About one billion people live in slums and the highest concentration of them can be found in Asia.
As part of our Urban Planet series we travelled to the Philippines where about 20 million people live in slums.
One tenth of slum dwellers live in the capital Manila, in neighbourhoods like this one in the Tondo District.
Tondo is one of the oldest areas of Manila, and dates back about 1,000 years.
But the past has been erased by the present. Today it's one of the most densely populated places on earth. There are 80,000 people per square kilometre.
The United Nations says many of them lack adequate water, housing, sanitation, education, health and employment.
Chairman Tom was born and brought up in Tondo, and runs a community of about 4,000 slum dwellers there.
He has six children, and according to Tom "everyday is a struggle".
He sells water for a living and he also makes US$40 a month from renting out property that he built on government land.
"What I did is illegal," says Chairman Tom. "But I have to help my people because 90% of them are much worse off than me".
Jemma, a single mother, lives alongside the bridge in Tondo.
She and her four children live in a tiny room with no water, no electricity and no sanitation.
Jemma washes clothes to make a living. None of her children go to school and her 14-year-old daughter is already working.
"I sometimes get angry with myself because I cannot provide for my children," says Jemma, who starts to weep.
Estella and her husband Cricencio are an elderly couple who moved to Tondo slum from the countryside 20 years ago.
They have seven children and they live at the end of an alleyway.
"I have spent many sleepless nights worrying about the threat of fires," says Estella.
Her husband Cricencio has another major worry. "The land that we live on is owned privately. We have no contract, no rights, nothing," he laments.
Alicia's house is a two minute walk from Estella and Cricencio's, and she is one of the lucky few who was given rights to her land by the government who once owned it.
"I have the deeds," beams Alicia, a single mother with two children. But her smile fades as she reflects on the reality of living in the slum.
"I live about 20 metres from the river," says Alicia. Every year when the typhoons come, my house gets flooded, and sometimes I am knee deep in water.
The river which runs through Tondo is a great source of entertainment for the many young people who live in the slum.
Children spend hours swimming in it, but parts of it are choked with garbage. Some of the slum dwellers, like Estella, admit that they throw throw excrement in, because they have no toilet.
The river is so polluted that the United Nations says it poses a serious risk to health.
A woman is fast asleep on a table in the alleyway underneath the bridge.
She is oblivious to the constant sound of children at play or doing house work.
The government has admitted that the population is growing at an alarming rate and the United Nations says the Philippines has one of the highest rates of population growth in the region.
The average family size is six.
Chairman Tom says some things have improved.
There are health clinics and this year electricity was brought in. Unlike the Mayor, Tom believes in family planning.
"That's why we have programmes here," he says.
As a group of children play outside Chairman Tom's house, he admits that the number of kids is a problem.
But this is just one of a number of worrying trends in Manila. Chairman Tom instances lack of employment and the ownership of the land.
Despite the obstacles he remains upbeat. "This is what God has given me," says Chairman Tom. "And this is my home."

A slum, as defined by the United Nations agency UN-HABITAT, is a run-down area of a city characterized by substandard housing and squalor and lacking in tenure security. According to the United Nations, the percentage of urban dwellers living in slums decreased from 47 percent to 37 percent in the developing world between 1990 and 2005. However, due to rising population, and the rise especially in urban populations, the number of slum dwellers is rising. One billion people worldwide live in slums and the figure will likely grow to 2 billion by 2030.
The term has traditionally referred to housing areas that were once relatively affluent but which deteriorated as the original dwellers moved on to newer and better parts of the city, but has come to include the vast informal settlements found in cities in the developing world.
Many shack dwellers vigorously oppose the description of their communities as 'slums' arguing that this results in them being pathologised and then, often, subject to threats of evictions. Many academics have vigorously criticized UN-Habitat and the World Bank arguing that their 'Cities Without Slums' Campaign has led directly to a massive increase in forced evictions.

Kanye Omari West (

West has had 5 songs exceed 3 million in digital sales as of July 2011, with "Gold Digger" selling 3,086,000, "Stronger" selling 4,402,000, "Heartless" selling 3,742,000, "E.T." selling over 4,000,000 and "Love Lockdown" selling over 3,000,000 placing him third in overall digital sales of the past decade. He has sold over 30 million digital songs in the United States making him one of the best-selling digital artists of all-time.

