How to Bitstream DTS or Dolby audio - Tutorial

If you watch movies or videos with your PC connected to your home theater receiver you might want to follow my tutorial. Before starting, on a Windows computer go to Playback devices - configure menu for your connected receiver - select the speaker audio channels you have setup. Q: What's bitstreaming? A: This is passing perfect data from your computer to your receiver. You paid big money for your receiver so why let windows/software stuff around with the original audio. Q: What are the benefits? A: If your software renders audio, your OS or software will interpret the data and as a result you're not listening to the original data found on Blu-ray discs or DVDs etc. Passing data as DTS or Dolby will ensure data will be correctly decoded in the receiver where it belongs. Sound will be clearer, low-frequency effects (LFE) will be less muddier and multi-channel sounds will feel more spacious. Q: Do I need a receiver with HDMI v1.3? A: If you intend to stick with standard DTS or Dolby, no, you can even use Optical for 5.1 channel. But if you want full Blu-ray quality DTS-HD Master or Dolby TrueHD in 7.1 you need HDMI v1.3. Remember that not all videos will have a DTS or Dolby stream, typical audio you find in web content like .mp4 will always be rendered as LPCM. If you want my opinion, once you pump DTS-HD Master or Dolby TrueHD into your receiver, you will never want media any other way. I'm running a 9.2 system and it sounds excellent on any Blu-ray disc.
