops gathered around Lane, laying on hands and offering a sign of solidarity.
Lane was ordained in 1994, one of the first women to become a Church of England priest. Her husband is also an Anglican priest.
The 80 million-strong global Anglican Communion, whose members range from conservative evangelicals to supporters of gay marriage, has long been divided on the role of women in church leadership.
The Church of England's national assembly, the General Synod, voted for the measure in July after a previous attempt two years earlier had failed.

Holy Trollers: Did the Church of England Tease Dawkins’ Views With Well-Wishing Tweet?
It’s no surprise that scientist and famously secular author of The God Delusion Richard Dawkins is no fan of organized religion. After all, Dawkins is attributed as saying, “Faith is the great cop out: the belief in spite of, even perhaps because of, the lack of evidence.”
Last week, it was reported that the open critic of religion suffered a minor stroke and was released from the hospital to recuperate from home. The 74-year-old was forced to cancel several planned appearances as a result of his condition.
Fans from around the world offered their support for Dawkins, and the Church of England took to Twitter to offer its support for the man who sees the world slightly differently than they do:
“I am against religion because it teaches us to be satisfied with not understanding the world,” once said Dawkins. Regardless, the Church of English seems intent on using its policy of prayer to genuinely offer a note of well-wishing for the controversial Dawkins.
Many people noticed the presumed holy shade thrown by the Church:
So what do you think? Was the Church of England tossing some Holy Trinity trolling at the expense of Dawkins’ rhetoric? The controversy over the Tweet was enough to force the Church to respond directly, saying simply, “The tweet was a prayer. Nothing controversial in that. In recent months a regular diet of prayer has been evident on the church’s twitter stream. From the events in Paris to the floods, prayers for the official marking of Her Majesty The Queen’s 90th Birthday. Since the beginning of the month daily prayers have been tweeted on the theme of exploring vocations to all kind of ministry in the Church.”

The Church of England has defended a tweet it sent praying for secularist Richard Dawkins after he had a stroke.
The Church tweeted on Friday "Prayers for Prof Dawkins and his family" after the author fell ill on 5 February.
It was retweeted more than 1,000 times and led some to question if it was mocking the British atheist's position.
But the Church's communications director defended the comment, saying it was a "genuine tweet offering prayer for a public person who was unwell".
'Much better'
Dawkins, a biologist and author of The God Delusion, pulled out of a tour of Australia and New Zealand after he had a minor stroke while at home in Oxford.
A statement from the Sydney Opera House, where Dawkins had been due to appear on 28 February, said the 74-year-old was recovering at home and is expected to make a full or near full recovery.
Speaking on Saturday in an audio update posted on the Soundcloud website, Dawkins says he spent four days at the John Radcliffe Hospital and is "getting much better".
"It's not too bad. I'm very grateful to everybody who has been sending me good wishes from all around the world," he added.
A scan revealed he had suffered a haemorrhagic stroke which affected co-ordination. He is now receiving physiotherapy and occupational therapy.
'Avoid controversy'
The author said he had been having "chronic blood pressure problems" but had believed it was under control.
"The doctors asked me whether I had been suffering from stress, and I had to say, 'Yes, I had'. They keep advising me not to get involved in controversy, and I'm afraid I had to tell them that not getting involved in controversy was one of those things I was not particularly talented at."
He said he had been "very distressed" after his appearance at a US conference had been cancelled. But "paradoxically" the stroke occurred just after he received a "very gracious letter" from the conference organisers, apologising and inviting him to attend after all.
'Hardly surprising'
The Church's tweet was met with mixed reaction - some accusing it of "trolling", or mocking, Dawkins and others seeing it as a genuine attempt to wish one of its detractors well.
Responding to reaction to the tweet, the Rev Arun Arora, director of communications for the Archbishops' Council at the Church of England, denied it was meant to mock Dawkins, saying there had been a "regular diet of prayer" on the Church's Twitter feed.
He said: "The prayer tweeted on Friday evening was for Richard Dawkins.
"It's hardly surprising that I don't agree with all of his views. But there is a danger of reducing him to a one trick pony. His views are more nuanced than both supporters and detractors would usually acknowledge...
"I wish Professor Dawkins well. I hope he makes a swift and full recovery and wish him the best of health. I will pray for him too. It is the very least I can do."

Protestors have managed to cause a rift in the Church of England with their sit-in and peace camp protest outside St Paul's cathedral.
The Church is in the grip of a crisis of conscience surrounding its treatment of the anti-capitalist protest. Those camping outside the cathedral, which was shut for the first time since the Blitz, last Friday, were campaigning to topple the capitalist system, but have only succeeded so far in creating division within the Church.
A legal bid to remove the 200 tents of Occupy London was launched by the Dean of St Paul's, the Right Reverend Graeme Knowles, who says he is optimistic the cathedral, which is in the heart of London's financial district, will reopen to the public.
Richard Chartres, the Bishop of London and third most senior cleric in the Church of England, has also called on the protesters to go. But one of the cathedral's chapter members, Canon Giles Fraser, was understood to have threatened to resign if the church tried to rid its grounds of the demonstrators.
In this edition of the show we ask: Britain: Is the Church of England failing to practice what it preaches?
