WMAQ-TV constantly strives to maintain high programming standards in the public interest. Portions of some of our programs today have been mechanically reproduced. The programs telecast by this station may not be used for any purpose except exhibition at the time of their telecast on receivers of the type ordinarily used for home reception in places where no admission, cover or mechanical operation charges are made.
This aired on local Chicago TV early Saturday, January 14th 1989.
About The Museum of Classic Chicago Television:
The Museum of Classic Chicago Television's primary mission is the preservation and display of off-air, early home videotape recordings (70s and early 80s, primarily) recorded off of any and all Chicago TV channels; footage which would likely be lost if not sought out and preserved digitally. Even though (mostly) short clips are displayed here, we preserve the entire broadcasts in our archives - the complete programs with breaks (or however much is present on the tape), for historical purposes. For information on how to help in our mission, to donate or lend tapes to be converted to DVD, and to view more of the 4,500+ (and counting) video clips available for viewing in our online archive, please visit us at:

Here's an editorial by Dillon Smith, from early in his run as Editorial Director of WMAQ Channel 5 regarding the curious Chicago practice of not selling fresh meat after 6pm, nor selling any on Sundays.
From time to time, Mr. Smith would deliver his editorials in locations pertinent to its content and focus - even at this early date, from a local supermarket after 6pm when fresh meat was made empty at store shelves, due to a contract between the supermarkets and the butchers' union which mandates they only work behind meat counters from 9am to 6pm Monday-Saturday - which, as he points out, provides a massive inconvenience to working men and women who have no such luxury to shop at the pertinent times when meat is sold. (He also adds that no such contract exists elsewhere in the nation.)
Dillon uses the context of current negotiations between the supermarket chains and the butchers' union over a new contract to announce a new ad campaign (http://www.fuzzymemories.tv/docs/wmaq-beef-about-it-tribune-ad-9-5-73.pdf) in five English-language newspapers (the Chicago Tribune, the Sun-Times, the Chicago Daily News, Today and Daily Defender), followed by a Spanish-language version of the ad/poll in El Manana, El Informador and La Raza, to allow viewers and readers to put pressure on both sides to negotiate with shoppers' interests in mind and allow fresh meat to be sold at all times. He also invites people to mail postcards to the station at a P.O. box to get the point across, and says the results of this poll will be presented to both sides at the negotiating table.

Here's an editorial by Dillon Smith, Editorial Director of WMAQ Channel 5, lacing into the Illinois State Legislature's continued failure to come up with legislation to create a Regional Transit Authority for the Chicago area (or as Mr. Smith termed it, "acting with unprecedented irresponsibility").
In the course of the editorial, he names names including House Speaker Robert Blair and Illinois Governor Dan Walker, denounces the political partisanship ("a three-ring clown act in Springfield") that is marring the debate over funding for the proposed RTA, and calls on viewers to contact their legislators on the matter.

"If the way the Legislative leaders are kicking it around, they must think they're the Chicago Bears."
This aired on local Chicago TV in 1973.
David Paulides is a writer, researcher, and investigative journalist notable primarily for his authorship on two subjects: the Bigfoot mystery, and the subject of mysterious disappearances in National Parks. Paulides has drawn significant national attention and has been featured on numerous radio shows as well as television interviews and prime time newscasts.
Paulides' current project is entitled "Missing 411," and documents unsolved cases of disappearing people in national parks. His work on this subject began when he was doing research in a national park when an off-duty park ranger found him and expressed concern about the questionable nature of some of the disappearing persons cases which occur in the parks. The rangers knew Paulides' background and requested that he research into it and see if he could find any leads. Paulides obliged, and since then has uncovered multiple lines of evidence to suggest negligence on behalf of the park service in keeping track of their missing people, and a continuous series of disappearances from all across the U.S., and even other parts of the world, that seem to defy all logical and conventional explanations.
Currently, Paulides has written four books on the topic of missing people who disappear under an odd set of criteria in National Parks and wilderness areas. According to his most recent book, "The Devil's in the Detail," his group does not yet have a theory on what is causing the disappearances, although their field of suspects is narrowing. He advises that readers go outside of their normal comfort zone in trying to nail down who or what the culprit is.

