Travel video about destination Mumbai in India.
Formerly known as Bombay, Mumbai is one of the largest cities in the world with a population of around 17 million. It was constructed on a headland that extends for 22 kilometres into the Arabian Sea.
In 1853, Mumbai had its first railroad and the Indian rail network was soon extended. The Victoria Terminus was built and is one of the most impressive train stations in the world. The lavishly decorated brown sandstone building dates back to1888 and is the most beautiful Victorian Gothic building in India, built during the high season of British colonial rule.
The Dhobi Ghats or 'Banks of the Washers', is the name of the 'Biggest laundrette in the world'. In the open air, hundreds of dhobis do much of the city's 'laundry'. In small allotments surrounded by low walls, launderers wash from dusk to dawn.
On Malabar Hill, between the villas of numerous film stars and luxury apartments, is the fascinating Adishwarji Jain Temple, a good place in which to gain an insight into the harsh rituals of the wealthy faithful who worshipped the first Jain saints. The legendary Hotel Taj Mahal Palace, with its striking façade and red cupolas, had a spectacular origin.
When industrial mogul, Tata, was refused entry to a British hotel restaurant by a sign that stated, FOR EUROPEANS ONLY, he decided to build the city's finest hotel.
Nowhere else are India's many remarkable contrasts so obvious and nowhere else can India be experienced so intensely as in Mumbai, mega metropolis and unique Gateway to India!

A store with a rich history and a wide variety of Indian handicrafts and goods. (Mumbai, India)
Speaker 1: The Bombay Store is a speciality store that exclusively retails only Indian made products. It is a popular store to pick up some very good quality souvenirs, plus, it is also a historical landmark. Freedom Fighter Bal Gangadhar Tilak founded the store in nineteen hundred and six. Now, this was when the Swadeshi movement was at its height. This was when all freedom fighting patriots disowned everything that was not made in India. In fact, until recently this store was known as the Bombay Swadeshi Stores. While the store has multiple branches in various cities in India. I am at a signature store, here, in South Bombay.
There is a wide range of Indian handicrafts in sandalwood, metal, wood, stone, marble, etcetera. The Bombay Store has handicrafts and exquisite temple carvings for your home decor. These handicrafts are source from across the lenght and breadth of India and Bombay Store focuses mainly on artisans from rural India. Speaker 2. Chetan Pathare: I like the quality of what they carry. I like the variety of what they carry, there prices are reasonable. There are more choices when you come here. Speaker 1: These writing accessories made of handmade paper are also a good buy. The store is also popular for its carpets, rugs and wall hangings in silk, cotton or jute. The soft furnishings available in the Bombay Store are made up of naturally occurring fibers, either pure silk or pure cotton.
The Bombay Store also has a wide range of apparel for men and for women. Women especially love these stoles, scarves and shawls available here. Other popular gift options are fashion jewelry, leather products and handbags. The Bombay Store has a wide range of exotic herbal teas from Darjeeling, Nilgiris and from Sikkim. The perfumed candles, aroma therapy oils, incense sticks and herbal cosmetics also sell very well. Speaker 3. Benjan J. Bharucha: We have had a lot of dignitaries visit us in the past and in the present. We have had Sorojni Nidu, El Hara Roswell, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru . Now, we have people like Ustad zakhir Hussain, Juhi Chawala, Vidya Balan. Around thirtty percent of our clients here are still foreigners, the rest are NRIs returning expatriates. A lot of Indians who visit abroad who love to carry something for their relatives and friends who live abroad. Speaker 1: I am Premjit Singh, showing you Bombay.

It might surprise some people that South Mumbai is doted with Quaint Irani joints, which are known as Iranian restaurants. And these restaurants serve Parsi food. The Parsi community or the Zoroastrians, they came to India from Iran a few centuries back. The most popular among these Parsi restaurants is this, the Britannia, located at Ballard estate. This building was designed by George Wittet, the architect of the Gateway of India amongst others. The heritage of this building is very apparent and the interiors make it even more quaint.
The restaurant itself is about a century old. It is run by the Kohinoor family of the Parsi community. They have a simple philosophy that there is no love greater than the love of eating. "Britannia Restaurant has been in existence from 1923. When I was born my father started the restaurant". The late Mrs. Kohinoor's Berry Pulao is exclusive to this restaurant. Now the berries are imported all the way from Iran and they are cooked with long green basmati rice with marinated meat, and then garnished with fried onions and dry fruits. It is an entire meal in itself and the recipe is a well guarded secret.
"And this berry, my wife brought the recipe from Iran. Here she has improvised by adding a little special masala and kabab. And next comes the Khansak, the Sali Boti. Khansak, which is chicken or mutton served with brown rice and lentils. Or you could try the Sali Boti. Now, boti is mutton served with gravy and is garnished with thin fries. This goes very well with Indian bread or roti.
Britannia also has some seafood option, you could try the Bomil fry or the fried Bombay duck and also the patrani-mach. "Patrani Machi, in Parsi language, 'patra' means leaf. And now this pomphret fish is cut into big pieces and they are wrapped in banana leaves. There are chutney added to that, and then they are wrapped in banana leaves and steamed. So this becomes Patrani Machi".
You can also ask for some raspberry soda to complement your meal, but make sure you leave some space in your tummy for some home-made Caramel Custard. "During World War II, these premises were requisitioned by British Army. So, in 1947 when I got back the place, I just painted it plain. We did not habe money to spend for that type of ambience and renovation". I am Premjit showing you Mumbai. "We are all working in unity to keep the tradition going".