About one billion people live in slums and the highest concentration of them can be found in Asia. As part of our Urban Planet series we travelled to the Philippines where about 20 million people live in slums. One tenth of slum dwellers live in the capital Manila, in neighbourhoods like this one in the Tondo District. Tondo is one of the oldest areas of Manila, and dates back about 1,000 years. But the past has been erased by the present. Today it's one of the most densely populated places on earth. There are 80,000 people per square kilometre. The United Nations says many of them lack adequate water, housing, sanitation, education, health and employment. Chairman Tom was born and brought up in Tondo, and runs a community of about 4,000 slum dwellers there. He has six children, and according to Tom "everyday is a struggle". He sells water for a living and he also makes US$40 a month from renting out property that he built on government land. "What I did is illegal," says Chairman Tom. "But I have to help my people because 90% of them are much worse off than me". Jemma, a single mother, lives alongside the bridge in Tondo. She and her four children live in a tiny room with no water, no electricity and no sanitation. Jemma washes clothes to make a living. None of her children go to school and her 14-year-old daughter is already working. "I sometimes get angry with myself because I cannot provide for my children," says Jemma, who starts to weep. Estella and her husband Cricencio are an elderly couple who moved to Tondo slum from the countryside 20 years ago. They have seven children and they live at the end of an alleyway. "I have spent many sleepless nights worrying about the threat of fires," says Estella. Her husband Cricencio has another major worry. "The land that we live on is owned privately. We have no contract, no rights, nothing," he laments. Alicia's house is a two minute walk from Estella and Cricencio's, and she is one of the lucky few who was given rights to her land by the government who once owned it. "I have the deeds," beams Alicia, a single mother with two children. But her smile fades as she reflects on the reality of living in the slum. "I live about 20 metres from the river," says Alicia. Every year when the typhoons come, my house gets flooded, and sometimes I am knee deep in water. The river which runs through Tondo is a great source of entertainment for the many young people who live in the slum. Children spend hours swimming in it, but parts of it are choked with garbage. Some of the slum dwellers, like Estella, admit that they throw throw excrement in, because they have no toilet. The river is so polluted that the United Nations says it poses a serious risk to health. A woman is fast asleep on a table in the alleyway underneath the bridge. She is oblivious to the constant sound of children at play or doing house work. The government has admitted that the population is growing at an alarming rate and the United Nations says the Philippines has one of the highest rates of population growth in the region. The average family size is six. Chairman Tom says some things have improved. There are health clinics and this year electricity was brought in. Unlike the Mayor, Tom believes in family planning. "That's why we have programmes here," he says. As a group of children play outside Chairman Tom's house, he admits that the number of kids is a problem. But this is just one of a number of worrying trends in Manila. Chairman Tom instances lack of employment and the ownership of the land. Despite the obstacles he remains upbeat. "This is what God has given me," says Chairman Tom. "And this is my home." -

