Driving Through Addis Ababa
Driving around Addis with a GoPro. You don't see that much traffic because it was shot on a Sunday. Most people don't work on this day, could be for religious reasons or simply to spend time with family. As you can see Addis has grown exponentially, it takes forever to get to places. If you recognize some of the areas or places, let me know. I will edit it in. Great, enjoy the video.

This early morning flight is operated by the Boeing 767-300ER aircraft, and a choice of omelette or vegetarian is served for breakfast. Some turbulence is encountered but overall, it was a lovely flight and I fell asleep quite soundly after the breakfast.
Enjoy the scenic views of Mumbai city during take-off and the Ethiopian landscape during descent into Addis Ababa.

Travel video about destination Ethiopia.
Ethiopia is a mysterious, mountainous land in the Horn Of Africa and birthplace of Early Christianity. A country of rock churches in the north and a large variety of tribes along the Rift Valley in the south and the oldest civilised region in Africa with more than twenty five centuries of documented history. Addis Abeba is the capital of Ethiopia and within its centre is the lavishly furnished Menbere Selassie Church, final place of rest of Ethiopia’s last royal family. It contains the Empress Menen, two princes and Emperor Haile Selassie who, shortly after removal from power, died due to reasons that are in the main controversial. On many of its thirty seven islands, Lake Tana in Northern Ethiopia is well known for its ancient churches and monasteries. Dega Stefanos is located in the centre of the lake and contains one of the country’s most important monasteries. On the summit, framed by walls and hidden under great trees, is the Holy Stefanos Monastery and within a small sanctuary various mummies are preserved within glazed wooden coffins and the remains of five emperors of various dynasties lie at rest. Awash is a settlement on the edge of the nature park of the same name, inhabited by the Afar, a proud and independent tribe. On market day, people from the surrounding area meet here. For the Afar, life is hard and only the strong survive. Corn, tobacco, dates and cotton are the main trading products of this region. Dromedaries, sheep and goats are bred, and pastureland is often the subject of heated disputes. A journey through Ethiopia is also a journey through time itself. A land of rich traditions, religions and myths. A country of legends and contrast that possesses one of the most colourful histories on the African continent.

When you taste the combination of injera, with meat and vegetables, you'll be in love!
What is Ethiopian food? The first thing you have to know about the cuisine is the staple, known as injera. Injera is sort of like a spongy pancake, but it's airy and made from an ancient grain known as teff. This grain is really only used in Ethiopia and Eritrea, and apart being eaten by Ethiopians and Eritreans, it's not eaten by really any others around the world. Anyway, the teff flour is ground into a flour, made into a batter, and then fried into a huge circular pancake.
When you eat Ethiopian food in Ethiopia, you are always served on a large platter that is first covered by a huge circle of injera that coats the bottom of the pan. You can then order whatever sort of dishes you want, either meat based dishes or vegetarian curries, and they will be dumped into the middle of your injera. Ethiopian cuisine is communally eaten, so whoever you are eating with, you share the same communal plate with them. In this particular video, I was eating alone, as my wife had already eaten, so I polished off the entire thing myself.
Tipped off an article from Addis Eats (http://addiseats.com/2013/03/19/its-that-time-of-year-again/), I decided to go out one day in Addis Ababa to an area of town known as Chechnia to eat at a restaurant known as Grand Restaurant. It took a while to find, but we eventually stepped into the restaurant. The front is more of a dark room and a bar, but if you continue to the back of the Ethiopian restaurant you'll find a kind of makeshift table and chair area that's sort of like a canopy. The roof of the restaurant is covered in Ethiopian traditional paintings like coffee ceremonies and livestock. At Grand Restaurant you sort of eat what's available for the day. I ordered the meat mahberawi, which is basically a platter of injera topped with whatever meat and veg dishes are available that particular day.
For this Ethiopian food meal, my mahberawi included key wat, a spicy Ethiopian beef curry, another curry that included potatoes, shiro wat, and an amazing tomato salad. The key wat was absolutely amazing, full of berbere spices and with just the right amount of oil so it was amazing but not overly greasy. The shiro wat, a stew made from ground chickpeas flour mixed with berbere spices and Ethiopian butter, was one of the best I had in my entire time in Ethiopia. Shiro wat is one of the most popular Ethiopian food dishes, and at Grand restaurant it is amazing. Finally, the tomato salad was also excellent to go with the other curries. The mix included slices tomatoes and onions seasoned with lemon juice, jalapenos, and a touch of salt and pepper. After polishing off all the dishes on the first round, I was still hungry so I decided to order another bowl full of the key wat, but this time I think it was lamb... though I'm not totally sure? Anyway, that drumstick of meat was excellent, the meat literally slid off the bone with ease and the flavor was outstanding.
Ethiopian food is an amazing cuisine in the world, and if you ever have the chance to eat it, you should take it. Don't miss out on the amazing flavors of Ethiopia!