Also take the time to sign this petition; This petition was authored by a reader of the "Missing 411" books. It addresses one of the specific issues we discuss in the books, the lack of accountability inside the DOI when dealing with missing people on their land. Here is the exact wording in the petition:
Currently, there is no centralized registry or database of persons who have gone missing in our national parks and forests or on Bureau of Land Management lands. If search and rescue parties are unable to locate the missing, no records are required to be kept by our government about the missing person case or the circumstances surrounding the event. When remains of the missing are found, again, no records are required to be maintained.
It is time to demand that a national, publicly accessible registry/database be created in which all missing persons are accounted for in our national parks and forests and on BLM lands. The purpose of this would be to make the government accountable for keeping track of the missing, to inform the public of the facts surrounding missing persons cases on public lands, as well as keeping account of all missing individuals and the circumstances under which they went missing on public lands.
We need everyone to get behind this effort and help us get to 10,000 signatures. David Paulides is assisting the author in her efforts and will do everything possible for this issue to get the visibility it deserves.

Reported by: Kyle Rogers
MILLERSBURG, DAUPHIN COUNTY -- Pennsylvania State Police and the Dauphin County District Attorney's Office continues to investigate a 25-year-old missing person's case and now a new tip has prompted investigators to plead for more information.
Tracy Kroh disappeared from the upper Dauphin County in 1989. Kroh was last seen on August 5, 1989 at Alex Acres Mobile Home development where she was attempting to visit her sister and brother-in-law who lived there. The couple was not home at the time. Her car - a 1971 custom-painted Mercury Comet -- was found at a parking space on the Millersburg Square after her family reported her missing.
Now with a grand jury investigation and new information, Dauphin County District Attorney Ed Marsico said a woman reported she was almost kidnapped on the square just three months before Kroh disappeared.
While it is too soon to say if the incidents are related, Marsico stood by investigating officers and Kroh's two sisters on Friday afternoon.
"We're just happy she came forward," said Marisco. "Why she didn't (sooner), we're not concerned about that."
Officers said the woman - who shared physical attributes as Kroh -- came forward with the information was reluctant to do so at one point.
"She was concerned it could help our case and wanted us to have that information even though she was afraid, at first," said Trooper Kyle Tobias of Pennsylvania State Police.
The investigation prompted several leads over the years. Kroh's wallet and other personal belongings were found near a creek. Some tips were also believed to be a hoax.
In an interview with WHP-TV in the early 1990's following a substantial lead, Kroh's mother, Ellen, was hoping for good news.
"Now that you mention that you have to have hope that she is alive out there," said Ellen Kroh.
Her sisters continue to hold onto home after living a lifetime of leads.
"We're just hoping getting out there will have other women who may have had contact, maybe the same person realize it could all be connected," said Tammy Hoffman, Kroh's oldest sister.
At the time of Kroh's disappearance, she was 4'10" and 85 pounds. Police said the women who came forward about her attempted abduction looked similar to Kroh.
Marsico said he feels this case will be solved, adding it is one of the priority cases in Dauphin County since it started right around the time he took the office.
Marsico, Kroh's sisters, and officers call upon anybody with information to reach out to them with tips especially from the summer of 1989 to today.

Here's a promo for NBC during their "Come Home to the Best" campaign which aired in the late 80's - personalized for Chicago. Ding Dong School, billed as "the nursery school of the air", was a half-hour children's TV show which began on WNBQ-TV (now WMAQ-TV) in Chicago, Illinois a few months before its four-year run on NBC (albeit still produced in the WNBQ studios). A precursor to both Sesame Street and Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, the show was hosted live by Frances Horwich (aka "Miss Frances"), and at one point was the most popular TV series aimed at preschoolers. The show and its host, Miss Frances, were mentioned in the comic strip Peanuts in 1955 and 1956. The show was revived in 1959 as a syndicated program, now videotaped and distributed by National Telefilm Associates. This iteration ran until 1965.