Plot: The fourth and last of the George A. Hirliman sold O'Brien's contract to RKO, which then produced 18 series westerns starring O'Brien that ended when O'Brien went into the Navy at the outbreak of WW II. Long-time (past and future) O'Brien director David Howard served as Hirliman's Associate Producer on this film. "Windjammer" finds O'Brien as a subpoena server ordered to serve a subpoena on Brandon Evans (The Commondore) for a senate inquiry or lose his job. Natural Disaster : Manila slum life in the Philippines
About one billion people live in slums and the highest concentration of them can be found in Asia. As part of our Urban Planet series we travelled to the Philippines where about 20 million people live in slums. One tenth of slum dwellers live in the capital Manila, in neighbourhoods like this one in the Tondo District. Tondo is one of the oldest areas of Manila, and dates back about 1,000 years. But the past has been erased by the present. Today it's one of the most densely populated places on earth. There are 80,000 people per square kilometre. The United Nations says many of them lack adequate water, housing, sanitation, education, health and employment. Like many of its Asian neighbors, the Philippines has been site of rapid economic growth over the past two decades. Following a period of martial law and strict control over rural provinces, peasants and farmers began moving to the nation's capital, Manila, in the 1980s looking for better lives. However, many of these people remained on the margins of both society and the city itself. As the population boomed, slums began cropping up. VICE Japan traveled to Manila in order to investigate conditions in one such slum inside Navotas Cemetery, where 6,000 men, women, and children currently live amid the graves and excavated human bones. Poverty tourism is a small but growing sector of the the tourism industry wherein primarily wealthy western tourists visit the poorest places on earth, most of which are in the developing world. About one billion people live in slums and the highest concentration of them can be found in Asia.
As part of our Urban Planet series we travelled to the Philippines where about 20 million people live in slums.
One tenth of slum dwellers live in the capital Manila, in neighbourhoods like this one in the Tondo District.
Tondo is one of the oldest areas of Manila, and dates back about 1,000 years.
But the past has been erased by the present. Today it's one of the most densely populated places on earth. There are 80,000 people per square kilometre.
The United Nations says many of them lack adequate water, housing, sanitation, education, health and employment.
Chairman Tom was born and brought up in Tondo, and runs a community of about 4,000 slum dwellers there.
He has six children, and according to Tom "everyday is a struggle".
He sells water for a living and he also makes US$40 a month from renting out property that he built on government land.
"What I did is illegal," says Chairman Tom. "But I have to help my people because 90% of them are much worse off than me".
Jemma, a single mother, lives alongside the bridge in Tondo.
She and her four children live in a tiny room with no water, no electricity and no sanitation.
Jemma washes clothes to make a living. None of her children go to school and her 14-year-old daughter is already working.
"I sometimes get angry with myself because I cannot provide for my children," says Jemma, who starts to weep.
Estella and her husband Cricencio are an elderly couple who moved to Tondo slum from the countryside 20 years ago.
They have seven children and they live at the end of an alleyway.
"I have spent many sleepless nights worrying about the threat of fires," says Estella.
Her husband Cricencio has another major worry. "The land that we live on is owned privately. We have no contract, no rights, nothing," he laments.
Alicia's house is a two minute walk from Estella and Cricencio's, and she is one of the lucky few who was given rights to her land by the government who once owned it.
"I have the deeds," beams Alicia, a single mother with two children. But her smile fades as she reflects on the reality of living in the slum.
"I live about 20 metres from the river," says Alicia. Every year when the typhoons come, my house gets flooded, and sometimes I am knee deep in water.
The river which runs through Tondo is a great source of entertainment for the many young people who live in the slum.
Children spend hours swimming in it, but parts of it are choked with garbage. Some of the slum dwellers, like Estella, admit that they throw throw excrement in, because they have no toilet.
The river is so polluted that the United Nations says it poses a serious risk to health.
A woman is fast asleep on a table in the alleyway underneath the bridge.
She is oblivious to the constant sound of children at play or doing house work.
The government has admitted that the population is growing at an alarming rate and the United Nations says the Philippines has one of the highest rates of population growth in the region.
The average family size is six.
Chairman Tom says some things have improved.
There are health clinics and this year electricity was brought in. Unlike the Mayor, Tom believes in family planning.
"That's why we have programmes here," he says.
As a group of children play outside Chairman Tom's house, he admits that the number of kids is a problem.
But this is just one of a number of worrying trends in Manila. Chairman Tom instances lack of employment and the ownership of the land.
Despite the obstacles he remains upbeat. "This is what God has given me," says Chairman Tom. "And this is my home."

Like many of its Asian neighbors, the Philippines has been site of rapid economic growth over the past two decades. Following a period of martial law and strict control over rural provinces, peasants and farmers began moving to the nation's capital, Manila, in the 1980s looking for better lives. However, many of these people remained on the margins of both society and the city itself. As the population boomed, slums began cropping up.
VICE Japan traveled to Manila in order to investigate conditions in one such slum inside Navotas Cemetery, where 6,000 men, women, and children currently live amid the graves and excavated human bones.

The tower was originally intended to be a symbol of Caracas' bright financial future, complete with a rooftop helipad, but construction stopped because of a banking crisis and the sudden death of the tower's namesake, David Brillembourg.

Poverty tourism is a small but growing sector of the the tourism industry wherein primarily wealthy western tourists visit the poorest places on earth, most of which are in the developing world. Mumbai, Rio de Janeiro, Nairobi and Johannesburg are perhaps the most popular locations for these trips, but a new tour was recently setup in Manila, the Filipino capital well-known for chaos, congestion and inequality.
Manila isn't the poorest city on earth but it is the most densely populated with about half of it's residents living in slums. One of the most remarkable is Smokey Mountain, a community literally situated on a garbage dump.
This is where Smokey Tours, a local nonprofit, offers to take tourists for a small fee.
Not surprisingly, poverty tourism is controversial. Critics have labeled these tours degrading. While supporters contend that they promote social awareness and help the local economy.
We wanted to find out for ourselves if Slum tourism really did distill poverty into entertainment or if there was more to it.

Poverty tourism is a small but growing sector of the the tourism industry wherein primarily wealthy western tourists visit the poorest places on earth, most of which are in the developing world. Mumbai, Rio de Janeiro, Nairobi and Johannesburg are perhaps the most popular locations for these trips, but a new tour was recently setup in Manila, the Filipino capital well-known for chaos, congestion and inequality.
Manila isn't the poorest city on earth but it is the most densely populated with about half of it's residents living in slums. One of the most remarkable is Smokey Mountain, a community literally situated on a garbage dump.
This is where Smokey Tours, a local nonprofit, offers to take tourists for a small fee.
Not surprisingly, poverty tourism is controversial. Critics have labeled these tours degrading. While supporters contend that they promote social awareness and help the local economy.
We wanted to find out for ourselves if Slum tourism really did distill poverty into entertainment or if there was more to it.