Hundreds of choir members gather in the streets of Addis Ababa, singing and dancing. They are here to celebrate to the annual Meskel festival, held every year in September.
Meskel, which means cross in the ancient language Ge'ez, commemorates the ancient discovery of a cross -- believed to be the one which Jesus was crucified.
In Ethiopia, it's believed a part of the cross was brought from Jerusalem to Ethiopia via Egypt, giving the event a special significance in the country.
This year, tourists from across the world thronged to the festival to join in the festivities.
With its rich and ancient Orthodox Christian tradition, Kibrom Tesfay, a tourist guide believes festivals like Meskel should be promoted as one of Ethiopia's main tourist attractions.
One of Africa's fastest growing economies, the Ethiopian government is planning to develop the tourism industry as part of its growth agenda.
"The importance of the Meskel Festival is not only for Ethiopian Christians. For example, I have eighteen tourists and they use many services starting from the Ethiopian Airlines, Hotels, Car Rentals, Tourist Guides and the destinations. So, the economical benefit are for all Ethiopians. It also give the country a good image. So, I think we need to do more in order to promote and earn more income from Meskel," said Tesfay.
Legend has it that the 'true cross' on which Jesus was killed was found by Queen Helena, mother of the Roman Emperor Constantine I, in the fourth century.
"In order to find the cross that had been buried for a long time, Constantine's mother, Queen Helena travelled from Rome to Jerusalem and made a bonfire. The smoke from the bonfire lit up the sky showing where the cross was hidden. So the Queen started digging at that place and this what we commemorate in September," explained Memihir Menkir Haile, a religious teacher in the Ethiopian Orthodox Church.
The Meskel celebration includes a bonfire known as Demera, which acts as a symbol of the vision that showed Queen Helena the location of the cross.
The fire, built several stories high is lit by priests carrying effigies of Christ and crosses on sticks. Its flames send sparks high into the night sky as the crowd sing and dance to the sound of traditional drums below.
Emebet Hadgu came to Addis Ababa for the festival after living abroad for eight years. She says the festival holds a special place for many Orthodox Christians.
"I grew up in church singing in the choir therefore I have a deep love for this ceremony and I
came from abroad at this time mainly to attend this event and I can't tell you how happy I feel. The ceremony is just amazing, said Hadgu.
Apart from its symbolism, Orthodox Ethiopians believe Meskel is a time of great sacrifice and the celebration of the cross brings enlightenment and hope.

Kategna restaurant was one of the best restaurants I ate at while I was in Addis Ababa. The menu is extremely extensive, and the food is amazing! More info: http://migrationology.com/2014/01/kategna-restaurant-addis-ababa-ethiopia/
One of the highlights of visiting Ethiopia, is eating Ethiopian food, and when you're in Addis Ababa there are many amazing restaurants to choose from. Kategna Restaurant is a well known favorite for locals that live in Addis Ababa, straight up because it's a nice environment, and most importantly, the food is outstanding. During the course of my stay in Addis Ababa, I went to Kategna restaurant a number of times, unable to resist the delicious flavors and nice atmosphere of the restaurant.
I began with a giant platter of Yetsom Beyaynetu, a mix of vegetarianan fasting dishes. The mix came out, beautifully arranged on a giant platter, filled with the wonderful assortment of different curries and stews. There was misir wat, a red lentil stew, some different kinds of salads, and gomen, which is collard greens. Though it might not be a traditional method of ordering, I decided to go for another dish known as doro wat, a famous Ethiopian food that's a chicken stew made from onions, berbere spices, and lots of butter. Also, the egg in the doro wat is one of the highlights. The doro wat was scooped directly onto the pile of injera, mingling with the other wonderful ingredients.
As you can already imagine, I was so incredibly excited to begin my feast at Kategna restaurant, my mouth juices were flowing. There were two different colors of injera that I got served, something I didn't really notice from other restaurants I ate at while I was in Addis Ababa. But after tasting both, they really almost tasted identical. I quickly grabbed pieces of injera, ripping it off the roll and digging it into the juicy curries. The flavor combination were out of control delicious. The vegetarian mix of yetsom beaynetu was excellent. Then it was time to devour the doro wat. The piece of chicken was oddly small, just a time bone with a little bit of meat, but the sauce and egg together were so delicious, that I honestly almost forgot about the chicken itself. The sauce was dripping with flavor!
Despite Kategna restaurant being on the nicer side of the restaurant spectrum, the prices are incredibly reasonable. For me entire feast in the video, including the coffee at the end, our total bill came to 230 ETB ($11.85), and believe it or not, I was actually stuffed full for almost the entire day afterwards, I hardly have to eat any dinner! There are two main locations of the restaurant in Addis Ababa, one just off Gabon street (the one featured in this video) and the other is just off Bole road very near to the airport. I went to both locations during my time in Addis, and they were both of equal greatness, and even the atmosphere was just about the same.
When you visit Addis Ababa, one of the best restaurants is Kategna restaurant, and you should not miss out on the opportunity to eat there!

A trip to London might as well be a trip through history. This city has long been a hub for finance, education, and culture, and is full of modern construction mixed with ancient buildings.
Your London tour must include St. Paul’s Cathedral, one of its most well-known churches. You’ll also want to see the Tower of London, the Palace of Westminster, and Westminster Abbey for exquisite examples of the city’s famous architectural landmarks. Walk or jog through numerous green spaces, among them Hyde Park and Green Park, in the center of London.
Continue your London sightseeing in the West End, where you’ll find ancient buildings converted into modern shops, restaurants, bars, and shows. You’ll find one of the largest theatre districts in the world here, and can take in a different play almost every night of the week.
For a real treat, climb aboard the London Eye, a giant, rotating Ferris wheel, and see the old and new parts of the city all at once.

