The cause of ligament tears is pretty simple. It's almost always going to involve some sort of a traumatic event. The ligaments in your knee are fairly strong by nature. They're thick. There are two ligaments that run on the outside of your knee called your medial collateral ligament and your lateral collateral ligament. Then you have two ligaments on the inside of your knee called your ACL and PCL, or anterior cruciate ligament and your posterior cruciate ligament. So you have four ligaments that are there to support you knee.
The medial and lateral collateral ligaments, they're going to require you to either experience what's called a varus or a valgus force to the knee. That's basically a blow to the side of your knee, the inner side or the outer side, and like a rubber band, if you take a blow to the inside of your knee, it's going to create what's called a varus force, and then the outer ligament is susceptible to a tear. A blow to the outside of the knee is going to create a valgus force, and that's going to create a problem with the medial collateral on the inside of your knee. Based on that, the medial collateral ligament is much more susceptible to injury as we typically take our blows from the outside and creating a tear to the medial ligament.
The LCL is often spared from trauma and often stays intact. On the inside of your knee, you have your PCL and your ACL. The posterior or PCL is in a nicer place inside your knee. So it's going to require more of a blunt force to the front, like in a football game or something, to create that tear.
And lastly is the ACL. I saved the ACL for last because that is the most susceptible ligament that gets injured. You may know one or two people that have had ACL injuries and ACL tears before. The reason why it's such a common one is its location inside the knee, and therefore it's so susceptible to both blows to the outer and inner, blows to the front, but it's also very susceptible to other traumatic events like landing long on your feet or simply twisting your knee when you're playing sports, or if you're running really fast and you have to decelerate on a dime, that might actually literally tear the ACL. So it's in a weird place. It's in a tricky spot inside your knee. It's much more susceptible to tears, and we deal with that the most in the clinic. LCLs being the least common and ACLs being the most common.

Athletes are especially at risk for ACL tears, although they may occur in active workers and the general population as well.
The ACL can tear completely or partially. It is unable to repair itself. When the ACL is injured, it is common to see other surrounding knee structures damaged as well. Some cases of ACL tears are treated with non-surgical methods. However, there are several surgical options that successfully restore knee strength and stability.

LIGAMENT BASICS NARRATION
Very simply ligaments are around to hold our bones together. It’s all part of this thing we like to call the musculoskeletal system. People sometimes confuse tendon’s with ligaments. While they have some similarities, tendons attach muscle to bone and ligaments attach bone to bone.
If you look at any joint, you’ll find a whole array of ligaments functioning to stabilize and limit the movement of the bones within (showing xrays of different joints on a real person). Take the knee for instance.
You have the Femur here and then the tibia and fibia. On top of that you have your kneecap or patella. Remember Ligaments connect bone to bone and in the knee lets show these 4 major stabilizing ligaments. This is your ACL. Here is your PCL. Here is the MCL and here is the LCL.
Now if you’ve ever tweaked your knee ligaments, or any other ligament in your body - say spraining an ankle, you’ll probably want to know what you can do to strengthen and heal them.
Unfortunately for us, torn ligaments are not like broken bones. They won’t just reattach themselves.
Here are the basics:
Ligaments are composed mostly of long, stringy collagen fibers that create bands of tough, fibrous connective tissue. Ligaments themselves are slightly elastic, so they can be stretched and gradually lengthen, increasing flexibility. But if stretched beyond a certain point, ligaments can become overstretched and compromise the integrity of the joint they are supposed to be stabilizing — so stretch with caution.
As a little tidbit, the term double-jointed actually refers to people who have highly elastic ligaments, which allow them to move their joints into more extreme positions than most people.
If you did injure a ligament - go to the doctor. Trained orthopedic docs are usually the best at diagnosing these injuries. Work with them and the physical therapy staff to find a rehab routine that suits your needs. It’ll help you get back on top of things quickly.

Your doctor has told you that you have a torn anterior cruciate ligament in your knee and has recommended arthroscopic surgery in order to repair it. But what does that actually mean?
The knee is one of the most complex and one of the most important joints in your body.
It is made up of bone, ligament and cartilage. Damage to any individual part can dramatically restrict the normal movement of the leg and can even interfere with the ability to walk.
Let's take a look at the way the knee joint is put together. The femur, or thigh bone, meets the fibula and tibia to create a flexible joint called the knee. Helping to stabilize the knee are the ligaments.
Patient Education
The ligaments in the knee are strong, flexible cords of tissue that hold the bones together. They maintain stability and allow the normal range of motion when you walk or run. The anterior cruciate ligament - or ACL -- guides the tibia, or shin bone. It helps keep your feet below your knees and your legs from buckling as you walk.
Twisting or bending the knee during sports or other strenuous activity can damage the ligament.
During an injury, patients often report feeling or even hearing a sudden "pop" in their knee at the exact moment when the ligament tears.
Other symptoms include swelling, restricted movement, pain and even the inability to stand on the affected leg.