Come to Dubai, the ancient City of Gold, for your next vacation.
Modernity and antiquity collide in this vibrant city. Shop at the same spice market locals have been visiting for generations, then visit the stores in the Gold Souk, a jewelry-centered traditional marketplace. For a more modern shopping experience, go to the Dubai Mall, home to over 1200 stores, an underwater zoo, and KidZania®, a “city” where children can roleplay various careers.
To soak up some of the legendary Dubai sunshine, simply step outside. Take in the view of the city from the observation deck of the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world. Continue your Dubai tour by wandering through the exotic buildings and resorts, or visit some of the public beaches. If you’d like to try something a little different and don’t mind paying a small fee, you can also attend local hotel beaches even if you aren’t staying there.
You can’t finish your Dubai sightseeing without a trip into the desert itself. Ride a camel, go sandboarding, or just stand out on the dunes and marvel at the beauty of it all.

Welcome to Tokyo, the capital of Japan and the epitome of the word “megacity.”
In this vast metropolis, ancient traditions blend with futuristic buildings, and your Tokyo sightseeing will take you to representations of each. Pay your respects at temples set in forested hillsides, then flex your credit card in one of the shopping districts, before sitting down to a five-star meal…all in one day.
Your Tokyo tour begins with the subway and train system, which will take you all over this sprawling city. Tokyo is home to some 35 million people, many of which you’ll meet as its public transit carries you throughout its many neighborhoods. Make a stop in Asakusa, a temple district nestled in leafy trees with skyscrapers towering in the background. There you’ll visit Nakamisi Dori, a street loaded with food vendors and religious charms. Get to know the city a little better in the Harajuku district, home to cutting-edge fashion, a thriving, youth-centered culture, and the famous Yoyogi Park. The park stands out in stern contrast to the rest of the neighborhood; this sprawling, 134-acre green space is where locals slow down after a frenzied week of work and play.
As night falls, make your way to Shinjuku. Many of Tokyo’s premier restaurants and pubs span Shinjuku’s streets, and you can indulge in succulent 5-star meals or sample with fast food from local vendors. Watch a movie, do some karaoke, and linger with fellow travelers and friendly locals alike.
What was your favorite part of Tokyo?

The city of Tainan rises from the southwestern coastal plains of Taiwan, and is often
called The Birthplace of Taiwan.
In 1624, Dutch traders established a fort on the sandy peninsula Anping. Wander the
fort’s ramparts and the nearby ruins of a merchant house held together by banyan roots.
Closer to the city center rises Chihkan Tower, Taiwan’s first official seat of power.
Today, the tower is the keeping place of many of the city’s earliest records and treasures.
With over 2000 temples and shrines, Tainan is also known as The Kyoto of Taiwan.
Highlights include the Sacrificial Rites Martial Temple and the Confucian Temple.
Although Tainan ceded its political power to Taipei over a century ago, the city remains a
powerhouse in one of life’s most important aspects, food! Forget chic restaurants, the
best food here is found on the streets and the city is often called The City of Snacks.
One of the best places to sample Tainan specialties, like its legendary oyster omelets, is at
its night markets. Tainan offers over two dozen night markets, but none quite compare to
the sheer size, color and energy of the city’s favorite, the Flower Night Market.
When it’s time to work off all that food, the city has plenty of places to stretch out, such
as Tainan Park and Taijiang National Park.
Locals love to say, “Taipei is Taiwan’s pocket, but Tainan, is the country’s heart.”

https://www.expedia.com/Seoul.d178308.Destination-Travel-Guides
Watch our video highlighting some of the best things to do in Seoul, but beware—it just might cause you to start planning your next Korean vacation!
Join us in Seoul, the capital of South Korea. This intriguing destination boasts an innovative, forward-thinking culture, but it’s also steeped in history. While traveling around this northwestern city, you’ll come across massive shopping complexes just on the outskirts of ancient temples and palaces.
Take a trip back in time at the Changdeokgung Palace, which was built in 1405 as one of the Five Grand Palaces established by the Joseon Dynasty. Though all the city’s palaces were burned down during the 1592 Japanese invasion, Changdeokgung was the first to be reconstructed. Venture around Injeongjeon, the throne hall, and step across the Geumcheongyo Bridge, which is considered one of the city’s oldest bridges. Deoksugung is another one of the Five Grand Palaces, and it’s unique in that it incorporates a Western-style garden. Don’t miss the other royal grounds, including Changgyeonggung Palace, Gyeongbokgung Palace, and Unhyeongung Palace.
If you’re really looking to get a sense of the more modern, Seoul tourism scene, prepare to shop ’til you drop! This city takes shopping seriously, as you can find stores and markets scattered all around town. COEX Mall is Korea’s largest underground shopping mall, while Namdaemun Market features hundreds of vendors selling almost anything you can imagine, from kimchi to kitchenware. In the mood for some late-night shopping? Discover some of the best finds in fashion at Dongdaemun Market, which is open all through the night, closing around 7 a.m.
Continue your Seoul city tour by making your way to the theaters to witness some marvelous performances. These theaters know how to put on a show–Korean martial artists, dazzling dancers, and talented musicians take the stage at the Korea House, Jeongdong Theater, and Seoul Arts Center. Next, visit the Gyeongbokgung Palace to catch the opening and closing of the royal palace gates and the royal guard changing, or check out the Bosingak daily bell-ringing ceremony.
Whether you decide to join guided Seoul tours or prefer to venture around the Korean destination on your own terms, you won’t be disappointed. From royal grounds to theater productions, the entertainment is endless. Press play on our travel guide video to get inspiration for your next trip to South Korea.