One of the best things to do in Addis Ababa is drink Ethiopian coffee. Looking for other top things to do: http://migrationology.com/2013/12/11-of-the-best-things-to-do-in-addis-ababa-ethiopia/
As you probably already know, Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee - coffee is originally from Ethiopia, and it's still known to grow some of the best quality beans in the entire world. When you're in Ethiopia, coffee is never hard to find. It's an important part of the Ethiopian culture. In Addis Ababa there are a number of different kinds of Ethiopian coffee to drink. All over the place there are cafe's where you'll find European and especially Italian style coffees like espressos and macchiatos. At Ethiopian restaurants you'll find the traditional style of coffee known as buna. And along the sides of the streets and all over the city and neighborhoods you'll find tiny shoebox coffee shops that serve local coffee.
Walking down the street in Addis Ababa you'll frequently get a blast of fresh coffee roasting in your face. You'll know right away that you can step off the side of the road and dip into the small coffee shop for one or ever three cups of coffee. This video was taken at a small coffee shop just next to a hotel that I was staying in. The girl welcomed us in to the scent of delicious coffee being roasted. Her little coffee shop was both a coffee shop and a store selling khat, a leaf that you chew.
When we arrived she was roasting up a batch of coffee beans until dark and fragrant. I chose a seat on a side turned soda crate and watched her make the coffee. When the beans were roasted she transferred them to a mortar and pestle. Using a few swift pounds she impressively had the coffee beans pounded and turned into a fine powder in just a few minutes. From there, the ground coffee was spooned into the jebena, a clay vessel used to make traditional Ethiopian coffee. She then added water to the top of the beans and set the jebena on the hot charcoal to let it boil. Once the coffee had finished brewing, she then covered the coffee pot with a strainer and poured dark brewed Ethiopian coffee into each individual cups. Lots of locals like a ton of sugar in their coffee, but I enjoyed just a half a spoon so it wasn't too sweet. It was marvelous coffee, thick, full bodied, and rich with flavor. When it was really sweet it almost had a chocolatey flavor. Though there wasn't any popcorn at this particular spot, drinking coffee with a small bowl of popcorn on the side is common, especially the a coffee ceremony or at a restaurant.
One of the greatest things about Ethiopia is Ethiopian coffee and I didn't have a bad cup the entire time I was there. If you love coffee, Ethiopia is a country you need to visit as soon as you have a chance.

wn.com/Drinking Ethiopian Coffee In Addis Ababa
Debre Libanos:
Debre Libanos (ደብረ፡ሊባኖስ, Däbrä Libanos) is a monastery in Ethiopia, lying northwest of Addis Ababa in the Semien Shewa Zone of the Oromia Region. Founded in the thirteenth century by Saint Tekle Haymanot, according to the belief, he meditated in a cave for 29 years. The monastery's chief abbot, called the Ichege, was the second most powerful official in the Ethiopian Church after the Abuna. The monastery complex sits on a terrace between a cliff and the gorge of one of the tributaries of the Abbay River. None of the original buildings of Debre Libanos survive, although David Buxton suspected "there are interesting things still to be found among the neighbouring cliffs." Current buildings include the church over Tekle Haymanot's tomb, which Emperor Haile Selassie ordered constructed in 1961; a slightly older Church of the Cross, where Buxton was told a fragment of the True Cross is preserved; and five religious schools. The cave where the saint lived is in the nearby cliffs, which one travel guide describes as a five-minute walk away. This cave contains a spring, whose water is considered holy and is the object of pilgrimages.
According to David Buxton, the original route to Debre Libanos was through a cleft in the cliffs that line the eastern side of the Abay. In the later 20th century a road was laid from the main Addis Ababa – Debre Marqos highway to the monastery; it is a little more than four kilometers long.

Travel video about destination Aksum in Ethiopia.
Historic Aksum, in northern Ethiopia, was once the capital of a mighty kingdom. On the site of two previous religious buildings, its ancient cathedral was last rebuilt in 1665. Thrones constructed of stone have witnessed the coronation of various monarchs whose Ethiopian Orthodox faith spread far and wide. Aksum is also referred to as Ethiopian Rome, capital of the oldest Christian kingdom in the world, the largest outside the Roman Empire. In the small chapel next to the cathedral a monk is said to protect the Ark Of The Covenant, the true sanctuary of Ethiopia. It is believed to contain the tables of the ten commandments which God sent to Moses. On today's western periphery of Dongur lie the ruins of a relatively modest complex.popularly known as the Palace Of The Queen Of Sheba. The bible states that the legendary Queen of the South visited King Solomon in Jerusalem in order for him to teach her the Jewish faith.Although little remains of the former capital of the Aksumitic kingdom, Ethiopia's holiest site, it continues to be a place of mystery and legend.