Now it's time to talk about the actual procedure your doctor has recommended for you.
On the day of your operation, you will be asked to put on a surgical gown.
You may receive a sedative by mouth ...
... and an intravenous line may be put in.
You will then be transferred to an operating table.
In the operating room, a nurse will prepare you for surgery by clipping or shaving your leg. Patient Education
The surgeon will then apply antiseptic solution to the skin around the knee ...
... and place a sterile drape around the operative site.
The anesthesiologist will begin to numb the lower body by injecting a drug into the small of your back.
To perform arthroscopic surgery your doctor will make a few small, button-hole sized incisions in the area around the knee. An arthroscope is a very small video camera that your doctor uses to see the inside of your knee and to guide the surgery.
Before your doctor can insert the arthroscope, the surgical team must inject a clear fluid into the joint. This fluid will inflate the interior space, and will help your doctor by providing an unobstructed view and enough room in which to work.
The actual surgical instruments will be inserted through one or more other openings small openings. Your Procedure
After verifying that anterior cruciate ligament -- or ACL -- has been severed, your doctor will begin the procedure by removing a piece of tissue from the front of the knee. This tissue, or graft, has bone on both ends and a section of tendon stretched between.
Next, the team drills a hole in the end of the thighbone.
And another in the top of the shin. These holes becomes the sockets for the bony ends of the tendon graft taken at the beginning of the procedure.
The ligament graft is then inserted into place.
When the procedure is complete, the team withdraws the instruments ...
... and the surgical fluid drains safely from the knee.
Following surgery, sterile dressings are applied. To aid in healing, your knee may be stabilized with a brace.

At rest, slow twitch contractions angulate bladder (B), urethra (U), vagina (V) and rectum (R) around the insertion of the pubourethral ligament (PUL) at midurethra. 10ml radioopaque material has been injected into the levator plate (LP) vagina and rectum. During micturition (right figure), the urethra has moved backwards from the vertical co-ordinate, suggesting relaxation of the forward vector . Vagina and rectum appear to have been stretch backwards by a backward vector (black arrow). The anterior part of LP has been angulated downwards apparently by the downward vector (white arrow) acting against the cervix (CX)/ uterosacral ligament (USL) complex. The backward/downward vectors (thin diagonal arrows) create a diagonal vector force which seems to be pulling open the posterior urethral wall. S=sacrum.

Frequencies for Ligament Self healing. Binaural beats may influence functions of the brain in ways besides those related to hearing. This phenomenon is called frequency following response. The concept is that if one receives a stimulus with a frequency in the range of brain waves, the predominant brain wave frequency is said to be likely to move towards the frequency of the stimulus (a process called entrainment).
In addition, binaural beats have been credibly documented to relate to both spatial perception & stereo auditory recognition, and, according to the frequency following response, activation of various sites in the brain.
The stimulus does not have to be aural; it can also be visual or a combination of aural and visual (one such example would be Dreamachine).
Perceived human hearing is limited to the range of frequencies from 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz, but the frequencies of human brain waves are below about 40 Hz. To account for this lack of perception, binaural beat frequencies are used. Beat frequencies of 40 Hz have been produced in the brain with binaural sound and measured experimentally.
When the perceived beat frequency corresponds to the delta, theta, alpha, beta, or gamma range of brainwave frequencies, the brainwaves entrain to or move towards the beat frequency.
For example, if a 315 Hz sine wave is played into the right ear and a 325 Hz one into the left ear, the brain is entrained towards the beat frequency 10 Hz, in the alpha range. Since alpha range is associated with relaxation, this has a relaxing effect or if in the beta range, more alertness. An experiment with binaural sound stimulation using beat frequencies in the Beta range on some participants and Delta/Theta range in other participants, found better vigilance performance and mood in those on the awake alert state of Beta range stimulation.
Binaural beat stimulation has been used fairly extensively to induce a variety of states of consciousness, and there has been some work done in regards to the effects of these stimuli on relaxation, focus, attention, and states of consciousness.
Studies have shown that with repeated training to distinguish close frequency sounds that a plastic reorganization of the brain occurs for the trained frequencies and is capable of asymmetric hemispheric balancing.
The thalamus (from Greek θάλαμος, "inner chamber") is a midline symmetrical structure within the brains of vertebrates including humans, situated between the cerebral cortex and midbrain. Its function includes relaying sensory and motor signals to the cerebral cortex, along with the regulation of consciousness, sleep, and alertness. The thalamus surrounds the third ventricle. Find a comfortable place free of distractions. It's important not to listen to binaural beats when you need to do something that requires your full attention like driving. Avoid any tasks that are mentally demanding because the meditative state is not conducive to quick, action-oriented critical thinking.
Listen to binaural beats when you want to relax, clear your mind, get your creative juices flowing, engage your intuition to help solve problems and for personal development work such as repeating affirmations and doing visualization.
Be sure to give yourself enough listening time! The brain requires about 7 minutes to entrain, or fall in sync, with the audio stimulus. Give yourself at least 15-30 minutes of listening time to experience the benefits.
You must use stereo headphones for binaural beats to work. Why? Because the 'beats' themselves are created in your brain The word binaural means "having or relating to two ears." It works like this: each ear receives a slightly different frequency at the same time, and the brain perceives the tone that is the difference of the two. If 400Hz pulses into one ear and 410 into the other, the brain will process the two sounds into a 10 Hz frequency, which happens to be the same frequency produced by the brain during meditation.
All of these frequencies, and the effects they have on the brain have been studied by scientists over the past 40 years, mainly accredited to Robert Monroe of The Monroe Institute. From the extensive research done and on the strength of Monroes' findings, he concluded that inducing brainwave frequencies through the use of binaural beats causes a wide range of effects. But Monroe is definitely not alone in his findings. There are lots of other scientists that have also noted that these lower brainwave frequencies are accompanied by deep tranquility, flashes of creative insight, euphoria, intensely focused attention, enhanced learning abilities, spiritual awareness, and so much more.