Bombay is a 1995 Indian Tamil drama film directed by Mani Ratnam, starring Arvind Swamy and Manisha Koirala, with music composed by A. R. Rahman. The film is centred on events, particularly during the period of December 1992 to January 1993 in India, and the controversy surrounding the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya, its subsequent demolition on 6 December 1992 and increased religious tensions in the city of Bombay (now Mumbai) that led to the Bombay Riots. It is the second in Ratnam's trilogy of films that depict human relationships against a background of Indian politics, including Roja (1992) and Dil Se.. (1998)
Plot
Thirumalai Nayakkar palace where "Kannalane" was shot
Shekhar (Arvind Swamy) is the son of an orthodox Hindu Narayana Pillai (Nassar) living in a coastal village in Tamil Nadu. A journalism student studying in Bombay, Shekhar visits home to be with his family. On one of his return trips, he notices Shaila Banu (Manisha Koirala), a Muslim schoolgirl in the village and loses his heart to her. Initially shy, Shaila seeks to distance herself from Shekhar, but after frequent run-ins, and days of pursuit, Shaila begins to like Shekhar. Eventually, they both fall in love.
Shekhar meets Shaila's father Basheer Ahmed (Kitty) and reveals he wants to marry her. Basheer throws him out, citing difference in religions. Shekhar reveals his interest to his father Pillai, who becomes angry, meets Basheer and gets into an abusive argument with him. Upset with rejection from both families, Shekhar leaves the village and returns to Bombay. Through Shaila's friend, he sends her a letter and a ticket for her to travel to Bombay. However, she is undecided; Basheer comes to know of her regular letters from Shekhar and plans to get her married immediately to stop this relation growing further. Left with no choice, Shaila leaves the village with the ticket sent by Shekhar and reaches Bombay. They get married and lead a happy life. Shaila conceives and delivers twins who are named Kabir Narayan and Kamal Basheer. The twins are raised in both religions. Shekhar continues to work as a journalist, while Shaila takes care of home and children. After six years, Shekhar and Shaila settle down in their life and begin the process of re-establishing relationship with their respective families.
When the Babri Masjid is demolished by Hindu fundamentalists on 6 December 1992, riots break out in Bombay. Kabir and Kamal, who have gone to buy groceries, get caught in the riots; eventually, Shekhar and Shaila save them and reach home safely. Narayana Pillai, who receives the news of the riots, rushes to Bombay to meet his son and his family. Everyone is happy with his arrival, and he stays with them. Soon, Basheer also comes with his wife and all of them live together happily for a few days. Both Pillai and Basheer are happy with their grandchildren and wish to be with them.
On 5 January 1993, when two murders are interpreted as communal killings, another riot breaks up in Bombay, raising tensions between Hindu and Muslims and they clash in the streets. Hundreds of poor people belonging to both the religions die. The mansion where Shekhar stays with his family also gets burnt. When Shekhar evacuates everyone, Narayana Pillai, Basheer and his wife get caught in the fire accident and die. The children who run to save themselves get separated from their parents. Shekhar and Shaila begin to search for them and they go through several tense moments. Shekhar participates in the movement to stop the riots with other religious leaders (who realise the futility of the riots by then) and succeeds. When the riots stop, the children who were saved by people from different religions, also turn up and join their parents.

October 18, 2014 - Indie Rockers, Bombay Bicycle Club, full set at House of Blues Boston. The genre–bending group, formed in 2005 out of North London, put on a high octane set that spanned their four full length albums and three EPs. The sold–out Saturday night crowd witnessed an unforgettable performance including multiple tracks from their 2014 album, So Long, See You Tomorrow as well as hits from their earlier work.
Frontman, Jack Steadman, and bassist, Ed Nash, sat down with WGBH Music before the show to talk about everything from the origin of the band’s name, saying “Hello, Dublin!” in Belfast, and the evolution of their songwriting across their four albums.
Front Row Boston is produced by WGBH Music and Crossroads Presents in association with NPR Music.
